Damage Types

Damage assessment is the disciplined identification and evaluation of physical, chemical, biological and human-caused changes that reduce a collectible's integrity, original surface, shape, legibility, completeness, stability, function, display quality or evidential value.

The useful question is not simply how imperfect the object looks. It is what happened, which material or layer is affected, whether original substance or information has been lost, whether the condition is stable, and what claim about grade, originality, completeness or safe use the damage now prevents.

Collector scenario

Two objects can look equally imperfect and carry very different risk

One boxed item has broad but shallow rubbing across a plain rear panel. Another has a short split at a lid corner that flexes whenever the box is opened. A listing might call both "minor damage". The first is mainly an appearance issue. The second is a small structural failure that may propagate and may control the grade.

Experienced assessment therefore weighs consequence rather than defect count or size alone. A barely visible crease through card fibres can matter more than obvious edge wear; a tiny active corrosion point can demand more urgent action than a large stable stain.

Orientation

Damage is not a synonym for wear, ageing or manufacture

These categories can overlap visually, but they describe different physical histories and should not be merged for convenience.

Usually gradual, repeated and consistent with handling, circulation, play, shelving or contact at exposed points.

Event or failure

Damage

Usually more discrete, disruptive or abnormal: a tear, crack, stain, crush, puncture, break, burn or corrosive reaction.

Production origin

Manufacturing variation

A feature created during manufacture, such as a roller line, factory wrinkle, rough cut, casting void or seal wrinkle. It may resemble later damage, but its origin changes the judgement.

Change over time

Ageing and deterioration

Material change associated with age or environment. Some ageing is expected and stable; some is progressive and should be treated as active damage risk.

Why the distinction matters

A uniformly worn book may remain structurally sound and wholly original. A cleaner-looking example with a reinforced tear may have altered material, concealed loss, uncertain treatment history and a restoration designation. Damage is often weighted more heavily than ordinary wear because it interrupts the object rather than merely recording normal use.

Recognition

The principal families of damage

A single incident may create several damage types. Record each physical effect rather than reducing the whole event to a phrase such as 'drop damage' or 'water damage'.

Mechanical and structural damage

Damage caused by force, pressure, impact or failure of a joint or support. It may be highly visible, or almost hidden until the object is moved.

  • Scratches, gouges, dents and impact marks
  • Tears, cuts, punctures, cracks and fractures
  • Breakage, separation, crushing and seam failure

Folding and deformation

Changes to intended shape. A bend may be broad and partly reversible; a crease records compressed or fractured structure; a fold is usually more pronounced.

  • Bends, creases, folds and corner turns
  • Warping, bowing, cupping, shrinkage and sagging
  • Misalignment caused by heat, pressure or joint movement

Surface and finish damage

Disturbance to paint, ink, gloss, plating, glaze, lacquer, emulsion, foil or another surface layer. Surface damage can be cosmetic, but it can also expose vulnerable material below.

  • Scuffing, abrasion, gloss loss and rubbing
  • Paint loss, flaking, lifting, peeling and crazing
  • Delamination and exposed substrate

Material loss

Original substance is absent rather than merely displaced. Loss is often disproportionately important because it cannot be reversed by flattening, realignment or ordinary stabilisation.

  • Chips, holes, missing corners and torn-away sections
  • Missing pages, labels, flaps, limbs or fragments
  • Erosion, powdering and corrosion-related loss

Moisture and environmental damage

Damage caused by water, humidity, pollutants or unsuitable storage conditions. It often creates several secondary defects at once and may continue after the object looks dry.

  • Tide lines, cockling, swelling and adhesion
  • Corrosion, pitting, acid migration and pollutant deposits
  • Ink movement, colour transfer, warping and hidden damp history

Biological damage

Damage caused by mould, insects, rodents or microorganisms. The first task is not grading precision but determining whether the object is safe to handle and whether the activity is current.

  • Mould, mildew, foxing and musty odour
  • Holes, grazing, channels, frass and shed skins
  • Gnawing, contamination and weakened organic material

Heat, fire and light damage

Irreversible change caused by temperature or radiation. A collectible may retain its shape while pigments, adhesives, polymers or paper have become permanently weakened.

  • Warping, shrinkage, seal distortion and adhesive failure
  • Scorching, charring, soot, smoke and extinguishing-water damage
  • Fading, shadow lines, embrittlement and colour change

Contamination and foreign substances

Material that is not original to the object, including residues that may stain, abrade, attract moisture or react chemically with the surface.

  • Dust, grease, fingerprints and smoke deposits
  • Tape, glue, labels, wax, polish and cleaning residue
  • Sticky plasticiser, unknown powders and persistent odour

Repair, cleaning and alteration damage

Intervention intended to improve or stabilise an object can remove original material, disguise defects or create a second condition problem. The underlying damage remains part of the record.

  • Abrasive cleaning, polishing, erasure and chemical treatment
  • Glue, tape, filler, colour touch, repainting and re-glossing
  • Trimming, substitution, resealing and concealed repair

Judgement

Defect name does not determine severity

A scratch may be a faint hairline, a deep gouge through a signature, or a network of abrasive cleaning marks. Grade consequence emerges from several interacting axes.

Extent

How much is affected: dimensions, percentage, number of pages, components or separate damaged zones.

Intensity

How severe the damage is within the affected area: superficial or deep, faint or opaque, partial or complete.

Location

Whether it affects a focal design, title, signature, date, serial number, seal, hinge, fastener, edge or load-bearing point.

Structural consequence

Whether the defect weakens support, threatens separation, prevents safe handling or interrupts function.

Information loss

Whether text, artwork, identity, provenance evidence, authentication features or unique historic marks have been obscured or removed.

Visibility

Whether it is immediately obvious, visible only under raking light, hidden on the reverse, enclosed, internal or apparent only in movement.

Originality impact

Whether original material, surface, dimensions or components have been removed, substituted, disguised or altered.

Stability

Whether the defect is closed and unchanged or actively spreading, flaking, corroding, migrating, sticking, crumbling or attracting pests.

Grade-limiting damage and cumulative damage

A grade-limiting defect establishes an upper boundary: one full crease on an otherwise sharp card, a detached cover on a clean comic, a deep scratch through a coin's central design, a missing manual in an excellent boxed game, or a broken accessory on a near-mint figure. The final grade is not always an average of all attributes.

Conversely, several individually minor defects may accumulate into a lower overall condition state. Judge their combined density, interaction and effect on original character, but avoid blind double counting when one impact has produced a dent, paint loss and a crack in the same damaged zone.

Risk

Stable history and active threat require different responses

A grade records present condition; it does not guarantee future stability. Active damage may deserve greater practical concern than a larger but closed historic defect.

Stable damage

Occurred but not progressing

Examples include an old closed tear, historic chip, dry stain, faded image, missing corner or compact unchanged corrosion layer.

Stable does not mean insignificant. It means the present priority is accurate grading, support and monitoring rather than emergency intervention.

Active damage

Continuing or threatening further loss

Examples include spreading corrosion, live mould, flaking paint, sticky plastic, expanding cracks, migrating adhesive, pest activity, damp material and powdering foam.

Here preservation risk takes priority over precise market-grade language. Handling, enclosure or delayed action may worsen the object or contaminate nearby material.

Working scale

A practical damage hierarchy

This is a condition-management aid, not a universal grading scale. Category standards, rarity, material and market practice may change the final grade outcome.

Level 1

Minor cosmetic disturbance

Faint rub, tiny edge nick, isolated superficial scratch or subtle gloss variation. Usually local and stable.

Level 2

Noticeable damage

Visible scratch, small stain, short tear, mild warp, minor corner crush or small paint chip. Clearly grade-relevant but limited.

Level 3

Significant damage

Full crease, deep gouge, cracked packaging, detached component, broad paint loss, major water stain or moderate corrosion. Often grade-limiting.

Level 4

Severe damage

Missing material, major fracture, extensive mould, heavy corrosion, substantial repair, severe distortion or loss of function.

Level 5

Critical or unstable condition

Active mould outbreak, crumbling material, spreading corrosion, imminent separation, leaking battery or an object unsafe to handle.

Category context

The same damage language changes meaning across materials

A defect should be judged against the object's construction, expected use and field-specific grading conventions. No damage type carries a universal fixed deduction.

Cards, comics and paper

Creases, dents, tears, staple stress, brittleness, foxing, water marks, trimming, colour touch, tape, writing and missing paper. Directional light is often essential because structural defects may be nearly invisible face-on.

Coins and medals

Scratches, rim damage, holes, corrosion, pitting, cleaning hairlines, polishing, tooling, smoothing, mounting marks and residues. A service may separate remaining detail from a disqualifying surface problem.

Figures, toys and models

Paint rub, chips, stress marks, cracks, broken accessories, loose joints, bent parts, yellowed plastic, glue residue and battery corrosion. Packaging and the enclosed object may need separate condition statements.

Video games and boxed media

Box crushing, flap tears, seal damage, label loss, case cracks, disc scratches, manual creases, fading, water damage and component mismatch. Completeness and matching components are separate from cosmetic grade.

Records and audio media

Groove scratches, wear, warp, edge chips, delamination, mould, sleeve splits, ring wear, label damage and heat deformation. Visual condition and playback performance should not be collapsed into one statement.

Ceramics, glass and photographs

Chips, cracks, fractures, glaze or emulsion loss, crazing, staining, silver mirroring, adhesion, curling and old repairs. Layered or brittle materials can make apparently small defects structurally important.

Packaging and function may need separate condition axes

For sealed toys, boxed games and modern collectibles, packaging may dominate value even where the enclosed item is pristine. Record whether packaging is original, sealed, resealed, structurally sound and necessary for completeness.

For watches, cameras, electronic games, records, cartridges, mechanical toys and similar objects, cosmetic condition and operational status are distinct facts. Record the testing method and limitations, and do not undertake risky or destructive testing merely to complete a grade.

Method

A repeatable damage-assessment sequence

The purpose of a fixed sequence is not bureaucracy. It reduces missed defects, separates evidence from inference and makes later comparison possible.

Establish the expected object

Identify the variant, materials, components, manufacture, intended shape, expected finish and original dimensions. Without a baseline, production features can be mistaken for damage.

Observe before handling

Look for loose fragments, flaking paint, mould, corrosion, unstable joints, leaking batteries, sharp broken edges or anything that makes ordinary handling unsafe.

Check completeness separately

Account for pages, inserts, accessories, panels, labels, fasteners, seals and packaging elements. A missing part and a broken part are not the same condition fact.

Inspect in a fixed sequence

Use the same route each time: front, reverse, top, bottom, sides, edges, corners, interior, components and function where testing is safe. Consistency reduces omission.

Change the light, not the object

Use diffuse light for colour, raking light for dents and creases, transmitted light for thinning and repairs, and magnification for fine scratches or fibres. Do not flex or press an object merely to reveal a defect.

Describe each significant defect

Record type, material or layer, exact location, dimensions or spread, depth, activity, likely cause, confidence and grading significance.

Separate observation from cause

Write what is visible first. Use 'consistent with', 'possible' or 'cause undetermined' where manufacture, handling, cleaning or storage history cannot be proved.

Identify the grade-limiting issue

Decide which feature places the strongest ceiling on grade. The final result is not necessarily an average of all surfaces and components.

Judge the combined condition

Consider structural integrity, visual character, originality, completeness, stability, displayability and function without mechanically double-counting several effects from one incident.

Document before intervention

Record condition and photographs before cleaning, flattening, repair, opening or treatment. An intervention can remove both evidence and original material.

Documentation

Describe damage so another collector can reconstruct the judgement

A grade number compresses information. A condition record preserves the evidence behind it and allows change to be detected over time.

Strong condition note

Front cover, lower-right corner: triangular crease approximately 18 x 22 mm, breaking printed colour along 14 mm of the fold. Corner remains attached. No material loss. Crease appears stable but is visually prominent from the front.

Preservation warning note

Metal base, reverse: irregular green corrosion deposit approximately 9 x 6 mm around the fastener. Powdery particles present beneath the object, suggesting active corrosion. Cause unconfirmed. Isolate pending specialist assessment.

Use observable, qualified language

Prefer

  • 12 mm tear at upper edge
  • Brown tide line affecting lower quarter
  • Three parallel scratches visible under raking light
  • Paint loss exposing grey substrate
  • Cover detached at lower staple

Avoid without evidence

  • Carelessly stored
  • Definitely cleaned
  • Easy repair
  • Harmless mould
  • Only cosmetic

Useful uncertainty terms include probable, possible, consistent with, cause undetermined, appears stable, suspected active and inspection limited by enclosure.

Damage photography checklist

  • Full front and reverse photographs
  • All sides, edges, corners, seams and relevant interior views
  • Overall image showing the defect in context
  • Close-up under normal and angled light where useful
  • Scale reference for measurable defects
  • Separate layout of components and packaging
  • Neutral written description with exact location and dimensions
  • Statement of stability, activity and inspection limitations
  • Cause and confidence recorded separately from observation
  • Before-and-after evidence if any treatment later occurs

Escalation

When to stop ordinary inspection and refer

Specialist referral is warranted when continued handling, opening, cleaning or testing may create further loss, expose a hazard or destroy evidence of prior treatment.

  • Active or suspected mould, pest activity or contamination that may spread
  • Unknown powder, residue, odour or hazardous historic material
  • Powdery or expanding corrosion, leaking batteries or chemical exudation
  • Flaking paint, friable pigment, crumbling foam or active delamination
  • Structural cracking in glass, ceramics, resin or load-bearing components
  • Valuable paper with ageing pressure-sensitive tape or adhered surfaces
  • Suspected colour touch, trimming, added material or concealed restoration
  • A sealed, framed or fragile object that cannot be opened without risk
  • Any inspection step likely to cause component loss or further separation

Collector discipline

Common mistakes that weaken a damage assessment

Calling every imperfection wear

Tears, cracks, stains, punctures and crushed structures are incidents or failures, not merely gradual wear.

Calling every age-related change damage

Expected paper tone, stable patina or a normal manufacturing texture may be acceptable for the category. Context matters.

Grading only the display face

Reverse surfaces, edges, spines, undersides, seams, fasteners and interiors often contain the grade-limiting evidence.

Using size as the severity test

A tiny puncture through a signature can matter more than a broad faint stain in an unprinted area.

Ignoring whether damage is active

A stable historic chip and a spreading crack are not equivalent risks, even when their current visual effect is similar.

Cleaning before assessment

Cleaning can erase evidence, disturb surfaces, mobilise dyes, enlarge stains and change originality before the condition has been recorded.

Treating repair as erasure

A repaired tear remains a tear plus an intervention. The improved appearance does not remove the underlying condition event.

Averaging defects mechanically

One severe flaw may establish a grade ceiling. Many small defects may also accumulate, but several effects from one damaged zone should not be penalised blindly three times.

  1. What exactly is damaged?
  2. Which material, coating, layer or component is affected?
  3. Is original material displaced, weakened or missing?
  4. Is the defect cosmetic, structural, functional or more than one?
  5. Is it stable, uncertain or actively progressing?
  6. Does it obscure important design, information or evidence?
  7. Could it be a manufacturing feature rather than later damage?
  8. Is there evidence of repair, cleaning, replacement or concealment?
  9. Does it compromise originality, authenticity or completeness?
  10. Would further inspection create additional damage?
  11. Is it the grade-limiting feature?
  12. How confident is the assessment, and what remains unseen?

Key principles

What serious collectors retain

  • Damage must be described, not merely named. Type, material, location, extent, severity, stability and effect turn a label into evidence.
  • Material loss matters disproportionately. Original substance or information that is absent cannot be treated like a temporary bend or displaced component.
  • Structural damage may be subtle. A faint crease or hidden joint failure may matter more than broad superficial wear.
  • Originality and condition are intertwined. Cleaning, repair and retouching may improve immediate appearance while reducing originality and grade acceptability.
  • Active damage changes the priority. When loss is continuing, preservation and safe handling come before fine grade distinctions.
  • No defect has a universal deduction. Category, material, location, intensity, rarity and grading system all shape consequence.
  • Uncertainty should remain visible. A qualified assessment is stronger than false precision where cause, depth, activity or hidden extent cannot be established.

Final perspective

Damage assessment is not a hunt for flaws. It is an attempt to reconstruct an object's physical history: how it was made, used, stored, altered, repaired and whether it is now stable.

The strongest grader distinguishes wear from accident, manufacture from deterioration, surface disturbance from structural failure, stable history from active threat, and honest damage from concealed intervention. That is what turns defect spotting into serious condition assessment.
