Hidden and Internal Condition
Hidden condition concerns defects, deterioration, alteration or instability that ordinary external inspection cannot confirm. Internal condition concerns the state of concealed surfaces, enclosed cavities, layered materials, internal components, bindings, fastenings, mechanisms, contents and material beneath coatings, mounts or repairs.
The concepts overlap but are not identical. Fading beneath a frame, adhesive residue under a label or trimming concealed by a holder may be hidden without being physically inside the object. A battery compartment, meanwhile, is internal but may be safely accessible. The grading discipline is therefore not simply to look harder. It is to distinguish what was observed, what is indicated, what remains unknown and what would require specialist examination.
An attractive exterior can coexist with severe internal damage. An object with substantial cosmetic wear can also remain internally complete, original and structurally sound. Hidden condition matters because appearance, structure, completeness, originality, function, stability and inspection confidence are separate questions that should not be collapsed into one unsupported grade.
Collector scenario
The immaculate boxed electronic toy
A boxed electronic toy presents exceptionally well. The colours are bright, the window is clear, the factory ties appear untouched and the seller calls it “mint and working.” The toy has not been removed from the tray, the battery compartment cannot be seen, and no test video is available.
The visible packaging may deserve a strong grade. The claim that the toy is working does not. A period battery could have leaked, internal wiring could have embrittled, a gear could be cracked or an accessory could be missing behind the tray. None of those possibilities should be asserted as fact, but neither should they be silently converted into confidence.

The discipline of grading what cannot be fully seen
Grade the evidence, not the hope
A strong exterior does not prove a strong interior. Where important areas were not examined, the correct result is a qualified conclusion rather than a favourable assumption.
State the inspection boundary
Every condition statement should make clear which areas were examined, which were inaccessible, whether testing occurred and whether the object was opened or dismantled.
Visibility is not materiality
A concealed fracture at a load-bearing joint may matter more than a large superficial scratch. A microscopic internal anomaly with no consequence may matter very little.
Uncertainty is a finding
Unknown internal condition is not a grading failure. It is an honest description of the available evidence and should be recorded alongside the visible condition.
Evidence model
Four levels of condition knowledge
The same object may contain evidence at several levels. A visible corroded battery contact is observed; staining around the compartment may indicate wider leakage; the circuit board may remain unknown; and a conservator’s endoscopic examination may later confirm internal damage. Keeping those levels separate prevents a clue from becoming a claim.

Main families of hidden and internal defects
Structural defects
Hidden breaks and weakened joins can reduce safe handling even when display appearance remains convincing.

Collector consequence

A presentable container or exterior can conceal missing, substituted or non-original contents.

Collector consequence
Completeness should be recorded as a separate axis. ‘Looks complete’ is not equivalent to an inventory checked against a reliable reference.
Contamination and staining
Residues and pollutants may be trapped between layers, inside holders or within enclosed materials.

Repairs are often hardest to detect when they sit behind a cover, beneath paint, inside a seam or under a mount.

Working behaviour may depend on internal parts that visual inspection cannot assess reliably.

Hidden alteration and fabrication
Internal evidence may reveal an attempt to improve appearance, conceal repair or create an apparently rarer object.

Collector consequence
The object may remain authentic in a broad sense while no longer qualifying as original, unaltered or eligible for an ordinary numerical grade.
Grading identifies and weighs the condition; it does not automatically authorise treatment
Active corrosion, mould, leaking batteries, pest activity or degrading foam may require urgent preservation action. Decisions about cleaning, stabilisation, conservation or restoration belong primarily to preservation and restoration practice. Record the condition first, isolate immediate hazards where safe, and avoid turning diagnosis into an improvised intervention.
Diagnostic judgement
Warning signs: evidence, meaning and collector risk
Warning signs are strongest when several independent observations converge. A stain, rattle or smell may justify caution, further evidence or specialist referral. It does not justify a specific diagnosis unless the cause has been confirmed.
Visual irregularity
Evidence
Bulges, local depressions, uneven seams, displaced staples, mismatched screw heads, lifted coatings, fresh material beside aged material, shadow lines around labels or staining emerging from joints.
Possible meaning
These may indicate pressure, repair, substitution, delamination, leakage or concealed damage.
Collector risk
No single irregularity proves a hidden defect. Compare both sides, known examples and manufacturing variation before drawing a conclusion.
Tactile change
Evidence
Unexpected flexibility, soft spots, crunching, layer movement, an unusually light or heavy feel, resistance in a moving part or movement within a joint.
Possible meaning
The object may contain weakened material, detached layers, missing contents or internal breakage.
Collector risk
Do not flex, press, squeeze or repeatedly articulate fragile objects simply to search for evidence.
Sound or movement
Evidence
Rattling, scraping, loose fragments, excessive vibration or contents shifting inside packaging.
Possible meaning
Something is moving, but the cause may be damage, loose hardware, detached packaging or a harmless accessory.
Collector risk
Sound proves movement, not diagnosis. Avoid deliberate shaking where it may worsen damage.
Odour or chemical sign
Evidence
Mustiness, damp, smoke, decomposing plastic, acidic paper, rubber degradation, oil, adhesive, cleaning chemical or pest-related odour.
Possible meaning
The item may have experienced contamination, damp exposure, chemical breakdown or unsuitable storage.
Collector risk
Odour is subjective and some substances may be hazardous. Record cautiously and stop exposure where safety is uncertain.
Behaviour during safe use
Evidence
Flickering, intermittent power, unusual heat, stiffness, delayed motion, covers pulling away, page blocks separating or panels opening under light pressure.
Possible meaning
The object may contain active internal failure or weakening that is not yet obvious in static display.
Collector risk
Stop testing as soon as abnormal behaviour appears. Continued operation can turn a suspected defect into fresh damage.

Begin with the least invasive method that can answer the legitimate question. More access is not automatically better. Each technique should be chosen for the object, material, risk and consequence of uncertainty.

Stop ordinary grading when examination itself may become the main risk
Escalation is warranted when the object is rare or high-value, the suspected defect affects structural safety or authenticity, specialist imaging could answer the question non-destructively, hazardous contamination is possible, or access requires disassembly beyond routine opening.

- Do not insert a scope into a cavity where it may scratch, detach or contaminate material.
- Do not remove a mount, lining or backing without understanding how it is attached.
- Do not break an apparently original seal solely to convert uncertainty into a stronger grade.
- Do not perform destructive sampling for a routine collecting decision.
Inspection boundary
Make the scope of the grade reconstructable
An inspection boundary is the point beyond which the assessor did not or could not examine. It may be exterior only, visible pages only, accessible compartments only, tested without dismantling, contents inspected but mechanisms unopened, or the object assessed through encapsulation.
Strong condition wording
“The exterior, accessible compartments and visible internal components were examined under normal and raking light. The motor housing was not opened. Mechanical operation was not tested. Condition within the sealed housing remains unknown.”
This statement is more reliable than “excellent condition” because it defines both the evidence and the limit of the conclusion.
High-uncertainty states
Sealed and encapsulated collectibles
Sealed objects
Opening improves knowledge; remaining sealed preserves an important collecting state. Without opening, collectors can usually assess package condition, seal continuity, crushing, punctures, fading, window clarity, visible contents, movement, leakage, deformation and evidence of resealing.
Full completeness, concealed surfaces, internal mould, battery leakage, hidden accessories, substitution and function normally remain unverified. Record seal status, packaging condition, visible item condition and internal-condition confidence separately.
Encapsulation and slabs
A holder may prevent edge inspection, obscure surfaces beneath gaskets, introduce reflections and block assessment of texture, odour or post-encapsulation change. The certification label records an assessment at a particular time; it does not make continuing deterioration impossible.
Separate the third-party label, the item’s current visible condition, the holder’s condition and anything the holder prevents you from checking. Grader notes may improve transparency but do not remove the present inspection boundary.
Grading consequence
How hidden defects should influence grade
Materiality before visibility
Ask whether the issue affects appearance, completeness, structure, use, originality, stability, authenticity or market acceptability. A tiny concealed scuff may be negligible. A concealed fracture at the main support may be decisive.
Severity and activity
Consider depth, extent, location, activity, reversibility and likelihood of worsening. Active mould or corrosion may carry more weight than stable historic staining of similar visual size.
Grade ceilings
Missing pages, major internal repair, a broken structural component, incomplete contents, extensive mould or loss of an integral function may impose a practical maximum grade. The exact ceiling remains category- and system-dependent.
Exceptional-defect treatment
Where one major concealed issue sits beside an otherwise strong object, an apparent grade plus qualifier, details grade, defect note or separate cosmetic and structural assessment may communicate more truth than a single compromised number.

Record the intervention separately from the damage it addressed.
Stability
Is deterioration active or likely to progress?
Corrosion, mould, leaking batteries and degrading foam may require preservation action beyond grading.
Inspection confidence
How much of the object was actually examined?
Confidence describes evidence coverage, not quality. A pristine sealed object may still have low internal-condition confidence.

This is more useful than a single “8/10” because it shows which part of the object is strong, which problem is confirmed and where the inspection stops.

Electronic and mechanical collectibles

Inspect
Review documentation, power requirements and accessible compartments before any limited test. Record the power source, duration and functions checked.

‘Untested’ may be the responsible conclusion where powering on could cause irreversible damage.
Hidden condition can inform authentication, but grading should not quietly become an authentication verdict
Replacement fasteners, modern materials, substituted mechanisms, recreated pages and concealed assembly changes may affect authenticity or attribution. Record the physical evidence within the grading report, then refer the authenticity claim to the appropriate evidence-led authentication process rather than declaring an object fake from one internal anomaly.
Remote assessment
Photographs expose some condition and conceal other condition
Remote grading usually cannot establish odour, flexibility, movement, weight, page completeness, internal corrosion, precise function, subtle layer separation or repair beneath paint. A seller’s statement is evidence to evaluate, not direct observation by the buyer.

Documentation
Record enough evidence for the next collector
Hidden-condition documentation should allow another person to understand not only the conclusion, but also the examination that produced it. The record should distinguish facts, interpretations and conclusions that remain unproven.

- Object identity, variant and identifying marks
- Date, assessor and inspection conditions
- Areas examined directly and areas not examined
- Panels, compartments or removable components accessed
- Lighting, magnification, comparison references or other methods used
- Tests performed, power source, duration and functions omitted
- Observed findings, indicated concerns and unknown areas
- Confidence level and reason for that confidence
- Whole-object, internal-overview and detailed defect photographs
- Any movement, opening, disassembly or change made during inspection

Report language
Useful wording for common inspection limits
Exterior-only inspection
The object was examined externally under normal and raking light. No dismantling or internal inspection was undertaken. Condition within enclosed components remains unknown.
Sealed item
The outer packaging and visible contents were assessed without breaking the apparent factory seals. Internal completeness, concealed surfaces and functional condition were not verified.
Suspected internal defect
A loose component can be heard moving within the housing. The source and extent of the issue were not confirmed because the housing was not opened.
Limited functional test
The item powered on and the principal display and sound functions operated during a brief test. No extended reliability, internal electrical or safety assessment was performed.
Confirmed concealed repair
An internal adhesive reinforcement is present behind the right-hand attachment point. It is not visible during normal display but constitutes a structural repair and reduces originality.
Uncertain restoration status
No restoration was identified during ordinary visual inspection. Concealed intervention cannot be excluded without specialist examination.
Myth versus reality
Common conclusions that exceed the evidence
Myth
It looks mint, so the inside will be mint.
Reality
Exterior and internal preservation can diverge substantially because different materials, enclosures and stresses age differently.
Myth
Factory sealed means complete.
Reality
Sealed describes access and state. Manufacturing error, substitution, resealing, contamination and internal deterioration remain possible.
Myth
A working item has no internal problems.
Reality
