Completeness Checks

A completeness check determines whether a collectible retains the components, contents and associated elements required by the particular state in which it is being assessed. The governing question is not simply whether the object looks whole. It is: what should be present, what is actually present, and can each present component be shown to be correct for this release and plausibly associated with this example?

That makes completeness a structured grading judgement rather than a piece count. A collectible may be functional but incomplete as sold, complete in contents but missing packaging, complete with correct period parts but assembled from several examples, or apparently complete while important sealed contents remain unverified. The strongest conclusion is rarely the single word complete. It is a bounded statement that identifies the standard used, the evidence examined, the exceptions found and the confidence justified.

Collector scenario

The box looks full — but what exactly has been proved?

A collector buys a boxed vintage game described as complete. The board, rules, map, dice and counters are visible. Nothing looks obviously absent. A later edition-specific reference shows that this first printing also included an errata sheet, a catalogue, a cardboard spacer and a second small envelope of counters. Two dice in the box match the period but not the original issue colour.

The seller may not have intended to mislead. The problem is that the claim was made before the expected contents were defined. The set is playable. It is not retail-complete. Some material is missing, some is substituted, and the exact association of the surviving loose parts is uncertain.

Collector lesson: a completeness judgement begins with the release specification, not with the impression left by an open box.

Four questions that must not be collapsed into one grade

Condition, completeness and originality overlap in practice, but they answer different questions. Confidence tells the reader how secure those answers are.

Condition

What state are the surviving components in?

Condition records wear, damage, deterioration, repair and stability. A torn map can be present; a split box can still be the correct box.

Completeness

Are all components required by the stated assessment boundary present?

Completeness depends on the claim being made. Loose completeness, retail completeness and archival completeness require different contents.

Originality

Are the present components original and correct for this release?

A replacement can restore function or appearance without restoring original completeness. Correct type is not the same as original association.

Confidence

How securely can the other conclusions be supported?

Confidence reflects access, source quality, edition certainty, contradictions and whether important contents remain sealed, hidden or disputed.

A useful description might read: Complete in major contents; two counters are period replacements; box and instructions original; minor insert status unverified. That sentence carries more grading information than a high-level complete/incomplete checkbox.

Assessment boundary

Complete according to which claim?

There is no universal completeness standard. The phrase creates a checklist, and changing the phrase changes what must be present.

Functional completeness

Everything needed for normal operation or use is present. Replacement dice, a later power supply or a facsimile instruction sheet may satisfy function without satisfying collector completeness.

Display completeness

The object presents as expected, but hidden, paper, packaging or non-display elements may be missing or substituted.

Contents completeness

The main object, accessories and supplied contents are present, while packaging may sit outside the stated boundary.

Retail completeness

Everything supplied to the purchaser for the specified issue is accounted for, including relevant paperwork, packaging layers and issue-specific extras.

Unused retail completeness

The correct contents survive in the unused state being claimed: unpunched, unapplied, unassembled, unopened or unconsumed where those distinctions matter.

Archival completeness

Even routinely discarded wrappers, spacers, notices, envelopes, shipping elements or dealer materials survive where the collecting field recognises them.

A loose figure may be complete with its weapon and removable clothing. The same item described as a complete first-issue boxed example may also require the tray, restraints, backing card, leaflet, catalogue, stickers, protective bag and outer box. Defining the boundary before inspection prevents a disagreement about the word complete from becoming a disagreement about the object itself.

Reference standard

The hardest question is often what should have been there

Collectibles vary by printing, territory, retailer, factory run, promotion and production revision. A checklist from the wrong version can make a correct object appear incomplete — or hide incorrect parts inside an apparently complete set.

Normal variation before warning sign

  • A component was supplied only in one territory or retailer package.
  • A later printing integrated a separate insert into the rulebook.
  • Promotional or randomised material was never universal.
  • A cost-reduced production run legitimately omitted a packing layer.

Warning signs

  • Typography, colour or copyright lines belong to another printing.
  • A supposedly matched certificate bears a different serial number.
  • Wear patterns or packaging impressions conflict with the claimed association.
  • Extra parts appear to conceal a shortage or substitution.

Primary specification evidence

Strongest starting point

Evidence created by the manufacturer, publisher, distributor or contemporary retail chain can define what the product was intended to contain.

  • factory packing lists and original contents lists
  • manufacturer instructions and assembly diagrams
  • publisher collation statements
  • contemporary catalogues, advertisements and order sheets
  • production records, official photographs and archive examples
  • issue-specific inserts that explicitly list contents

Comparative collector evidence

Strong when repeated and independent

Where formal records are absent, several well-documented examples can establish a reliable pattern. One comparison object is not enough.

  • multiple independently sourced complete examples
  • original-owner or long-provenance examples
  • high-quality photographs showing all layers
  • specialist reference works, registries and census data
  • documented auction archives and recognised databases
  • credible unopened examples whose package integrity is understood

Indicative evidence

Useful but vulnerable

These sources can suggest a checklist, but should not silently become proof. They are especially risky where releases changed during production.

  • a single sales listing or auction description
  • seller or collector recollection
  • unsourced forum claims and copied checklists
  • photographs that do not show every layer
  • modern reproduction instructions
  • collector convention repeated without an evidence trail

What must be checked

Completeness has layers

A component is not limited to the obvious main piece. Advanced completeness claims may reach from the central object to consumables, printed matter and packing materials that were designed to be discarded.

Defining and primary components

The central material that establishes the identity of the object or set.

  • main figure, model, board or mechanism
  • principal book, volume, artwork or card group
  • core panels, modules or matched objects

Collector risk: Absence can make the object fundamentally incomplete or change what is actually being graded.

Functional components

Parts required for intended operation or use, even when they are visually secondary.

  • keys, cables, controllers and power supplies
  • winding handles, weights, pendulums and specialised tools
  • dice, spinners, movement trays, rules and tokens

Collector risk: A later substitute may restore operation while weakening originality and matched completeness.

Accessories and display elements

Loose components that shape appearance, configuration or collector desirability.

  • weapons, hats, capes and alternate hands
  • stands, bases, cases, dividers and trays
  • decals, badges, cards, brushes and measuring tools

Collector risk: Small, frequently lost accessories often carry a value effect far larger than their physical size.

Printed matter and evidence items

Paper components that explain, authenticate, document or complete the issued package.

  • instructions, maps, rulebooks and assembly diagrams
  • catalogues, warranty cards, certificates and registration forms
  • errata, posters, transfer sheets, score pads and envelopes

Collector risk: These are easy to overlook, yet may identify an issue, establish limitation or distinguish a complete package from a merely usable object.

Consumables and use-state material

Items intended to be used, applied, separated or exhausted during normal ownership.

  • paints, glue, powders, crayons and batteries
  • sticker sheets, transfers, blank forms and score sheets
  • sealed packets, refills, blades and sample materials

Collector risk: Presence alone does not establish unused completeness. Record whether the material is unused, partial, consumed, empty or replaced.

Packaging and packing layers

The retail and protective structure around the object, often made from several independently significant parts.

  • outer carton, lid, base, sleeve and header card
  • inner tray, foam, tissue, bags, wrappers and spacers
  • blister, sealing label, paper band and shipping carton

Collector risk: Boxed does not mean complete in box. The assessment must decide which layers belong to the claimed collecting state.

Correctness and association

Presence does not prove that a component belongs

A count only answers how many pieces were found. A grading-level check also tests whether each piece is correct and whether the parts can credibly be treated as a coherent example.

Type-complete

Every required kind and quantity of component is represented, but some pieces may be replacements, later matches or otherwise unverified.

Example: One map, two rulebooks, six dice and 100 counters are present, although two dice cannot be linked to the original set.

Specification-complete

All components are correct for the identified edition, territory, revision and package specification.

Example: The correct first-print rules, counter colours, map revision and issue-specific catalogue are present.

Example-complete

The components are credibly believed to be the actual material originally supplied together with this individual example.

Example: Original-owner history, matched identifiers, fitted wear and dated photographs support continuous association.

Evidence that may support association

  • matching serial, assembly or edition identifiers
  • production-range or batch compatibility
  • original-owner provenance and historic photographs
  • fitted wear, packaging impressions and aligned marks
  • compatible paper tone, fading, oxidation and storage traces

Why association evidence remains interpretive

  • different materials age at different rates
  • accessories may have been stored separately
  • shared moulds and interchangeable parts can create false matches
  • retailer replacements may be old but not original to the example
  • matching wear supports a relationship; it rarely proves one alone

Domain boundary

Where completeness ends and neighbouring domains begin

Completeness records whether required material is present and how securely it can be associated. Authentication asks whether the object and components are genuine. Provenanceevaluates ownership and custody evidence. Preservationgoverns safe access and handling. Restorationrecords repair, reconstruction and added material. Valuationdetermines the market effect of the final state.

A completeness page should identify those boundaries rather than trying to settle every adjacent question. It should, however, record enough evidence and uncertainty for those later judgements to remain possible.

Practical method

A defensible completeness-checking workflow

The sequence matters. Counting before identification, or handling before risk assessment, creates avoidable error and sometimes avoidable damage.

Resolve the object's identity

Record the manufacturer or publisher, title, model, edition, printing, territory, date range, variant, packaging form and known production revision. A completeness finding cannot be stronger than the identification beneath it.

Define what complete means here

State the assessment boundary before opening a box or counting pieces. Decide whether the claim concerns a loose object, functional outfit, contents set, complete retail package, unused issue or archival example.

Build an expected-contents specification

Separate essential components, accessories, printed matter, packaging, consumables, optional elements and disputed or territory-specific material.

  • Identify the source supporting each expectation.
  • Mark optional, randomised and uncertain contents explicitly.
  • Do not import components from a different printing or territory.

Plan the inspection before handling

Choose an inspection depth proportionate to fragility, value and purpose. Do not dismantle, unseal or disturb unstable material merely to obtain a stronger completeness claim.

  • Prepare a clean, contained working area.
  • Photograph layers before moving them.
  • Use trays or labelled zones for small components.
  • Stop where access would create material risk.

Lay out and reconcile the contents

Where safe, separate components by type, count them, inspect cavities, liners, envelopes and folded matter, and record shortages as well as excesses.

Test correctness, not just presence

Compare dimensions, material, colour, mould, printing, finish, markings, copyright lines, production method and regional form. Numerical completeness is not evidential completeness.

Test association

Ask whether the parts plausibly belong together. Serial relationships, batch codes, compatible ageing, fitted impressions, shared provenance and historic photographs may support association, but each has limits.

Record condition separately

A torn rulebook, snapped weapon or punched counter can still be present. Presence should never conceal damage, repair, partial survival or loss of use-state.

Document evidence and inspection limits

Photograph the full layout, disputed components, edition marks, serials, empty cavities, damaged parts, replacement indicators and inaccessible areas. Record what was not opened or could not be inspected.

Write a bounded conclusion

State the scope, reference basis, observed result, exceptions and confidence. A defensible statement is more valuable than an absolute label unsupported by evidence.

Recording language

Describe the component status, not just the verdict

Component-level vocabulary keeps fact, interpretation and uncertainty visible. It also allows a later owner to review the conclusion when better references appear.

Present and correct

The component is physically present and matches the expected specification with reasonable confidence.

Present but damaged

The component survives, but condition, stability or usability must be recorded separately.

Present but partial

Only part of the component survives, such as a broken stand, incomplete map or cover without its internal pages.

Present but consumed or applied

The original material remains in changed use-state: paint used, stickers applied, counters punched or forms completed.

Present but substituted

A non-original component fills the expected role. Identify period replacement, later manufacturer part, reproduction or unknown substitute where possible.

Missing

The expected component is absent and the inspection was sufficient to support that conclusion.

Not verified or inaccessible

The component may be present, but access, photographs or examination were insufficient. This is not the same as missing.

Not originally supplied, optional or extra

Record material outside the required specification so that later additions, unrelated paperwork or duplicated pieces do not distort the conclusion.

Judgement

Quantity matters, but significance controls the consequence

A set with 99 of 100 pieces is not meaningfully 99% complete if the missing piece is the unique board, lid, signed plate or principal figure.

Defining

Its absence changes the identity, category or essential form of the object.

Typical examples: Main volume, central mechanism, principal figure, title plate or defining module.

Essential

Required for normal function or accepted completeness within the collecting field.

Typical examples: Rulebook, lid, map, power supply, key component or unique board section.

Major

Important to display, use, desirability or issue identity, but not the central object itself.

Typical examples: Primary weapon, display base, certificate central to the edition or original bracelet.

Minor

Expected but less central. Minor does not necessarily mean cheap or easy to replace.

Typical examples: Common counter, spare peg, generic bag or duplicate token.

Ephemera and packing

Peripheral paper or packaging elements whose significance rises with boxed, unused or archival claims.

Typical examples: Catalogue, paper band, internal spacer, wrapper, notice or retailer insert.

Complete with defects can still be complete

Completeness concerns presence, not perfection. A component may be torn, cracked, written on, repaired, warped or heavily worn and still count as present. The threshold becomes difficult where only a fragment survives or modern reconstruction dominates the remaining original material.

Record the threshold openly: an original map repaired along its folds is present; a surviving map corner is a fragment. A repaired key may remain the original key; a newly made key built around a small original shaft is substantially reconstructed.

Changed state

Punched, assembled, consumed and repaired are not missing — but they are not unused

Many collectibles were designed to change through use. Completeness should preserve that distinction rather than disguising it.

Intended state changes

  • counters punched from frames
  • model parts removed from sprues
  • stickers and decals applied
  • kits assembled and envelopes opened
  • score sheets, forms or game materials used

Useful grading distinctions

  • complete and unused
  • complete, opened but unassembled
  • complete with components removed from frames
  • complete and assembled or applied
  • complete with partly consumed material

Reproduction and reconstructed components

Reproductions can improve display, safe operation or educational understanding. They do not restore original completeness. A repaired original component may remain present, while a component that is predominantly modern reconstruction should not be counted as though it were intact original material.

Reproductions should be disclosed, documented, distinguishable and removable where practical. The accurate phrase is display-complete with reproduction sword and facsimile instructions, not 100% complete.

Inspection limits

Sealed collectibles create a completeness paradox

An unopened package may preserve the state collectors value while preventing direct verification of the contents. The responsible response is qualified confidence, not forced certainty.

What sealing can support

  • an unopened or externally intact package state
  • continuity of presentation where seal integrity is credible
  • comparison by weight, imaging or visible contents where recognised
  • a presumption that has not been disproved

What sealing cannot automatically prove

  • factory shortages or incorrect factory contents
  • resealing, later shrink-wrap or package substitution
  • contents shifting beyond visible areas
  • internal deterioration concealed by the package
  • empty or weighted packages
  • partial visibility creating false confidence

Prefer: Externally sealed; contents presumed from package integrity and reference weight but not physically verified. Avoid: Contents confirmed complete where the inspection never reached the contents.

Edge cases

Factory errors, extra material and married examples

Original factory state and intended specification are not always the same. A good record preserves both facts.

Factory-original but specification-incomplete

A sealed or original-owner example may contain a shortage, duplicate, mixed revision or wrong factory component. It remains as supplied, but not complete to the intended specification.

Over-completeness and added material

Extra parts, later promotions, unrelated paperwork and retained replacements do not improve completeness automatically. Record additions so they cannot conceal substitution or become mistaken for original contents.

Married or assembled examples

Authentic, correct components gathered from different objects can produce a specification-complete set without original association. Apply a born-together standard only where the category can realistically support it.

Examples should demonstrate the reasoning, not replace it. Each scenario below separates observation from interpretation and finishes with usable grading language.

The complete-looking boxed game

Observable facts

Interpretation

The game is functionally complete and substantially retail-complete. It is not complete as originally packaged, and example-level originality is not fully established.

Defensible wording

The pristine figure with the wrong weapon

Observable facts

The loose figure is exceptionally clean and includes a weapon of the correct shape, but mould and colour details identify it as a modern reproduction.

Interpretation

Condition of the figure may be excellent. The outfit is display-complete but not complete with original accessories.

Defensible wording

Figure in excellent surviving condition; display-complete with disclosed reproduction weapon. Original accessory absent.

The sealed package

Observable facts

The factory-style seal appears intact, but contents cannot be counted without opening. Weight is consistent with documented examples, although factory shortages are known.

Interpretation

The seal supports an unopened-state claim, not direct verification of every internal component.

Defensible wording

Externally sealed and consistent in weight with reference examples. Internal completeness presumed but not physically verified.

The correct parts that may not be born together

Observable facts

All parts are authentic, period-correct and specification-compatible, but provenance shows the set was assembled from several incomplete examples.

Interpretation

The object can be specification-complete without being example-complete. Whether that distinction is commercially important depends on the category.

Defensible wording

Specification-complete using authentic period components assembled from multiple examples; original association not claimed.

Documentation

Turn the judgement into a component-level record

A single completeness field hides the evidence. For important objects, record the status and reasoning at component level so the finding can be audited, revised and transferred with the collection.

Common failure modes

Mistakes that create false completeness

Most errors arise not from bad counting, but from an undefined claim, a weak reference or an assumption presented as observation.

Using complete to mean no obvious gap

Why it fails: Visual wholeness does not account for issue-specific inserts, small accessories, hidden components or packaging layers.

Better practice: Compare the object with a documented expected-contents specification.

Using the wrong release checklist

Why it fails: Regional, printing, retailer and production-run differences can create false missing-part or wrong-part conclusions.

Better practice: Resolve the exact issue and record uncertainty where production changes are not documented.

Counting without identifying

Why it fails: The expected quantity may be present while some pieces come from another edition, reissue or product.

Better practice: Check markings, dimensions, materials, colour, print and production details component by component.

Treating all components as equally important

Why it fails: A unique missing map or lid can matter more than several common duplicate pieces.

Calling a replacement original

Final judgement

From sales language to a defensible grading conclusion

Completeness is a comparison between a precisely identified release, a supportable contents specification, the material observed, the correctness and association of that material, and the strength of the evidence.

The aim is not to make every collector prove museum-level association for every common object. The aim is proportional honesty. A routine loose collectible may need a short component checklist. A high-value boxed, serialised or archive-level example may require source comparison, component photography and a confidence statement.

The strongest useful conclusion is not merely Complete. It is: Complete to a defined standard, supported by identified evidence, with exceptions and uncertainty stated openly.
