Storage

Storage is one of the most important aspects of collectible preservation. Appropriate storage helps protect items from environmental damage, accidental handling, pests, pollutants and other factors that contribute to long-term deterioration. In many cases, good storage practices can significantly extend the lifespan of a collectible.

Different collectibles have different storage requirements. Materials such as paper, plastics, metals, textiles and wood each respond differently to temperature, humidity, light exposure and physical stress. Effective storage involves understanding these risks and selecting solutions that provide suitable protection while maintaining accessibility.

Storage is not simply about placing an item in a box or on a shelf. It involves making informed decisions about containers, materials, environments, organisation and monitoring. By creating appropriate storage systems, collectors can reduce risk, improve collection management and help ensure their collections remain available for future enjoyment, research and stewardship.
