Wear and Use Patterns

Wear is material change produced by contact, handling, movement, operation, display, storage or repeated use. In grading, the pattern matters as much as the severity. The central question is not merely whether an object is worn, but whether the location, direction and distribution of that wear make sense for the way the object would normally have been handled, stored or operated.

Wear on handles, knobs, flaps, controls, page edges and frequently examined sides can reveal how an object was lifted, opened or operated. Protected recesses should usually remain fresher than the points repeatedly touched.

Book joints, comic spines, box flaps, folded maps, straps, game boards and articulated figures should be assessed for both visible stress and structural consequence. A polished but sound hinge is not equivalent to cracking, tearing, adhesive repair or replacement.

Repeated-motion wear

Rotating joints, sliders, wheels, latches, accessory clips and winding mechanisms often create arcs, parallel tracks or matching contact points. Direction matters: random scratches are less persuasive evidence of normal operation than coherent movement paths.

Consequence

What has been lost or placed at risk?

Consider original surface, fine detail, identifying marks, protective coating, structural strength and future preservation risk.

Cumulative burden and dominant defect

Condition grades are not always mathematical averages. Twenty tiny abrasions may create a broad cumulative loss of freshness, while one severe crease, break or deep gouge may impose a hard grade ceiling despite otherwise strong presentation. Assess both the total burden of minor wear and the single defect that most limits the grade.

Wear in a focal image, title, face, signature, fragile hinge or identifying mark usually carries more weight than comparable wear on a concealed base. Wear that exposes unstable material, impairs function or destroys original texture also has consequences beyond appearance.

How wear presents across collectible types

The same physical mechanism can have very different grading significance across materials and collecting cultures. These are diagnostic starting points, not universal grade rules.

Expected wear does not become no wear

Some defects are common, difficult to avoid or tolerated because nearly all surviving examples share them. That context is useful when comparing examples, but it should not erase the physical alteration.

Describe the wear accurately, grade it under the relevant standard, compare it with typical survivors, then discuss rarity or market desirability separately. “Good for the issue” is context, not a substitute for an honest condition record.
