Ageing and Deterioration

Age is not a defect. Deterioration is. A collectible may be old yet exceptionally well preserved, or relatively modern and already materially unstable. Condition assessment must therefore judge what has changed since manufacture, how serious that change is, and what it means for appearance, integrity, function and future survival.

Grading cannot be entirely age-blind. The collector needs to understand what materials and construction were normal, how those materials typically change, what strong surviving examples look like, whether the observed change is stable or active, and whether an unusually fresh appearance may reflect cleaning, restoration or replacement. Context calibrates judgement; it does not excuse deterioration.

The central grading question

Not: “Does this look old?”

Ask: “What has changed, what is still original, and is the object continuing to change?”

Orientation

Ageing is a process; deterioration is an adverse outcome

Collectors often use ageing, wear, damage and deterioration interchangeably. The distinctions matter because they lead to different explanations, grade effects and preservation responses.

Ageing

Time-dependent change

Ageing is the cumulative physical and chemical change that occurs after manufacture. It is a process, not a grade. It may be slow, invisible, visually obvious, structurally serious, stable, accelerating, intrinsic to the object or promoted by its environment.

  • Gradual paper yellowing or varnish mellowing
  • Slow adhesive discolouration
  • Natural metal toning
  • Loss of flexibility in rubber
Wear

Change from normal use or handling

Wear records contact, movement or repeated use. It often follows coherent patterns at edges, folds, grips, hinges, high points and contact surfaces.

  • Loss of gloss at contact points
Damage

A discrete harmful event or action

Damage usually points to an incident, force or intervention rather than a slow process, although later deterioration may develop from it.

Deterioration

Harmful decline in valued properties

Deterioration is the broader adverse change that reduces appearance, strength, originality, function, information or future survivability. It may arise from ageing, wear, damage, storage, composition or several mechanisms together.

“Natural” does not mean harmless

Oxidation, hydrolysis, acidification, plasticiser loss and adhesive breakdown can arise from ordinary material chemistry and still cause irreversible loss. Paper can become acidic and brittle; rubber can harden or become sticky; PVC can deform; film can shrink and release acidic vapours; metal can corrode; dyes can fade; and adhesives can stain, crystallise or fail.

Modern synthetic materials are not automatically more stable than traditional ones. Some plastics, foams, coatings and composite interfaces can deteriorate rapidly or unpredictably despite limited use.

Condition dimensions

Do not compress every effect into one visual judgement

A single grade often hides the reason an object is weak. Assess the main condition axes separately before deciding whether one overall grade can communicate the result honestly.

Appearance

What the collector can see

Colour, gloss, clarity, finish, contrast, staining, fading and surface coherence. An object may look dramatically aged while remaining structurally sound, or look fresh while concealing serious internal weakness.

Structure

Whether the object still holds together

Strength, flexibility, adhesion, dimensional stability, attachment and completeness. Brittleness, cracking, delamination and joint failure can outweigh an otherwise attractive surface.

Material integrity

How much original substance survives

Original fibres, coating, pigment, plating, emulsion, finish and surface detail. Cleaning or treatment may improve appearance while removing original material or disguising earlier deterioration.

Function

Whether intended use remains possible and safe

Opening, folding, articulation, playback, operation and movement. A component may look complete yet no longer function, but testing fragile material can itself cause damage.

Information

Whether evidence remains legible

Images, text, signatures, labels, serial numbers, sound, data and distinguishing details. Deterioration that obscures identity or meaning may be more serious than similar damage in a blank area.

Stability

Whether the object is still changing

Future survivability is a separate condition question. A visually excellent object may be actively deteriorating; a visually poor object may be stable. Grade and stability should therefore be recorded separately.

Diagnosis

Intrinsic and extrinsic deterioration

Cause should be inferred cautiously. The safest grading record describes the observable condition first, then distinguishes likely mechanisms from known storage or provenance facts.

Intrinsic

The material system carries its own vulnerability

Deterioration may arise from original materials or manufacture: acidic groundwood paper, unstable acetate or nitrate, plasticised PVC, poorly cured rubber, fugitive dyes, incompatible pigments, unstable foam, corrosive metal combinations, weak adhesive or residual processing chemicals.

Extrinsic

Outside conditions promote or accelerate decline

Light, damp, heat, polluted air, unsuitable packaging, pests, repeated handling, pressure, poor support, floods, leaks and chemical cleaning may create or accelerate deterioration.

Most real examples are mixed. Acidic paper may be intrinsically vulnerable, while attic heat and humidity accelerate browning and embrittlement. A vinyl figure may contain mobile plasticiser, while heat and contact with incompatible packaging increase migration. A grader should not turn a plausible explanation into a fact.

“Brown discolouration and edge embrittlement.”

Unsupported assumption

“Stored in an attic for thirty years.”

Stability

The most important distinction: stable change or active deterioration

The same visual defect can require very different collector action depending on whether it is static, vulnerable or actively progressing.

Stable or apparently stable

Damage is present, but no immediate progression is evident

Stable does not mean harmless, original or high grade. It means that, under present conditions, no immediate change is apparent. A stable defect can still be severe and grade-limiting.

  • An old dry stain with no active mould or fresh distortion
  • Uniform paper toning without friability
  • Historical edge chipping that no longer sheds material
  • An old repair that remains mechanically secure
  • A dried corrosion product that is not spreading or powdering
Active deterioration

The object appears to be changing now

Active deterioration affects more than the cosmetic grade. It changes whether the object can be handled, enclosed, stored beside other objects, sold without special disclosure or assessed without specialist advice.

  • Fresh powder, flakes, fragments or debris
  • Tackiness, oiliness, weeping or strong chemical odour
  • Spreading corrosion, new crystalline deposits or battery leakage
  • Shrinking film, fresh cracking, bubbling or delamination
  • Active mould, migrating adhesive or repeated loss during handling

The boundary is material-specific and category-specific. Commonality, desirability and harmlessness are three different questions.

The comparative trap

A feature may be common without being harmless. Most surviving copies may have toned pages; many figures from a line may be tacky; nearly all boxes may be faded; most books may have rusty staples. Frequency affects market expectation and the availability of better examples, but it does not turn deterioration into original condition.

Distinguish “commonly encountered” from “not a condition defect.”

A practical patina test

  1. Is the change stable?
  2. Does it retain the original surface and detail?
  3. Is it broadly accepted in the collecting field?
  4. Is it visually coherent rather than disfiguring?
  5. Is it consistent with natural material history?
  6. Would removal destroy original material or historical evidence?

“Patina” is not a scientific exemption. Attractive toning and surface colour may be desirable, while dark corrosion, pitting, powdering or altered texture indicate loss of surface integrity.

Material recognition

Read the material before applying the grade

The same word can conceal very different mechanisms. Yellowing in paper, plastic, varnish and photographic material does not carry the same structural meaning or future risk.

Paper, books, comics, cards and ephemera

Common evidence

  • Yellowing, browning, foxing and acid migration
  • Fading, staining, tide lines and cockling
  • Edge chipping, delamination and adhesive discolouration
  • Rusting staples, mould, insect damage and ink offset

Collector judgement

Colour and strength must be assessed separately. A darkened page may remain flexible, while a pale page may be brittle. Examine edge flexibility, fold splitting, friability, page attachment and whether fragments release during careful opening.

  • Musty odour or suspected active mould
  • Fresh chipping during gentle handling
  • Rust migration from staples

Photographs and film

Common evidence

  • Silver mirroring, fading, yellowing and colour imbalance
  • Emulsion cracking, binder failure and support distortion
  • Blocking, mould, adhesive staining and fingerprints
  • Vinegar syndrome, nitrate deterioration and shrinkage

Collector judgement

Separate image quality from support condition. A photograph can retain a strong image while its support, emulsion or mount is failing. Sealed or enclosed film may also trap harmful off-gassing, so apparently protective packaging is not automatically safe.

Escalating signs

  • Vinegar-like or strong chemical odour
  • Shrinking, channeling or warped film
  • Tacky or lifting emulsion
  • Unknown nitrate or acetate material

Metals, coins, medals and hardware

Common evidence

  • Tarnish, toning, rust and verdigris
  • Pitting, powdering, crusts and plating loss
  • Galvanic corrosion and stress cracking
  • PVC residue and fingerprints etched into surfaces

Collector judgement

Colour change that leaves surface detail intact may be toning or patina. Corrosion more often alters texture through pits, roughness, raised products, crusts or local loss. Attempts to brighten the surface can add hairlines, stripped patina, chemical residue and loss of original finish.

  • Corrosion transferring from packaging or fasteners

Plastics and modern polymers

Common evidence

  • Yellowing, fading, blooming and colour transfer
  • Tackiness, plasticiser migration and oily exudation
  • Cracking, crazing, shrinkage and warping
  • Embrittlement, softening, odour and foam collapse

Collector judgement

Visually similar plastics may age very differently. Polymer identification may therefore control both interpretation and safe storage. A glossy or complete-looking object can still be chemically unstable or damaging to nearby components.

Escalating signs

  • Sticky or weeping surfaces
  • Progressive deformation or shrinkage
  • Strong acidic, camphor-like or chemical odour
  • Packaging bonding to the object

Rubber, foam and elastomers

Common evidence

  • Hardening, cracking and loss of elasticity
  • Chalking, tackiness and surface bloom
  • Flattening, permanent compression and crumbling
  • Sulphur-related staining and odour

Collector judgement

A rubber or foam component may appear complete but no longer perform its intended function. Do not stretch, compress or operate suspect material merely to prove that it has failed; the test may create the loss being assessed.

Escalating signs

  • Powdering or crumbling under no pressure
  • Cracks developing without handling
  • Permanent adhesion to adjacent surfaces
  • Corrosion or staining of nearby metal and paper

Textiles, leather and wood

Common evidence

  • Fading, fibre weakness, fraying and insect damage
  • Leather dryness, cracking, powdering and red rot
  • Wood shrinkage, splitting, warping and veneer lifting
  • Joint failure, finish checking and delamination

Collector judgement

Surface appearance can underestimate structural weakness. Textiles may retain colour while fibres have lost strength; leather may appear intact until flexed; wood movement may be old and stable or newly active. Check seams, folds, attachment points and vulnerable edges without forcing movement.

Escalating signs

  • Fresh frass or live pest evidence
  • Powdering leather or fibre loss
  • Progressive veneer lifting or new cracks
  • Mould, damp odour or dye transfer

Paint, coatings and printed surfaces

Common evidence

  • Fading, chalking, abrasion and gloss loss
  • Flaking, lifting, blistering and crazing
  • Blanching, discolouration, bleed and tackiness
  • Local loss at high points, edges or folds

Collector judgement

Record whether loss affects isolated high points, a primary image, an inscription, an identifying mark or a broad background. Flaking is especially significant because normal handling may continue to remove original material.

Escalating signs

  • Raised or tenting flakes
  • Loose pigment or powder
  • New blistering or sticky coatings
  • Loss across key imagery or inscriptions

Glass, ceramics and stone

Common evidence

  • Clouding, crizzling, weeping and salt efflorescence
  • Glaze crazing, spalling and flaking decoration
  • Staining, scaling and old adhesive failure
  • Stress cracks and repair discolouration

Collector judgement

These materials may look permanent but can remain chemically or mechanically unstable. A crack may be historical and static or actively propagating. Consistent photographs and low-angle lighting are useful for detecting change.

Escalating signs

  • Moist or weeping glass surfaces
  • New salts, powder or flakes
  • Crack extension between examinations
  • Unstable or discoloured old repairs

Electronic and mechanical collectibles

Common evidence

  • Battery leakage, capacitor failure and degraded wiring
  • Perished belts, seals, rollers and internal foam
  • Dried lubricants, corroded connectors and solder failure
  • Magnetic, optical or display degradation

Collector judgement

Cosmetic condition, completeness, tested status, operation, service history, replacement parts and safety should be recorded separately. Untested does not mean working; working does not mean stable; operational testing can be unsafe.

Escalating signs

  • Battery residue or swelling
  • Burning, acidic or unusual internal odour
  • Perished insulation or leaking capacitors
  • Unknown power requirements or unsafe modifications

Domain boundary

Where grading stops and preservation begins

Grading records the present condition and communicates its consequence. Storage, enclosure design, environmental control, isolation, treatment and long-term stabilisation belong primarily to preservation and conservation practice.

A grading page should still identify urgency and handling limits. It should not prescribe solvents, cleaning, deacidification, corrosion removal or treatment recipes. Potentially active or valuable material should be referred to an appropriate specialist rather than experimentally treated by the collector.

Assessment method

A disciplined sequence for turning evidence into a grade

Begin with description, then location, extent, severity, effect and comparison. This prevents a pleasing or alarming first impression from controlling the entire judgement.

Identify the observable change

What can be described without assuming a cause?

Use neutral terms such as yellowed, faded, brittle, tacky, corroded, cracked, warped, stained, powdering or delaminating. Avoid beginning with value-loaded language such as 'lovely patina' or 'only age-related'.

Locate it

Where is the change and what does that location mean?

Record front or back, interior or exterior, edge or centre, exposed or hidden, localised or overall, and whether it affects a structural joint, decorative field, identifying mark or contact point.

Measure the extent

How much of the object or component is affected?

Use repeatable descriptions: isolated, scattered, along the full lower edge, affecting three pages, approximately ten per cent of the surface, or extending twenty millimetres from the spine.

Judge severity

Is the change trace, slight, moderate, severe or extreme?

Severity should reflect visibility, material loss, structural effect, function, safety and handling risk. Extreme deterioration includes active loss, unsafe handling or major destruction, not merely an unattractive appearance.

Which condition axes are changed?

Assess appearance, originality, strength, completeness, function, legibility, safety and future preservation separately before compressing them into an overall grade.

Calibrate against the category

How does this compare with sound surviving examples?

Consider age, material, manufacture, known survivor population, accepted specialist standards and rarity of high-condition examples. Comparison calibrates severity; it does not make deterioration disappear.

Apply grade, qualifier and confidence

What combination communicates the condition honestly?

The overall grade should reflect cumulative condition, but serious defects may impose a ceiling. Add a stability statement and a confidence level rather than forcing every uncertainty into a single number.

Grade mechanics

Incremental deductions, grade ceilings and the weakest-link problem

Not every age-related feature should be averaged into the same calculation. Some changes are minor deductions; others place a practical maximum on the grade.

These features may lower the grade in proportion to visibility and category standards without controlling the whole result.

Grade ceiling

One defect limits the maximum defensible grade

A pristine cover cannot compensate fully for pages that fragment when opened. Averaging severe structural failure against attractive areas produces a misleading result.

  • Severe fading or major water damage
  • Unstable flaking or structural delamination
  • Pervasive staining or significant deformation

Composite collectibles need component grades

Packaging, inserts, labels, fasteners, internal supports, accessories and the primary object can age at different rates. A single headline grade may conceal the most vulnerable component.

An overall result might be “Good, with active stability concern,” but the component record preserves the reason.

Examination

Inspect without becoming the source of damage

Ageing assessment requires more than a front-facing view, but every examination method must be proportionate to the object's vulnerability.

Observe

Begin with unaided and controlled viewing

  • Overall colour balance and deformation
  • Surface coherence, staining and component mismatch
  • Diffuse frontal light for overall appearance
  • Raking or low-angle light for texture, lifting and distortion
  • Transmitted light for suitable paper objects
  • Magnification where detail requires it
Inspect vulnerable interfaces

Deterioration often begins away from the obvious front surface

  • Edges, folds and corners
  • Staples, joins and adhesive lines
  • Contact points and enclosed backs
  • Package interfaces and hidden mounts
  • Internal foam, supports and fasteners

Avoid destructive testing

  • Do not bend brittle paper or stretch old rubber.
  • Do not scrape corrosion, powder or crystalline deposits.
  • Do not smell unknown material closely.
  • Do not operate seized mechanisms or power uncertain electronics.
  • Do not remove tightly adhered packaging or mounts merely to inspect beneath.
  • Do not apply solvents, test-clean an area or open sealed objects without a justified plan.

The inspection must not create the deterioration being assessed.

Remote assessment

Photographs are especially weak evidence for ageing and stability

A photograph can document colour, shape and visible defects, but it cannot reliably communicate many of the properties that distinguish stable ageing from active deterioration.

Often missed remotely

  • Close-ups of suspicious areas
  • Raking-light views for texture and distortion
  • A neutral colour reference where colour matters
  • Images outside reflective sleeves
  • Packaging and object separately where possible

The absence of visible deterioration in photographs should produce a qualified conclusion, not a confident clean bill of health. White balance may make paper look whiter or faded colour appear stronger; reflective packaging may conceal texture; and sealed objects prevent direct assessment of flexibility, odour and internal condition.

Documentation

Separate observation, interpretation, risk and grading effect

Condition records become more useful when they show exactly where fact ends and inference begins.

Observation

Scattered reddish-brown spots across the rear cover, concentrated near the lower edge.

Interpretation

Appearance is consistent with foxing or moisture-associated staining.

Risk statement

No active surface growth was visible, but activity cannot be ruled out from photographs alone.

Grading effect

Moderate visual impact; minor effect on legibility; likely grade-limiting in higher condition ranges.

This is stronger than “some foxing, normal for age.” The detailed record allows a later collector, seller, insurer or specialist to understand the evidence without inheriting the examiner's assumptions.

The goal is not paperwork for its own sake. A repeatable record supports grading, sale disclosure, insurance, monitoring and decisions about handling or specialist referral.

Monitoring

A condition assessment is a snapshot, not a guarantee

Repeatable photographs and measurements can show whether a crack, stain, corrosion product, deformation or polymer change is actually progressing.

Build comparable evidence over time

  • Use the same camera position and similar lighting.
  • Include a scale and a colour target where relevant.
  • Keep file names, views and intervals consistent.
  • Photograph known vulnerabilities in close-up.
  • Record changes in handling response, odour, residue or debris.

“It seems worse” is weak evidence. Matched views and measurements can establish whether a crack is extending, fading is continuing, adhesive staining is migrating, corrosion is spreading or a polymer is shrinking.

Confidence

Lower confidence when access, material knowledge or evidence is limited

A precise-looking grade can overstate what the examination actually supports. Confidence should fall where deterioration is hidden, sealed, treated, remote or materially uncertain.

High confidence

Defect and effect are clear under direct examination

The material is understood, the relevant surfaces and components are accessible, and the stability judgement is supported by direct evidence or repeat records.

Moderate confidence

Condition is clear, but mechanism remains uncertain

The observable defect can be graded, but the cause, depth, future behaviour or treatment history cannot be established confidently.

Low confidence

Photographs, packaging or concealment prevent meaningful assessment

The grade should be provisional where colour balance is unreliable, the item is sealed, deterioration lies beneath a mount, or function and internal condition cannot be examined.

Specialist required

Potentially active, hazardous or materially complex deterioration

Do not convert uncertainty into a confident cause or treatment recommendation. Record the threshold and refer the object for appropriate material expertise.

Domain boundary

Where grading overlaps with restoration, authentication and valuation

Restoration can conceal earlier deterioration, replace material, improve appearance, reduce originality or introduce new ageing behaviour. Grading should record what original deterioration remains, what was added or removed, whether the treatment is documented, and whether the object is now stable.

Age-consistent material change may support an authenticity argument, but it is not proof of authenticity. Likewise, a grade describes condition rather than dictating market value. Rarity, demand, treatment cost and historical importance influence price, but they should not pressure the grader into a more flattering condition description.

Errors to avoid

Common grading myths about age and deterioration

Myth

It is old, so the damage is expected

Expected deterioration remains deterioration. Age may explain why a defect is common, but it does not restore lost strength, surface or function.

Myth

It is natural, so it does not affect grade

Natural oxidation, hydrolysis, acidification and plasticiser loss can be severe and irreversible. Natural chemistry is not a condition exemption.

Myth

The colour is even, so the object is stable

Uniform discolouration can accompany advanced chemical degradation. Colour, strength and activity must be assessed separately.

Myth

The object is sealed, so it is mint

Packaging can conceal deterioration and may itself cause fading, adhesive failure, trapped moisture, corrosion or plastic interaction.

Myth

Cleaning removed the deterioration

Cleaning may remove a deposit while leaving etched, weakened or altered surfaces. It may also add hairlines, bright patches, residue or loss of patina.

All examples do this

Frequency affects collector expectation and market availability. It does not convert deterioration into original condition or prove that the process is harmless.

Action hierarchy

Decide what matters before deciding how attractive it looks

This order prevents eye appeal from masking safety, activity, material loss or structural failure.

Could handling expose people or other objects to harm?

Stop ordinary handling when there may be active mould, leaking batteries, hazardous film, toxic residues, sharp broken parts or unknown chemical deposits.

Is the deterioration still progressing?

Look for fresh loss, residue, odour, expansion, shrinkage, spreading, wetness, new cracking or change since an earlier record.

Are fibres, coating, pigment, metal, emulsion or components being lost?

Loss of original material is generally more serious than colour change alone and may justify a grade ceiling or specialist threshold.

Do not average severe brittleness, delamination or joint failure away against a strong surface or attractive front view.

Separate safe, documented testing from assumptions. Record obscured labels, signatures, images, serial numbers or data as informational loss.

Consider contrast, placement, coverage and eye appeal only after the more serious questions of activity, material loss and structure have been addressed.

Separate original deterioration from later intervention, added material and concealed evidence. Record treatment history and uncertainty.

Specialist threshold

When ageing should stop ordinary grading and trigger advice

Specialist referral is justified where the object may be hazardous, actively losing material, chemically unstable, highly valuable or vulnerable to irreversible treatment mistakes.

A bare number compresses too much. Strong wording tells the reader what is present, whether it is stable and why it matters.

Very Good- stable age-related toning

Uniform cream-to-tan page colour, flexible throughout, with no chipping or spine-fold splitting.

Good- moderate deterioration

Scattered foxing, light cockling and minor edge brittleness. No active mould visible.

Fair- structurally fragile

Extensive browning and brittle page edges with several small losses. Handling should be minimised.
