A smooth 120-mile motorway journey may be safer than an 85-mile route through speed humps, narrow lanes and repeated junctions. Yet the longer route may become less suitable if it demands extra stops, creates driver fatigue or reaches the destination after unloading staff have left. The correct decision considers the whole transport chain, not mileage in isolation.

Route planning is preventive conservation
The aim is to create a controlled passage in which handling is minimised, vehicle movement is predictable, environmental exposure is limited, custody remains clear and the receiving site is ready. A journey that is cheap, short or convenient is not necessarily a well-controlled journey.

The physical and scheduling risk is concentrated in repeated braking, public waiting and the final handover rather than distance.
A safer plan may use an earlier booked slot, a surveyed service entrance, a vehicle that fits the bay, a second handler and a secure fallback holding area. Merely leaving “plenty of driving time” would not control the real hazards.
Plan backwards from a safe arrival
Arrival time is usually more important than departure time. Work backwards from the period when unloading can occur safely, with the right staff, equipment, access and weather protection. A collection that reaches the address but cannot be unloaded has entered an uncontrolled temporary-storage period.

Season, weather and environmental duration
Packaging can slow environmental change, but it does not make a load immune to prolonged heat, cold or humidity differences. The seriousness of exposure depends on the materials, package design, vehicle load-space conditions, journey duration and time spent stationary.

Loading and unloading are skilled, concentration-heavy tasks, not minor additions to driving time.
