Handling during movement is one of the highest-risk periods in the life of a collectible. An object may remain stable for years in a cabinet, archival enclosure or fitted display, yet be damaged within seconds while it is lifted, transferred to a tray, rolled over a threshold, loaded into a vehicle or unpacked at a temporary destination.
The risk does not begin when the object leaves the building, and it does not end when the vehicle stops. Movement includes the decision to move, the condition check, removal from storage, every transfer between hands and supports, staging, loading, temporary placement, unpacking and the final update to the location record. Each transition creates another opportunity for impact, abrasion, bending, vibration, contamination, component loss or simple misidentification.
Central principle
Do not treat movement as the empty space between two storage locations. Treat it as a separate preservation operation with its own plan, controls, documentation and stopping rules.
Collector scenario
The ceramic that only had to cross one room
A collector decides to move a large lidded ceramic from a cabinet to a photography table. The journey is less than ten metres, so no tray is prepared. The collector lifts it by the side handles, carries the lid in place and reaches the table while somebody is still clearing equipment. One handle is an old repair. The collector pauses, shifts grip and the handle separates. The body drops only a short distance, but its rim strikes the table edge and the lid falls onto the floor.
The visible cause is a failed grip. The deeper causes are a chain of preventable decisions: the move was treated as trivial; the old repair was not identified; the lid was not controlled; no support was used; and the destination was not ready. Handling practice is designed to remove these dependencies on improvisation and luck.
Movement is a sequence, not a single lift
A long journey in one well-designed package can be safer than a short journey involving repeated unpacking, handovers and cargo transfers. Distance matters, but the number and quality of transitions often matter more. The practical aim is to reduce handling stages, keep the object supported for as much of the journey as possible and prepare each next state before the current one is disturbed.

The first decision: does the object need to move?
Every movement should have a defined purpose: improved storage, photography, cataloguing, examination, conservation, exhibition, sale, valuation, a house move, hazard evacuation, pest isolation or replacement of storage furniture. Repeatedly taking objects out simply to rearrange, inspect or show them creates cumulative risk even when no single event appears harmful.
Avoidance is not a rule that objects must never move. It is a requirement that the preservation benefit or practical necessity should justify the handling risk. Sometimes the better solution is to move an entire tray, drawer or stable enclosure rather than each object individually. Sometimes a photograph or existing record answers the question without movement at all.
Movement is justified
The present location is unsafe or environmentally unsuitable.
The object requires essential examination, treatment, documentation or evacuation.
The move supports a planned exhibition, sale, loan, valuation or relocation.
The risk has been assessed and suitable controls are available.
Pause and reconsider
The object is being moved only because the route or destination has not been organised.
The same object has already been handled repeatedly for low-value reasons.
Its condition, weight, hazards or weak points are unknown.
The move depends on rushed improvisation, unsuitable equipment or an unprepared destination.
Read the object before touching it
The movement plan must be based on the object's present condition, not on how robust that class of object appears when new. A ceramic handle may be repaired; a furniture joint may have dried and loosened; a plastic figure may have become brittle; a framed work may contain loose glazing; a textile may be tearing beneath fur trim; a metal assembly may be held together by corroded solder.

Biological and chemical hazards
Mould, pest activity, leaking batteries, liquids, pesticide residues, sharp edges and unknown contamination.
Load and orientation
True weight, centre of gravity, strong load-bearing areas, unstable base and whether tilting is permitted.
Load-bearing rule
Support the strongest structural area and the heaviest part of the object - commonly the base - while the second hand provides balance and control. Never assume that a handle, rim, knob, finial, frame, arm, leg, strap, cord or decorative projection remains safe simply because it was once designed to be held.
The principal forms of handling damage
Handling failures rarely belong to one material alone. They arise from the relationship between condition, geometry, support, surface, route and human action. The following cards are designed as judgement aids: what evidence to notice, what that evidence means during movement and how the collector risk develops.
Impact and collision
Evidence
The object must cross doorways, thresholds, vehicle interiors, shelving edges or other constrained spaces, or has a brittle body, hidden crack, old repair or projecting feature.
What it means
The danger is not simply a dramatic drop. A low-speed strike can chip an edge, break a repaired join, shatter glazing or displace an internal component.
Collector risk
Casual carrying, poor clearances and loose movement inside a package allow small errors to become irreversible damage.
Abrasion and surface loss
Evidence
The surface is matte, powdery, gilded, painted, polished, tacky or decorated with decals, friable media or corrosion products.
What it means
Light contact may be harmless while stationary but repeated rubbing during vibration can polish, scratch, transfer or detach material.
Collector risk
Soft wrapping placed directly against a vulnerable surface may become the cause of damage rather than its protection.
Bending, sagging and deformation
Evidence
The object is broad, thin, flexible, softened, warped or weak across its span: paper, card packaging, posters, textiles, leather, records or thin plastics.
What it means
The object's size and geometry matter more than its apparent weight. Unsupported areas can crease, stretch or take a permanent set.
Collector risk
Carrying by corners or two narrow grip points concentrates load and permits twisting when the handler turns or stops.
Vibration and internal movement
Evidence
The journey includes trolleys, lift joints, paving, road travel or repeated transfers, or the object contains loose assemblies and protruding components.
What it means
Vibration can produce repeated collision, abrasion, fatigue at joins and propagation of existing cracks even when no single shock seems severe.
Collector risk
A box that merely surrounds an object does not control it. Space, restraint and geometry determine how it behaves in motion.
Compression and crushing
Evidence
Boxes may be stacked, straps tightened, foam packed around projections or heavy loads placed above lighter enclosures.
What it means
Cushioning and restraint become dangerous when their pressure is carried by brittle edges, raised decoration, glazing, soft plastic or weakened structure.
Collector risk
Protected by packing is not the same as safe to stack, clamp or wedge.
Loss, separation and misidentification
Evidence
The object has lids, keys, stands, weapons, cables, inserts, drawers, shelves or detachable display parts, or passes through several temporary locations.
What it means
Movement separates objects from their familiar place and often from the visual context that makes their identity obvious.
Collector risk
An undamaged object can still be seriously compromised when a component is lost, a box is mislabelled or its location cannot be reconstructed.
Prepare the route and destination before lifting
A handler should not discover a locked door, narrow turn, occupied lift or unprepared table while already carrying the object. Check the entire route from the object's present position to the final support. Measure large or awkward objects rather than relying on visual judgement, including their packed dimensions where a box, crate or trolley changes the clearance.

The floor is not a temporary shelf
Objects placed on the floor "for a minute" are exposed to feet, trolley wheels, leaks, dirt, pests and accidental disposal. Temporary storage should remain raised on shelving, a platform, blocks or a suitable pallet, with enough separation that another package can be accessed without repeatedly moving it.
Handle the support, not the collectible
Direct hand contact should be reduced where a suitable support can carry the object. Rigid boards, padded trays, shallow bins, foam nests, cradles, pallets, A-frames and transit mounts spread load across a larger area and allow the handler to grip something designed for movement. This is especially important for large flexible objects, brittle structures, unstable surfaces and groups of small items.
A useful support does more than fit beneath the object while stationary. It controls what the object can do when the support accelerates, tilts, crosses a threshold or stops. It should prevent sagging, rolling, twisting, sliding and contact with vulnerable surfaces without applying damaging pressure.
Good support behaviour
The load is carried by structurally strong areas.
Flexible spans are continuously supported.
The object cannot slide, roll, rotate or collide.
Projections and delicate surfaces remain free from pressure.
The support itself has safe lifting points and manageable weight.
False protection
A box is too large and permits bouncing or rotation.
Foam contacts flaking paint or presses on a protrusion.
Bubble wrap is placed directly against a tacky, decorated or polished surface.
Straps restrain the package by crushing the object within it.
Added packing makes the load too heavy or difficult to unpack safely.
Hands, gloves and personal preparation
"Always wear cotton gloves" is not a reliable universal rule. Glove choice must balance contamination control with grip, tactile sensitivity and handler safety. Metals, photographs, negatives, polished surfaces, gilding, mould-affected material, lead-containing objects and potentially contaminated specimens commonly require gloves. A stable non-reactive object may sometimes be safer in clean, dry bare hands when loose gloves would reduce control.
Clean bare hands
Suitable only where the material is stable and non-reactive, direct touch is acceptable and improved grip meaningfully reduces drop risk. Hands must be freshly washed, completely dry and free from creams and uncovered cuts.
Cotton gloves
They reduce oil and salt transfer but can fit loosely, slip on smooth surfaces and catch on splintered, rough or lifting surfaces. Dirty cotton gloves transfer contamination.
Close-fitting nitrile gloves
They often provide better dexterity and protection from oils and dirt, but must be changed when dirty, can make hands sweat and are not resistant to every chemical or suitable for every reactive surface.
Before handling, remove rings, watches, bracelets and dangling jewellery; secure loose clothing, hair and lanyards; empty objects from shirt pockets; wear stable closed footwear; and put phones, keys and clipboards aside. Fatigue, distraction, injury and pressure to "just get it done" are themselves movement hazards.
Lifting, carrying and handovers
1.Move close to the object and confirm the destination.
2.Establish secure hand positions around the load-bearing base or prepared support.
3.Use the second hand for balance and control, not to pull on a projection.
4.Lift smoothly without snatching, twisting or sudden tilting.
5.Keep the load close to the body where this does not place clothing against a vulnerable surface.
6.Maintain the required orientation and walk slowly with clear vision.
7.Place the object fully onto the receiving support before releasing either hand.
One object at a time
Do not stack uncontained objects in the arms, hook items over fingers, balance small pieces on a box or carry an object while also operating a door, phone or clipboard.
Several small items may share a tray only when each is separated, none can collide, the load remains manageable and every component is visible or recorded.
Surface-to-surface handover
Avoid passing an object directly from one person's grip to another. Place it on a stable prepared surface so the second handler can establish an independent secure hold. This removes the uncertain moment when neither person fully controls the load.
Multi-person moves require one plan
A two-person move is not simply a one-person lift with extra hands. Assign one lift leader, agree hand positions, decide the direction of travel, identify who watches clearances and use a small command vocabulary such as "ready", "lift", "stop", "lower" and "set down". Only the leader should direct the movement unless someone sees an immediate danger.
A spotter is warranted where the object obscures vision, the route includes stairs or slopes, doorways are narrow, the object is tall or wide, or members of the public may enter the route. The emergency question should be discussed before lifting: where will the object be safely placed if somebody loses grip, balance or visibility?
Trolleys, carts and dollies
Mechanical aids reduce carrying time but introduce wheel vibration, steering, braking, slope and tipping risks. Select equipment by load rating, object dimensions, centre of gravity, route, turning radius, threshold height, wheel type and required orientation - not simply by what happens to be available.

Packing must control the whole object-package system
Wrapping covers a surface. Packing controls how the object, support, restraint, cushioning and outer enclosure behave together. More soft material is not a universal answer: it may create pressure, hide weak points, trap vapours, make the load too heavy or turn unpacking into another high-risk operation.

Boundary: packing materials and packing design
This chapter explains what handling controls require from a package. Detailed selection of contact materials, foam, tissue, board, barriers, crates and short-term enclosures belongs in the related packing chapters. Where a surface is chemically unstable, tacky, friable or unusually sensitive, do not improvise direct-contact materials during the move.
Temporary storage is still storage
The word "temporary" often lowers standards psychologically, yet temporary arrangements commonly last longer than planned. A staging room, transit crate or temporary bay must still provide physical stability, environmental suitability, security, water protection, pest control, identification, safe access and precise location records.
Appropriate temporary arrangements
A secure acclimatisation or quarantine room.
A locked clean store or monitored temporary shelving bay.
A protected transit crate designed to remain closed.
A designated staging area with padded surfaces and controlled access.
A supervised conservation or documentation workspace.

Staging areas should separate incoming and outgoing objects and give each package an explicit status: awaiting packing, condition checked, ready for loading, arrived, awaiting acclimatisation, quarantine or cleared for storage. Arrange packages in loading order so that one object does not have to be repeatedly moved to reach another.
Arrival, acclimatisation and quarantine
A cold package opened immediately in a warm humid room may develop condensation on or within the object. A hygroscopic object moved from humid conditions into dry heated air may change too quickly. There is no universal waiting period: the decision depends on material, object mass, insulation, package permeability, temperature difference, humidity sensitivity and condensation risk.
Incoming objects and packing from another household, auction house, warehouse or institution may carry insects, larvae, mould, frass, contaminated dust, leaking material or active corrosion. Inspect seams, folds, undersides, packaging, wood, textiles and fur before integrating the object with the main collection. Do not open a visibly mouldy or infested package in the principal storage room.

Wet, damaged or disaster-affected objects
Wet objects can be much heavier while also being structurally weaker. Paper, board, textile, leather and composite material may tear under their own weight, stick to adjacent surfaces or present mould and contamination hazards. Do not lift them as though they were dry.
Provide full rigid support, trays, screens or other broad load distribution.
Use separate containment and appropriate personal protective equipment.

Vehicle loading and movement restraint
The best-designed package can fail if it is left free to slide, overturn, bounce or collide inside a vehicle. Packages should be loaded in a stable orientation, restrained against movement, separated from tools and loose equipment, protected from water ingress and arranged so unloading does not require everything else to be shifted first.
For modest local car journeys, stabilise boxes on a flat surface, use seat belts or straps only where they do not crush the enclosure, control temperature, drive smoothly and unload promptly. A parked car is neither secure temporary storage nor a controlled environment.
Labels, components and movement records
Location control is part of physical preservation. A collection can be undamaged yet effectively lost when objects, detached parts and boxes are separated from their identifiers or when a temporary location is too vague to retrieve reliably.
Previous location, new precise location, date, reason, responsible person, package or crate number, packed status and expected return date.

Do not advertise valuable contents on external labels. Keep valuations and sensitive descriptions within controlled movement documentation.

Unpacking and post-move inspection
Unpacking can be as dangerous as packing. Before opening, verify the package, inspect and photograph external impact or water marks, confirm the destination, allow acclimatisation where necessary, obtain any unpacking instructions and identify the expected component count. Knives, staples, screws, crowbars and lids can all damage the object when used or removed carelessly.
Retain the packaging until the object has been checked, every component is accounted for, no damage claim is likely and return transport is not required. Compare the object with pre-move photographs, condition notes and packing diagrams.
When new damage or a loose fragment is found
1.Stop further handling and prevent additional movement.
2.Retain every fragment and record where it was found.
3.Photograph the object, package and relevant packing layers.
4.Do not immediately clean, reattach or discard material.

Myths that make short moves dangerous
Myth: It is only moving to the next room.
Reality: Short journeys still include lifting, doorways, thresholds, braking, temporary set-down and unpacking. Casual treatment often removes the very controls that would have prevented an accident.
Myth: The original retail packaging is automatically the safest option.
Reality: It may be degraded, chemically unsuitable, incomplete or designed for a new object and one distribution journey. Preserve it as part of the collectible where relevant, but assess it separately as transit protection.
Myth: Bubble wrap can touch every surface.
Reality: It can abrade, stick, leave impressions, trap moisture, transfer additives and press on projections. It is normally cushioning outside a suitable contact layer, not a universal surface material.
Myth: More packing is always safer.
Reality: Overpacking can create pressure, excessive weight, trapped vapours, hidden weak points, deformation and dangerous unpacking.
Myth: A handle is the correct place to hold an object.
Reality: Historic handles, straps, rims and decorative features are common sites of hidden weakness and failed repairs. Their original function does not prove their present strength.
A practical hierarchy of movement controls
The hierarchy matters because it prevents collectors from jumping straight to cushioning while leaving the larger causes of damage untouched. Work from elimination and stability towards equipment, coordination and records.

When specialist help is justified
The threshold is not simply whether the object can be lifted. It is whether the team can lift, control, carry, lower and recover from an unexpected problem without endangering the object or the people involved.
