Short-Term Packing Materials

Short-term packing materials protect collectibles only when they are used as parts of a complete system. The safest package is not the one containing the greatest quantity of tissue, foam or bubble wrap. It is the one in which each layer has a defined job: preventing harmful contact, carrying weight, stopping movement, reducing shock, resisting crushing, moderating the environment and guiding the next handler.

The word temporary should never be treated as permission to improvise. A material can scratch a surface during the first lift, transfer adhesive within hours, compress a weak structure during one journey or trap moisture during an overnight stop. Packages also remain closed for longer than planned. Material choice must therefore reflect the collectible, its condition, the journey, the temporary-storage location and the method of unpacking.

The central packing question

What combination of barriers, supports, restraint, cushioning and containment will keep the object stable for the whole period in which it may remain packed?

“What can I wrap this in for a few days?” is too narrow. It assumes wrapping is the main protective act and that the planned duration will not change. Neither assumption is reliable.

Packing is a layered protective system

Transit exposes objects to impact, continuous vibration, rubbing, puncture, compression, bending, water, dust, temperature change and repeated handling. No single material deals with all of these. A useful package separates the jobs so that one layer does not have to perform a function for which it was never designed.

Surface barrier

Separates the collectible from rough, fibrous, adhesive, reactive or textured packing materials.

Typical forms: Conservation tissue, Tyvek, smooth polyethylene sheet, washed undyed cotton or suitable polyester film.

A barrier may prevent rubbing or transfer, but it contributes almost no impact protection.

Structural support

Carries the object through areas strong enough to bear its weight and keeps fragile projections unloaded.

Typical forms: A shaped foam cavity, padded tray, rigid board, cradle, collar, tissue nest or internal form.

A wrapped object can still sag, bend, rotate or rest on a weak handle, rim, joint or blister pack.

Restraint

Stops the object or its inner tray from travelling through the container during lifting, braking or impact.

Typical forms: Fitted blocks, dividers, collars, closed-cell foam stops or a secured inner box.

Restraint should prevent travel without clamping, flattening or loading unstable surfaces.

Cushioning

Reduces energy from knocks, drops and vehicle vibration before it reaches the collectible.

Typical forms: Correctly selected polyethylene foam, engineered foam systems, polyester batting or bubble wrap outside a barrier.

More softness is not automatically safer. Foam that is too hard transmits shock; loose fill permits momentum.

Rigid containment

Resists crushing, puncture, stacking loads and accidental handling while keeping all parts together.

Typical forms: Archival board boxes, polypropylene boxes, corrugated plastic cases, double-wall transit cartons or lined crates.

A rigid wall becomes an impact surface when the contents are not immobilised inside it.

Environmental protection

Moderates realistic threats from rain, dust, pollutants, temperature changes or humidity during the journey and wait period.

Typical forms: An outer waterproof layer, sealed inner enclosure, clean dust cover or designed microclimate.

Sealing can trap moisture and pollutants. Environmental layers should be deliberate, not an automatic plastic wrap.

Information

Preserves identity and tells the next handler how to lift, orient, open, inspect and unpack the package.

Typical forms: Inventory number, contents list, weight, orientation, opening side, lifting points and unpacking photographs.

A package can be physically sound yet fail because someone opens the wrong side or discards an unlabelled loose component.

Myth versus reality: “soft” does not mean “supported”

Myth

If an object is wrapped in enough soft material, it is protected from the journey.

Reality

A soft bundle can still rotate, sag, bear weight through a fragile projection or strike the box wall. Protection comes from support and controlled restraint, with cushioning placed around that stable arrangement.

Choosing common short-term packing materials

Material names are not guarantees. Surface finish, density, additives, cleanliness, previous use and the object’s own chemistry all matter. The cards below describe likely roles rather than universal permissions. A material suitable against a robust glazed ceramic may be wrong against soft vinyl, loose pigment or historic leather.

Conservation tissue

Barrier, interleaving, light padding and shaped nests

Direct contact may be suitable

Useful for

  • Separating adjacent objects and preventing direct contact with foam or bubble wrap
  • Supporting hollow forms, shoes, hats, bags and lightweight costume accessories
  • Interleaving flat paper-based items where the tissue type is appropriate

Cautions

  • It crushes under weight and is not meaningful protection against a serious impact
  • It can snag, abrade or conceal loose material on friable, flaking or powdery surfaces
  • Buffered tissue is not suitable for every photograph, protein-based material, dye or leather object

Closed-cell polyethylene foam

Support, restraint, lining and engineered cushioning

Direct contact may be suitable

Useful for

  • Cut cavities, cradles, corner blocks, collars, dividers and support under strong bases
  • Stopping an inner box from moving within an outer container
  • Reusable transit fittings where the foam remains clean and resilient

Cautions

  • Coarse surfaces can mark vulnerable finishes, so a smooth barrier may still be needed
  • A tight cavity can clamp cracked edges, soft plastics, upholstery or applied decoration
  • Poor cuts, exposed adhesive, loose fragments and absent finger wells make unpacking hazardous

Bubble wrap

Secondary cushioning and void control

Usually needs a barrier

Useful for

  • Cushioning a robust inner container
  • Lining an outer box or filling controlled space around an already protected object
  • Providing temporary shock protection where the bubble pattern cannot contact the collectible

Cautions

  • The texture can imprint wax, soft plastic, varnish, polished surfaces and collectible packaging
  • It does not support weight or protect projections simply because many layers are used
  • Tape should close the wrap to itself and must never touch the collectible

Tyvek

Durable surface barrier, dust cover and support covering

Direct contact may be suitable

Useful for

  • Wrapping textiles and covering padded hangers, trays or rougher foam
  • Making lifting slings, reusable wraps and moisture-resistant labels
  • Providing a smoother, stronger and less lint-producing barrier than tissue

Cautions

  • It is a barrier rather than cushioning
  • Seams, cut edges, marker ink and fastenings must be positioned away from the object
  • Product surfaces can differ, so the intended contact side should be identified

Polyester film

Clear smooth barrier for stable flat material

Direct contact may be suitable

Useful for

  • Interleaving or supporting suitable flat paper items
  • Protecting labels and creating viewing windows that reduce unnecessary unpacking
  • Holding fragments during controlled transfer when static is not a concern

Cautions

  • Static can attract dust or lift flakes, charcoal, pastel and other loose media
  • It is slippery, sharp-edged and provides no cushioning
  • A sealed film wrap can trap moisture

Archival board and corrugated plastic

Folders, trays, dividers, backings and lightweight rigid enclosures

Usually needs a barrier

Useful for

  • Supporting paper, photographs, maps, documents, trading cards and boxed collectibles
  • Making rigid sandwiches, partitions and removable trays
  • Creating splash-resistant or reusable outer structures from corrugated plastic board

Cautions

  • Board can lose strength when wet and both materials can fail under concentrated weight
  • Open flutes and sharp cut edges should be covered or turned away from contents
  • The words acid-free do not establish board composition, strength or photographic suitability

Rigid polyethylene or polypropylene boxes

Outer containment and partial environmental buffering

Usually needs a barrier

Useful for

  • Dust-resistant, stackable containment for smaller supported packages
  • Protecting archival boxes from incidental water exposure
  • Housing a designed microclimate when condition and monitoring justify it

Cautions

  • Loose objects can strike the hard walls
  • A sealed box can trap dampness, mould, cleaning residues or pollutants
  • Unidentified plastics should not be assumed equivalent to polyethylene or polypropylene

Packing blankets and washed cotton

Secondary abrasion protection, covers, slings and covered padding

Usually needs a barrier

Useful for

  • Large furniture, robust sculpture, frames and outer crates
  • Covering foam supports and making broad lifting aids
  • Protecting an already barrier-wrapped surface from incidental knocks

Cautions

  • Commercial blankets may contain dirt, dyes, recycled fibres or metal debris
  • Seams, knots and ties can concentrate pressure
  • Fabric absorbs moisture and can snag unstable surfaces

Materials that require particular caution

Some readily available products are useful around the outside of a package but poor choices against the collectible itself. Emergency use should be understood as a controlled compromise: isolate the object, keep exposure brief and replace the material when the immediate risk has passed.

Polyurethane foam

Unknown commercial inserts and upholstery-type foam

Avoid direct contact

Useful for

  • At most, a tightly controlled brief shipment of a robust modern object when its behaviour is understood

Cautions

  • It may yellow, crumble, become sticky, collapse or adhere to surfaces
  • Its composition and ageing behaviour are often unknown
  • It is a poor direct-contact choice for valuable, porous, historic or chemically sensitive collectibles

Newspaper, domestic tissue and ordinary cardboard

Emergency outer transit material only after full isolation

Avoid direct contact

Useful for

  • A disposable outer shell in an urgent move when the collectible is already protected by clean barriers and supports

Cautions

  • Acidity, lignin, ink, rough fibres, dust, contamination and unknown adhesives can transfer to objects
  • Low-grade paper products crush readily and absorb moisture
  • They should not be mistaken for conservation enclosures

Loose fill, shredded paper and packing peanuts

  • Little collection-care value where object position matters

  • They settle, migrate and allow the object to gain momentum
  • They conceal fragments and make unpacking unpredictable

Tape, rubber bands and direct stretch film

Avoid direct contact

Useful for

  • Closing outer boxes, securing sacrificial packing layers or stabilising an already protected package

Cautions

  • Adhesives and elastic materials can stain, transfer, cut, compress or become bonded to surfaces
  • Stretch film can distort flexible objects and trap condensation
  • Low-tack, archival or removable labels do not make direct application universally safe

Boundary with preservation: packaging materials can become an environment

Once a package is closed, its materials influence humidity, pollutant concentration, abrasion and pressure. Sealing an object can exclude rain while also trapping damp, mould spores, active corrosion or volatile compounds. Waterproofing is normally safest as an outer layer around an already clean, dry and supported inner package.

Desiccants and microclimates should not be improvised. They require suitable containment, correct conditioning, enough capacity and a plan for monitoring.

Four diagnostics that expose a weak package

A package may look professional while still containing a mechanical or environmental failure. These observations help distinguish decorative neatness from real protection.

Diagnostic 1

The package feels soft, but the object can rotate

Evidence: The collectible is surrounded by tissue or bubble wrap, yet its orientation changes when the box is carefully tilted.

Meaning: The package contains padding but lacks structural restraint. The object can accelerate before meeting the container wall.

Collector risk: Handles, repairs, corners, blister packs or projecting details may become the first impact points.

Diagnostic 2

The fitting is neat, but removal requires pulling

Evidence: The object sits tightly in a foam cavity and there is no finger access, tray or lifting tape.

Meaning: The support has become a clamp. The design considers transit but not safe unpacking.

Collector risk: A handler may lift by a weak component, lever against an edge or cut close to the object.

Diagnostic 3

The box is sealed while the contents are still cool or damp

Evidence: Packing took place after a cold journey, cleaning, high humidity or exposure to rain.

Meaning: The package may be excluding external water while trapping internal moisture.

Collector risk: Condensation, mould, corrosion, staining or pollutant build-up may begin during a single overnight stop.

Diagnostic 4

The original retail packaging is doing all the work

Evidence: A collectible box, blister, foam insert or historic carton is being used as the transit container without secondary support.

Meaning: A valuable component of the collectible has been treated as disposable packing material.

Collector risk: The original package may crease, abrade, crush, split or transfer old adhesive while also failing to protect the object.

Transit packing and temporary storage pull in different directions

Transit packing is designed around motion, impact and vibration. Storage support is designed around sustained loading, material compatibility, environmental stability, access and inspection. A travel fitting can therefore become harmful when it remains closed for months.

During transit

  • Prevent acceleration and collision.
  • Reduce shock and vibration.
  • Resist puncture, crushing and weather.
  • Preserve orientation through repeated handling.

During temporary storage

  • Avoid long-term compression or imprinting.
  • Use chemically compatible contact layers.
  • Keep labels visible and enable inspection.
  • Prevent moisture and pollutant accumulation.

When the package must do both

Build for transit risk, but choose contact materials and pressure levels that remain acceptable during delay. Add an inspection date rather than relying on the word temporary.

Collector scenario: the “weekend move” that becomes three months

A collector moves carded figures to a relative’s spare room during building work. Each item is tightly wrapped in bubble wrap and stacked in a large plastic box. The work overruns. Heat builds in the room, the bubble pattern presses into glossy card, and the weight of upper items bows the lower blisters.

The failure was not that bubble wrap is never useful. It was assigned the wrong jobs. A better system would support each retail package in a rigid tray, maintain clearance around the blister and printed card, use a smooth barrier where required, prevent stacking pressure and set a date for inspection if temporary storage continues.

Object-specific packing judgement

The same packing stock behaves differently around different materials and forms. These are starting principles, not substitutes for assessing the actual object.

Paper, comics, maps and photographs

Support the full area with archival folders, boards, suitable sleeves or a rigid sandwich. Prevent bending, floating corners and overfilled folders. Polyester film is inappropriate against powdery or pressure-sensitive media, and photographic materials require photographically suitable enclosures.

Books

Support the boards and text block without compressing the spine or joints. Use correctly sized boxes, four-flap enclosures or a tray for fragile volumes. Modest voids may be filled with smooth foam or tissue, but books should never be lifted by the headcap.

Ceramics and glass

Support the body through strong areas, not handles, stems, spouts, rims or old repairs. Provide individual compartments, clearance around projections and a shaped nest that prevents rotation. Pack lids separately when their condition and construction permit.

Metals

Keep packing clean and dry and avoid moisture-retaining or contaminated materials. Different metals respond differently to pollutants and humidity. Do not seal actively corroding or damp metal without specialist advice.

Textiles and costume

Prevent sharp folds, crushing, snagging and concentrated load with tissue forms, padded boards, rolls or suitable hangers. Heavy, beaded, bias-cut, brittle or weak-shouldered garments may be damaged by hanging even for a short period.

Plastics and rubber

Avoid heat, direct pressure, PVC sleeves, tight bubble wrap, polyurethane foam and sealed mixed groups of deteriorating polymers. Support without compression and isolate visibly degrading items from neighbouring objects.

Paintings and framed works

Prevent any contact with the painted face. Use corner blocks, rigid boards, frame travel systems or crates, and confirm that the work is secure in the frame. Carry upright unless the construction requires another orientation.

Collectible boxes, blister packs and carded figures

Treat retail packaging as part of the condition-sensitive object. Use a rigid outer box and internal tray with clearance around corners, hanger tabs, windows and blisters. Tight wrapping often transfers texture and creates crushing pressure.

Models, miniatures and figures

Identify weapons, antennae, fingers, wings, flags and glued scenic elements before packing. Support the base or strong body areas and leave air around projections. Soft material pushed between details can cause breakage during removal.

A collector’s packing decision sequence

Material selection comes after object assessment and route planning, not before them. This sequence keeps the package tied to real hazards rather than to whatever supplies happen to be available.

Read the object before choosing materials

Ask: What is it made from, where is it weak, which surfaces are sensitive and which areas can safely bear weight?

Then: Record cracks, repairs, loose parts, tacky coatings, powdery surfaces, fragile projections and original packaging before anything is wrapped.

Define the complete exposure

Ask: How will it travel, how many times will it be handled, where will it wait and how long might the wait become?

Then: Design for the actual chain of custody, including depots, vehicles, stacking, loading bays and a temporary store that may be less controlled than promised.

Assign one job to every layer

Ask: Which layer prevents contact, carries weight, restrains movement, absorbs shock, resists crushing and controls the environment?

Then: Remove redundant material and add missing functions. A thick bundle is not a substitute for a coherent system.

Make unpacking part of the design

Ask: Can another person identify the object, open the correct side and lift it without touching a weak area?

Then: Add finger wells, lifting tapes, removable trays, opening tabs, labels and photographs of the packing sequence.

Test without abusing the object

Ask: Does the fitting prevent rotation and lid contact while leaving clearance around fragile details?

Then: Use a cautious lift-and-tilt test where safe, reopen the package and inspect for pressure marks, movement, shifted blocks or loose fragments. Never shake a valuable object as a test.

Plan for delay and inspection

Ask: Would the materials remain safe if the package stayed closed for weeks rather than days?

Then: Use storage-compatible contact layers, record the packing date and define when the package must be checked or unpacked.

How tight should the package be?

The object should not travel freely, but it should not be squeezed. The distinction is between controlled compression in the cushioning and damaging pressure on the collectible itself.

Too loose

The object can rotate or accelerate before striking the container. Loose parts and adjacent objects can collide.

Controlled

Support acts through strong areas, projections have clearance, the lid does not bear on the object and cushioning compresses predictably around the fitting.

Too tight

Foam clamps edges, wraps distort flexible parts, void fill bows the lid or the object must be pulled free during unpacking.

Reusing packing materials

Reuse can be economical and responsible, but the previous life of a material matters. Reject anything dirty, damp, stained, crushed, permanently compressed, sticky, yellowed, brittle, odorous, pest-affected or of unknown composition. A reused fitting should still match the object and journey for which it is being used.

Documentation is part of the package

Specific instructions are more useful than a generic FRAGILE label. “Keep upright,” “lift from base,” “do not stack” and “open this side” tell the handler what to do. Photographs of each packing layer can also prevent improvisation during return transit.

When specialist packing is warranted

Professional packing is not merely a luxury for expensive objects. It is justified whenever the consequences of a mistaken support point, inadequate cushion or unsafe lifting method exceed what ordinary collector improvisation can reasonably control.

  • The object is exceptionally valuable, unique or irreplaceable.
  • Paint, decoration, corrosion products or structural material are already loose.
  • The object is large, heavy, top-heavy, awkward or hazardous to handle.
  • The journey involves international freight, multiple carriers, depots or insurer requirements.
  • A painting, manuscript, historic textile or complex mixed-material object requires a custom fitting.
  • The object is climate-sensitive or will travel in a sealed microclimate.
  • Vibration, shock or stacking loads must be engineered rather than estimated.
  • Existing deterioration may need stabilisation before the object can safely move at all.

Stop before packing when movement itself is unsafe

If paint, decoration, corrosion layers, joins or structural material are already loose, packing may convert a manageable condition problem into an immediate loss. The correct action may be to postpone movement until a conservator has stabilised the object or specified a safe handling and support method.
