Unpacking and Reacclimatisation
Unpacking is a controlled transition, not the casual removal of wrapping at the end of a journey. A collectible can survive every impact and vibration of transport, then be harmed at the destination by condensation, sudden humidity change, loss of support, premature handling, forced movement or an undocumented condition change.
The collector's task is to move the object from one environmental and mechanical system into another without creating a final preventable loss. The safest sequence is: receive, stabilise, inspect, unpack methodically, compare condition, document and only then place the object into temporary storage, permanent storage or display.
Central principle
Arrival is not the end of the move
A package protects against impact, abrasion, dirt and handling, but it may also slow changes in temperature and relative humidity. The air, object and packing materials inside can therefore remain different from the destination room long after delivery.
Opening removes that buffer. Reacclimatisation is the deliberate reduction of the environmental difference before the object is fully exposed.
Why rapid environmental change causes damage
The relevant question is not simply whether the room is generally suitable. It is whether the object, the air around it and the package have approached that room closely enough for opening to avoid a sharp local event.
Temperature
A warm room can wet a cold object
When a cold surface is below the room air's dew point, moisture can condense as droplets, haze or microscopic wetting. Metals, photographs, glass, electronics, coatings, paper and enclosed objects may all be affected.
Moisture exchange
Hygroscopic materials keep responding after the van stops
Paper, board, wood, leather, parchment, textiles, ivory, bone, horn, canvas and some adhesives absorb and release water vapour. Sudden change can produce swelling, shrinkage, distortion, stiffness or internal stress.
Composite response
Joined materials rarely move together
Paint, wood, paper labels, metals, leather, glazing, mounts and adhesives can react at different rates. The damage often appears at interfaces: lifting, cracking, loosening, shear or loss of adhesion.
Packaging
The crate is part of the climate system
Insulation, trapped air and vapour-resistant layers slow environmental change. Opening removes that buffer. A large dense object may remain cold long after the package exterior feels ordinary.

The winter parcel that looks ready to open
A boxed camera, medal group or photographic archive arrives from an unheated van. The cardboard exterior warms quickly indoors and no longer feels especially cold. The dense object, metal fittings, glass and trapped internal air may still be well below room temperature.
Opening immediately admits warm humid air to those colder surfaces. The parcel can appear physically undamaged while the act of opening creates the moisture event. The correct response is to place the package in a stable secure room, retain sealed layers and allow the internal system time to approach the destination conditions.
A safe arrival sequence
The sequence matters because each stage preserves evidence and support for the next. Skipping directly to the object can turn a manageable concern into damage, or make it impossible to establish when a change occurred.
Prepare the destination
Make the receiving room secure, clean, dry, stable and large enough for safe handling. Set out a padded work surface, supports, tools, camera and records before the package arrives.
Verify and photograph the shipment
Match packages to the movement list. Record seals, orientation, wetness, crushing, punctures, odours, tampering and temperature concerns before anything is opened or rearranged.
Stabilise the closed package
Place it upright on a level surface, off cold or damp floors, away from direct sun, radiators, air-conditioning outlets and external walls where local condensation may occur.
Respect sealed layers
Treat inner bags, barrier films and moisture-controlled enclosures as functional protection. Do not break a seal merely because the outer crate has been opened.
Choose a defensible waiting period
Use journey history, package construction, temperature difference, object sensitivity and monitoring data. A fixed number of hours is a precaution, not proof that the object is safe to expose.
Unpack in reverse order
Photograph each layer, identify load-bearing restraints, support the object before removing structural blocks and retain all materials until condition and component checks are complete.
Compare condition and place securely
Look for change against the pre-move record. Document before cleaning or adjustment, then move the object to a prepared holding, storage or display support.
How long should a package remain closed?
There is no universal waiting period. Twenty-four hours is a common cautious rule after air transport, uncontrolled vehicle travel or a substantial environmental transition, but it is a risk-management convention rather than a physical guarantee.
A small parcel may approach room conditions within hours. A large insulated crate containing dense metal, stone or glass can retain a temperature difference much longer. Object-specific instructions, lender requirements and direct monitoring always take precedence over an elapsed-time rule.
Lower transition risk
A short settling period may be proportionate
The journey was short and controlled; departure and destination conditions were similar; the object is small, robust and not moisture-sensitive; the package is dry, intact and neither hot nor cold; no special instructions apply.
Cautious default
Around 24 hours may be defensible
The object travelled by air or in an uncontrolled vehicle, crossed a marked seasonal boundary, arrived in a substantial or insulated package, or contains paper, wood, textiles, leather, photographs, paint or mixed materials.
Extended transition
Consider 48 hours or specialist advice
The crate is large, the object is dense or layered, the climate change was extreme, the object is irreplaceable or unstable, monitored conditions are still changing, or lender and conservator requirements demand more time.
Stop condition
Do not proceed routinely
The package is wet, strongly odorous, severely damaged, visibly infested, potentially hazardous, subject to a triggered shock or tilt indicator, or may contain an unstable object. Secure, photograph and escalate instead.
A practical equilibrium test
Full moisture equilibrium may take far longer than the usual waiting period. The immediate aim is narrower: reduce the difference enough that opening does not create surface condensation, abrupt humidity exposure, severe temperature shock or damaging dimensional stress.
Without a logger, combine journey history, package type, package surface temperature, room conditions, weather exposure, object sensitivity and a deliberately cautious delay. An infrared thermometer can assist with surface comparison, but it is not an exact reading of the object's core temperature.
Unpacking without losing support or evidence
Before opening, clear the route and work surface, remove jewellery and snagging clothing, prepare gloves where appropriate, place trays for small components and make sure enough people are present. Decide where every layer and fastener will go before it is removed.
Open with controlled tools
- Use a guarded or shallow blade and assume the object sits directly beneath the cardboard.
- Avoid knives near canvas, textiles, books, photographs, sleeves, inflatable cushions and barrier film.
- Keep labelled bags ready for screws, ties, clips and loose fittings.
Reverse the packing logic
- Photograph each layer before removal.
- Identify which blocks carry weight and which merely prevent movement.
- Provide external support before removing structural restraints.
- Transfer the object directly to a prepared padded support.
Action hierarchy
When something appears wrong
- Stop handling and keep the object supported.
- Photograph the whole object, the detail and the surrounding packing.
- Retain every fragment, restraint and packaging layer.
- Record the date, place, people present and circumstances.
- Compare with departure photographs and the pre-move condition record.

- Seek conservation advice before cleaning, straightening, powering, gluing or testing.
Read the package as evidence
Evidence
Fresh loose material
Paint flakes, ceramic chips, veneer, rust scale, broken fasteners, insect debris or foam fragments can be evidence. Bag and label them with their exact find location; do not discard or reattach them.
Meaning
A changed support system
Shifted blocks, slack ties, compressed foam or displaced accessories show how forces moved through the package. They may explain damage even when the outer box appears intact.
Collector risk
Cleaning can erase the sequence of events
Wiping dust, corrosion product, moisture or debris before photography can destroy evidence needed to distinguish packing, transit, unloading and unpacking damage.
Condition checking after unpacking
Condition checking is comparative. The question is not whether the object looks generally good or bad, but whether it differs from its documented state before movement. Use previous photographs, written reports, restoration records, packing images and known-defect notes.
Examine the whole object and then work systematically across fronts, backs, undersides, edges, corners, joints, mounts, handles, projections, repair areas, surfaces that touched packing and all detachable components. Use consistent lighting and magnification where useful.
Signs that deserve comparison and documentation
Material-specific judgement
The same waiting period does not create the same protection for every collectible. Material, construction, thickness, prior repair and enclosure determine both how quickly the object changes and what kind of handling is unsafe immediately after transit.
Paper, books, comics and cards
Do not force, flatten or warm
Watch for cockling, curling, blocking, tackiness, transferred ink and dampness. Keep cold sleeved material closed until warmed, support books from below and let compressed items relax naturally.
Photographs, film and negatives
Protect the image layer from condensation
Keep cold-stored or winter-transported material sealed until sufficiently warm. Look for droplets, emulsion softness, sticking, curl, glass-plate cracking and chemical odours. Never wipe an image surface.
Metals, coins, medals and militaria
Surface dryness can hide a cold core
Allow sealed packages to warm before opening. Check recesses, coatings, mixed-metal joints and salt-bearing surfaces. Do not polish, oil or apply corrosion products as an arrival response.
Glass, ceramics and stone
Dense objects change temperature slowly
Avoid strong heat, inspect old cracks and repaired joins, and support from strong areas. Porous ceramics and stone may also show salt activity after moisture change.
Wood, furniture and painted wood
Binding and movement are warnings, not invitations to force
Check joints, veneer, panels, drawers, doors and finishes. A part that tightened after movement may need time to stabilise; forcing it can convert temporary dimensional change into permanent damage.
Textiles, costume and leather
Maintain support while restraints come away
Remove tissue, rolls and internal forms only when the object is safely supported. Check for dampness, dye transfer, snags, mould odour, tightened leather and detached trims. Do not steam, iron or dress material after transit.
Plastics, rubber and modern materials
Cold brittleness and heat tack require opposite cautions
Inspect clips, joints, foam contact areas and films for cracking, deformation, oily deposits, transfer or adhesion. Do not peel attached wrapping away forcibly.
Electronics, cameras, watches and mechanisms
Do not power up during acclimatisation
Condensation can form internally as well as externally. Keep equipment sealed until warm, inspect batteries, lenses, screens and lubricated mechanisms, and avoid testing where moisture is suspected.
Slabbed, encapsulated and cased collectibles
A holder reduces handling, not climate risk
Allow the complete enclosure to acclimatise. Check for cracked cases, shifted contents, flexing, seal failure, trapped dampness and abrasion against internal supports.
Boundary with preservation
Reacclimatisation is not quarantine
Reacclimatisation manages temperature and moisture transition. Quarantine isolates incoming material while pests, mould, contaminated packaging or other biological hazards are assessed. One procedure does not replace the other, and an incoming object may require both.
Isolate rather than integrate when there are live insects, larvae, webbing, cast skins, frass, fresh holes, dampness, mould, strong musty odour, unexplained powder, rodent evidence or a history of storage in sheds, barns, lofts or damp basements. Inspect reused cardboard, timber, textiles and cushioning separately because packaging can be the pest route.
Temporary storage after unpacking
An object waiting for installation or permanent storage remains in movement from a risk perspective. The carrier may have left, but the object is still vulnerable to misidentification, unstable stacking, accidental contact, pest transfer and loss of its packing relationship.
Maintain control
- Keep each object linked to its box, label and inventory entry.
- Retain vulnerable supports beneath or around the object.
- Restrict access and maintain adequate aisle space.
- Preserve unpacking and condition records with the movement file.
Maintain physical safety
- Use stable shelving and keep items off the floor.
- Separate heavy objects from fragile objects.
- Do not stack beyond the strength of packages or supports.
- Do not leave unpacked objects unsecured on work tables overnight.

Slow down when uncertainty is material
Seek a conservator, experienced art handler, lender representative or insurer before routine opening when the object is exceptionally valuable, irreplaceable, known to be environmentally sensitive, already lifting or cracked, packed in a complex bespoke system, suspected to contain hazardous material, or associated with a wet, contaminated or severely damaged package.
Specialist attendance is not an admission that damage has occurred. It is a way to preserve evidence and avoid converting uncertainty into damage through an irreversible first action.
