Photographing Edges, Corners & High Points
Edges, corners and projecting high points are wear-bearing structures. They are often the first parts of a collectible to record impact, rubbing, storage pressure, repeated handling or movement inside packaging, yet they are also among the easiest areas to conceal in an otherwise attractive photograph.
A single front-facing image may suggest that an item is clean while failing to show a softened corner, a split seam, a chipped rim, a polished ridge or a crack at the base of a projection. Condition photography therefore needs to treat these areas as deliberate photographic subjects rather than incidental parts of an overall view.
The goal is not to dramatise every mark. It is to create a record from which a future viewer can locate the area, understand its three-dimensional form, see the actual defect and distinguish wear from manufacture, repair, glare or photographic distortion.
Collector scenario
The box that looked excellent from the front
A boxed game is photographed square-on with soft frontal light. Its artwork is clean, the colours are accurate and no major loss is visible. The image appears convincing. When the item arrives, however, the lower-left corner is compressed, the printed paper has lifted from the board and an old retouch disguises exposed greyboard at the tip.
None of those facts required specialist equipment to disclose. A three-quarter corner view, a shallow side profile and one raking-light detail would have shown the changed geometry, lifted layer and gloss mismatch. The failure was not image quality; it was photographic coverage.
Understanding the subject
Why vulnerable boundaries deserve their own photographs
Edges, corners and high points are not interchangeable details. Each records a different relationship between material, geometry and contact, so each asks for a slightly different photographic judgement.
Edges
Boundaries reveal repeated contact
An edge is where a principal surface terminates or two surfaces meet. It may be cut, folded, bound, stitched, painted, plated, bevelled or moulded. Because it is exposed, it often records abrasion before the broader face does.

Corners
Geometry changes as well as material
Corners combine two or more edges and concentrate impact into a small area. Damage may not merely remove material; it can alter the original shape through rounding, crushing, folding, inward displacement or separation at a joint.

High points
Projection makes contact selective
Raised lettering, moulded ridges, book spine bands, coin relief, ceramic handles, model extremities and frame ornament contact other surfaces before the surrounding field. Selective wear on projections can reveal handling, polishing, packaging contact or repeated movement.

Evidence model
A strong record answers three questions
The best condition set moves from orientation to explanation. Each image has a job, and no single macro photograph can perform all three.
Level 1
Location
A whole-object image establishes identity, orientation and where the affected area sits. Without it, even a sharp macro image may be impossible to place reliably.
Level 2
Form
A medium-distance angled view shows the relationship between face, edge, corner or projection. This is where displacement, depth and geometry become understandable.
Level 3
Condition
A close detail resolves fibres, coating loss, cracks, filling, lifted layers, corrosion, polish or deformation. Add scale when physical extent cannot otherwise be judged.
The evidential test: could another collector identify which area is shown, understand its shape, judge the extent of the condition and return to the same place later? If not, the image may be visually impressive but remains a weak record.
Action hierarchy
The essential photographic sequence
Plan the sequence before handling the object. Complete all safe views from one position before turning or lifting it again.
Orient the viewer
Begin with the complete object in neutral, even light. The frame should establish identity, normal orientation and the relationship between the area of concern and the whole item.
Work systematically around the object
Record each relevant edge, rim or boundary in a repeatable order. For flat objects this usually means top, right, bottom and left; for three-dimensional objects include base, upper rim, rear edges and any concealed return edges.
A planned rotation sequence is stronger evidence than a group of random attractive angles.
Isolate corners and intersections
Photograph important corners individually, keeping the tip and adjoining portions of both edges in focus. Where front and reverse differ, record both faces rather than assuming one represents the other.
Show projection and relief
Use a three-quarter overview for raised lettering, rims, ridges, handles and other high points. This reveals which features stand proud of the surface and where contact wear is concentrated.
Move closer to the defect
Take a detail view that resolves the actual condition: chip depth, lifted layers, fibre disruption, paint loss, crack direction, flattened relief or a change in gloss.
Add scale without sacrificing the view
Where size matters, place a suitable metric scale in the same plane as the defect and close enough to be read. Then take a duplicate without the scale so the defect remains unobstructed.
Repeat ambiguous evidence under changed light
If a ridge might be a dent, glare might be wear, or lifting is difficult to interpret, photograph again with light from the opposite direction or with a different lighting mode.
Camera position
Choose angles for the question being asked
A view is useful because of the condition information it reveals, not because it looks dramatic. Use several restrained views rather than one extreme angle.
Baseline
Straight-on
Best for alignment, symmetry, missing areas, broad colour loss and comparison between opposite sides. It is weak at showing depth, raised layers and compression.
Most useful general view
Three-quarter
Often the strongest single explanatory image because it shows the principal face, the edge, the corner geometry and the depth of a chip or projection together.
Layer and profile evidence
Edge-on
Use for delamination, bends, board thickness, warped cards, split layers, compressed corners, lifted veneer and projecting flakes. Keep enough separation from the background for the silhouette to remain legible.
Height variation
Grazing-angle
A shallow camera angle can reveal raised fibres, dents, creases, lifting and uneven repairs. Retain a less distorted view as well, because extreme angles exaggerate perspective.
Avoid wide-angle distortion
Do not push a phone or wide-angle lens extremely close to a corner. The nearest tip may appear disproportionately large, straight edges may bow and converging lines may suggest deformation that does not exist. Step back, use a longer focal length where available and crop only enough to preserve useful resolution.
Lighting decisions
No single lighting arrangement reveals every defect
Treat lighting as a set of complementary examinations. Begin with a neutral baseline, then add a second image designed to reveal height, gloss, translucency or silhouette.
Diffuse, even light
Best for
- baseline colour

Caution: It can make shallow creases, lifting and gloss changes disappear. Use it as the truthful baseline, not as the only view.
Raking light
Best for
- dents and compression
- corner creases
- flaking and lifted layers
- warping and repaired losses
Caution: Low-angle shadows can make minor topography appear more severe. Pair the image with the diffuse baseline.
Specular or reflected light
Best for
- polished high points
- scratches and scuffs
- coating loss
- local changes in gloss or varnish
Caution: A bright reflection can hide the very surface being recorded. Move light and camera deliberately rather than accepting accidental glare.
Backlighting
Best for
- thin tears
- edge thinning
- cracks in film or plastic
- missing fibres and translucent delamination
Caution: Backlighting alters normal colour and tone. It is an analytical supplement, not a substitute for ordinary illumination.
Rim or silhouette light
Best for
- broken tips
- irregular outlines
- fine fibres
- dark edges against dark objects
Caution: A halo can make an incomplete edge look cleaner than it is. Control the brightness and keep a conventional view.
Direct on-camera flash
Best for
- rarely the preferred condition view
Caution: It tends to flatten form, overexpose high points, create hard shadows under projections and turn glare into false evidence. Avoid it where controlled lighting is possible.
Background and exposure
Make the boundary visible without manufacturing contrast
A background should separate the object from its surroundings while preserving truthful highlights, shadows and colour. Changing background for a detail is acceptable when the file record makes clear that the images belong to the same object.
Light background
Strong separation for dark objects
Useful for black plastics, tarnished metal, dark card edges and silhouettes. Pale chips, fibres and exposed board may disappear against it.
Dark background
Useful for pale and translucent edges
Can reveal white paper fibres, light ceramics and clear chips. Deep shadows may merge with it and make a complete dark edge appear missing.
Mid-grey background
The safest general baseline
Usually gives moderate contrast while preserving highlight and shadow detail. It also reduces the risk of reflected colour contaminating the object.
Protect highlight information
Glossy corners, plated ridges and varnished high points can clip to featureless white. Once the highlight is lost, scratches, polish and coating condition cannot be judged. Review the image at full size rather than trusting the small camera preview.
Protect shadow information
A damaged dark corner against black can collapse into silhouette. Increase exposure or change the background rather than allowing the missing detail to be mistaken for a clean edge. Bracket exposures for highly reflective or contrast-heavy objects.
Diagnostic photography
What the image must help the viewer distinguish
A condition photograph should not merely display a mark. It should help resolve competing explanations for what the viewer sees.
Abrasion
Whitening, exposed substrate or reflected light?
A bright line along a dark edge may be genuine surface loss, an isolated chip, light reflected from an intact glossy edge or even glare from a sleeve. Compare diffuse and oblique views before naming the defect.
Loss
Chipping versus flaking
A chip removes material at the edge; a flake is a lifting or detached surface layer. Show the full affected edge, then an angled detail that reveals depth, undercutting or raised material.
Layer failure
Delamination hides in profile
A separated laminate, board skin, veneer or synthetic covering may look like a harmless line from the front. A low side view reveals the gap. Do not squeeze layers together for the photograph.
Impact
Compression can exist without material loss
Dropped books, boxes and framed objects may retain their surface covering while the corner beneath has moved inward. Front, side and diagonal views are needed to show displacement.
Surface change
High-point wear may become shinier
Repeated handling can polish a matte projection rather than remove it. Use a controlled reflected-light view to reveal gloss difference and a diffuse image to preserve normal colour.
Structural risk
Cracks often begin at the base of projections
Handles, limbs, pegs and projecting ornament act as levers. Photograph the feature in context, then the joint from more than one side. Never flex it to make the crack visible.
Manufacture, repair and concealment
Irregular does not automatically mean damaged
Hand cutting, production tooling and finishing can create edge features that resemble later loss. Conversely, cosmetic repair may make a damaged corner look unusually regular.
Possible manufacturing evidence
- deckled or hand-cut paper edges
- mould seams, casting gates and trimming marks
- factory crimping, punch marks and die-cut fibres
- uneven glaze termination or rough ceramic foot rings
- intentional distressing and hand-applied paint variation
Repetition on comparable examples, regularity, matching finish inside the irregularity and continuation beneath original coatings may support a production origin.
Possible intervention evidence
- colour or ageing that does not match adjoining material
- filler crossing original fibres or overpaint beyond the loss
- different gloss, smoothing or sanding marks
- rebuilt tips, recreated box corners or replaced veneer
- adhesive residue, filled chips and altered texture under raking light
Record ordinary, raking and reflected-light views before considering specialist imaging. Do not raise contrast so aggressively that a tentative difference appears conclusive.
Focus and scale
Resolve the condition, not the accessories around it
Focus placement and depth
Focus on the actual damaged surface. The nearest tip, ruler or undamaged projection may sit on a different plane from the crack or lifted layer. Take separate views when the full feature cannot be kept sharp at one angle.
A tripod, low ISO, timer or remote release improves repeatability. Focus stacking can help with deep macro subjects, but retain the component frames and check that processing has not duplicated fibres, erased cracks or invented transitional detail.
Scale and orientation
Place the scale near the defect, parallel to the photographed surface and in the same plane. It must not touch a fragile area, conceal the edge or cast a strong shadow. A scale several centimetres forward or behind can create a misleading apparent size.
Use object-based terms: top, bottom, left, right, front, reverse, spine, fore-edge, obverse, reverse or clock-face position. Avoid “the corner on the right” unless viewer-right and object-right cannot be confused.
Object safety
The photograph must not create the next defect
Condition coverage is always subordinate to safe handling. The strongest record is the one obtained without placing new stress on the vulnerable area.
- Use padded, stable supports that do not press on the high point being recorded.
- Never balance a ceramic, glass, book or model on its damaged rim or corner.
- Do not flex a projection or open a crack to make it visible.
- Minimise repositioning by planning views before handling.
- Keep adhesive labels, rulers and background paper off the object.
- Photograph detached fragments beside the item, separately with scale and in their storage container.
- Do not reinsert loose chips or flakes solely to improve appearance.
- Where removal from a holder is unsafe, photograph enclosed and state that limitation in the record.
Material judgement
Different objects place different evidence at the boundary
The core sequence remains the same, but the vulnerable structures and most revealing views change by material and object type.
Paper, cards and prints
Fibre disruption, edge whitening, corner shape, creases, thinning and layer separation.

Myth versus reality
Common shortcuts that weaken condition evidence
Myth
A sharp overall photograph proves the corners are sharp.
Reality
Distance, depth of field, dark backgrounds and holders can conceal rounding, compression, fuzzing or splitting. Important corners need their own resolved views.
Myth
One dramatic raking-light image is the most honest record.
Reality
Raking light is diagnostic, but it exaggerates topography. A defensible record pairs it with neutral diffuse illumination.
Myth
A macro photograph is automatically strong evidence.
Reality
Without an orientation image and a form view, the viewer may not know where the macro detail belongs or how it relates to the object.
Myth
A sleeve, slab or case does not materially affect the photograph.
Reality
Enclosures can introduce glare and scratches, hide edge thickness, compress loose layers or create false bright lines. Record that the item was photographed enclosed.
Myth
Every irregular edge should be described as damage.
Reality
Deckled edges, casting gates, mould seams, die-cut fibres, trimming marks and glaze terminations may be original manufacture. Photograph first; interpret cautiously.

Photography and written description perform different jobs. The image shows appearance; the record fixes location, extent, date, interpretation and uncertainty.

Example condition entry
Lower-left front corner compressed over an area approximately 9 × 6 mm. Printed covering paper abraded and locally lifted, exposing grey board at the tip. A diagonal crease extends approximately 18 mm into the front panel. No detached fragments observed.
An annotated copy may use arrows, circles, outlines, numbers, scale bars or orientation markers, but the unannotated original should remain preserved and the annotation must not obscure the defect.
Monitoring
Repeatability turns photographs into a condition baseline
Edges and high points often change incrementally. Small flakes detach, cracks lengthen, layers lift and fresh substrate appears. Comparison only becomes meaningful when the method is repeatable.
Compare for crack extension, enlarging chips, increasing edge lift, new stress whitening, progressive fraying, new corrosion, lost flakes, greater compression or newly exposed substrate. Where change is suspected, include a metric scale and fixed reference points.
Reliability
Misleading photographic practices
Condition images may become unreliable through careless technique or deliberate presentation. A truthful photograph does not make every defect dramatic; it makes the defect reasonably discoverable and interpretable.

Escalate when the act of photographing could cause harm, when the record carries formal consequences or when the evidence requires controlled specialist interpretation.
