Surface Evidence

Surface evidence is the physical information carried on, within or immediately beneath a collectible's visible outer layer. It includes obvious scratches, stains and corrosion, but also subtler changes in gloss, texture, coatings, fingerprints, polishing, cleaning residues, retouching, manufacturing marks and shallow deformation.

Condition photography is not successful merely because the object looks clear or attractive. A useful image set must allow another person to recognise the feature, locate it on the object, compare it with surrounding material and understand the limits of what the photograph can prove.

The photograph should preserve the evidence, not merely improve the appearance.

A softly lit overall image may be truthful as an identification view while still being inadequate as a condition record. Surface evidence often survives only when the lighting, angle, scale and sequence are chosen specifically for it.

Reading the surface

What a surface can contain

The visible exterior may be a stack of original material, finishes, decoration, later coatings, restoration materials and accumulated deposits. One photograph can therefore record several histories at once.

Original manufacture

Marks that belong

Casting texture, mould seams, brushwork, printing patterns, machining marks, natural grain, plate impressions and hand-finishing traces may be part of the object's original production rather than damage.

Normal use and ageing

Evidence of a lived surface

Rubbed high points, softened edges, fine scratches, patination, ingrained dirt, handling sheen and tarnish may record ordinary use, storage and ageing.

Damage and deterioration

Loss, disruption and change

Abrasion, cracks, lifting, flaking, staining, mould, corrosion, bloom, adhesive residues and chemical change may reduce condition or indicate continuing risk.

Intervention

What has been done to the object

Cleaning, polishing, repainting, filling, revarnishing, replating and structural repair may leave differences in texture, colour, gloss, level or residue.

Possible alteration

Evidence requiring wider enquiry

Artificial wear, erased marks, distressed finishes, concealed repairs and newly applied ageing materials may be relevant to authenticity, but surface photography alone rarely proves intent or date.

A photograph records appearance. It does not automatically establish cause, age, authenticity, activity, treatment history or commercial significance. Those conclusions require comparison and supporting evidence.

Grade differences live on the surface

Printing patterns, mould texture, plating, brushwork and tool marks may distinguish an original finish, production method, variant or reproduction.

Surface evidence can support a wider attribution or expose contradictions, such as heavy applied patina over sharp, unworn manufacture details.

Untouched is not the same as improved

Buyers may distinguish sharply between untouched, cleaned, polished, retouched and restored surfaces. A visually brighter object can be less desirable.

Scratches, scuffs and abrasion

Evidence

Linear incisions, cloudy disturbance, flattened texture, exposed substrate, colour thinning and worn high points.

Possible meaning

Shows contact damage, repeated friction or loss of the surface layer, but not necessarily when the damage occurred.

Collector risk

One light direction may hide an entire family of scratches aligned parallel to the source.

Deposits, stains and residues

Evidence

Dust, soot, adhesive, polish residue, salts, mould, tide lines, wax, grease, corrosion products and embedded dirt.

Possible meaning

May be loose material, absorbed staining, material emerging from beneath the surface or evidence of treatment.

Cleaning before photography can destroy diagnostic, historic, forensic or insurance-relevant evidence.

Cracks, lifting and coating failure

Evidence

Fine crack networks, cleavage, flaking, raised edges, wrinkling, bloom, blanching and under-film corrosion.

Possible meaning

Can indicate instability in the substrate, paint, varnish, glaze, laminate or other applied layer.

Collector risk

A photograph may record the feature but cannot determine stability without repeat observation or specialist examination.

Repair and retouching

Evidence

Texture mismatch, fill edges, overspray, sanding, colour mismatch, gloss mismatch and paint crossing losses or cracks.

Possible meaning

May indicate restoration, refinishing, repainting or a concealed structural intervention.

Collector risk

A convincing diffuse image can hide level and sheen differences that become obvious in raking or specular light.

Lighting logic

No single lighting setup tells the whole truth

Different lighting geometries disclose different evidence. A serious condition record uses complementary views rather than searching for one universally flattering photograph.

Shadow and reflection may be the evidence

Shadows can communicate height, depth, lifting and direction. Reflections can show gloss change, polish, coating disturbance and scuffing. Editing either away may erase the condition information the image was intended to preserve.

The card that looked excellent

A glossy trading card appears clean in a softly lit front photograph. The colour is strong, the corners are visible and the seller's image looks convincing. Under a broad reflected light source, however, a field of fine scuffs, two shallow dimples and a matte cleaning patch become visible. A second raking direction reveals an impression that the first directional image missed.

The original photograph was not necessarily false. It answered an identification question, not a surface-condition question. The failure lay in treating one lighting mode as complete evidence.

When surface quality affects grade or price, request or make a reflection sweep, opposing raking views and a location-linked detail rather than asking only for “a clearer photo.”

Common ways surface photographs mislead

Myth

Soft light is always more truthful

Soft frontal light can conceal scratches, dents, lifting and gloss variation. It may be truthful as an overall view but incomplete as condition evidence.

Reality

Harsh evidence still needs context

Raking light can exaggerate microscopic texture. Pair it with a normal view, scale and statement of visibility under ordinary inspection.

Myth

Glare is a photographic mistake

Uncontrolled glare is distracting, but controlled reflection may be the only reliable way to reveal polish, scuffs, fingerprints or coating disruption.

Reality

A cleaner image may be a weaker record

Cross-polarisation, smoothing and reflection removal can make the object easier to see while hiding the surface behaviour a collector needs to assess.

1 · Record before acting

Photograph the object in context, add the lighting view that reveals the feature, record date and location, and retain the original capture.

Check for dust, reflections, sleeve marks, JPEG artefacts, known manufacturing texture and comparable examples before describing damage or intervention.

3 · Increase the evidence standard

Add opposing raking light, controlled reflection, a scale, RAW capture, colour reference or repeatable setup where value, authenticity or change is important.

4 · Stop handling and escalate

Do not wipe, brush, flatten or reposition unstable material. Seek specialist advice where the surface is actively deteriorating, disputed or at risk from the photography process itself.

The correct standard depends on the object, the decision being made and the cost of being wrong.

A difference between two images is not necessarily a difference in the object. Lighting, exposure, white balance, angle and processing can all imitate change.
