Repair and restoration photography should create evidence of what is original, what has changed, where intervention has occurred and how confidently that conclusion can be made. Its purpose is not to make a collectible look improved or damaged. It is to leave a record that a later owner, conservator, grader, insurer, valuer or researcher can locate, compare and question.
A strong record separates physical appearance from treatment history. Photographs may show a join, fill, overpaint, replacement component or disturbed surface, but they do not automatically prove who carried out the work, when it happened, what materials were used, whether the treatment is reversible or how the market should value it. Those conclusions belong to a wider condition and documentation record.
Core collector question
Can another person understand exactly where the intervention is, what the photograph actually proves and what remains uncertain?
If the answer depends on memory, a flattering final image or an unsupported caption, the photographic record is incomplete.
Foundation
Repair, restoration and conservation are not identical
Repair
Intervention intended primarily to restore function, structural integrity or basic usability: reattachment, mending, reinforcement, replacement fasteners, sewing, soldering or patching.
Restoration
Intervention intended to recover an earlier appearance, completeness or interpretation: filling, repainting, retouching, reconstruction, replacement decoration or removal of later additions.
Conservation treatment
Intervention directed primarily toward preservation, stabilisation and risk reduction. It may include repair or selective visual reintegration without aiming to make the object appear new.
Why the distinction matters to collectors
A stabilised original object, a sympathetically repaired object and a heavily reconstructed object can appear similar in a small sale photograph while carrying very different historical, grading, conservation and market implications.
Photography should reveal the intervention without pretending to decide its acceptability. That judgement may depend on category, rarity, function, age, cultural context, extent of original material and the expectations of a particular market.

Three evidential states
Before choosing a caption, decide which evidential state the record actually supports. This prevents visual anomalies from hardening into false treatment histories.
Confirmed intervention
Evidence
The treatment is supported by a conservator's report, invoice, workshop record, during-treatment photographs, reliable correspondence or direct observation.
Meaning
The record may identify the intervention as known, while still distinguishing documented facts from later interpretation.

Visible evidence consistent with intervention

The photograph shows features such as a join, colour discontinuity, fill, residue, changed gloss, replacement component or disturbed surface.

The appearance supports a repair or restoration interpretation, but the treatment history is incomplete or absent.

Describe what is visible. Do not invent a date, practitioner, material or level of professionalism from appearance alone.
Suspected intervention
Evidence
An anomaly is present, but original manufacture, ageing, damage, prior use and later treatment remain plausible alternatives.
Meaning
The image is a prompt for further examination rather than a finished conclusion.
Collector risk
Suspicion becomes misinformation when captions quietly convert 'possible' into 'restored'.
Collector scenario: the apparently perfect corner
A boxed collectible arrives with one corner that looks cleaner and sharper than the other three. Under normal frontal light it appears merely well preserved. A medium orientation view shows the location; raking light reveals a shallow perimeter and flattened print texture; the box interior shows a paper reinforcement; the seller has no treatment record.
The defensible record is not “professionally restored corner”. It is: “Lower-right corner with smoother surface, altered print texture and internal reinforcement consistent with localised reconstruction; treatment date, materials and practitioner unknown.”
Method
The essential photographic sequence
The sequence should narrow progressively without losing context. Each image answers a different question; no single close-up can replace the chain.

Establish the whole object
Begin with complete views from every relevant side. Include identifying marks, edition features, serial numbers, labels and the object's ordinary assembled state.

Locate the area
Move to a medium-distance orientation view showing the repaired or suspected region within its surrounding component. A detail without location is weak evidence.

Describe the visible boundary
Make close perpendicular and oblique photographs of joins, adhesive, fill, overpaint, replaced material, stitching, fasteners, altered texture and edge transitions.

Change the light
Use diffuse, oblique and raking light before manipulating the object. Add transmitted light for thin materials and specialist imaging only when justified and safely controlled.

Show the reverse or concealed side
Where access is safe, photograph undersides, interiors, reverse faces, inner hinges, backs of boxes and other areas where the intervention may be more extensive than the front suggests.

Repeat through change
When treatment occurs, repeat matched views before, during and after intervention. Record irreversible and soon-to-be-concealed stages before proceeding.
Weak record
A floating detail
The repair is shown closely but cannot be located on the object. Scale, orientation, reverse-side extent and ordinary appearance are missing.
Strong record
A locatable chain
Whole object, component, affected region and close detail are linked, then repeated under diagnostic light and from the reverse where safe.

What intervention can look like
Most signs are not unique to restoration. Their value comes from pattern, location, comparison and the way several observations reinforce or contradict one another.
Joins, fractures and adhesive
Fine linear boundaries, stepped alignment or gaps
Glue squeeze-out, glossy residue, yellowing or tide lines
Interrupted printing, grain, mould seams or reflection
Dust attached to tacky material or staining around a join
How to photograph it
Use close perpendicular views for the boundary, oblique light for surface height and raking light from more than one direction.
A photograph may show residue but rarely identifies exact adhesive chemistry.
Fills, infills and reconstructed losses
Different texture, porosity, colour or reflectivity
Flattened relief, missing tooling or unnaturally sharp edges

How to photograph it
Pair normal viewing with raking light. Use transmitted light for paper, thin card, fabric and translucent material.
Overpaint, recolouring and retouching

How to photograph it
Record frontal colour, low-angle surface character and, where appropriate, labelled cross-polarised or ultraviolet technical views.

How to photograph it

An old repair can be historically meaningful even when technically poor.

Use consistent reflections, untreated comparison areas and lighting that reveals rather than suppresses surface character.
Lighting
Reveal the evidence without manufacturing it
Diffuse frontal light
Useful for: Overall colour, general appearance, broad treatment boundaries and standard documentation.
Limitation: Can flatten texture and hide fills, dents, ridges and shallow distortion.
Limitation: A feature parallel to the light may disappear; repeat from more than one direction.
Transmitted light
Useful for: Paper infills, tissue repairs, backing, tape, thickness change, hidden cracks and interrupted watermarks.
Limitation: Use only when heat, support and handling risks are controlled.
Cross-polarised or ultraviolet views
Useful for: Reducing glare or locating differences in coatings, adhesives, retouching and fluorescence.
Limitation: Label as technical views. They are not ordinary appearance and are not chemical identification.
Action hierarchy: change the light before changing the object
Improve diffuse illumination and control reflections.
Change camera angle and light direction.
Use a contrasting background or transmitted light where appropriate.
Photograph safely accessible reverse or interior surfaces.
Stop before flexing, dismantling, cleaning or removing a component merely to obtain evidence.
Material judgement
The same sign means different things on different objects
Paper, books and printed packaging
Photograph front and reverse, inner hinges, sewing, page edges, box interiors and reconstructed flaps.
Use transmitted light for tissue, infill paper, backing, tape, thickness change and interrupted watermarks.
Record facsimile jackets, replacement pages, rebacking, recoloured cloth, added margins and resealed packaging explicitly.
Ceramic, glass and stone
Look for fracture lines, fills, pins, staples, ground edges, replaced fragments and differences in translucency or crazing.
Photograph transparent objects against both light and dark backgrounds where safe.
Use raking light to reveal filled losses and polished or sanded transitions.
Metal, coins and medals
Record solder, brazing, welds, plugged holes, replacement rivets, ground joins and heat discolouration.
Show altered lustre, polishing, tooling, artificial toning and interrupted corrosion under controlled reflections.
Seek category expertise before converting lighting effects into numismatic or metallurgical conclusions.
Plastic, rubber, toys and figures
Look for stress whitening, solvent damage, glue gloss, recast parts, 3D-print lines, repainting and mismatched yellowing.
Compare paint texture and wear across adjacent components, joints and accessories.
Do not flex aged material merely to make a suspected repair visible.
Textiles, leather and composite objects
Record stitch pattern, new needle holes, backing fabric, patch tension, replacement trim and altered hems.
Use close side lighting to separate original fibres from later thread or support.
Treat mixed-material objects as several photographic problems rather than one lighting setup.
Boundary with other domains
Photography documents intervention; it does not grade, authenticate or value it
A repaired area may affect grading, authenticity assessment, desirability, insurance, future conservation cost and sale disclosure. Those are connected decisions, not photographic facts.
Keep the image record observational, then link it to grading criteria, authentication findings, treatment documentation, provenance and valuation commentary rather than forcing all conclusions into the caption.
Chronology
Before, during and after treatment
Before
Record all surfaces, fragments, dirt, earlier repairs, inscriptions, internal construction, areas likely to be covered and evidence that cleaning may remove.
During
Photograph dismantling, concealed construction, removed parts, tests, old fills, fracture surfaces, supports, untreated infills and boundaries before they disappear.
After
Show the complete treated object, every treated area, remaining damage, visible repairs, replacement parts, treatment limitations and ordinary appearance.
Matched comparison controls
Keep camera position, focal length, object orientation, scale in frame, background, light direction, exposure, white balance, focus plane, crop and processing as consistent as practical. A tripod, copy stand, marked support position or saved lighting diagram turns later repetition from guesswork into method.
Do not use flattering light only after treatment, stronger sharpening, greater saturation or selective cropping to manufacture improvement.

Photography records where and how things looked. The written report explains what was done, with what, by whom and why.
File integrity
Preserve the evidence chain
Keep original camera files, high-quality derivatives, viewing copies, annotated copies, captions, metadata, diagrams, treatment reports, invoices and correspondence. Annotations should sit beside clean masters, never replace them.
Exposure, white balance, lens correction, modest sharpening, straightening and consistent cropping can support accurate documentation. Labelled arrows or diagrams belong on duplicate files.
Do not remove cracks, adhesive, stains, fills, fluorescence, replacement boundaries or missing texture. Documentary processing may clarify the record; it must not improve the object.
Myth versus reality
What photography can and cannot prove
Myth
A clear close-up proves the repair history.
Reality
It proves appearance under particular conditions. Date, practitioner, chemistry, reversibility and hidden structure usually require records or examination.
Myth
If the repair is invisible in normal light, it is insignificant.
Reality
A visually discreet intervention may still be extensive, structurally embedded or highly important to grading and value.
