A photograph does not simply record a collectible's surface. It records how that surface responded to a particular arrangement of light, camera, angle, exposure, focus and processing. A scratch can be obvious under one direction and invisible under another; a shallow dent can disappear in flat light; glare can hide damage; and a reflection can be mistaken for a defect that is not there.
For grading, lighting is therefore part of the evidence chain. The strongest photographic record does not merely make an object look attractive. It changes the illumination in controlled ways so that colour, reflection, texture, relief and surface continuity can each be judged with their own limitations visible.
Core collector principle
Surface evidence is strongest when the image set shows how appearance changes under controlled variations of light, not merely how good the object looks in one fixed photograph.
The object has not changed. The evidence has.
Imagine a glossy card photographed straight-on inside a light tent. The artwork is clear, the colour is balanced and the surface appears almost untouched. A second image lowers the light and tilts the card. Fine scratches appear, a small indentation interrupts the reflection and one patch of gloss no longer behaves like the surrounding coating.
Neither view should be treated as the whole truth. The first establishes normal presentation. The second interrogates surface survival. Good grading judgement comes from understanding what each lighting condition can show, what it can hide and how much weight the resulting defect should carry in ordinary viewing.
What counts as surface evidence
Surface evidence includes scratches, hairlines, scuffs, rub, dents, pressure marks, staining, spotting, loss of gloss, disturbed sheen, fingerprints, residue, crazing, corrosion, coating failure, flaking, texture change, print defects, polishing, cleaning, retouching, recolouring, delamination, rippling and wear on raised or exposed high points.
These features do not all reveal themselves in the same way. Some are chiefly differences of colour. Others are interruptions of reflection, minute shadows, changes in texture or breaks in a travelling lustre band. No single lighting method can answer every surface question.
Lighting methods and the questions they answer
Orientation
Broad diffuse light
A large, softened light source gives a calm overall view. It is usually the best starting point for colour, broad staining, artwork, labels, general finish continuity and normal presentation.
Its weakness is flattening. Fine scratches, shallow dents, slight rippling, cleaning hairlines, rub and small changes in gloss may disappear because the light produces little directional shadow or travelling reflection.
Surface relief
Directional and side light
Light from one side gives scratches, chipped edges, creases, raised fibres, high-point wear and moulded detail a visible light-and-shadow structure. Moving the light from left to right matters because a defect aligned with one direction may vanish in the other.
Hard light can also overstate severity. Dust, a faint hairline or a slab scratch may look dramatic when it catches the light directly, so the diagnostic view should be paired with a neutral overall view.
Topography
Raking light
Raking light strikes at a very low angle. It is one of the strongest ways to reveal non-colour-breaking creases, shallow dents, moisture rippling, pressed areas, indentations, edge lifting, blistering, laminate separation and repaired cracks.
It also strengthens ordinary manufacturing texture. Paper grain, brush marks, casting lines, mould flow and factory embossing can appear more defective than they do in normal viewing. The lighting method therefore needs to be identified and interpreted, not merely admired.
Gloss mapping
Controlled reflected light
On glossy, metallic, foil, lacquered, glazed, laminated or polished surfaces, a moving band of reflection acts as a map of continuity. A smooth reflection suggests an even surface; a broken, distorted or dead reflection may reveal scratches, fingerprints, scuffing, residue, coating wear, pressure marks, polishing or retouching.
Avoiding every reflection can remove the very evidence needed to judge originality and finish. The aim is controlled reflection that travels across the object, not a fixed glare patch that erases it.
Thickness and hidden breaks
Transmitted or back light
Light placed behind a translucent or thin object can reveal pinholes, thinning, tears, filled losses, backing, inserted sections, delamination, water damage and uneven density. It is especially useful for stamps, paper ephemera, documents, posters, textiles and some translucent plastics.
It is a specialist evidential view, not a truthful colour view. Harmless paper-density variation can appear severe, and normal reflected-light images are still required.
Targeted examination
Polarised and specialist light
Cross-polarisation can suppress glare from many non-metallic surfaces and reveal colour, staining, retouching or printed detail beneath varnish, plastic or laminate. Ultraviolet or infrared methods may reveal fluorescence differences, coatings, adhesives, retouching or obscured marks.
These methods can also remove useful gloss evidence or invite false certainty. A fluorescence difference is not, by itself, proof of restoration, forgery or replacement. Specialist imaging needs known comparisons, recorded technique and cautious interpretation.
Rotation turns a still image into a surface test
Some characteristics are dynamic. Coin lustre, holographic foil, metallic ink, pearlescent coatings, shallow indentations, cleaning hairlines and iridescence may only become intelligible while the object, camera or light moves. A single frame freezes one moment in that response.
The fixed-mark test
Move the light or tilt the object while watching the suspicious area. A genuine surface feature normally remains attached to the same physical location while its brightness or shadow changes. A reflected object may move, stretch or disappear. A printed colour feature tends to remain fixed and comparatively stable.
This simple test can help separate a real scratch from a reflection, a slab mark from an item mark, a pressure dent from printed shading, and original lustre from polished brightness.

Observable evidence
A bright line appears in one photograph, then moves or disappears when the angle changes.
What it may mean
The line is likely to be a reflection rather than a mark fixed to the object.
Collector risk
Treating it as a scratch may unfairly downgrade the item. Ask for another angle before deciding.
Observable evidence
A dull or broken patch remains attached to the same area while a reflected highlight moves across it.
What it may mean
The surface may have disturbed gloss, residue, scuffing, pressure damage, polishing or a different coating.
Collector risk
The photograph supports a surface inconsistency, but it does not yet prove its cause. Do not jump directly to cleaning or restoration.
Observable evidence
Every image has glare across the same corner, foil panel or central field.
What it may mean
That area has not been meaningfully documented.
Collector risk
A concealed area is an evidence gap, not evidence of good condition. Reduce remote-grade confidence or request new views.
Observable evidence
A shallow crease appears only under low-angle light and does not break colour in the neutral view.
What it may mean
The deformation is real but its ordinary visibility may be limited.
Collector risk
Do not ignore it, but do not weigh the harsh diagnostic image as though it were the normal appearance. Record both presence and visibility.
Observable evidence
A mark crosses the collectible in a straight path that does not follow its contours and appears to float above the design.
What it may mean
The mark may be on a slab, sleeve, protective film, scanner bed or another optical layer.
Collector risk
Photographs through holders do not automatically prove direct damage to the collectible. Establish the plane of the mark with angle changes.
Observable evidence
Colour differs between photographs taken under visibly warm, cool or inconsistent lighting.
What it may mean
Some apparent toning, fading or discolouration may come from white balance or lamp spectrum rather than the object.
Collector risk
Do not make fine colour-grade distinctions without a credible neutral reference or consistent comparison set.
A concealed area is an evidential gap
Glare becomes a grading problem when it saturates an area or prevents texture from being assessed. Reflective objects are genuinely difficult to photograph, so a single glare patch is not evidence of dishonesty. But when the same vulnerable area is obscured in every image, the surface has not been documented.
The same applies to deep shadow, cropped edges, black backgrounds that swallow dark damage, white backgrounds that hide edge whitening, and soft focus over the area carrying the grade claim. The correct conclusion is not that the surface is clean. It is that the supplied evidence cannot establish its condition.
Camera and processing can alter the apparent condition
Exposure
Overexposure can erase pale scratches, edge whitening, paper texture, gloss loss and detail inside reflective highlights.
Underexposure can hide dark stains, black-on-black scratches, corrosion and detail within recesses.
A clipped white highlight or crushed black shadow contains no recoverable surface evidence.
Contrast and sharpening
Local contrast can deepen stains, harden edges and exaggerate texture.
Sharpening can create bright borders along scratches, emphasise dust and make edges appear crisper than they are.
Noise reduction can remove fine hairlines, subtle spotting and the unevenness that distinguishes an original surface from a smoothed one.
HDR, stacking and compositing
HDR can flatten reflections, create halos and produce surface contrast that was never visible in a single exposure.
Focus stacking can introduce duplicated, missing or false boundaries around raised detail.
Composite or stacked grading images should be identified, with original component images retained where possible.
Resolution and compression
Low resolution can merge spotting, smear hairlines and remove the evidence separating adjacent high grades.
JPEG compression and social-media resizing may create halos or block patterns that mimic or conceal defects.
A thumbnail can identify an object while remaining wholly inadequate for surface grading.
Focus and depth of field
Soft focus must never be interpreted as a smooth or defect-free surface.
A camera may focus on slab glare while leaving the collectible beneath it soft.
For flat objects, the camera sensor should normally be parallel to the surface; three-dimensional objects need multiple focused views.
Magnification
Macro photography can reveal fibres, corrosion, cleaning traces, coating cracks and retouching.
Without scale and wider context, a trivial defect can occupy the whole screen and appear catastrophic.
Use an overall view, a locating close-up and a macro detail rather than presenting magnification alone.
How photographs overstate condition
Only soft frontal light is supplied for a surface-sensitive grade.
Exposure washes out pale damage or glare covers the same field repeatedly.
Noise reduction, low resolution or a sleeve softens fine defects.
Warm white balance flatters aged paper or selective angles omit the reverse and edges.
How photographs understate condition
Extremely hard light makes small marks appear deeper and more numerous.
Sharpening, high local contrast and macro views without scale magnify severity.
Dust, lint, slab scratches and reflections are attributed to the collectible.
Raking light is presented without a neutral view showing ordinary visibility.
Natural ageing is not a universal deduction
Lighting may reveal toning, patina, oxidation, paper darkening, fine crazing, surface bloom, gradual gloss reduction or material shrinkage. The grading question is not simply whether change exists. It is whether the change is expected for the material and age, stable or active, even or disruptive, natural or induced, and neutral, attractive or penalised within the relevant grading system.
Ask before interpreting age-related surface change
Is the change consistent with known material behaviour and manufacturing variation?
Does it obscure detail, weaken the object or interrupt the original finish?
Is it evenly distributed, localised around a cause, or associated with handling?
Does the category value originality, brightness, patina or eye appeal differently?
Would a specialist distinguish stable ageing from active deterioration?
Category-specific lighting priorities
Coins, medals and tokens
Rotate through the light to judge lustre, contact marks, hairlines, rub, cleaning and altered surfaces.
A static overhead image may show design detail while hiding disturbed lustre or abrasive wiping.
Separate natural tone and patina from applied substances, polishing and dead reflection zones.
Trading cards and foil surfaces
Use neutral front and back views, then angled light for original gloss, print lines, indentations, scratches and coating defects.
Foil, holographic and lenticular material often requires tilt sequences because surface response changes dynamically.
A sleeve or slab introduces extra reflections and may separate the visible mark from the card itself.
Comics, books and paper ephemera
Raking light is particularly valuable for non-colour-breaking creases, spine stress, rippling, indentations and laminate wear.
Diffuse light remains necessary for colour, foxing, staining, fading and overall presentation.
Backlighting can reveal thinning, repairs, tears and density changes, but should not be used to judge normal colour.
Toys, models and painted objects
Oblique and cross-lighting help separate paint rub, mould marks, stress whitening, cracks, repairs, repainting and adhesive residue.
Direct flash can flatten paint texture and make overpainting or blended repair harder to recognise.
Compare protected recesses and exposed high points where originality or wear is disputed.
Side or transmitted light can expose hairline cracks, chips and internal breaks in translucent material.
Normal inclusions, glaze texture and manufacturing irregularities must not be mistaken for damage without category knowledge.
Metal, lacquer and polished finishes
Move a controlled reflection across the surface to show polishing, pitting, corrosion, plating loss, dents and lacquer condition.
A single uncontrolled reflection can change apparent colour and hide broad areas.
Harsh point light may exaggerate individual marks while failing to represent ordinary visual severity.
Textiles and soft surfaces
Broad light records colour and staining; low-angle light records pile wear, thinning, abrasion, pulls and texture change.
Directional light can make weave and nap variation look dramatic, so normal viewing remains necessary.
Photographs cannot fully replace touch, flexibility assessment or fibre examination.
A practical home examination sequence

Establish the ordinary view
Begin with broad, neutral illumination and a square overall front-and-back record. This shows normal presentation, colour balance and the full edges before diagnostic light changes the appearance.

Ask a surface question
Name what you are trying to test: scratches, gloss continuity, cleaning, rippling, a pressure mark, fading, retouching or a mark that may be on a holder.

Change one lighting variable
Lower or move one light, tilt the object, or change the camera angle. Avoid changing everything at once, because you need to understand why the evidence appeared.

Test from the opposite direction
Repeat from the other side. Scratches, creases and relief aligned with the first direction may only become visible after the light is moved by roughly ninety degrees.

Move reflection across glossy areas
Use a travelling highlight to map gloss and finish continuity. Confirm whether the suspicious feature stays fixed to the object while its brightness changes.

Separate item, holder and artefact
Check whether the mark is on the collectible, sleeve, slab, protective film, scanner bed, sensor or background. Change angle or object position to establish the plane.

Add context before magnification
Show the whole object, then the location, then the macro detail. Include dimensions or scale where the enlarged defect could otherwise be overread.

Record the limitation
State what the photographs support, what remains obscured and whether the feature is visible only under specialised light. Do not convert an untested area into a positive condition claim.
Minimum photographic set for surface grading
Not every collectible needs every specialist view. The image set should expand in proportion to the object's value, reflectivity, material complexity, grade sensitivity and the seriousness of the claim being made.
Neutral overall front under broad, even light, with all edges visible.
Neutral overall back at comparable scale and exposure.
Left-oblique and right-oblique views to test marks aligned in different directions.
At least one raking-light view where dents, creases, rippling or relief matter.
Controlled-reflection views for glossy, metallic, foil, glazed, lacquered or laminated surfaces.
Separate edge and corner views where the category makes them grade-sensitive.
A locating view and a close-up for each material defect or disputed area.
Tilt, rotation or short video evidence for lustre, holographic, iridescent or colour-shifting finishes.

Evaluating somebody else's photographs
Before accepting a remote grade, test the record under four headings. These do not prove the grade, but they reveal whether the image set is capable of supporting it.
Coverage
Can every important surface, reverse, edge and corner be seen at least once without glare, crop or deep shadow?
Revelation
Has the photographer used lighting capable of showing the relevant defect type, rather than only producing an attractive overall image?
Consistency
Are front, back and comparison images captured under sufficiently similar colour, exposure and processing conditions for a fair judgement?
Traceability
Can each close-up be located on the overall object, and can marks be separated from holders, dust, reflections and image artefacts?
Evidential strength hierarchy
Strong surface evidence
Multiple angles and lighting conditions; full-resolution files; controlled colour and exposure; no repeatedly concealed areas; contextual and macro views; dynamic reflection where relevant; and written notes that identify limits and processing.
Moderate surface evidence
Clear front and back images with enough resolution for broad assessment, some angled views and mostly controlled glare, but incomplete diagnostic coverage or uncertain colour consistency.
Weak surface evidence
One attractive image, no reverse or edges, soft focus, low resolution, unknown processing, fixed glare, deep shadow or lighting incapable of testing the grade-relevant surface claim.
Misleading surface evidence
Materially altered images, cloned-out defects, false colour, selective compositing, deliberate concealment or photographs that do not depict the item being offered.
What photographs can and cannot establish
Photographs can strongly support
Visible scratches, scuffs, staining, surface loss and gloss disturbance.

Never infer a clean surface from a glare-covered surface.
Never rely on one lighting angle for reflective or textured material.
Use diffuse light for orientation and directional light for diagnosis.
Move the light or object to test whether a mark is real and where it sits.
Photograph gloss and reflection behaviour, not merely colour.
Pair macro detail with scale, location and an ordinary overall view.

Final grading principle
The most trustworthy photographic record is not necessarily the most beautiful one. It is the one that makes the surface meaningfully assessable.
It reveals rather than conceals, separates colour from reflection and texture from glare, shows defects in context, tests the surface from more than one direction and makes its own limits visible.
