Condition-revealing images are photographs made to expose the physical features that influence a collectible's condition assessment. They are not simply attractive catalogue pictures, proof that the object exists, or a substitute for a written grade. Their purpose is to help a viewer see wear, damage, alteration, surface quality, structural weakness, completeness, ageing and uncertainty as deliberately as a careful in-person examination allows.
The central discipline is simple but demanding: a photograph is evidence of observable condition, not condition itself. A shallow light angle makes texture and relief visible. Photographing the same area with light from opposing directions can help separate a physical depression from a printed shadow, raised residue from flat staining, and true deformation from uneven colour. A three-dimensional feature should change predictably as the light direction changes.
Direct reflection
Gloss, lustre and fine abrasion
Controlled reflection can reveal coating changes, hairlines, fingerprints, polishing and interruptions in gloss or lustre. It must be varied carefully because uncontrolled glare can both hide and exaggerate defects.
