Vulnerability
Corners strike, spines flex, handles carry weight, edges rub and attachment points concentrate force. These areas often deteriorate first and reveal handling or storage history most clearly.
A condition-sensitive area is a part of a collectible where a relatively small defect can have a disproportionately large effect on grade, eye appeal, structural stability, originality, completeness, deterioration risk or market acceptance. The decisive area may be a corner, staple, seal, hinge, high point, registration margin, label or attachment point rather than the object’s largest or most attractive surface.
Reliable grading therefore treats condition as spatial. A defect is not judged only by what it is or how large it is, but by where it occurs, what that location does, how visible it is, what evidence it carries and whether it changes the object’s classification or grade ceiling.
Collector scenario
A listing shows a bright, clean front. The colours are strong and the main image appears attractive, but there is no view of the spine, underside, rim, back edge, interior, hinge, joint, seal or label. The visible face is reassuring, yet it may have little bearing on the object’s structural condition, unopened status or originality.
An experienced collector changes the question from “Does this look good?” to “Where does this issue normally fail, and have those places been shown?” That shift is the beginning of condition-sensitive grading.
Orientation
Condition sensitivity usually comes from several overlapping causes. A location may be vulnerable, visually dominant, structurally essential, evidentially important, unusually rare in pristine form or treated as decisive by established collector convention.
Mechanical

Visual
A defect on a face, portrait, title, polished field or central illustration may dominate eye appeal even when an identical defect elsewhere would be peripheral.
Structural
A small tear beside a staple or crack at a handle can threaten the object’s integrity. Physical size alone does not measure grading importance.
Diagnostic
Seals, edges, high points, glue lines, recesses and fasteners may reveal opening, circulation, cleaning, repair, trimming, polishing, repainting or reassembly.
Survival
Some features rarely remain intact: sharp package corners, full gloss, clean jackets, unbroken seals, delicate projections and undisturbed lustre can distinguish exceptional survivors.
Market
Certain locations become decisive because a collecting field treats them that way: card centring, comic spines, stamp perforations, record playing surfaces or figure facial paint.
A 5 mm scuff beneath a base, a 5 mm scratch across a portrait and a 5 mm tear beside a staple are not equivalent. One may be ordinary contact wear, one may dominate eye appeal, and one may threaten attachment. Defect dimensions describe extent; they do not determine meaning.
Recognition
These families are not a universal checklist. They are a way to map vulnerability, function and evidential value before applying the issue-specific standards of a particular collecting field.
They are thin, exposed and easily compressed, chipped, frayed, split, trimmed or recoloured. A single impact can affect the front, reverse, adjacent edges and internal layers at once.
Inspect the point, both adjoining edges, front and reverse. A corner that appears sharp face-on may still be compressed or rebuilt in profile.
Raised design elements receive friction first. On coins, medals, embossed print, figures, ceramics and models, loss here can reveal wear before broad surfaces change.
Separate post-production abrasion from weak strike, moulding softness, casting limitation or factory paint application before assigning wear.
Faces, portraits, titles, central fields, glossy panels and plain surfaces draw the eye and reveal disruption more readily than patterned or peripheral areas.
Judge visual consequence, not merely dimensions. A tiny chip on a figure’s eye may matter more than a larger chip beneath the base.
Staples, hinges, pegs, seams, handles, tabs, mounts and articulated joints hold the object together or transmit force. Local damage may be structurally disproportionate.
Describe both present stability and future vulnerability. An intact-looking hinge may still be internally split, brittle or previously reinforced.
These areas repeatedly bend, open or carry shelf load. They combine movement, visibility and structural responsibility.
Do not test flexibility aggressively. Observation should not create the damage that the inspection is intended to detect.
On unopened and packaged collectibles, these areas determine whether the object remains factory-closed, has been resealed or has lost confidence as an unopened example.
A broken or suspect seal may change the object’s classification rather than merely reduce its visual grade.
Recesses preserve original colour, finish and residues while also trapping dirt, corrosion, polish and moisture. Their contrast with exposed areas can be highly diagnostic.
Residue is evidence, not proof. Natural dirt accumulation and alteration can produce similar local patterns; interpret the whole object coherently.
Maker labels, serial numbers, signatures, edition statements, stamps and provenance labels carry evidential as well as cosmetic importance.
Damage here may affect attribution, authenticity, provenance and market confidence at the same time as condition.
These locations record shelf contact, mounting, use and previous fittings even when they are invisible in normal display.
Display condition is not whole-object condition. Restricted access should create explicit uncertainty, not assumed perfection.
Judgement
The same physical fault can produce a different grade consequence depending on whether it is focal, structural, peripheral, protected, hidden or evidential. Use the comparisons below as reasoning examples rather than universal rules.

Think of grading impact as the interaction of severity, location sensitivity, visibility, structural consequence and evidential significance. This is not a numerical formula. It is a discipline for preventing one-dimensional judgement.
Small in area, but beside a staple, capable of propagation and possibly associated with reinforcement. Potentially significant.
More obvious in isolation, but concealed in normal display and non-structural. Meaningful, though not necessarily grade-controlling.
Shallow, yet highly visible across an open reflective field and potentially evidence of cleaning. Severe despite minimal depth.
Grade consequence
Many objects are not graded by averaging every surface. One severe fault in a critical area can establish the highest plausible grade remaining, even when the rest of the object is attractive.
A card with clean surfaces and one crushed corner, a comic with one detached staple, a record with one repeating groove scratch or a package with one broken seal may be limited by that single location.
This does not mean every grade is mechanically determined by the worst mark. Overall eye appeal and category rules still matter, but a critical-area defect often sets a ceiling.
Some defects change the condition category: a trimmed edge, repaired joint, replaced label, missing page, resealed pack or broken factory closure is not merely “a little worse.” It may alter originality, completeness or unopened status.
The exact ceiling depends on the object and grading system. Record the classification consequence separately from general surface quality.
Category context
Broad families help orient the eye, but serious grading requires issue knowledge. One card series may chip along dark borders, one toy may be known for brittle thumbs and one coin design may wear first on a particular high point.
Before grading an unfamiliar issue, ask where it normally wears, which defects are nearly universal, what manufacturing quirks are accepted, which parts are frequently repaired or replaced and what surviving detail distinguishes an exceptional copy.
Rarity may affect desirability and value, but it should not erase defects from the condition description or convert known weakness into assumed mint state.
Boundary
Sensitive areas frequently carry more than grading information. Recognise the boundary so that the condition page does not make claims that belong to a different specialist process.
Seals, labels, serial numbers, fasteners, edges and construction details may raise authenticity questions. Grading can record inconsistency, but should not overstate attribution without authentication evidence.
Corners, tears, spines, joints, rims and paint boundaries are common intervention points. Record visible evidence and uncertainty; identifying treatment may require restoration expertise.
Brittle folds, active corrosion, weakened hinges and migrating adhesive create future risk. The grading observation should trigger safe handling and preservation decisions, not amateur intervention.
Missing inserts, replaced parts, disturbed labels and mismatched components may affect completeness or ownership history. These consequences should be documented separately from the headline condition grade.
Inspection
The order below is designed to prevent attractive presentation from distracting the grader before originality, structure and hidden risk have been considered.
Identify materials, layers, coatings, attachments, moving parts, seals, inserts, high points and weight-bearing features. You cannot map sensitive areas reliably without understanding how the object was made and used.
Name the places most likely to control grade before the attractive front face captures your attention.
Ask what is immediately distracting, whether presentation is even and whether one defect dominates. Ordinary viewing establishes eye appeal before magnification exaggerates minor detail.
Use diffuse light for colour and broad presentation, raking light for dents and texture, and controlled reflected light for gloss, lustre, haze and hairlines. Rotate the object rather than relying on one static view.
Face-on photographs flatten evidence. Profile and edge views reveal compression, warping, thickness change, delamination, touched-up colour and repaired cuts.
Observe hinges, staples, seams, joints, tabs, handles and bases. Do not flex brittle paper, operate a resistant mechanism, peel a seal or dismantle an object merely to achieve inspection completeness.
Compare left and right corners, opposing rims, matching limbs, repeated design details and exposed versus protected surfaces. Asymmetry can reveal wear, replacement, restoration or manufacturing variation.
Write “3 mm tear beside upper staple” before “structural cover-attachment weakness.” This preserves the evidence trail and makes later review possible.
Ask whether the defect reduces eye appeal, weakens integrity, reveals use, indicates alteration, affects completeness, increases progression risk or creates a grade ceiling.
Action hierarchy
Knowing that an area matters does not justify invasive testing. Inspection quality is not measured by how much of the object you can force open.

“Some wear and marks” cannot explain a grade. Strong documentation identifies the exact area, material, defect, extent, visibility, structural consequence and uncertainty.

Upper staple remains attached, but the surrounding cover paper shows a 4 mm stress tear extending horizontally from the rear staple leg.
Lower flap remains sealed, although the right end of the glue line has lifted approximately 6 mm; no secondary adhesive or fibre transfer observed.
Photography
For remote grading, missing views of known sensitive areas should reduce confidence. A polished front image cannot substitute for evidence of edges, corners, profile, underside, attachments, seals and grade-limiting defects.
Risk
Most errors arise from treating the object as an undifferentiated surface or from allowing the most attractive area to dictate the whole judgement.
Equal dimensions do not mean equal structural, visual or evidential consequence.
Backs, edges, interiors and bases often contain the strongest evidence of wear or intervention.
Several minor peripheral marks may matter less than one structural tear or altered seal.
A concealed crack at a load-bearing joint can be more serious than a visible scuff.
Weak strikes, rough cuts, mould seams and registration errors may be production-origin features.
Generic checklists miss known weak points, common replacements and distinguishing survivor features.
Scarcity changes desirability and value, not the factual description of defects.
A pinhole, short perforation, staple tear, edge trim or fine crack can be grade-defining.
Specialist threshold
Escalation is warranted when the area controls high value, authenticity, structural safety, restoration status or an irreversible decision.
Understand how seriousness, position, visibility and consequence combine to determine grading weight.
