Edges, Corners and High Points

Edges, corners and high points are the parts of a collectible most likely to reveal its true handling history. They project beyond protected surfaces, concentrate impact and friction, and often lose colour, finish, material or definition before the object's broad display areas appear obviously worn.

They are therefore diagnostic zones: small areas that can provide disproportionate evidence about manufacture, use, storage, accidents, intervention and structural survival. The grading question is not simply whether they are perfect. It is what happened, how extensive the change is, whether original material remains, and what the pattern says about the object as a whole.

Collector scenario

Two objects with the same display appeal can tell different condition stories

Two examples look equally strong from the front: complete artwork, clean colour and an attractive central surface. Under angled light, one retains crisp corners, continuous edge finish and untouched raised detail. The other has a compressed lower corner, white substrate along the rim and polished high points.

The second object has not suddenly become unattractive, but its vulnerable areas limit the grade because they reveal contact and deformation that the main face concealed. The collector's task is to read those areas as connected evidence, not dismiss them as peripheral blemishes.

Orientation

Three related zones, three different kinds of evidence

Edges, corners and high points often appear together in condition descriptions, but they should not be collapsed into the vague phrase 'some wear'. Each zone has a different physical role and reveals different risks.

Edges

Observable evidence
Rubbing, colour loss, exposed fibres or substrate, chipping, splitting, delamination, compression, cutting irregularity or a change in thickness.
Possible meaning
Edges reveal how a surface terminates and whether the object's layers, coating or structure remain intact. They are also where later trimming, recolouring and separation frequently become visible.
Collector risk
A visually small edge defect can become grade-controlling when it removes original material, exposes a vulnerable layer, changes dimensions or is actively separating.

Corners

Observable evidence
Softening, rounding, whitening, bending, crushing, fraying, splitting, missing material, diagonal creases or one corner that differs sharply from the others.
Possible meaning
Corners concentrate force. They may record years of shelving and handling, or a single drop, impact or compression event.
Collector risk
Do not average a severe corner defect away. One crushed, bent or reconstructed corner may cap the grade even when the other three remain strong.

High points

Observable evidence
Loss of gloss, lustre, paint, plating, texture or sculptural definition; polishing, flattening, colour change or exposure of a lower layer.
Possible meaning
Raised details make first contact and can reveal friction before broad surfaces show obvious wear. The relevant points depend on the design of the object.
Collector risk
High-point weakness can be confused with soft manufacture, selective cleaning or restoration. Cause must be investigated before grading meaning is assigned.

Physical explanation

Why vulnerable areas change first

A broad surface distributes ordinary contact. An unsupported boundary or projecting detail concentrates it. Edges expose cut fibres, board layers, unglazed ceramic body, bare metal beneath plating, paint boundaries, laminated films, folds or end grain. Once the protective surface is breached, the underlying material may be more porous, fragile or reactive.

Corners combine two or more exposed boundaries and receive shelving, stacking, insertion, drops and compression. High points meet hands, packaging, adjacent objects and display supports first. This is why a small pale corner, dull crest or chipped rim can carry more grading meaning than a larger mark in a protected field.

Vulnerability does not make every change severe. It makes these areas informative. A collector must still determine whether the evidence records gradual contact, a single event, material ageing, manufacture, repair or an attempt to improve appearance.

Recognition

Read the damage mechanism before judging the grade

Similar-looking defects can arise from different processes. Naming the mechanism improves both grading judgement and documentation.

Abrasion

Observable evidence
Linear edge rub, whitening, polished peaks, exposed base material, worn gilding, softened relief or repeated directional marks.
Possible meaning
Friction has removed or altered original surface material. Even wear often reflects repeated contact; irregular deep abrasion may reflect loose storage or an isolated scraping event.
Collector risk
Severity rises when abrasion exposes substrate, destroys imagery, changes texture substantially or affects a focal high point.

Impact and crushing

Observable evidence
A localized dent, crushed corner, rim chip, radiating crack, displaced material, compressed board or paint loss around deformation.
Possible meaning
Unlike gradual wear, impact displaces, fractures or crushes material. Older impact damage may later become rounded or dirt-toned through handling.
Collector risk
Check beyond the visible mark. Impact may extend into internal layers, page blocks, glaze, joints or adjacent cracks.

Bending and flexing

Observable evidence
Corner lift, bend line, curled tip, edge wave, local gloss change, fibre disruption or distortion visible only in profile or raking light.
Possible meaning
Thin material can deform before it tears. A bend that has been pressed flat may retain internal disruption and should not be treated as restored to original condition.
Collector risk
Repeated flexing can progress into splitting, delamination or material loss, especially beside stiff coatings, folds and laminated edges.

Chipping and material loss

Observable evidence
A detached portion of glaze, enamel, paint, plating, board, plastic, stone, varnish, wood or printed surface.
Possible meaning
A chip is not simply colour loss: original material has gone. Its significance depends on depth, location, visibility, stability and interruption of form or decoration.
Collector risk
A tiny focal rim or facial chip may matter more than a larger concealed base loss. Look for related cracks and evidence of filling or grinding.

Delamination and splitting

Observable evidence
Lifting layers, a hollow edge, cracking parallel to the boundary, exposed adhesive, card-stock separation, foil peel or veneer opening.
Possible meaning
The object's layered construction is separating rather than merely scuffing. This is often more consequential than superficial edge wear.
Collector risk
Loose or moving layers may be progressive. Do not press them back into place merely to test whether they fit.

Fraying and feathering

Observable evidence
Fuzzy fibres, torn projections, softened paper or textile edges, uneven board fibres or a boundary that no longer reads as a clean cut.
Possible meaning
Fibrous materials fail differently from metal, glass or ceramic. Fraying may reflect abrasion, repeated handling, moisture weakening or original cutting quality.
Collector risk
Compare with known factory edges before deciding that roughness is later wear. Genuine rough cuts and later abrasion carry different grading meanings.

Judgement

Sharpness is a bundle of conditions, not a compliment

An edge can look sharp while being altered, or look soft while remaining original. Support the word with observable dimensions.

Geometry

Does the edge or corner retain the intended angle, contour and silhouette?

Material integrity

Are fibres, layers, glaze, plating or structural material complete and firmly attached?

Surface integrity

Does original colour, print, paint, finish or lustre continue to the vulnerable point?

Dimensional integrity

Has compression, flattening, trimming, grinding or distortion changed the original profile?

Visual cleanliness

Is apparent softness actually grime, residue, staining or an applied colour touch?

A card corner may retain its angle but expose white fibres. A box corner may retain colour but be compressed. A ceramic rim may look continuous because a loss has been filled. A metal ridge may be geometrically intact but polished. Describe the surviving geometry, material and finish separately rather than reducing them to one adjective.

Critical distinction

Wear, weak manufacture and original variation

Do not penalise an object for detail it probably never possessed, and do not excuse later wear merely because production was also weak.

Evidence favouring manufacture

  • Comparable examples show the same weakness, rough cut or rounded profile.
  • Original texture, lustre or coating continues uninterrupted across the weak area.
  • Weakness occurs in a repeated, symmetrical or production-logical pattern.
  • There is no directional rubbing, substrate exposure or localized polish.
  • The feature is consistent with mould filling, die cutting, weak strike, hand finishing or another known process.

A manufacturing feature may still affect desirability or category-specific grade, but it should not be misdescribed as later damage.

Evidence favouring wear or damage

  • Texture, gloss or lustre changes only on exposed contact points.
  • The affected area is smoother, paler, polished or flattened relative to protected recesses.
  • There is exposed substrate, displaced material, a bend line, crack or fibre disruption.
  • Wear follows a plausible handling, shelving, insertion or display direction.
  • One corner, edge or high point differs anomalously from equivalent areas.

Manufacturing weakness and later wear can coexist. Do not use one as a blanket explanation for the other.

Pattern reading

Natural wear, isolated damage and the danger of averaging

Gradual, use-consistent wear often shows

  • Repeated change across logical contact points.
  • Rounded or smoothed rather than freshly fractured boundaries.
  • A distribution consistent with shelving, handling, insertion or display.
  • Related evidence elsewhere on the object.

Isolated or abnormal damage often shows

  • Localized, abrupt or strongly asymmetric deformation.
  • Crushing, cracking, displacement or depth unlike surrounding wear.
  • One corner or projection inconsistent with the object's general condition.
  • A clear incident pattern rather than cumulative contact.

Four tiny touches are not equivalent to one major bend

Counting affected corners is useful but insufficient. Four minute, evenly distributed touches may be less grade-limiting than one deeply bent corner with fibre disruption. Judge severity, concentration, structural effect, visibility and relationship to the rest of the object. The weakest major attribute may control the final grade.

Category context

The same words mean different things across collectible types

There is no universal contact map. Learn where each object type naturally projects, flexes, rests and receives handling.

Cards, comics and paper collectibles

Inspect

All corners; full edge runs; spine ends; folds; cover overhangs; page edges; printed borders; laminate or emulsion boundaries.

Interpret

Separate factory rough cut, deckle or hand trimming from later fraying, whitening, bends, colour-breaking creases, tears, splitting and deliberate trimming.

Grade risk

Dark borders make shallow loss visually prominent. A single bend, split or altered edge can outweigh otherwise excellent central presentation.

Books, manuals and boxed publications

Inspect

Board corners, headcaps, tailcaps, spine ridges, dust-jacket tips, fore-edges, page corners, slipcase openings and raised cover decoration.

Interpret

A bumped corner may involve compressed board, broken covering and page-block distortion, not merely cosmetic softness. Assess jacket and book separately.

Grade risk

Do not describe a visibly crushed structure as 'lightly bumped'. Unsupported jacket tips and projecting cover stock are especially vulnerable.

Coins, tokens and medals

Inspect

Design high points, rim continuity and the edge as a separate third side. Check reeds, lettering, seams, filing, mounting evidence and lustre breaks.

Interpret

Distinguish weak strike or shallow production from friction. High-point wear is design- and series-specific and may require tilting under controlled light.

Grade risk

Serious rim or edge alteration can change the grading outcome entirely, including a problem or details designation rather than a normal numerical grade.

Ceramics, glass and stone

Inspect

Rims, feet, handles, spouts, finials, relief decoration, plaque corners and base contact points.

Interpret

Separate true chips, frits, bruises and hairlines from kiln-support marks, unglazed contact points and production irregularity.

Grade risk

A small prominent rim chip may matter more than a larger concealed foot-ring loss. A radiating crack or ground-down profile raises structural and restoration concerns.

Toys, models, miniatures and packaging

Inspect

Noses, hands, boots, weapon tips, elbows, raised emblems, wheel arches, base corners, flap edges, window corners, hanger tabs and box seams.

Interpret

Paint rub usually follows projecting contact points and produces smoothed or polished boundaries. Factory paint error may be thin or misaligned without a friction pattern.

Grade risk

The object and its packaging require separate condition judgements. Pristine contents do not erase crushed or split original packaging.

Metal, enamel and decorative objects

Inspect

Raised lettering, enamel-cell boundaries, medal rims, bezels, plated ridges, handles, feet, moulding corners and carved projections.

Interpret

Bright high points with darker recesses may reflect honest handling or selective polishing. Look for plating loss, solder, filing, grinding and repaired enamel.

Grade risk

Wear in inaccessible places may be inconsistent with normal use and can indicate aggressive cleaning, restoration or artificial distressing.

Originality risk

When vulnerable areas look better than their history

Sharp edges and intact-looking corners are desirable, which makes these areas common targets for cosmetic improvement or reconstruction.

Recolouring

Observable evidence
Pigment in exposed fibres, bleeding, gloss mismatch, colour on adjacent surfaces, unusually dark tips or perfect colour over crushed geometry.
Possible meaning
Ink, marker, paint or dye may have been applied to disguise edge whitening or corner loss.
Collector risk
Colour improvement does not restore missing surface. It changes originality and must be disclosed.

Trimming or re-cutting

Observable evidence
Short dimensions, nonparallel boundaries, lost factory texture, altered border proportions, cut printing, one unusually smooth edge or mismatched corner profiles.
Possible meaning
Material may have been removed to eliminate wear or reshape the object.
Collector risk
Apparent sharpness can be evidence of alteration rather than preservation. Specialist measurement and comparison may be required.

Pressing, sanding or grinding

Observable evidence
Persistent bend lines, local gloss change, compressed fibres, flattened profiles, fresh matte texture, tool scratches or missing glaze and mould detail.
Possible meaning
A defect may have been flattened or reduced without restoring original material or internal structure.
Collector risk
A visually neater edge can conceal irreversible intervention and may be more consequential than the untreated defect.

Filling and reconstruction

Observable evidence
Texture mismatch, seam lines, colour or fluorescence difference, bubbles, adhesive, edge softness or a repair that reflects light differently.
Possible meaning
Lost material has been replaced or built up to recreate a corner, rim or projection.
Collector risk
A successful visual repair remains a repair. Grade, originality and value may depend on accurate disclosure and specialist identification.

Assessment method

A repeatable examination sequence

The sequence is designed to prevent display appeal, a single viewing angle or an assumed cause from controlling the judgement.

    Identify original dimensions, edge construction, corner profile, coating system, design high points and known manufacturing tolerances before diagnosing damage.

    Inspect face-on

    Assess symmetry, border interruption, missing material, colour loss, rim continuity and the defect's normal-view visual impact.

    Inspect in profile

    Look for compression, bends, edge waves, altered thickness, delamination, chips and projecting repairs that may be invisible from the front.

Grade impact

What turns a small defect into a grade-limiting one

Location and visibility

A chip under a base is not equivalent to one on a figure's face or a plate's rim. Perimeter defects can dominate where they define the object's silhouette.

Depth and material loss

Colour loss, fibre exposure, full-thickness splitting and missing material are different levels of physical consequence.

Contrast and visual prominence

White substrate beneath a black border can make shallow loss highly visible. Visual impact and physical depth should be recorded separately.

Extent and distribution

One isolated rub differs from continuous edge wear. Even wear may read as use-consistent; one anomalous defect may indicate a separate event.

Stability

Loose, lifting, cracking or corroding damage deserves greater concern than stable old wear of similar size.

Grade-limiting concentration

Condition is not always an average. The weakest major attribute may control the final grade when it materially changes structure, originality or eye appeal.

Rarity and age may explain why a defect is common or why an example remains desirable despite it. They do not make visible evidence disappear. It is valid to describe an object as exceptional for its issue while recording its actual wear, damage and uncertainty accurately.

Handling

Do not damage the evidence while examining it

Vulnerable areas are also the easiest places to damage during assessment. Do not lift paper by a corner, grip an object by projecting decoration, rest a ceramic on a damaged rim, force a card into a tight sleeve, drag a box across a shelf or open a binding beyond its natural range.

Support the object's mass; do not ask its weakest edge, corner or projection to carry it.

Documentation

Write what another collector can verify

A useful description identifies exact location, defect type, extent, severity, structural status and uncertainty about cause.

Strong descriptions

  • Top-right corner lightly compressed, with approximately 2 mm of white fibre exposure.
  • Continuous light edge rubbing along lower border; no splitting or delamination observed.
  • Small glaze chip to outer rim at 4 o'clock, approximately 3 x 2 mm; stable, with no visible radiating crack.
  • Raised paint on nose and both knuckles worn through to base metal.
  • One card edge appears unusually smooth and slightly short relative to the opposite edge; possible trimming requires specialist assessment.

Weak descriptions

  • Edges bad.
  • Some shelf wear.
  • Corners not mint.
  • Normal for age.
  • A few issues.

These phrases are subjective, non-comparable and often conceal the difference between cosmetic wear, structural damage and suspected alteration.

Minimum photographic record

  • Full front and full back.
  • All corners and complete edge runs or rim sectors.
  • Profile view where thickness, bending or compression matters.
  • Raking-light view for gloss, texture and shallow deformation.
  • Close-up of the most consequential defect.
  • Scale reference for significant chips, losses or splits.

Use consistent positions: upper-left, upper-right, lower-left and lower-right for rectangular items; clock-face positions for circular objects. Bright frontal images alone commonly conceal bends, polishing and shallow profile change.

Escalation

When a qualified specialist should take over

Stop at observation when clarification would require force, solvents, destructive testing, aggressive cleaning or material-specific intervention.

  • Trimming, re-cutting, filing, recolouring or reconstruction is suspected.
  • A crack, delamination, flaking surface or exposed material may be active or progressive.
  • Ceramic, glass, stone or brittle plastic damage could threaten safe handling.
  • High-point weakness could plausibly be manufacture, wear or selective cleaning and the distinction materially affects grade or value.
  • A rare or valuable object has repair in a focal or structurally important area.
  • The object is layered, chemically unstable, unusually fragile or unsuitable for routine handling tests.
  • Originality and restored condition cannot be separated confidently from non-destructive visual examination.

Working checklist

Before assigning a grade or condition description

Edges and corners

  • Are they complete, correctly shaped and dimensionally consistent?
  • Is colour or finish loss superficial, or is substrate exposed?
  • Is there rubbing, chipping, fraying, compression, splitting or delamination?
  • Does the texture fit the known manufacturing method?
  • Does one area differ suspiciously from its counterpart?
  • Is pressing, trimming, recolouring or reconstruction possible?

High points and overall judgement

  • Is original texture, gloss, paint, plating or lustre intact?
  • Could weak detail be manufacture rather than use?
  • Does the wear follow logical contact points and a coherent handling history?
  • Which defect is grade-limiting, and why?
  • Is any damage active, unstable or unsafe to handle?
  • What remains uncertain, and has that uncertainty been recorded?
