Textiles, Linings & Interleaving
Textiles used in storage are not inherently safe because they feel soft. A cloth, felt, lining or padded support can protect a collectible, but it can also abrade, stain, snag, trap moisture, release fibres, transfer dye, accelerate corrosion or conceal a failing foam and adhesive layer. The correct question is not merely whether a material is soft; it is what the material contains, what surface it will touch, what work it must perform and how the whole assembly will age.
For collectors, the strongest routine choices are usually simple and inspectable: washed undyed cotton, known stable polyester fabric, covered polyester batting, neutral-pH unbuffered tissue and a rigid archival base where structural support is needed. Decorative velvet, wool felt, foam-backed fabric, adhesive-backed liners and unknown household textiles demand much more caution. Original linings in historic fitted cases create a separate judgement because their material weakness may coexist with evidential, aesthetic and market significance.
Purpose before material
What textiles actually do in a storage system
A textile should be selected for a defined function. Using one soft material for every task often produces either inadequate support or unnecessary contact risk.
Contact
Surface protection
A clean, smooth layer can reduce rubbing, scuffing, shelf abrasion and contact with rough hardware. It must still be appropriate for the object surface and remain free from trapped grit.
Separation
Interleaving
A removable barrier can reduce direct abrasion, sticking, dye transfer, plasticiser migration, imprinting and contact between chemically incompatible components.
Load
Cushioning
Batting and padded linings can spread minor loads and absorb small shocks, but softness does not replace a rigid base or properly shaped structural support.
Shape
Void filling and support
Tissue-filled pads, textile rolls and covered forms can support shoulders, hats, hollow objects, leather goods and irregular memorabilia without forcing them into a distorted shape.
Movement
Handling support
A sling, covered tray or removable support allows the enclosure to be lifted instead of repeatedly handling a vulnerable collectible directly.
Environment
Dust covering
A loose, washable cover can reduce dust deposition while remaining easy to inspect and replace. It is not a cure for damp, pollution, pests or poor room conditions.
Material judgement
Choose the exact product, not merely the fibre name
Two fabrics sold under the same generic name can behave very differently because of weave, colour, finish, backing and manufacturing treatment.
Washed cotton muslin or sheeting

- Washable, replaceable and available in white or undyed forms

Collector judgement
Choose plain, undyed fabric; prewash without conditioner or fragrance; rinse thoroughly; dry completely; and keep clean until use. Washing reduces removable residues but does not make every cotton product conservation-safe.
Fine washed linen
Useful where strength mattersWhere it helps
- Strong, durable and relatively dimensionally stable
- Can provide a lower-lint support or cover
- Suitable for some load-bearing slings and mounts
What can go wrong
- Often coarser and more textured than cotton
- May impress or abrade delicate surfaces
- Commercial products may be blends or carry decorative finishes
Collector judgement
Use only fine, known-composition, washed linen where its strength adds value. Coarse furnishing linen, hessian and decorative burlap are poor direct-contact choices.
Known stable polyester fabric
Highly useful, but product identity mattersWhere it helps
- Absorbs less moisture than cotton and can be strong, smooth and low lint
- Available as woven, knitted, sheer and nonwoven forms
- Useful over padded forms and in reusable handling supports
What can go wrong
- May contain dyes, flame retardants, softeners, antistatic treatments or coatings

- Unknown recycled fibres or bonded products may introduce contaminants
Collector judgement
Polyester is a fibre family, not a guarantee. Prefer a known, uncoated, unbacked product with documented composition and use a different surface where static could disturb flakes, dust or lightweight fragments.
Polyester batting

- Creates padded hangers, rolls, forms, nests and broad supports
- Resilient and adaptable to irregular shapes
- Needle-punched products can release fewer fibres than loosely bonded fills
What can go wrong
- Exposed fibres can snag, shed and trap dust
- Padding compresses and changes shape over time
- A soft layer may still leave a heavy object resting on a damaging high point
Collector judgement
Place batting over a firm structural base and beneath a smooth washable cover. Support broad stable areas, leave safe finger access, and inspect for compression or contamination.
Felt
Variable and often overtrustedWhere it helps
- Can provide a resilient, non-fraying surface when composition is known
- Some conservation-tested polyester or acrylic felts may be appropriate
What can go wrong
- Pile traps grit, dust, fibres and metal particles
- Dyed, recycled, adhesive-backed or rubberised felts may transfer chemicals
- Wool content can contribute sulphur compounds near reactive metals
Collector judgement
Never treat a luxurious felt-lined box as automatically safe. Unknown craft felt, black decorative felt and wool felt should not normally remain in direct long-term contact with vulnerable surfaces.
Wool, silk, velvet and unknown decorative fabrics

- May be historically important when original to a fitted case or presentation box
What can go wrong
- Can attract pests, retain moisture, shed, transfer dye or become brittle
- Wool may accelerate tarnish of silver and corrosion of some metals
- Velvet pile and failing silk can abrade, snag or deposit fragments
Collector judgement
Do not introduce these as new direct-contact materials. Preserve original linings where their history matters, but reduce contact using a reversible barrier, independent tray or separate enclosure.
Hidden variables
Weave, pile, dye and finish can matter more than softness
Structure
Plain weaves are usually predictable. Twills can be strong but visibly textured. Knits conform well but may stretch and permit sagging. Velvet, velour and brushed cloth trap debris and catch projections. Nonwoven describes construction, not chemical stability.
Colour
Dye can migrate through rubbing, humidity, condensation, sustained pressure, oils or plasticisers. White and undyed materials reduce transfer risk and make dust, mould, pest debris and corrosion products easier to see.
Treatment
Flame retardants, stain repellents, antimicrobials, antistatic agents, softeners, crease-resistant resins, latex backing, polyurethane foam and pressure-sensitive adhesive can dominate the ageing behaviour of the finished product.
Barrier decisions
Interleaving separates surfaces; it does not repair the environment
Interleaving is a removable layer placed between two surfaces. Its value lies in controlled separation, easier inspection and reduced mechanical contact.
What interleaving can do
- Reduce abrasion, snagging, imprinting and sticking
- Separate incompatible materials or rough hardware
- Catch loose fragments and make deterioration visible
- Prevent decoration or fasteners pressing into adjacent layers
- Create a removable handling or inspection layer
- Distribute light pressure across folds or stacked surfaces
What it cannot do
- Neutralise severe off-gassing or active corrosion
- Make an acidic, damp or contaminated box safe
- Prevent crushing where structural support is absent
- Cure sticky plastic, failing rubber or crumbling foam
- Stop a pest infestation or mould outbreak
- Permanently isolate highly volatile degrading material
Choosing the interleaving layer
Unbuffered tissue
The safer general default for mixed collections and for silk, wool, leather, feathers, fur, sensitive dyes, photographs and unknown protein-based materials. It is smooth, low bulk and useful inside folds, but tears during repeated access.
Washed cloth
Useful for large reusable wraps, dust covers, handling slings and projections that might puncture tissue. It remains textured and absorbent, so it is not the right universal contact layer.
Polyester film
Smooth, transparent and low in moisture absorption, but capable of generating static, restricting air exchange, trapping condensation or adhering to tacky and degraded surfaces.
Building the enclosure
Linings, nests, wraps and supports should remain removable
Lining a shelf, drawer or box
A textile lining should cover rough edges without becoming a hidden microenvironment. Use a rigid archival board or other suitable base where shelf joints, hardware or an uneven surface could transmit pressure. Keep the textile loose-laid or mechanically retained, light coloured, smooth, replaceable and free from exposed fasteners.
Avoid gluing fabric directly into a drawer or original case. Adhesive adds volatile compounds, staining, local stiffness and replacement difficulty. Where attachment is essential, secure the fabric to a removable secondary board outside the object-contact zone.
Constructing a padded nest
A sound nest
- Begins with a firm, dimensionally stable base
- Uses stable padding beneath a smooth cover
- Supports broad, mechanically strong areas
- Leaves finger spaces, lifting tabs or a removable tray
- Makes the intended orientation obvious
- Can be opened, cleaned, inspected and replaced
A harmful nest
- Pushes against projections, handles or fragile decoration
- Grips the object so tightly that removal requires force
- Allows the object to rest on one high point
- Conceals corrosion, mould, sticky plastic or foam failure
- Uses exposed batting that catches fragments
- Compresses into an uneven shape without review
Wrapping and tying
Loose cloth can protect large wooden objects, framed works, robust ceramics, boxed games and irregular memorabilia from dust and shelf abrasion. Tight wrapping can imprint decoration, snag projections, trap fragments, restrict ventilation and hide deterioration. Avoid tying string, cord or tape directly around the object; secure the external support instead.
Object form
Flat, folded, rolled and hanging storage require different supports
Flat storage
Flat storage gives broad support and removes the need for a textile object to carry its own weight. Use shallow stacks, separate decorated surfaces, and provide an individual tray, folder, board or shallow box where retrieval would otherwise disturb neighbouring items.
Fold padding
A soft roll of unbuffered tissue or a cloth-covered support should transform a sharp crease into a broad curve. It must extend across the fold, contain no hard ends and resist collapsing into a narrow pressure line. Do not repeatedly refold a weak object merely to redistribute stress.
Rolled storage
Use a suitably large-diameter, supported tube with interleaving and an external cover. Do not roll stiff, brittle, flaking, heavily creased or structurally weak objects. Guard against telescoping, edge distortion, pressure from ties and abrasion during unrolling.
Padded hanging
Hang only structurally sound garments. The hanger should match shoulder width, have broad rounded support, stable polyester batting and a washed cotton cover. Weak, knitted, heavily decorated, bias-cut or failing garments normally belong flat, with heavy skirts and accessories independently supported.
Composite risk
Choose for the most vulnerable contact surface
A mixed collectible may include metal, leather, paper, paint, plastic, rubber, textile and photographic components. One universal soft lining rarely suits every interface.
Reactive metals
Medals, badges, coins and fittings
Avoid wool, rubberised fabric, unknown black felt, used polishing cloths, dyed leather and damp cotton. Sulphur, chloride, perspiration, dye, moisture and cleaning residue can create contact-pattern tarnish or corrosion. Use a proven inert barrier or dedicated conservation enclosure.
Soft polymers
Vinyl, rubber and tacky plastics
Plasticiser-rich or degrading polymers can stain fabric, absorb its weave, bond to fibres and retain lint permanently. Ordinary cloth is not a safe default for flexible PVC, old polyurethane, rubber grips or tacky dolls. Isolate severe deterioration and select a specialised non-adherent barrier.
Soft coatings
Paint, lacquer, wax and varnish
Even smooth cotton has a woven pattern. Sustained pressure can imprint soft paint, wax, lacquer, pressure-sensitive labels and plasticised finishes. Use very smooth tissue, a tested nonwoven or suitable inert film, and prevent pressure through a rigid support. Always lift rather than slide.
Paper and photographs
Ephemera, albums and image materials
Decorative fabric-covered boxes may conceal acidic board, foam and adhesive. Paper and photographs generally need storage materials specified for those media rather than household fabric. Avoid direct contact with decorative felt, velvet, wool, adhesive- backed cloth and unknown dyed textiles.
Originality and evidence
Original fitted cases require preservation judgement, not automatic relining
Evidence
Original silk, velvet, felt, flocking and shaped inserts can document manufacture, period presentation, completeness, ownership and intended arrangement.
Meaning
The case may be part of the collectible rather than disposable packaging. Altering it can erase historic relationships even when the original materials are chemically poor.
Collector risk
Stripping and relining may damage the case, reduce originality, alter fit and reduce market confidence. Leaving active harmful contact untreated can also cause loss.
Reversible response hierarchy
- 1. Document before interventionPhotograph the object in position, the lining, labels, fasteners, damage patterns and the original arrangement.
- 2. Reduce direct contactIntroduce a removable, known barrier only where it can be added without stressing the object or obscuring important evidence.
- 3. Add independent supportPlace the collectible on a removable inert tray or shaped support so that the historic case is retained but no longer carries the object directly.
- 4. Separate within a shared enclosureStore object and case together in a larger archival box when the original interior remains actively harmful or cannot support safe access.
- 5. Escalate irreversible workSeek a conservator before removing original lining, adhesive, padding or fitted structures from a valuable or historically significant case.
Diagnosis
Read contact-pattern damage as evidence
The location, outline and texture of damage often identify the responsible interface more reliably than a generic label such as ‘age-related deterioration’.
A woven pattern appears on paint, lacquer, vinyl or a polished coating
Likely meaning
Pressure and contact time have allowed the textile texture to imprint into a soft or plasticised surface.
Collector response
Stop direct contact. Lift rather than slide the object, reduce pressure and substitute a smoother non-adherent barrier supported by a rigid base.
Fibres remain attached after the object is lifted
Likely meaning
The surface may be tacky, static-charged or chemically degrading; the lining may also be shedding.
Collector response
Do not pull fibres away aggressively. Isolate the object, retain evidence of the contact pattern and seek specialist advice where the surface is soft or valuable.
Green, white, black or brown change follows the shape of the lining
Likely meaning
Moisture, sulphur, chloride, dye, adhesive or other contamination may be accelerating corrosion or staining at the contact interface.
Collector response
Separate the materials, retain the original lining if historically important, document the pattern and assess both the metal and the enclosure.
The liner smells musty, vinegary, chemical or strongly fragranced
Likely meaning
Moisture, mould, degrading foam, plasticiser, finish or cleaning residue may be present even before visible damage appears.

Remove the object from direct contact where safe, ventilate the enclosure appropriately and investigate hidden foam, adhesive, board and backing layers.
Powder, crumbs or sticky residue emerges through the fabric
Likely meaning
A concealed foam, adhesive or flocked layer is failing beneath an apparently intact textile surface.

Avoid pressing or vacuuming through the object. Support removal on a tray, contain loose material and consider specialist treatment for an original fitted case.
Insect casings, webbing, grazed fibres or debris appears in seams
Likely meaning
The cover, padding or original lining may be providing food, shelter or a concealed pest harbourage.
Collector response
Isolate the enclosure, inspect folds and adjacent objects, record the finding and follow the collection pest-response procedure rather than applying household insecticide.

Clean and inspect
- Remove the object before cleaning its liner or support
- Check seams, folds, hems, batting, hidden backing and the base beneath
- Wash reusable covers with fragrance-free detergent and rinse thoroughly
- Allow complete drying before returning material to storage
- Vacuum non-washable supports through a protective screen where appropriate
- Keep cleaning cloths separate from permanent storage textiles
Replace when
- Discoloured, brittle, torn, sticky or permanently creased
- Dusty beyond cleaning, musty, mould-affected or pest-damaged
