Paper, Card & Board
Paper, card and board can separate, wrap, support, cushion, mount and enclose almost every kind of collectible. Their familiarity makes them easy to trust, yet they vary from highly purified conservation papers to lignin-rich packaging board that yellows, becomes brittle and transfers degradation products into the object beside it.
The collector’s task is therefore not to find something merely labelled acid-free or archival. It is to choose a documented material, in buffered or unbuffered form as appropriate, then turn it into an enclosure whose surface, fit, rigidity, seams and handling method suit the particular object.
Central judgement
Good paper-based storage protects physically without becoming a new chemical or structural threat.
A preservation enclosure is not a permanent inert shell. It is a working, inspectable and replaceable layer that absorbs handling, limits abrasion, retains fragments and separates the collectible from less suitable surroundings.
What collectors should understand first
Chemistry
The word ‘paper’ says almost nothing about preservation quality
Fibre source, lignin, sizing, fillers, dyes, coatings, adhesives and alkaline reserve determine whether a sheet or board remains useful or becomes another source of acidity, staining and embrittlement.
Construction
A sound material can still become a damaging enclosure
Incorrect fit, sharp folds, exposed seams, unstable laminating adhesive, overfilled boxes and rough surfaces can damage an object even when the paper or board itself has a good specification.
Compatibility
Buffered is not automatically better than unbuffered
Buffered stock is often appropriate for ordinary acidic paper, but photographs, cyanotypes, blueprints, natural dyes and uncertain mixed media may require unbuffered or process-specific materials.
Stewardship
Enclosures are replaceable working components
Folders, boards, tissues and boxes absorb handling, pollution and acidity. Their condition should be inspected and replacement should be triggered by performance, not by a universal calendar date.
Paper, card and board form a continuum
Paper is a thin fibrous sheet; card is a commercial description for heavier stock; board is thicker and may be solid, laminated, corrugated, honeycombed or faced. These labels describe form more than quality. A thin conservation folder and a rigid archival box are judged by the same underlying questions: which fibres were used, what chemicals remain, how stable are the additives and how does the finished structure interact with the object?
Ordinary cardboard often contains mechanical wood pulp, recycled fibre, unstable sizing, inks and adhesives. High-quality preservation stock is commonly made from cotton rag or purified alpha-cellulose wood pulp and is specified for pH, lignin, alkaline reserve, strength and other relevant properties.
Why ordinary paper and cardboard deteriorate
Cellulose chain breakdown
Acid hydrolysis, oxidation, heat, moisture, light, pollutants and manufacturing residues shorten cellulose chains. The visible result is weaker, yellower, more brittle paper that tears or powders more easily.
Lignin oxidation
Lignin remaining in incompletely purified wood pulp contributes to yellowing, acidity and embrittlement. Newsprint, brown cardboard, greyboard and low-cost recycled packaging commonly present this risk.
Acid formation and migration
Acids can originate in pulp, sizing, adhesives, dyes, coatings, pollutants or neighbouring materials. A board can begin acidic or become acidic later, which is why a single pH claim does not establish long-term stability.
Moisture cycling
Paper absorbs and releases water vapour. Repeated expansion and contraction can warp lids, cockle sheets, weaken folds, split seams and alter pressure inside a tightly packed enclosure.
Marketing language versus useful evidence
‘Acid-free’
What it can do well
- May indicate that the material was neutral or alkaline when manufactured or tested.
- Can be one useful part of a fuller preservation specification.
What it cannot prove
- Does not establish lignin content, alkaline reserve or future stability.
- Does not assess dyes, coatings, adhesives, recycled contamination or photographic compatibility.
Collector use: Treat it as a starting question, never as the final purchasing decision.
‘Archival’, ‘museum quality’ or ‘conservation grade’
What it can do well
- Can help identify the supplier’s intended market.
- May accompany legitimate technical data from a specialist manufacturer.
What it cannot prove
- These are commercial descriptions without one universal controlling definition.
- A white exterior or branded label can conceal an acidic core or unstable adhesive system.
Collector use: Look past the adjective and request fibre, pH, lignin, buffer, adhesive and test information.
Recognised specifications and testing
What it can do well
- Standards for permanent paper assess measurable properties such as strength, pH, alkali reserve and oxidisable material.
- The Photographic Activity Test assesses potentially harmful interactions with photographic images and supports.
What it cannot prove
- A paper standard does not automatically certify every finished board, box or adhesive seam.
- PAT compliance does not prove ideal fit, handling design, humidity control or suitability for every photographic process.
Collector use: Use recognised tests as evidence within a complete object-specific assessment.
Myth versus reality
Myth
“A product is safe for every collectible because it is acid-free and sold by an archival supplier.”
Reality
Material chemistry, buffering, surface texture, adhesives, object sensitivity and enclosure design still have to match. Reputable supply reduces uncertainty; it does not remove collector judgement.
Buffered or unbuffered?
Buffered paper or board contains an alkaline reserve, commonly calcium carbonate. It can neutralise acids entering from the object or environment and delay acidification of the enclosure. That reserve is useful but finite; it can eventually be consumed.
Buffered stock is often appropriate for
- ordinary documents, books, pamphlets, posters and maps;
- newsprint, pulp ephemera and other inherently acidic papers;
- comic books, cardboard game components and printed packaging;
- stable prints and many modern printed papers.
Unbuffered or process-specific stock may be needed for
- cyanotypes, blueprints and some diazo or architectural processes;
- certain photographic processes, including some albumen and salted-paper materials;
- objects with sensitive natural dyes or proteinaceous components;
- mixed-media works whose chemistry has not been identified.
Specialist threshold
Stop using a generic paper rule when the image process, coating or mixed-media chemistry is uncertain.
Process identification should come before enclosure selection for unusual photographs, blue images, flaking or powdery media, tacky coatings and objects combining paper with degrading plastics, leather, metal corrosion or natural dyes. Use PAT-tested materials for photographic applications, then seek process-specific guidance where the object remains chemically ambiguous.
Common paper-based products and how to judge them
Folders and four-flap enclosures
Folders provide separation, support, safer handling and a place for identification. Four-flap designs are especially useful for brittle sheets, thin booklets and fragments because the object can be revealed without repeated sliding. Size matters: overhanging edges remain exposed, while a small item loose in a large folder can travel and strike the enclosure.
Envelopes and sleeves
Paper envelopes can suit robust small flat items, but seams, adhesive flaps, pressure ridges and repeated insertion make them less suitable for brittle or projecting material. Open-ended sleeves or four-flap designs often reduce abrasion and catching.
Interleaving and tissue
Interleaving can reduce abrasion, transfer and direct contact, but must be smooth, clean, chemically appropriate and thin enough not to distort a stack. Gift tissue, facial tissue, kitchen roll and coloured packing tissue may contain dyes, recycled fibre, fragrances, wet-strength agents or textured embossing and should not be treated as conservation materials.
Glassine
Glassine is smooth and translucent, but it can become brittle, wrinkle and adhere to glossy, tacky or degraded surfaces in damp conditions. Its historic use does not make every grade universally safe. Modern PAT-tested paper or stable plastics may be preferable depending on the object.
Mountboard and laminated board
A preservation board should be sound throughout its thickness. An acid-free facing over a poor core is not equivalent to cotton or purified-cellulose board with stable internal plies and adhesives. Brown bevels, delamination and discoloured edges are warning signs.
Corrugated board and boxes
Preservation-grade corrugated board can provide strong, lightweight boxes and oversize supports. Ordinary shipping cartons are designed for transport economy and may contain recycled fibre, lignin, contaminants, tape and staples. Use them as temporary outer transport layers, not as the primary long-term enclosure for valuable objects.
Tubes and rolled supports
Long-term tubes should be archival-quality, wider than ordinary mailing tubes and longer than the object. The roll should remain loose, wrapped and horizontally supported. Brittle, cracked, flaking, heavily folded or laminated material should not be rolled merely to save space.
Fit and physical design
Chemical quality is only half the judgement. An excellent board can still damage an object when it is too tight, too loose, too rough, too heavy or assembled with poorly placed seams. The useful target is not maximum enclosure; it is proportionate restraint and support.

Surface is part of fit
Direct-contact paper should normally be smooth and non-abrasive. Rough fibres can catch flaking ink, abrade glossy cards and snag damaged edges. Embossed tissue or corrugated textures can imprint a smooth surface under pressure.
Friable charcoal, pastel, graphite, flaking paint and powdery media may require a raised window, sink mat or contact-free box rather than any sheet placed directly on the surface. Clear polyester can aid viewing, but static may attract or lift loose particles.
Collector scenario: preserving an original game box
A 1970s role-playing game arrives in its original printed board box. The lid is slightly bowed, the insert is brown and brittle, the maps are folded beneath metal counters, and the owner is tempted to discard the insert and replace it with a pristine archival tray.
Evidence
The insert may be chemically poor, but it is original evidence of manufacture, arrangement and completeness.
Risk
Continued loading can crush maps and transfer corrosion or acidity, while disposal would permanently reduce historical integrity.
Collector response
Document the arrangement, retain the insert, isolate vulnerable components, add a reversible support tray and house the complete original box in a better secondary enclosure.
Original packaging is an artefact, not an archival enclosure
Toy boxes, record sleeves, game cartons, backing cards, comic mailers and promotional packaging may contain acidic board, unstable inks, old adhesive, metal staples, plastic windows and food or oil residue. Their poor preservation chemistry does not make them disposable when they contribute to provenance, completeness, rarity or value.
Preserve the original package by
- supporting its intended shape without forcing it;
- isolating loose or staining components where this is safe and reversible;
- housing it within a custom preservation box or tray;
- recording detached parts and limiting repeated opening;
- retaining the relationship between package and contents.
Do not solve the problem by
- discarding the original box or insert;
- laminating, coating or permanently lining it;
- attaching self-adhesive paper or new labels;
- flattening it without considering its original form;
- removing original components solely because they are acidic.

A practical selection hierarchy
1 — Remove the obvious hazard
Move valuable objects away from damp, dirty, reused or visibly deteriorating cardboard; newspaper wrapping; chipboard; greyboard; coloured gift tissue; sticky notes; and pressure-sensitive labels in direct contact.
2 — Provide clean temporary protection
Use clean, undyed paper, a new outer carton or a replaceable plain barrier when immediate physical protection is needed and a properly specified enclosure is not yet available.
3 — Install a sound preservation enclosure
Choose acid-free, lignin-free paper or board, appropriately buffered, correctly sized, smooth and strong enough for the object. Keep seams, adhesives and fasteners away from contact.
4 — Use process-specific or custom housing
For photographs, rare books, mixed media, oversize sheets, fragile packaging or irregular objects, use documented fibre and test specifications, PAT-tested products where relevant and a custom design that manages the dominant risks.
Purchasing and supplier checklist
For important collections, a technical specification is more useful than a product name. Record enough information that the material can be identified, compared and replaced later.
About pH pens
Surface pH pens can offer a rough indication on a disposable sample, but they may stain, give ambiguous results, be distorted by coatings and cannot reveal alkaline reserve, lignin, adhesive quality, dye stability or future ageing. Never test directly on the collectible, and do not let a pen result overrule a complete supplier specification.
Inspection, ageing and replacement
Evidence
Yellowing, browned edges or a dark outline beneath the collectible
What it may mean
The enclosure or backing may contain lignin, acidic sizing, degraded adhesive or contaminated recycled fibre. The outline can indicate migration into the object.
Collector risk
Continued contact may accelerate discolouration, embrittlement or local staining, especially in warm or humid storage.
Proportionate response
Photograph the relationship, isolate the object from the suspect material and rehouse it in specified preservation-quality stock. Retain historic packaging separately when it is part of the collectible.
Evidence
Brittleness, split folds, delamination or loss of stiffness
What it may mean
The enclosure is no longer providing reliable structural support. Cellulose degradation, moisture cycling or adhesive failure may be involved.
Collector risk
The enclosure can tear during handling, collapse onto the object or shed fragments and fibres.
Proportionate response
Move the object using a rigid support. Replace the failed enclosure rather than reinforcing it with ordinary pressure-sensitive tape.
Evidence
Musty odour, tide lines, mould or insect evidence
What it may mean
The problem has crossed from material quality into environmental or biological risk.
Collector risk
Contamination may spread to adjacent boxes and the enclosure may conceal damp contents even when its exterior appears dry.
Proportionate response
Quarantine the unit, document the evidence and inspect internal layers. Treat the room, leak, humidity or pest source as the primary problem.
Evidence
Glossy surfaces sticking, tissue imprinting or fibres adhering
What it may mean
The direct-contact surface is physically or chemically incompatible, or storage pressure and humidity are too high.
Collector risk
Forced separation can lift ink, coating, emulsion or paint. Textured papers may permanently emboss vulnerable surfaces.
Proportionate response
Do not peel adhered layers apart. Reduce pressure, stabilise the environment and seek specialist advice where image or surface material is transferring.
There is no universal replacement interval
Service life depends on original quality, object acidity, temperature, humidity, pollution, handling, storage density, construction and previous water or pest exposure. A high-quality box in stable conditions may remain useful for decades; a backing board beside acidic newsprint may deteriorate much faster.
Replace or rehouse when the enclosure loses support, becomes brittle, stains the object, fails at its seams, no longer fits safely, has been contaminated or no longer reflects current object-specific knowledge.
Handling and orientation
Flat
Often best for prints, posters, maps, brittle papers, damaged books and mounted works. Keep stacks shallow and support the full footprint during movement.
Upright
Suitable for supported folders, robust books, pamphlets and boxed card collections. Objects should stand without leaning, bowing or rattling.
Rolled
Reserved for large flexible sheets that cannot be stored flat. Use a wide archival tube, loose roll, protective interleaving, outer wrap and horizontal support.
Routine enclosure handling
- Lift boxes from beneath rather than by the lid.
- Remove a box from a high shelf before opening it.
- Support large boards and oversize folders with both hands or a rigid carrier.
- Open four-flap enclosures fully before lifting the object.
- Do not drag folders from an overfilled box or carry a box beyond safe weight.
- Keep hands clean and dry and use gloves only where surface sensitivity or contamination justifies them.
- Never use a storage box as a work surface or temporary table.
Boundary with storage environment
An archival box cannot make a hot, damp, leaking or pest-active room safe.
Paper enclosures can reduce dust, light and short-term environmental fluctuation, but they also burn, absorb water, collapse when wet and can support mould or insects. Store them above floor level, away from exterior walls, radiators, pipes, roof leaks and flood-prone spaces, with enough access for inspection.
When to involve a specialist
- The object is stuck to glassine, tissue, backing board or another enclosure layer.
- Media is flaking, powdery, tacky or transferring to the storage material.
- A photographic or architectural process cannot be identified confidently.
- Mould, active pests, wet material or a substantial water incident is involved.
- The original package is structurally failing but historically or financially significant.
- A custom mount must support a valuable, oversize, irregular or composite object.
- Removing acidic backing, adhesive, tape, staples or lining would alter original material.
