Marks, labels and signatures are among the first clues collectors look for - and among the easiest to misunderstand. A name beneath a vase, a signature across a painting, a moulded logo on a toy, a serial number inside a watch or an old retailer label on a cabinet may provide a decisive lead. Yet none of these features automatically proves who made the object, when it was made, whether every component belongs together or whether the object is authentic.
The governing principle is convergence. Strong identification comes when the visible identifier agrees with the object's materials, construction, design, manufacturing history, condition, component relationships and documentary context. The collector's task is therefore not merely to read what a mark says. It is to establish what kind of claim the mark makes, who could have applied it, when and how it was applied, which component it belongs to, and whether the rest of the object supports that claim.
The central rule
A mark identifies what the marking system claims. The object must still demonstrate that the claim is correctly read, correctly understood and legitimately associated with this example.
Collector scenario: the signature that appears to solve everything
A collector finds an object carrying a famous-looking signature. The seller calls it signed by the maker, and several online images appear to show the same name. The identifier is bold, exciting and apparently conclusive.
The slower examination changes the question. Is the signature handwritten, printed, moulded or stamped? Does it sit above or below the finish? Is it original to the object, to a removable mount or to replacement packaging? Does the object match the maker's materials, date and production method? Could the name record a designer, owner, retailer, estate or later dedication instead?
Good research does not dismiss the signature. It restores the signature to its proper place: one claim embedded in material form, to be tested against the whole object.

Marks, labels and signatures can answer many identification questions, but only when the collector distinguishes the physical feature from the role it is being asked to prove.

What an identifier may help establish
Depending on the marking system, it may identify a maker, designer, decorator, workshop, factory, sponsor, retailer, importer, production site, model, pattern, batch, sequence, material standard, inspection, owner, exhibition, repair or route to market. These answers are not interchangeable.
A legally controlled hallmark may provide firm evidence about fineness and assay. A retailer label may explain where an object was sold. A serial number may locate a component within a production sequence. A signature may claim personal authorship. The evidential strength depends on whether the underlying system is understood and whether the object agrees with it.
Classification
Marks operate as systems, not isolated symbols
The productive question is rarely 'What does this symbol mean?' It is 'Who applied this form, under what system, during which period, for what purpose, and does the object fit?'
Maker, factory and workshop marks
These connect an object with a craftsperson, workshop, factory, company or commercially responsible party, but the exact role varies by trade.
A workshop mark may identify collective production rather than an individual hand.
A company mark may cover subcontracted, imported, licensed or externally finished components.
A historic trade name may continue under a successor business.
Hallmarks, assay and controlled marks
Legally or procedurally regulated systems can provide strong evidence because their elements, forms and records are formally defined.
A sponsor's mark may identify the party accepting responsibility for submission, not the person who fabricated every component.
Date letters, pictorial marks or other elements may be optional in some periods and systems.
Forged, transposed, partial and pseudo-hallmarks remain possible.

Retailers may order from several makers or sell under a house brand.
Import and country wording can assist dating but should not be treated as a universal date formula.
An overlabel may reflect export, repricing, compliance or later distribution.
Patent, registration and copyright information
These can establish that a design, invention or protected form existed by a certain date, but rarely date the individual object precisely.
A design may remain in production long after registration.
Later reproductions may retain historic patent or copyright wording.
The number's legal function should be checked before it is used as a production date.
Pattern, model, mould and tooling codes
These identify a design, component, tool, product family or production specification rather than necessarily identifying a complete object.
The same number could instead be a batch, cavity, inspector, price or inventory code.

The code must be interpreted within the manufacturer's own system.
Serial and matching numbers
Serial numbers may support chronology, sequence or component association when the allocation system is understood and supported by records.

Non-matching numbers may indicate replacement, normal production practice or later assembly.
Inspection, military, government and institutional marks
These can record acceptance, ownership, quality grade, arsenal, department, regiment, service or production stage.
Prominent official marks are often mistaken for manufacturer marks.
Small acceptance stamps may be more diagnostic than the brand name.
Institutional ownership must be distinguished from manufacture.
Ownership, collection and inventory marks
Bookplates, stamps, monograms, accession numbers and collection labels can contribute important provenance evidence.
They must be matched to documented examples or institutional records.
A museum-style number alone does not prove museum ownership.

These may record maintenance, reframing, relining, rewiring, resizing, overhaul or other later intervention.

Material reading
How the identifier was applied can be as important as what it says
Application method can reveal production stage, chronology, originality, later addition and the relationship between the mark and the surrounding surface.
Impressed, stamped or struck
Look for displaced or compressed material, edge shape, variation in depth, double strikes, reverse deformation, glaze interaction and wear consistent with the surrounding surface.
Moulded or cast
The mark should normally share the material and surface history of the object. Repeated identical signatures may be part of the mould rather than individually applied authorship.
Painted or transfer-printed
Consider pigment, brush behaviour, transfer edges, dot patterns, firing, underglaze or overglaze position, misalignment and whether the mark belongs to factory production or later decoration.
Engraved, etched or laser-applied
Examine line regularity, tool chatter, burrs, oxidation within cuts, polish interaction and the technology appropriate to the claimed period. Modern techniques are not automatically fraudulent when period-correct.
Handwritten or hand-signed
Assess line fluency, pressure, ink flow, hesitation, retouching, letter formation, instrument, surface, placement and interaction with varnish, dirt or wear.
Applied label, plaque or sticker
Paper, foil, cloth, metal, printing, typography, die-cut shape, adhesive, staining, edge wear, overlap and substrate reaction all contribute to the assessment.
Normal variation is not the same as a warning sign
Genuine marks vary through worn punches, uneven pressure, shrinkage, glaze pooling, hand application, different factories, export versions, changing inks and ordinary production tolerances. Signatures vary with age, health, speed, writing instrument, surface and circumstance. Labels may remain unexpectedly clean when protected inside a case or beneath a backing.
Warning signs arise when the variation conflicts with the claimed process or history: a sharply cut mark on a uniformly worn surface, a signature above modern varnish, a company address not used in the claimed period, a moulded mark presented as a unique autograph, or an adhesive and typography incompatible with the proposed date. One anomaly may require explanation; several independent contradictions can overturn the identification.
Signatures
The word 'signed' describes a feature, not a complete authentication conclusion
A signature may represent authorship, design, approval, ownership, dedication, studio practice, estate control or mechanical reproduction. Precise description prevents these different meanings from collapsing into one claim.
Authorship claim
Handwritten or painted signature
May support authorship when the medium, timing, placement, handwriting, provenance and object all agree. A single visual match found online is weak comparison evidence.
Production feature
Moulded, cast or printed signature
May identify the design or tooling from which an object was produced, but does not prove lifetime production, authorisation, date of manufacture or personal handling.

Labels
Labels preserve layers of object history
Because labels are separately made and attached, they are vulnerable to loss and transfer. Yet they can preserve richer contextual information than an integral factory mark by recording successive stages in manufacture, sale, ownership, exhibition, shipping and treatment.
Manufacturer and product labels
May record company, factory, model, material, size, patent, guarantee, serial number or care instructions. Typography, address, legal form, printing and adhesive should fit verified period examples.
Retailer and distributor labels
May narrow market, address, product positioning or sale period. Old label stock, overlapping addresses and predecessor branding can prevent exact dating.
Gallery, dealer and auction labels
Record what an organisation catalogued, attributed or sold at a particular time. They are evidence of historical presentation, not automatic proof that the attribution was correct.
Exhibition and collection labels
Can be powerful when matched to catalogues, loan records, photographs or accession registers. Detached or transplanted labels require particular caution.
Shipping, customs and handling labels
May reconstruct route, consignor, consignee, date, transport or storage even when they contribute little to maker identification.
Repair and conservation labels
May explain new backings, frames, linings, upholstery, wiring, mounts or refinishing. They document intervention rather than original manufacture.
Genuine evidence can still be wrongly associated
A period gallery label may be genuine but attached to a replacement frame. A real box label may sit on married packaging. An authentic autograph may be on a page inserted into another book. A genuine certificate may have become separated from the object it once described. A correct serial plate may have been transplanted with a component.
The collector therefore asks two separate questions: is the identifier itself genuine, and is it legitimately associated with this object in this configuration? Authenticity of the evidence does not automatically prove authenticity of the relationship.
Assembly
A mark belongs first to the component on which it appears
Composite objects are especially vulnerable to overclaiming. Identify each marked component before describing the complete object.
Painting and frame
A framer, gallery or exhibition label on the frame identifies the frame's history unless evidence connects it securely to the painting.
Watch or clock
Dial, movement, case and service marks may identify different makers, dates and episodes. The complete object should not be described before each component is assessed.
Furniture
A marked drawer, lock, hinge or retailer label can be original, replaced or transferred. One marked component does not automatically identify the carcass.
Toy and packaging
Copyright, tooling and licensing lines on the toy may differ from dates and market information on the box. Married packaging is common enough to require separate recording.
Book and binding
Printer, publisher, binder, bookseller, library and owner marks may belong to different stages. A tipped-in signed leaf or transferred bookplate changes the relationship evidence.
Camera, instrument or machine
Body, lens, chassis, engine, case and accessories may have separate numbers and manufacturers. Matching or mismatching systems must be interpreted category by category.
Record component association explicitly
Name the exact marked component and its location.
State whether the component is integral, removable, replaceable or detached.
Record matching and non-matching numbers without assuming what either means.
Look for evidence of replacement, repair, later assembly or married packaging.
Distinguish what the component identifies from what is inferred about the whole.
Dating
Mark chronology narrows possibility; it rarely supplies an exact production date alone
Logo redesigns, addresses, company names, legal suffixes, mergers, factory moves, trademarks, country wording, royal warrants and label construction can create useful periods of use.
The chronology trap
Suppose a verified label form was introduced in 1925 and replaced in 1935. The proportionate conclusion is that the label form is consistent with use during that approximate period. It does not automatically prove that the object was manufactured in 1930.
Old stock may have remained in use; regional and export labels may overlap; a later repairer may have applied a replacement; a historic brand may have been revived; and reference chronologies may be incomplete. The date belongs first to the identifier's use, then only by further reasoning to the object.
Evidence weight
Judge evidential value by understanding, association and corroboration
Marks do not have a fixed universal rank. A modest inspection code linked to a factory ledger may be stronger than a dramatic signature supported only by resemblance.
