Identification evidence is the observable, documentary, comparative and technical information that helps determine what a collectible is. It may establish object type, maker, brand, product, model, issue, variant, date range, place of manufacture, intended use or relationship to known examples. It should explain why an object fits a proposed identity, not merely repeat what somebody believes it to be.
Identification is therefore not a single act of recognition. It is an evidence-led process in which observations are recorded, alternative explanations are tested, sources are weighed and the result is expressed at an appropriate level of confidence. The strongest conclusions usually come from convergence: independent evidence streams supporting the same bounded claim while material contradictions are acknowledged rather than hidden.

Identification should explain why an object fits a particular identity, not merely state what someone believes it to be.
A useful record keeps materials, techniques, dimensions, marks, inscriptions, packaging, ownership history, condition, comparisons and documentary references as distinct but connected evidence categories. That separation prevents one attractive clue from silently doing the work of several different claims.
Collector scenario: the boxed game supplement
A collector finds a printed game supplement described as a rare first printing. The front cover resembles the known early issue and the publisher logo appears correct. That recognition is a useful lead, but it is not yet a defensible edition claim.
The collector records the product code, copyright line, printing location, page count, dimensions, binding, internal advertisements and packaging. The code and publisher address match a dated trade catalogue. The page count and binding agree with securely documented examples. An internal advertisement promotes a product not released until the following year, however, and one insert appears to be a later replacement.
The narrow conclusion may be: high confidence in the product and regional issue; probable second printing; original completeness unresolved. That is stronger research than preserving the more valuable seller description simply because the cover looked right.

Collectors make better decisions when they separate the identity question from neighbouring questions that use some of the same evidence.
Identification
What is it? Identification names the object type, product, model, issue, version, date range or other relevant layer.
Examples include a particular toy model, a first-edition book, a replacement accessory, a pottery pattern or a promotional rather than retail release.
Attribution
Who probably made, designed or produced it?
Attribution is especially important where an object is unsigned, workshop-made, subcontracted, licensed or incompletely documented.
Authentication
Is it genuinely what it claims to be?
Authentication tests originality, contemporaneity, legitimacy and alteration. An object can be correctly identified as a product type yet counterfeit as an example.
Provenance
Where has it been, and who owned or handled it?
Provenance can reinforce identification and authentication, but an impressive history can still be misassociated with the wrong object or component.
Recognition
Begin with the object type before the famous name
The first question is often not “Who made it?” but “What kind of thing is it?” Overall form, configuration, number and arrangement of parts, function, method of attachment, expected relationship with another object and traces of use can all establish object type. A small metal item might be a badge, fitting, token, seal, buckle component, decorative mount or machine part. Naming a maker before resolving that basic category can send the investigation down the wrong reference trail.

Judgement
Classify evidence before weighing it
The same observation can be described along several useful axes. These distinctions expose why some evidence looks impressive but remains weak.
Positive evidence
A feature directly supports the proposed identity.
Example: a documented product code on the object matches the code in a dated manufacturer catalogue.
Negative evidence
An expected feature is absent or an observed feature is incompatible.
Example: a claimed first issue carries the publisher address introduced only after the company relocated.
Neutral evidence
A feature is compatible but does not distinguish the claim from alternatives.
Example: the object uses a material common to many manufacturers throughout the proposed period.
Direct and indirect
Direct evidence explicitly connects the object to an identity, such as a serial number in a factory ledger. Indirect evidence supports through inference, such as construction matching known examples. Direct evidence can be false or misassociated; indirect evidence can become compelling through convergence.
Intrinsic and extrinsic
Intrinsic evidence is physically present in the object: material, mark, wear, construction or hidden feature. Extrinsic evidence sits outside it: receipt, catalogue, archive, testimony or database. Strong cases connect the two.
Primary and secondary
Primary sources were created close to production or use; secondary sources are later interpretations. Primary does not mean infallible, and a rigorous modern study may correct an erroneous contemporary record.
Independence: four sources may still be one claim
A dealer description cites a collector guide; an auction listing copies the dealer; a website copies the auction; a forum answer cites the website. The collector appears to have four confirmations but has only one evidential chain.
Independent convergence would look different: an object mark, a dated factory catalogue, an archival invoice and a material examination all generated through separate routes. Record source lineage whenever possible, especially when online descriptions use identical wording.

Relevance
Does it address the exact claim?
A company history may prove that a maker existed, but not that the maker produced this object. Evidence must be matched to the precise claim under consideration.
Specificity
How narrowly does it identify?
Some evidence identifies only a broad class; other evidence distinguishes a model, issue, batch or individual object. Do not let broad compatibility masquerade as precise identification.
Reliability
Who created it, and by what process?
A contemporary factory ledger and an anonymous marketplace caption are not equivalent. Reliability depends on authorship, method, access and the possibility of error or bias.
Association
Can it be securely linked to this object?
A correct manual, receipt or certificate is weak if it may have been paired with the object later. Association is often the hidden weakness in otherwise impressive documentation.
Integrity
Has the evidence been altered or moved?
Labels, components, signatures, packaging and surfaces may be replaced, restored, refinished or transferred. The evidence must be assessed in its present physical state.
Contemporaneity
How close is it to production or use?
Contemporary records can preserve original terminology and specifications, but later scholarship may correct contemporary errors. Distance matters, but it does not decide quality alone.
Independence
Was it generated separately?
A dealer, auction house, website and forum may all repeat one originating claim. Repetition is not convergence unless the sources have genuinely independent foundations.
Consistency
Does it fit the rest of the object?
Strong-looking evidence should still agree with construction, chronology, components and known examples. Quiet contradictions can outweigh an attractive mark or story.
Falsifiability
What would show the claim is wrong?
A defensible identification names the observations that could defeat it. Claims that absorb every contradiction without changing are stories rather than testable conclusions.
Completeness
What remains unexamined?
The reverse, underside, interior, packaging, loose parts or hidden construction may hold the decisive evidence. Confidence should reflect the areas that have not yet been inspected.
Comparison
Match, eliminate and learn from populations
Comparison with known examples is central to identification, but the quality of the comparator matters. The best reference example has an established identity, clear photographs, measurements, material description, documented history and sufficiently unaltered condition. Compare the same features, differing features and unexplained features rather than searching only for a resemblance that confirms the preferred name.
Matching
Matching asks which features agree: code, dimensions, mark placement, construction, typography, component arrangement and chronology.
A match is strongest when the reference explains why those features are diagnostic, not when it merely shows a similar front-facing image.
Elimination
Elimination asks what else the object could be, what evidence each alternative requires and which observations rule those alternatives out.
A missing expected feature may matter, but only after damage, replacement, production variation and incomplete documentation have been considered.
Why one example is not always enough
A reference population can reveal normal variation, batch differences, recurring mark placement, component substitutions, chronological changes and genuine outliers. This is especially important in mass-produced collectibles, where every small production difference can otherwise be promoted into a named variant.
A repeated feature across independently sourced examples is more likely to reflect production practice than a feature seen once on an object of uncertain history. An anomaly should prompt investigation, not immediate elevation. A defensible new variant normally requires repeated examples, a coherent production explanation, reliable dating and separation from damage, fading, repair or later assembly.
Chronology
Use dated features as boundaries, not decorative clues
One well-dated feature can constrain the whole object. A company name adopted after a merger, a new postcode format, barcode system, trademark form, safety notice, copyright wording, commercial material or franchise launch may establish a date before which the object could not have existed. A documented change can also establish the latest date by which an earlier feature should have disappeared.
Terminus post quem
The object cannot predate a feature. If the packaging uses a legal notice introduced in 1986, the packaged configuration cannot be a 1984 retail issue as claimed.
Terminus ante quem
The object must predate a documented change. If the old company address disappeared from all production after a confirmed relocation, its intact presence may establish an upper boundary, subject to leftover-stock use.
Patent, copyright and registration dates require interpretation
A patent filing may establish an earliest possible date or document design development; it is not automatically the production date of the object. A patent number may remain on later products for years. Copyright dates can refer to the underlying work rather than the printing, pressing or physical example in hand.
Conflict
What to do when the evidence does not agree
Conflict is normal. A mark may suggest one date while packaging suggests another; provenance may name one maker while materials point elsewhere; a serial number may fit while construction does not. The correct response is not to average the claims into a convenient compromise, nor to discard the awkward evidence. Separate the claims and investigate why the conflict exists.

Missing evidence is not automatically negative evidence
The absence of a mark may mean the object was never marked, the mark wore away, the marked component was replaced, the mark is hidden, an unmarked run existed or the object is not what it is claimed to be. “Not seen” should not quietly become “never present.”
Absence becomes stronger negative evidence when all four conditions are met

Identification evidence can be lost before research even begins. Cleaning, dismantling, removing labels, discarding packaging or separating loose material may destroy context that cannot be recreated.
Photograph the object, packaging and loose components as received.
Retain seller information, labels, inserts and apparently unrelated fragments.
Record where each part was found before rearranging the object.

The best identification is not necessarily the most precise. It is the most specific conclusion that the surviving evidence can support without hiding material uncertainty.
Record supporting, contradictory and neutral evidence.

A useful identification record shows how evidence supports and limits the conclusion. It should allow another researcher to reproduce the reasoning, recognise alteration and see what remains open. A database title such as “1983 UK version” is a label; an evidence bundle is the case behind it.

Sometimes the evidence supports only: English ceramic figure, probably mid-nineteenth century, manufacturer unresolved. That is better research than attaching a famous factory name without adequate support. Identification is not the hunt for the most impressive label. It is the disciplined construction of the best explanation of the surviving evidence, with clear boundaries between what is observed, what is inferred and what remains unknown.
