Light and fading

Where to look: Compare exterior and interior, front and back, displayed and shaded faces, blocked areas, undersides and richer colours inside folds or under old labels.

Storage: the main preservation tool
Good storage usually does more for basketry, cane, bamboo and woven plant materials than any repair. The best storage principle is simple but demanding: support the object in the position where its structure is strongest, with no pressure on weak points and no hidden climate trap.
Storage should make the object safer and easier to inspect. If housing prevents inspection, snags fibres, compresses the weave, traps moisture or encourages stacking, it is not good preservation even if it looks tidy.
Support the strongest structure, not the most convenient feature
The safe support may be the base, a padded tray, a shaped foam support, a low-sided box or a custom cradle. It is rarely the handle, rim, loop, decorative projection or cane surface.
Store in the object's strongest posture
Many baskets and plant-fibre objects should rest in their original orientation of use, but only if that position does not load a weak base, rim or handle. Odd shapes may need padded support rather than stacking or hanging.
Internal support prevents collapse; it should not reshape
Loose acid-free tissue, inert foam, padded rings, polyester-filled stockinette or shaped trays can prevent collapse. The support should not push the weave outward or force the object back to an idealised form.
Dust protection is preventive conservation
Closed cabinets, archival boxes, dust covers and clean shelves reduce abrasive dirt and pest-friendly debris. Protective housing should still allow inspection and avoid trapping residual damp.

- Bubble wrap directly against surfaces, PVC, sticky tapes, rubber bands, wire ties, fishing line and tight wrapping.
- Stacking objects inside one another without separation and support, especially where rims, bases or handles are fragile.
Display conditions
Display should not ask the object to perform old function indefinitely. A basket hung by its handle, a cane chair left available for sitting, a bamboo object placed in sun, or a raffia figure displayed in high light may all be slowly losing what makes them collectible.
For private collectors, the practical display standard is dim, indirect, cool, stable, clean and supported. The more fragile, dyed, rare, culturally significant or valuable the object is, the more display becomes a controlled exposure rather than a permanent right.
- Keep away from windows, direct sun, fireplaces, radiators, bathrooms, kitchens, conservatories, damp rooms and hot display lighting.
- Use low, indirect light. If a piece is dyed, painted, fragile or valuable, treat light exposure as cumulative loss rather than simple display atmosphere.
- Support from underneath or through a mount that carries the body. Avoid hanging by original handles, loops, rims or single weak points.

Cleaning: safest sequence
Cleaning should never be the first thought simply because the object looks dusty. Woven plant materials hold deposits in ways that make cleaning both attractive and risky. Dust can abrade and feed mould, but deposits can also be evidence. The safest cleaning sequence moves from question to documentation to the least invasive method, and sometimes stops before cleaning at all.
Step 1 - decide whether cleaning is preservation or loss
Ask first: Is the deposit loose dust, use evidence, pigment, food residue, pest evidence, mould, surface finish, cultural material or unstable fibre?
Proceed only if: The surface is stable, the deposit is not evidence that needs recording, and cleaning will not remove colour, fragments, repair clues or technique evidence.
Pause when: There are flaking surfaces, powdery fibres, unstable dyes, historic residues, loose weave, mould, insect debris, ethnographic context or high value.
Step 2 - dry surface cleaning, if safe
Method: A soft brush can direct loose dust toward a low-suction vacuum nozzle protected by gauze or mesh so fragments are not accidentally lost.
Why it helps: This reduces loose dust while giving the collector a chance to stop if fibres, pigment, decoration or fragments begin to move.

Mould and damp
Mould is not only a surface problem. It is evidence of a moisture story: high humidity, poor airflow, damp storage, enclosed boxes, contact with walls or floors, contaminated packing or wet contents. Things collectors commonly do wrong
The deepest mistake is treating these objects as still-functional household goods after they have crossed into evidence-bearing collectibles. The everyday instinct is often the damaging instinct.
- Lifting old baskets by handles or rims because that was their original function.
- Stacking baskets inside one another without support or separation.
- Washing, soaking, steaming or using vinegar, detergent, bleach, wet wipes or household sprays.
- Oiling cane or bamboo because it looks dry.
- Putting wicker near radiators, windows, kitchens, conservatories, damp walls or fireplaces.
- Using baskets as storage containers or sitting on old cane seats because the object still looks complete.
- Repainting, re-caning, re-binding or reweaving without documenting original surfaces and repairs.
- Throwing away loose fragments, old bindings, pest debris or residues before recording them.
- Confusing patina with dirt, old damage with active damage, or stable evidence with something that must be corrected.
Preservation hierarchy
When a collector is unsure, the safest order of action is usually not treatment first. It is handling restraint, support, environment, inspection, documentation and only then carefully judged cleaning or specialist intervention.
- Stop handling damage: no lifting by handles, no use testing, no stacking, no flexing and no forcing distorted shapes.
- Improve support: trays, boxes, padded rings, gentle internal support, stable bases and clear handling routes.
- Reduce light: dim, indirect display, no direct sun, no hot spotlights and rotation for sensitive pieces.
- Stabilise climate: avoid damp, extreme dryness, hot storage, enclosed stagnant air and rapid RH changes.
- Inspect for pests and mould: especially new acquisitions, dark storage, organic debris, old cardboard and mixed collections.
- Clean only if safe: dry, gentle, documented and with evidence preserved before dust or debris is removed.
- Document everything: material, technique, damage, repair, fragments, storage support, restrictions and photographs.
- Avoid amateur repair: especially glue, wire, soaking, reshaping, oiling, overpainting and replacement that changes evidence.
- Consult a conservator for value, rarity, cultural sensitivity, active deterioration or any intervention that changes structure or appearance.
When to pause for specialist judgement
Specialist judgement is most important when the object carries weight, has cultural or maker significance, shows active deterioration, contains unstable added materials, or would require an intervention that changes structure or appearance. In this material group, repair and evidence are often entangled.
- Active strand breakage, opening weave, failing rims, loose bindings, fragile handles or load-bearing cane, rush, wicker or bamboo seating.
- Bamboo or cane objects with splitting at nodes, old metal fasteners, tight bends, lacquered surfaces, decorated finishes, inscriptions or uncertain repairs.
- Ethnographic, ceremonial, archaeological, natural-history or culturally sensitive objects where material, repair and use history may affect interpretation.
- Visible insect evidence, fresh powder, mould risk, damp history, staining, odour or unknown deposits trapped in the weave.
- Any proposed reweaving, humidification, soaking, reshaping, gluing, tying, staining, waxing, varnishing, pest treatment, structural use or sale restoration.
