Storage is where much textile and leather deterioration quietly happens. A garment can survive decades of careful use and then be permanently marked by ten years on the wrong hanger. A flag can retain its colour and still split along the fold that storage imposed. A leather case can look complete until unsupported panels collapse and hard creases crack.
For textiles, leather, fur, feathers, hair, skins, costume accessories and flexible organic composites, storage is not a neutral pause. It is a continuing physical treatment. The object is being asked to lie, hang, fold, roll, compress, breathe, carry weight, resist gravity or hold a shape while nobody is looking.
The collector judgement is therefore not simply whether the object is in a box, drawer, cupboard or case. It is whether the chosen storage posture removes avoidable stress from the weakest fibres, seams, linings, finishes, surfaces, handles, straps, folds and decorations.
Core preservation principle
Support the form. Do not force the form.
Textiles and leather remember pressure. Creases become split lines. Compression becomes distortion. Hanging becomes tearing. Folding becomes fibre fatigue. Tight boxing turns a protective enclosure into a press.
Good storage supports the form the object can safely hold now. It does not force a historic object to become flat, straight, display-ready, tightly closed, neatly folded or compact just because that is convenient for the shelf.
Preservation boundary
Support is not reshaping
A support should stop collapse, distribute weight and reduce bending. It should not push the object into a preferred silhouette, close a reluctant flap, make a brittle boot stand straighter or flatten a cockled textile into obedience.
Rolling, flattening, humidifying, reshaping and forcing old leather or textiles back into form can become conservation treatment. When the material resists, powdering, cracking, flaking or detachment are specialist thresholds rather than packing problems.
Flexible versus embrittled
Lower-risk signal
The object bends gently, lies evenly, has no active cracking and does not shed fibres, finish or leather powder when moved.
Higher-risk signal
The object is stiff, shattering, powdering, red-rotted, heavily creased, detached, lined with failing silk or already split along old folds.
Decision: The more embrittled the object, the less acceptable rolling, tight folding, hanging and reshaping become.
Plain surface versus surface relief
Lower-risk signal
The surface is flat and undecorated enough to tolerate gentle contact with clean interleaving and light support.
Higher-risk signal
Pile, fur, feathers, beadwork, embroidery, buttons, appliques, metallic thread, paint or raised emblems cast shadows or create high points.
Decision: If the surface casts shadows, treat compression as a major risk and give the relief space rather than pressure.
Single material versus composite object
Lower-risk signal
The object behaves as one material and the layers move together when supported.
Higher-risk signal
Leather, silk, wool, metal, paint, rubber, plastic, foam, adhesive, fur, feathers or linings age at different rates in the same object.
Decision: Store for the weakest material, not the most visually dominant one. The first failing component sets the storage limit.
Accessible storage versus hidden storage
Lower-risk signal
The object can be inspected, lifted on support, checked for pests and returned without dragging, squeezing or unwrapping in mid-air.
Higher-risk signal
The object is buried, tightly wrapped, difficult to remove, stored with several other pieces or dependent on memory of how it was packed.
Decision: Storage that cannot be safely inspected is too dependent on luck. Access is part of preservation, not an administrative extra.
Leather, skin and suede
Historic leather can become stiff, acidic, powdery, dry or brittle. Storage should reduce bending, support straps and thin areas from beneath, keep buckles and fittings from pressing into surfaces, and avoid plastic bags, tight closures, saddle soap, dressings and unknown oils.
- -Is the object supported in its present shape rather than forced back into a former shape?
- -Are handles, straps, belts, hinges and buckles free from load-bearing pressure?
- -Can air circulate enough to reduce mould risk without exposing the object to dust and light?
Fur, feathers and hair
These materials are easily distorted by compression and are attractive to pests. They need generous space, shaped support where appropriate, minimal surface weight, breathable dust protection and regular inspection.
- -Is pile, plume, hair or skin substrate being flattened by tissue, a lid or adjacent objects?
- -Is there evidence of moths, beetles, shedding, odour, skin cracking or broken feather shafts?
- -Can the object be checked without crushing the very texture storage is meant to protect?
Flags, banners and flat textiles
Large symbolic textiles are often damaged because their size makes folding tempting. Flat storage is safest when available; rolling may suit stable undecorated flat textiles; folding is the least desirable compromise and should avoid paint, emblems, seams, fringe, tears and brittle areas.
- -Would rolling impose a safer broad curve, or would decoration and weak layers make rolling hazardous?
- -Are old fold lines already structural injuries rather than merely visual creases?
- -Can the storage decision be documented so future handlers understand where stress remains?
Garments, uniforms and costume
Garments are three-dimensional objects made from two-dimensional materials. A robust-looking exterior can hide weak linings, underarms, collar edges, moth-damaged wool, weighted trims or failing seams. Store by weight, structure and weakness rather than by wardrobe habit.
- -Is the garment strong enough to hang, or is the hanger becoming the damaging part of the storage system?
- -Are heavy beadwork, skirts, ceremonial trim or metal fittings pulling against weaker ground fabric?
- -Can the garment be moved without lifting by shoulders, sleeves, straps, hems or decorations?
Shoes, boots, gloves and bags
Accessories are small, but many are vulnerable three-dimensional forms. Shoes, boots, gloves and bags often need gentle internal support so they do not collapse, while avoiding overstuffing that distorts seams, widens openings or cracks brittle leather.
- -Is support preventing collapse without forcing a return to showroom shape?
- -Are chains, frames, clasps, handles and straps lying so they do not press into leather, silk or beadwork?
- -Are fingers, vamps, boot shafts and corners protected from hard creases?
Composite objects
Mixed textile, leather, metal, rubber, plastic, adhesive, foam, feather and fur objects create the hardest storage decisions. The safest storage plan is usually designed around the component most likely to fail first.
- -Which component will fail first if the object is lifted, folded, hung, rolled, boxed or compressed?
- -Could one stable-looking material be hiding risk in a lining, coating, adhesive, metal fitting or trim?
- -Does the storage enclosure separate incompatible materials without making the object too tight to remove?
Specialist threshold
When storage becomes conservation design
Seek specialist advice when the storage act itself may damage the object. The threshold is reached when safe housing requires flattening, rolling, reshaping, humidification, separating unstable components, pest or mould treatment, or decisions affecting a high-value or provenance-rich object.
Myth
Acid-free tissue solves storage.
Reality
It helps with contact and acidity, but it does not solve compression, poor support, bad folding, damp, pests, unsafe handling or an overfilled box.
Myth
If it came folded, it can stay folded.
Reality
Historic folds may already be damage. Reusing them can sometimes be safer than creating new ones, but they still need padding, inspection and documentation.
Myth
Hanging is best because garments were made to hang.
Reality
Modern wardrobe logic does not apply to aged costume. Many garments are safer boxed because hanging concentrates load at shoulders, seams and weak linings.
Myth
Rolling is always better than folding.
Reality
Rolling can be excellent for suitable large flat textiles, but it is unsafe for weak, stiff, decorated, detached, irregular or multi-layered objects.
Myth
Leather needs oil before storage.
Reality
Routine dressing can darken, stain, attract dirt, alter surfaces and complicate future conservation. Support and stable storage usually matter more.
Myth
A sealed plastic box is safest.
Reality
It may block dust and leaks, but it can trap moisture, concentrate odours and encourage mould if conditions or contents are wrong.

Judge storage by stress, not tidiness
A beautifully packed box can still be harmful if the object is folded sharply, crushed, sealed damp or forced into shape. A less elegant arrangement may be safer if the object is supported, uncompressed, accessible and stable.
The best storage protects the object from the environment, supports its present physical condition and avoids creating the next damage pattern. Storage, folding and compression are therefore not housekeeping details. They are central preservation decisions.
