Identification Views
An identification view is a photograph made to establish what a collectible is, which version it is and, where possible, which individual physical copy it is. Its job is not merely to show the object attractively. It must preserve enough visual evidence for a knowledgeable person to recognise, distinguish and match the item later without having it in front of them.
For collectors, this matters whenever an object is catalogued, insured, valued, researched, sold, loaned, inherited, transported or recovered after loss. A reliable identification record combines images with a unique collection reference, written description, measurements, markings and component information. Photography is strongest when it forms part of that record rather than standing alone.
The governing test
Do not ask, “Have I taken enough photographs?”
Ask instead: “Could someone identify this object accurately without having it in front of them?” The object, not a fixed numerical rule, determines the number and type of views required.
Identity is layered, not binary
A photograph can succeed at one level of identification and fail at another. A front cover may show the product clearly yet say nothing about the printing. A copyright panel may establish the edition but not distinguish one owned copy from another. Strong documentation moves deliberately through four levels.
Level 1
Object category
The overall image establishes what kind of thing is present: a book, coin, figure, ceramic, record, poster, garment, component or set.
Collector risk
A visually attractive crop can still fail if the full form, outline or construction is hidden.
Level 2
Product or subject
The recognisable face reveals the title, model, character, denomination, principal illustration, logo or pattern by which the item is commonly known.
Collector risk
Recognition of the product family is not the same as identification of the edition or variant.
Level 3
Edition or variant
Small details such as a copyright line, printer's key, product code, mould number, country mark, barcode, label wording or packaging revision distinguish closely related versions.

The most useful image may be a plain photograph of a spine, base, inner flap or legal panel rather than the front artwork.
Level 4
Individual physical copy
Serial numbers, signatures, inscriptions, repairs, stains, chips, crease patterns, production anomalies and distinctive wear can act as a visual fingerprint.

Condition flaws may reduce market appeal yet increase the strength of copy-specific identification.
The visual fingerprint paradox
A crease, repair, chip, stain, handwritten note or irregular paint application may be undesirable in grading terms but extremely valuable in identification terms. Do not retouch away copy-specific evidence merely because it makes the object look less pristine. A documentary master and a cleaned presentation derivative serve different purposes.
Identification is not the same as every other photographic purpose
One image can perform several documentary jobs, but those jobs should be recognised rather than assumed. The distinctions below prevent a polished image from being treated as evidence it does not actually contain.
Identification view

A generic or incomplete view may identify only the product type, not the owned copy.
Condition view
Meaning
Records physical state at a particular date, including wear, damage, alteration and deterioration.

A condition close-up may be excellent evidence of damage while giving too little context to identify the object.
Authentication view
Meaning
Preserves features used to assess genuineness, such as materials, construction, printing, signatures or security details.

A photograph can display a mark without proving that the mark or the object is authentic.
Provenance view
Meaning
Records labels, ownership marks, receipts, auction stickers and inscriptions linked to history and ownership.
Collector risk
Context may be lost if the evidence is photographed separately without showing its relationship to the object.
Presentation or sales view
Meaning
Makes the collectible attractive and understandable to an audience or buyer.
Collector risk
Styling, shallow focus, dramatic lighting or selective angles can conceal identity-bearing evidence.
Boundary with authentication
Identification establishes what an object appears to be. Authentication assesses whether that identity is genuine. A photograph may show a signature, hologram, maker's mark, code or certificate, but it does not automatically prove that any of those features are authentic.
Preserve the evidence precisely and describe what is visible. Move claims about genuineness, attribution or manufacturing origin into the authentication record, where they can be supported by comparison, provenance, expert examination or scientific testing.
The primary view: representative, not decorative
The primary view is the image most likely to represent the item in a collection database, catalogue, insurance schedule or application interface. It should show the whole object, present its most recognisable side, minimise distortion, separate the outline from the background and remain understandable as a thumbnail.
For books, cards, records and packaged toys this is often the front. For figures or sculpture, a three-quarter view may communicate form more effectively. For an irregular functional object, the most informative side may be the one associated with normal use. The best-looking angle and the best-identifying angle are not always the same.

Choose views according to the object
Flat objects benefit from orthogonal photography: the camera sensor is kept approximately parallel to the photographed face so text, border width, trimming and layout can be compared without strong parallax. Three-dimensional objects usually need several angles. Objects with removable, folded, boxed or mechanical states may need to be shown closed, open, assembled and disassembled.

Collector judgement
The group view proves relationship; individual images prove the identity of the members. One photograph rarely does both jobs well.
Group view versus member identity
A photograph of a complete set proves that its parts were together at a particular time. It rarely identifies every member sufficiently on its own. The group view documents the relationship; individual views document the members. Where packaging has fitted spaces, photograph empty spaces as well as present components because they may reveal omissions or substitutions.
Technical quality should serve identification
There is no single lighting or background recipe suitable for every collectible. The correct setup is the one that makes identity-bearing features legible without introducing misleading colour, shape or texture. The following axes are more useful than a rigid equipment prescription.
Geometry
Evidence-preserving practice
Camera parallel to flat faces; natural proportions; complete contour; minimal perspective distortion.
Failure mode
Trapezoidal covers, clipped edges, extreme wide-angle perspective or an angle chosen only for drama.
Focus and resolution

Every identity-bearing feature is readable in at least one retained high-resolution image.

A sharp thumbnail or social-media copy is mistaken for a master even though small codes cannot be inspected.
Lighting

Direct flash, uncontrolled glare, deep shadows or ring lighting that suppresses texture needed for recognition.
Colour

Neutral lighting, stable white balance, retained original and a colour reference where colour distinguishes a variant.

Mixed lighting, filters or confidence that a screen rendering is an absolute measurement of colour.
Background

Clean, visually neutral and sufficiently contrasting to separate the outline and reveal detached fragments.

Patterned, reflective or same-toned backgrounds that hide edges, create colour casts or confuse transparent objects.
Scale
Evidence-preserving practice
Written dimensions supported by a ruler or scale in the same plane where size is not obvious.
Failure mode
Hands, pens or familiar coins used as informal references whose dimensions and perspective are uncertain.
Two images are sometimes more truthful than one
Even lighting may identify colour and printed information while suppressing embossing, engraving or relief. Angled light may reveal texture while exaggerating it. Retain an evenly lit overall image and a second feature-revealing view rather than forcing one photograph to perform incompatible jobs.
Visible identifiers, metadata and file links
A physical slate or label beside the object can connect the photograph visibly to the collection record, especially during bulk photography. It should be legible, removable through cropping, placed beside rather than on the object and never conceal an edge or cast a shadow over a feature.
Identification information may be visible in the image, embedded in the file or stored in the collection database. None of these locations is infallible. Embedded metadata can be stripped by editing or sharing; visible labels can be cropped; database links can be broken. Resilience comes from using more than one layer and keeping the database as the authoritative relationship record.

Meaningful filenames provide a recovery path when files become detached, but they do not replace database fields for object identifier, view orientation, capture date, photographer, editing status, master location and superseded status.
A repeatable identification workflow
Define the identity question
Decide whether the record must identify the category, product, variant, individual copy, complete set or all of these. The required views follow from that decision.
Inspect before photographing
Locate titles, codes, maker's marks, serial numbers, labels, joins, packaging revisions, repairs and copy-specific irregularities before choosing the sequence.
Capture the primary overall view
Show the whole object from its most recognisable and least distorted side. It should remain understandable as a thumbnail and correspond to one record only.
Add the views that remove uncertainty
Photograph the reverse, sides, top, base, interior, open state, marks and components only as needed to answer the identity question completely.
Record the copy fingerprint
Include serials, inscriptions, signatures, repairs, anomalies or distinctive wear that could distinguish this owned example from another of the same variant.
Link, label and retain
Name the view meaningfully, link it to the owned-item record, preserve the capture date and original file, and keep superseded images rather than silently replacing history.
Test the set as a stranger
Ask whether a knowledgeable person without the object could identify the same product, variant and, where possible, the same physical copy.

Do not dismantle for the sake of the photograph
Mechanical objects, sealed packaging, fragile bindings and vulnerable assemblies may contain valuable identifying information internally. That does not justify unsafe opening, forced disassembly or destructive access. Record what can be seen safely, note the limitation and seek a conservator or relevant specialist when the evidential benefit genuinely outweighs the handling risk.

Identification in loss, insurance and transfer
Theft or loss
Overall appearance, exact dimensions, serials, inscriptions, repairs, unusual marks and unique modifications make recovery and return more plausible. A catalogue image may prove the product existed; it rarely proves which copy was owned.
Insurance
Images can show that an item existed, which version and components were present and which serial or distinctive features belonged to it. They should be linked with receipts, valuations and ownership records because photography alone does not establish value or title.
Sale, loan or consignment
A dated image set creates a shared reference for the exact object, components, packaging, labels and serial number transferred. Preserve the transfer-time set rather than replacing it silently with later photographs.
Practical identification-view checklist
Use this checklist after capture, not only before it. The final review is where missing undersides, unreadable codes, clipped edges and mislinked files are most often discovered.
Object-level identification
- The entire object and its recognisable face are visible.
- The reverse and any identity-bearing side, top, base or interior are recorded.
- Edges are not clipped and the object's shape is represented without avoidable distortion.
- Nothing obscures the object or confuses it with another item.
Variant-level identification
- Maker, publisher, edition statement and production identifiers are readable.
- Product, catalogue, date, country, language and logo variations are shown where relevant.
- Printing, mould, matrix, runout, barcode or packaging revision evidence is captured.
- Observed features are described separately from conclusions such as 'first printing' or 'factory error'.
Copy-level identification
- Serial, certification or inventory numbers are recorded where present.
- Signatures, inscriptions, repairs, labels and distinctive irregularities are visible.
- At least one feature could help distinguish this copy from another example of the same variant.
- Image editing has not removed or disguised the visual fingerprint.
Set and record integrity
- The whole set is shown together and important components are individually identifiable.
- Packaging, inserts, accessories and empty fitted spaces are recorded where they affect identity or completeness.
- Each file is linked to the correct owned-item record with a meaningful view name and capture date.
- The original or master file is retained independently of thumbnails and web derivatives.
The central principle
The strongest identification photograph is not necessarily the photograph that makes the collectible look most valuable. It is the photograph that removes uncertainty.
A good set of identification views should allow a knowledgeable stranger to move from “This appears to be the same kind of object” to “This is the same product, the same variant and, where possible, the same individual copy.”
