Changes Over Time

A photograph records how a collectible appeared at one moment. A controlled sequence of photographs can record its history: deterioration, accidental damage, repair, restoration, component loss, substitution, movement and changes in attribution that memory alone cannot reconstruct.

The value does not come from simply taking more photographs. It comes from making later images comparable with earlier ones and linking every image to a date, object, event and written observation. A brighter lamp, altered angle or stronger phone processing can make an unchanged object look different; poor photography can also conceal genuine change. Long-term documentation is therefore controlled comparison photography.

The governing test

A sequence is useful only when differences between the images can be separated from differences in the object.

Every decision on this page follows from that test: what to photograph, when to repeat it, how to control the setup, what to write down and how cautiously to describe the result.

Chapter 1

Change is broader than deterioration

Collectors often think of change as damage, but a photographic history may record any alteration in physical state, composition, intervention or meaning. These categories overlap, and a single event may belong to several at once.

Material change

Deterioration

Fading, yellowing, corrosion, cracking, warping, delamination, adhesive failure, staining, mould, pest activity, abrasion, plastic change and other visible consequences of material instability or environment.

Incident change

Sudden damage

Drops, crushing, flooding, smoke, mishandling, poor packing, transport or emergency movement can create a sharp break in the object’s condition history.

Deliberate change

Human intervention

Cleaning, repair, conservation, restoration, reframing, rebinding, retouching, replacement, encapsulation or mounting may improve stability or appearance while changing the object’s physical evidence.

Inventory change

Completeness and configuration

Inserts, accessories, weapons, sleeves, paperwork, certificates, packaging or detachable elements may be removed, returned, substituted or rearranged even where the main object remains stable.

Interpretive change

Identity and attribution

Later research may reveal replaced labels, altered signatures, substituted parts, recreated seals or assembled objects. Earlier photographs may become authentication and provenance evidence.

The crack that changes meaning

Imagine a boxed game whose lower hinge shows a short split in 2028. The image alone proves only that a split was visible when that photograph was made. The surrounding sequence determines what the image means.

Five histories, five different judgements

It was already present and unchanged in the 2024 acquisition baseline.

It first appears immediately after a house move.

It lengthens slightly in each annual comparison.

It appears after a fall and is accompanied by displacement.

It is visible only under raking light and absent in matched diffuse views.

The physical feature is the same type of feature in every case. The evidential meaning is different because chronology, capture method and event context are different. A time-based record converts an isolated visual fact into a history.

Chapter 2

Build the first reliable baseline

The baseline is the first systematic record against which later images will be judged. It should be created when the object enters the collection and renewed whenever a major transition creates a new reference state.

Good moments for a baseline

  • At acquisition or transfer of custody.
  • Before long-term storage, display, lending or shipping.
  • Before treatment, cleaning, restoration or encapsulation.
  • Immediately after treatment, rehousing or stabilisation.
  • When a new risk, vulnerable material or suspect feature is discovered.

What the baseline must preserve

  • Identity and overall appearance.
  • All sides, edges, interiors and hidden surfaces that can be safely viewed.
  • Components, packaging, paperwork and arrangement.
  • Labels, marks, signatures, serial numbers and construction details.
  • Known damage, vulnerable areas and existing interventions.

Overall and detail views are a pair, not alternatives

Overall views establish identity, shape, completeness and context. Detail views show cracks, stains, corrosion, lifting, repairs, marks and other small features. A detail without location becomes a mystery close-up; an overall view without detail may fail to show the change at all.

Chapter 3

Choose when to photograph again

A useful programme combines scheduled, event-driven and condition-triggered photography. Frequency should follow risk, not the desire to give every object an equal number of images.

Scheduled

Repeat at planned intervals

Annual reviews, six-month checks, insurance revaluation, collection audits or pre- and post-display sessions are useful for gradual change and regular accountability.

Event-driven

Record a known transition

Acquisition, relocation, shipping, loan, unpacking, incident, treatment, sale or custody transfer creates a dated before-and-after boundary in the object’s history.

Condition-triggered

Respond to a suspected change

A new spot, lifting edge, sticky surface, increased warp, unusual residue or suspected fading should trigger matched documentation and proportionate follow-up.

Higher re-photography priority

Active change, unstable materials, regular display, environmental fluctuation, frequent handling, travel, recent treatment, known storage risk, high significance or a specific condition issue under observation.

Lower re-photography priority

Stable objects in controlled storage, rarely handled, with no known active deterioration and a recent comprehensive baseline. Inspection still matters, but repeated unpacking should not become the greater risk.

Chapter 4

Make repeatability part of the record

The camera setup is not background information. It determines whether later differences can be interpreted. Record enough of the method that the view can be recreated by you or by someone else.

Fix the camera geometry

Use the same camera or camera module, lens, distance, height and angle. For flat objects, keep the camera perpendicular. Mark tripod or copy-stand positions and avoid switching between wide, normal and telephoto views without recording it.

Fix the object orientation

A small rotation changes reflections, texture, dent shape, crack visibility and edge alignment. Use a measured stage, positioning guides or a simple setup diagram showing where and how the object was placed.

Control the lighting

Maintain a repeatable diffuse-light record as the primary comparison view. Additional raking, transmitted or reflective views may reveal specific features, but their direction and geometry must also be repeatable.

Control exposure and colour handling

Automatic systems can brighten, saturate, sharpen or warm a changed object and partly conceal the difference. Use fixed white balance and exposure where practical, include neutral or colour references where colour matters, and retain the unedited original.

Match framing and scale

Place the same edges and features in the same image positions. A scale belongs in the same plane as the feature being measured. Matched framing enables credible side-by-side, overlay, flicker and measurement-based comparisons.

Diagnostic framework

Judge change along several axes

“Better” or “worse” is too blunt for a defensible condition record. Describe the dimension in which the object appears to have changed.

Extent

Has the affected area become larger, longer, wider, more branched or more widely distributed? Use scale and matched framing where measurement matters.

Severity

Has a faint feature become deeper, darker, more raised, more detached, more powdery or more structurally disruptive? Lighting must remain comparable.

Activity

Does the sequence suggest continuing progression, intermittent change or apparent stability? Photography may reveal a pattern but does not always identify the cause.

Configuration

Have components, fasteners, labels, inserts, supports or packaging relationships changed, even though the visible surface condition appears similar?

Intervention

What has been cleaned, filled, replaced, retouched, coated, mounted, removed or reconstructed, and can the original state still be distinguished from later work?

Context

Did the change follow display, travel, storage relocation, treatment, an environmental incident or a custody transfer? Chronology gives the image evidential meaning.

Evidence and meaning

Separate seeing from explaining

Photographs may outlive the collector who made them. Future readers need to know which statements describe visible evidence, which offer a possible explanation and which assert a cause that requires independent proof.

Observation

A brown irregular stain measuring approximately 18 × 12 mm is visible near the lower-right corner.

Interpretation

The stain may be associated with earlier water exposure.

Unsupported conclusion

The object was damaged by a leaking roof in 1998.

The final statement may be true, but the photograph cannot establish it alone. It needs corroborating documentation, testimony, incident records or a reliable chain of custody. Precise observation preserves evidence; cautious interpretation preserves credibility.

Myth versus reality

A visual difference is not automatically object change

Myth

If two photographs look different, the collectible must have changed.

Reality

The camera, light, support, processing, compression or temporary capture state may have changed. Confirm suspected change through matched images, direct examination and, where safe, a second lighting arrangement.

Camera and lens changes

Different phones, lenses and computational processing alter perspective, colour, sharpening, noise reduction and dynamic range. A camera upgrade can imitate physical change.

Lighting and reflection

Raking light may reveal a scratch that disappears under diffuse light. Reflections can resemble loss, staining or gloss change. Lighting geometry must be recorded and repeated.

Automatic correction

Auto exposure, white balance, HDR, saturation and scene enhancement may compensate for fading or exaggerate contrast. Retain originals and avoid undocumented filters.

Background and support

A warm, dark or reflective background can influence colour and exposure. Different supports may flatten, compress or relax an object and alter its apparent shape.

Compression and display

Messaging services, websites and screenshots resize, sharpen, compress and strip metadata. Compare the underlying master files, not their platform copies.

Temporary capture state

Temperature, moisture, enclosure, recent unfolding, pressure and viewing through plastic or glass can create differences that are real at capture but not permanent condition change.

Chapter 5

Photograph different forms of change differently

The primary diffuse record should remain stable, but the feature being monitored determines which additional views are useful.

Fading and colour shift

Use the same controlled light, fixed exposure and white balance, a colour reference and minimally processed files. Where possible, include both exposed and protected areas in the same frame.

Cracks and splits

Record overall location, perpendicular detail, raking-light view, scale, endpoints, orientation and date. Compare length, width, branching, lifting, displacement and associated loss.

Warping and deformation

Use side profiles, low-angle views, straight reference edges, grid backgrounds, silhouettes or measured gaps. Camera and support positions must remain fixed.

Flaking and surface loss

Combine diffuse location views with raking light for relief and lifting. Photograph before movement where loose material may be displaced by handling.

Corrosion and tarnish

Record colour, distribution, texture, powdering, joints, fasteners and staining on adjacent packaging. Reflection control is essential because metal appearance changes dramatically with light geometry.

Mould and biological growth

Record overall distribution, front and reverse, adjacent packaging, storage context, discovery date and environmental readings where available. Appearance alone may not show whether growth is active.

Adhesive, foam and plastic change

Monitor yellowing, ooze, staining, shrinkage, lifting, residue transfer, gloss and deformation. Composite objects may change at different rates across bonded materials.

Completeness and substitution

Repeat both assembled views and component inventories. Record empty cavities, packaging layers, identifiers and replacements so absence or substitution is not mistaken for material deterioration.

Specialist threshold

Use specialist lighting as supplementary evidence

Specialist views can reveal features invisible in standard lighting, but they are more sensitive to setup and interpretation. They should supplement, not replace, the matched normal-light record.

Raking light

Surface relief and deformation

Useful for dents, cockling, raised fibres, scratches, planar distortion, lifting paint and embossed detail. Record the light direction because moving it changes apparent severity.

Transmitted light

Thin and translucent structures

Useful for tears, losses, thinning, repairs, watermarks and density variation in paper or similar materials. Limit unnecessary exposure for light-sensitive objects.

Specular light

Gloss and coating differences

Controlled reflections may show abrasion, retouching, fingerprints, coating irregularity or polished repairs that diffuse light suppresses.

UV or infrared

Specialist examination

These techniques may reveal hidden differences but do not automatically identify a material or prove authenticity. Label the method clearly and seek qualified interpretation.

Chapter 6

Turn image sessions into a change log

A photograph does not explain when a feature was first noticed, what happened since the previous session or what action followed. A concise change log gives the sequence structure and keeps observation separate from decision-making.

“Appears unchanged” is usually more defensible than “has not changed.” Every comparison is limited by image quality, visibility and the conditions under which the photographs were made.

Comparison tools

Choose the method that fits the question

Side-by-side comparison

The most accessible method. Match image scale and framing. Useful for colour shift, component loss, major cracks, deformation and stain growth.

Flicker comparison

Alternate rapidly between aligned images so movement becomes prominent. Useful for edge movement, crack growth, changing loss boundaries and altered labels.

Overlay comparison

Layer one image over another with partial transparency. Useful for shape change, warping, shrinkage and repair movement, but unreliable when perspective differs.

Annotated comparison

Use arrows, outlines or numbered zones on derivative copies. Keep originals untouched: annotation is interpretation layered on evidence, not a substitute for it.

Automated difference detection

Image subtraction and software analysis can highlight change, but also react to lighting, alignment, noise and processing. Treat output as a screening aid, not proof.

Evidence hierarchy

Not all sequences deserve the same confidence

Judge the record before judging the object. A dramatic difference supported by weak files may be less persuasive than a subtle difference in a controlled, connected sequence.

Strong

Controlled, dated and connected

Identifiable object, dated originals, repeatable setup, consistent lighting, scale or references, written condition notes, unedited masters and clear custody or event context.

Moderate

Useful but imperfect

Good coverage and reliable dates, but some inconsistency in angle, lighting, scale, equipment or written context. Change may be visible, yet conclusions need qualification.

Weak

Detached or poorly controlled

Screenshots, thumbnails, unknown dates, edited platform images, inconsistent views, missing identifiers or files separated from the object record.

Misleading

Conditions manufacture the difference

Different lighting or framing exaggerates a before-and-after result, defects are digitally removed, surrounding damage is cropped away, or dates and treatment stages are wrongly represented.

Chapter 7

Preserve the record as carefully as the image

The visual history is itself a collection asset. It loses evidential value when files are renamed, overwritten, detached from records, compressed through platforms or left on a single phone.

Capture master

The file produced by the camera, retained without destructive alteration wherever possible.

Documentation master

A high-quality working record with stable metadata, colour handling and transparent edit history.

Published

Access derivative

A resized or compressed copy for apps, email, reports, sales, insurance summaries or public display. It must never replace the master.

A filename should carry chronology and meaning

A practical structure is objectID_date_event_view_sequence. Event terms may include acquisition, annual-review, pre-loan, post-loan, pre-treatment, during-treatment, post-treatment, incident or monitoring. Names such as “new photo,” “best one” or “after edit 2” do not preserve history.

Context should survive in several places

  • Collection database or object record.
  • File name and controlled folder structure.
  • Embedded metadata where supported.
  • Visible identifier or reference frame where appropriate.
  • Related condition, treatment, loan or incident record.

The record needs preservation controls

  • More than one copy on separate devices.
  • At least one copy away from the main collection location.
  • Routine backup and file-opening checks.
  • Stable formats, migration planning and access control.
  • Originals retained when adjusted derivatives are created.

Action hierarchy

A practical collector workflow

The aim is a proportionate system that works at acquisition, during ordinary ownership, when a problem appears and after intervention.

At acquisition or first baseline

  • Assign or confirm the object identifier.
  • Retain seller or auction photographs as acquisition evidence.
  • Create your own controlled overall, reverse, side, edge, interior and component views.
  • Record existing damage, vulnerable materials, packaging and identification marks.
  • Save original files, link them to the object record and create a separate backup.

During ownership

  • Inspect according to risk rather than an arbitrary equal schedule for every object.
  • Repeat fixed views and known monitoring points using the same setup.
  • Record display, storage, environmental, handling or custody events since the last session.
  • Add new observations without deleting or replacing earlier evidence.
  • Use event-driven images after travel, display, incidents, treatment or major rehousing.

When change is suspected

  • Avoid unnecessary handling or cleaning before recording the state found.
  • Photograph in situ where location or storage context may matter.
  • Create an overall view, locating view and close detail with scale where appropriate.
  • Compare against the latest reliable matched image and describe uncertainty explicitly.
  • Escalate active, hazardous or structurally significant change to an appropriate specialist.

After treatment or restoration

  • Retain the complete pre-treatment record.
  • Document work in progress, removed material and replacement components.
  • Create matched post-treatment views rather than only attractive reveal images.
  • Record who performed the work, what was done and when.
  • Schedule later monitoring where treatment outcome or material stability remains uncertain.

Custody and disclosure

Use matched sequences at moments of dispute or transfer

Time-based photography is particularly valuable when responsibility, condition or completeness may later be questioned. The closer the images are to the event, the stronger their chronology.

Loans and shipping

Create matched sets before packing, during packing, in the packed configuration, at unpacking, before and after display, and on return. Link them to handlers, dates, locations and written checks.

Insurance and claims

Sequences can support possession, identity, pre-loss condition, completeness and damage severity, but must sit alongside purchase evidence, valuations, incident records and repair estimates.

Treatment and restoration disclosure

Photograph removed and replacement pieces, fills, adhesives, retouching, recreated labels, fasteners, seals and reconstructed packaging. Record who changed what and why.

Sale and ownership transfer

Provide a current full-condition set and disclose material changes, replacements and treatment history. Earlier images can protect both buyer and seller when chronology is clear.

Failure modes

What weakens a long-term record

Photographing only after a problem

Without an earlier baseline, it may be impossible to establish whether damage is new, progressing or merely newly noticed.

Replacing old photographs

A new image should extend the history, not overwrite it. Earlier evidence remains valuable even when quality or condition has changed.

Using attractive views only

Backs, edges, undersides, interiors, packaging and hidden joints often change first and are frequently omitted from sale-style photography.

Treating seller images as the baseline

Listing photographs may be selective, processed, incomplete or undated. Retain them, but create a controlled baseline of your own.

Recording damage without location or scale

A close-up can prove that a feature was photographed while giving no reliable way to place or measure it later.

Treating absence from an image as absence from the object

Lighting, focus, resolution, angle, obstruction and compression can all prevent a feature from appearing.

Comparing edited with unedited files

Marketplace processing, colour correction and contrast changes may create or conceal apparent condition differences.

Monitoring until monitoring causes harm

Fragile objects should not be repeatedly unpacked, flexed or repositioned merely to satisfy an arbitrary schedule.

The five questions every comparison should answer

  1. What object is this?
  2. When was the image made?
  3. How was it photographed?
  4. What condition, component or feature does it show?
  5. What appears to have changed since the preceding reliable record?

Central lesson

Photographs become history when the sequence is interpretable

Changes-over-time photography is not a volume exercise. The strongest record is chronological, repeatable, linked to written observations and honest about its limits. It preserves what the object looked like, what happened around it, what was altered and how confidently later differences can be judged.

When those conditions are met, photography becomes more than illustration. It supports care, authentication, provenance, insurance, valuation, restoration disclosure and responsible transfer to the next owner.
