Numerical Scales

A numerical grading scale converts a condition judgement into a recognised number such as 7, 9.8, MS-65 or 66 EPQ. The number helps collectors compare examples, communicate condition, organise records and analyse sales, but it is not a direct measurement like weight or length. It is a coded conclusion reached by applying a named standard to observed evidence.

The number becomes meaningful only when the collector knows what was graded, which scale was used, which defects were found, how the system treats manufacturing flaws, alteration and completeness, and how confidently the grade can be defended. Numerical systems do not remove disagreement. They organise it into defined bands and boundaries.

A collector who starts with the large number on a label can mistake a conclusion for evidence. Read the assessment from the object outward.

Condition evidence

Wear, tears, scratches, handling, fading, centring, surface marks, structural weakness, missing material, repairs and other visible or discoverable features belong to the object. This is the evidence from which grading begins.

The chosen system decides which defects matter, how they are weighted, which grade bands exist, what limits the next grade and whether alteration, restoration or incompleteness changes grade eligibility.

The number

The numerical grade compresses the assessment into a recognised position. It is useful shorthand, but it cannot show every defect, evidence gap, qualifier or judgement that produced it.

Collector scenario: three objects, all called 8 out of 10

One seller uses 8 to mean excellent display condition with light visible wear. Another means complete, usable and better than average for age. A specialist service reserves 8 for an object meeting written limits on corners, surface, centring and alteration. The number is identical, but the claims are not.

Before accepting any numbered grade, ask: whose scale, for which category, covering which components, under what evidence, and with what qualifiers? A bare number can compare only objects that genuinely share the same grading language.

There is no universal numerical scale for collectibles. Different fields developed systems around their own materials, defect patterns, market needs and grading traditions.

How to read it

A 10 from one service is not automatically equivalent to a 10 from another. The company, scale version, category and any subgrades or qualifiers remain part of the grade.

How to read it
Values such as 9.2, 9.4, 9.6 and 9.8 are named categories within the convention. They are not laboratory measurements accurate to one decimal place.
Collector caution
The scale often expands near the top because small differences become commercially important. It may omit apparently logical numbers because only defined grade points exist.

How to read it
A grade such as MS-65 is a named Mint State category governed by standards for marks, lustre, strike and eye appeal. It is not merely 65 percent or a generic 65 out of 70.
Collector caution
The prefix is essential. MS-65, PF-65, AU-58 and a bare 65 do not express the same state, and problem items may receive qualified or details-style outcomes rather than an ordinary numerical grade.

Interpretation

Why a numerical scale is usually ordinal

Most collectible scales reliably express order, but not mathematical distance. This single distinction prevents several common grading errors.

Ordinal, not arithmetic

Higher means better preserved—not proportionally better

A grade of 8 ranks above 7, but it is not necessarily one equal unit better. An 8 is not twice as good as a 4, and the visual distance from 9 to 10 may be much smaller than the distance from 3 to 4.

Uneven granularity

The scale can compress and expand

Low grades may combine many severe defects into broad bands, while high grades divide tiny differences into closely spaced categories. This is a convention shaped by collecting practice, not proof of finer physical measurement.

Defined top category

The highest grade is not metaphysical perfection

Terms such as Perfect, Pristine, Gem Mint or grade 70 mean that the object met a published top-grade standard under a particular examination process. They do not promise the absence of every defect at every magnification or guarantee future stability.

A band, not a clone

Equal grades can look different

Two objects may satisfy the same numerical band while differing in defect type, defect location, colour, centring, wear pattern and eye appeal. Collectors still distinguish strong, average and weak examples for the grade.

Age and rarity provide context—not extra grade points

A 150-year-old object can be unusually well preserved for its issue while still receiving a modest absolute grade. A rare object can be the finest known example and remain heavily worn. Age affects survival expectations; rarity affects desirability and value. Neither should erase defects or inflate physical condition.

Reading the label

The number rarely tells the whole story

Prefixes, designations, qualifiers and subgrades perform different jobs. Ignoring them can turn a technically correct label into a misleading collector interpretation.

State or production type

Prefixes

Prefixes such as MS, PF or PR, AU and VF can identify the state to which the number belongs. Removing the prefix may remove the meaning of the grade itself.

Specific recognised attribute

Suffixes and designations

Paper quality, colour, strike, prooflike surfaces, page quality, autograph status and similar designations can describe qualities that the base number does not fully express.

Problem or exception status

Qualifiers and details outcomes

Cleaning, trimming, restoration, repairs, missing parts, recolouring or other issues may cap the grade, qualify it or make the object ineligible for an ordinary straight numerical grade.

Separate condition axes

Subgrades

Centring, corners, edges and surface may be assessed separately. The overall grade is not necessarily their simple average: weighting, lowest-axis caps and whole-object judgement may apply.

Grade ceiling: when appearance and eligibility separate

An object may retain detail or surface appearance associated with a high grade yet carry a cleaning, trimming, restoration, repair, recolouring, missing-part or alteration problem that caps the result or removes it from ordinary numerical grading. Apparent preservation and grade eligibility are not always the same.

Composite objects

One number can conceal several condition stories

Boxed games, toys with accessories, books with jackets, records with sleeves, models with packaging and cartridge-based games often contain components that age differently.

Before accepting an overall grade, establish its scope. Does 8.0 describe only the main item, the complete package, an average, the weakest component or a company-specific composite method? A useful record separates the axes before it compresses them.

Boundary judgement

Grade from above and below

Borderline grading becomes more disciplined when the collector identifies both the strongest grade clearly exceeded and the specific evidence that prevents the next grade.

Lower boundary

What grade does the object clearly exceed?

Identify the broad condition band first, compare against reference examples and confirm that the object exceeds every essential requirement of the lower category.

Upper boundary

What defect prevents the next grade?

Name the limiting corner touch, stress line, mark, fold, centring issue, repair, weak component or other criterion. If no defensible limit can be stated, the exact number may be too confident.

Reference examples help control personal drift, but they remain anchors rather than automatic answers. A productive sequence is to identify the broad band, compare with known examples, test the next grade, record the limiting defects and then assign a final number or range.

Evidence quality

Match numerical precision to grading confidence

A scale may offer precise labels even when the available evidence does not support precise placement. Confidence should travel with the grade.

High confidence

The number is well supported

The object has been examined in hand, all relevant surfaces and components are accessible, lighting is controlled, the standard is known, and authenticity, originality and completeness questions have been resolved as far as the grade requires.

Moderate confidence

The grade is plausible but bounded

Good photographs or partial access support a condition band, but packaging, framing, inaccessible interiors, close grade boundaries or unresolved minor surfaces could still change the final placement.

Low confidence

A precise number would overstate the evidence

Blurred images, reflections, colour distortion, one-sided views, sealed packaging, hidden components, possible restoration or unknown completeness make an exact grade unreliable. A range or descriptive assessment is more honest.

Better remote wording

Estimated at approximately 7.0–7.5 from the available photographs; rear-surface condition and internal completeness are unverified.

This is more useful than an unsupported 7.5 because it preserves the condition estimate, the evidence boundary and the reason the conclusion may change.

Use the grade in the right decision order

The label number should not dominate acquisition, valuation or record keeping. Work through the underlying questions in sequence.

Identity and authenticity

Is this the genuine object and the expected issue, edition or variant?

A counterfeit, fantasy piece or misidentified variant should not acquire credibility merely because a large grade number appears beside it.

Originality and alteration

Has it been cleaned, trimmed, restored, recoloured, repaired or reconstructed?

An object can retain strong visible detail while being ineligible for the ordinary grade that its appearance first suggests.

Completeness

Are all required components present, correct and original?

A numerical grade for the main object does not automatically describe a box, dust jacket, manual, insert, accessory or complete set.

What wear, damage, deterioration and structural weakness can actually be established?

Grade from evidence rather than the label, seller confidence or apparent rarity. Note inaccessible surfaces and internal areas separately.

Does the number match the applicable standard and the observed defects?

Ask what grade is clearly exceeded, what next grade is being tested and which limiting feature prevents advancement.

What information sits beside the number?

Read the complete label or record: prefixes, suffixes, page or paper quality, details status, restoration notation, subgrades and other qualifications may materially change interpretation.

Is this a strong, average or weak example of the numerical band?

Defect location and visual balance can make two technically equal grades feel very different to collectors.

Population, rarity and price

Does the premium make sense after condition has been understood?

Population at and above grade, demand, rarity and service reputation can amplify price differences, but they should not be allowed to rewrite the physical grade.

Market pressure

When the number starts doing more than describing condition

Recognised thresholds can acquire financial gravity. That makes evidence stronger—not less important.

Population at grade

Population data can show how many certified examples occupy each grade and whether condition rarity may justify a premium.

Treat the figures as graded-service populations, not total surviving supply. Resubmissions, ungraded stock, separate company censuses and future finds can all alter interpretation.

Threshold premiums and regrading

When one step creates a large price jump, sellers may optimise descriptions around the threshold and owners may seek regrading for a marginal increase.

The financial consequence does not prove the boundary is false, but it makes a named limiting defect, reliable evidence and independent judgement more important.

Documentation

Record enough to make the number intelligible later

A collection record containing only “7” loses most of the information needed for future comparison, sale, insurance, regrading or inheritance.

  • A high-value threshold depends on a very small difference that cannot be resolved from available evidence.
  • The object is sealed, framed, fragile, inaccessible or composed of hidden components that materially affect grade.
