Grade Boundaries and Thresholds
A grading boundary is the dividing line between neighbouring grades. A threshold is the minimum condition an item must satisfy to enter or retain a grade. These are not natural lines visible in the object itself: they are decision rules imposed on a continuous range of wear, damage, manufacture, originality, completeness and visual quality.
That distinction explains why two almost identical collectibles can receive different labels. One may sit just inside the tolerance of the higher grade while the other crosses a hard rule, accumulates too many minor defects or lacks one required quality. Good grading therefore asks not only which grade looks plausible, but what evidence places the object on one side of the boundary.

Two collectors agree on the object but disagree on the grade
Both see sharp corners, strong gloss and only slight edge wear. They also see one small crease. One calls the item an 8 because most of it presents at that level. The other calls it a 7 because the chosen scale treats any crease as grade-controlling.
Their disagreement is not mainly about whether the item is attractive. It is about how the scale aggregates evidence. Is the grade an overall impression, a weighted judgement, a weakest-component result or a system with explicit caps? Until that is clear, arguing over the number will not resolve the boundary.
Orientation
Condition is continuous; grades are discrete
A collectible does not physically transform from one grade into another at a universally visible point. It accumulates changes, while the grading scale divides those changes into categories.
Corners soften gradually. Edge wear spreads. Gloss reduces. A scratch becomes more visible as its depth, position or lighting changes. The scale then places a label on the combined evidence. Near a boundary, the physical difference may be slight even though the formal label changes completely.
Numerical scales can make those steps look mathematical, but most are ordinal rather than evenly measured. The difference between 9.6 and 9.8 may be much narrower than the difference between 5.0 and 5.2. At the top, the decision may turn on one barely permissible imperfection; lower down, a single grade may contain a much broader range of wear.

Collectors need to know whether a boundary is governed by a fixed exclusion, an interpretive tolerance or both.
Hard boundary
A stated condition decides eligibility
A hard boundary is crossed when a defined fact is present or absent: a crease, missing component, opened seal, circulation wear, restoration, trimming or a centring tolerance outside the permitted range. The rest of the item may be excellent, but the rule still controls the result.
Soft boundary
Degree and visual effect require judgement
Terms such as very slight wear, minor marks, strong eye appeal or moderate fading cannot always be reduced to a measurement. The grader must decide whether the combined evidence remains consistent with the higher grade.
Hybrid boundary
The item must pass rules and still present strongly
Most mature systems combine both approaches. An item may first need to avoid disqualifying defects and then demonstrate the positive qualities expected at the grade: sharpness, colour, finish, centring, structure or eye appeal.

The decisive issue is not simply the number of defects. It is how each feature changes the promise made by the grade.
Single threshold defect

- Together they create distributed wear and a weaker overall presentation.

- The item may cross the boundary even though no single defect is decisive.
Location-sensitive threshold
- Observable evidence
- A scratch passes through a face, title, signature or central design.
- What it means
- Its focal position makes it more distracting than an equal mark in a quiet margin.

- The defect may receive greater weight and prevent the higher grade.
Visibility threshold
- Observable evidence
- A surface line is visible only under angled light, while another mark is obvious at normal viewing distance.
- What it means
- Inspection conditions form part of the evidence. Not every detectable feature has the same grading significance.

- The standard should identify whether unaided view, raking light or magnification governs the decision.
Component judgement
Weakest component, weighting and compensation
Many objects are graded across surface, edges, corners, colour, structure, centring, completeness, originality and eye appeal. Systems differ in how those components combine.
Weakest-link behaviour
If one component is far weaker than the others, the overall grade may be capped near that component. A card with excellent corners, edges and surface but severe off-centring may not average into the top grade. A boxed object with a high-grade contents item but missing paperwork may require separate condition and completeness records.
Weighted holistic behaviour
Other systems allow limited compensation. Strong colour or eye appeal may help at a soft boundary, while focal damage, structural weakness or alteration receives greater weight. The result is still evidence-based, but not produced by a simple lowest-score formula.
When the method is unclear, ask four questions: does one weak area control the whole grade; how far may stronger areas compensate; are some components formally weighted; and is the final grade calculated or holistically assigned?
State before quality
Some boundaries change the object’s grading state
A small amount of wear can cross a more important categorical boundary than a larger amount of damage within the same state.
Circulated / uncirculated: genuine wear may move a coin out of Mint State even if it otherwise looks cleaner than a heavily marked uncirculated example.
Sealed / opened: breaking an original seal changes the item’s state even if the contents remain unused.
Complete / incomplete: a missing component may cap the grade, trigger a separate completeness designation or make the object ineligible for the normal scale.
Original / altered: cleaning, trimming, repainting, recolouring, replacement parts or restoration may move the item onto a qualified or details-grading track.
State first; quality within that state second.
Context and examination
The same visible feature may sit on different sides of a boundary
Manufacturing features and post-production damage are not automatically equivalent. A print dot, weak strike, bindery tear, mould line or factory paint variation may be tolerated, separately classified or judged against what is typical for the issue. A later scratch, crease, chip, stain or repair usually carries a different meaning because it records subsequent change.
Inspection method also matters. A defect obvious at normal distance is not the same as one revealed only by raking light or specified magnification. Remote grading adds another threshold: whether the available photographs are sufficient to decide at all. Missing reverse views, reflections, sealed packaging or hidden interiors may justify a range or withheld grade rather than forced precision.
Borderline judgement
Borderline is not the same as uncertain
Borderline
The item has been adequately inspected and lies close to a known dividing line. Reasonable graders may differ because a defect’s severity, cumulative impact or eye appeal is difficult to classify. Useful language includes high-end 8, low-end 9, 8/9 or 8 with moderate confidence.
Uncertain
The evidence is insufficient to decide. The surface is hidden, photographs omit key views, reflections obscure marks or originality cannot be assessed. The honest output is a range, a maximum possible grade, a provisional assessment or no grade.
Practical method
A defensible boundary decision process
The sequence below keeps observation, eligibility, judgement and documentation separate enough to be reviewed later.
Establish the grading context
Name the collectible type, scale, grading authority or house standard, and the inspection conditions. A boundary has no stable meaning outside the rules that create it.
- Which scale is being applied?
- Is the standard current or historical?
- What viewing conditions does it assume?
Confirm authenticity and grade eligibility
Some systems require authenticity before condition grading and treat alteration, cleaning, restoration or incompleteness as a separate eligibility question rather than a small deduction.
- Is the item genuine?
- Is it eligible for an ordinary numerical grade?
- Does it require a qualifier, details grade or restored designation?
Identify the condition state
State boundaries can outweigh small quality differences. Circulated versus uncirculated, sealed versus opened, used versus unused, original versus restored and complete versus incomplete are categorical changes before finer grading begins.
Record observable facts before interpretation
Describe each material feature by type, severity, extent, location, visibility and probable cause. Do not begin with the desired grade and work backwards to justify it.
Apply hard thresholds and grade caps
Ask whether any fact excludes the upper grade, limits the maximum grade, changes the grading track or requires a separate designation. Serious localised defects are not necessarily averaged away by broad areas of excellent preservation.
Test both adjacent grades
A defensible decision explains both sides of the boundary. Ask why the item is not in the lower grade and what specifically prevents the higher grade.

Evaluate cumulative impact and weighting
Consider whether several minor defects collectively exceed the tolerance of the grade, and whether focal location, structural effect, originality or visual distraction gives one feature more weight than another.
Use eye appeal as a controlled modifier
Eye appeal can resolve a soft boundary or explain why technically similar items present differently. It should not erase a disqualifying defect or substitute attraction for condition evidence.
State confidence and evidence limits
A borderline item has been inspected and sits near a known threshold. An uncertain item lacks enough evidence to place it confidently. Use a range, provisional conclusion or no grade when the evidence cannot support precision.
Preserve the deciding rationale
Record the boundary considered, the controlling facts and the confidence level. This makes the grade reviewable when standards, market practice or your own judgement later change.

Questions that often distinguish descriptive grades
These questions show how a boundary can be expressed as a decision rather than a vague adjective.

This is a reasoning framework, not a universal scale. Every category must define its own permitted defects, state changes and inspection conditions.
Documentation
Record the decision, not only the label
A bare grade tells a future reader where the object landed. A boundary note explains why.

Deciding evidence: Very light whitening on two rear corners and one shallow surface line visible under angled light. No crease, staining or structural damage.
Reasoning: The defects are too noticeable for grade 9 but remain isolated enough for grade 8.
Confidence: Moderate to high
- Name the scale and, where relevant, the authority or version.
- Identify the feature that prevented the higher grade.
- Record qualifiers for restoration, cleaning, incompleteness or replacement parts separately.
- Preserve photographs that show the deciding evidence under appropriate lighting.
- State whether the conclusion was in-hand, remote, provisional or specialist-certified.
Market pressure
A small physical difference can create a large economic cliff edge
High-grade boundaries often carry disproportionate premiums because collectors value population scarcity, registry position, prestige and liquidity. A visually slight difference between two adjacent labels can therefore produce a much larger difference in price.
That market effect does not enlarge the physical condition difference and must not influence which side of the threshold is chosen. It does, however, increase the incentive for pressing, conservation, resubmission, crossover attempts and grade shopping. Valuable boundaries require better evidence, more transparent rationale and greater caution.

Practical thresholds can move as standards, technology, leadership, market expectations and familiarity with an issue change. Older and newer grades may not be directly equivalent.

Common mistakes at grade boundaries
Treating the grade as an average
A severe crease, tear, missing component or alteration may control the result. Excellent performance elsewhere does not guarantee a mathematical middle grade.
Counting defects without weighting them
Five tiny marks are not automatically worse than one tear. Type, severity, location, extent, visibility, structural consequence and effect on originality all matter.
Grading for age or rarity
Age explains why damage is common and rarity explains why a condition is desirable. Neither removes the observed defects. Absolute condition, age context and scarcity in grade should be recorded separately.
Confusing manufacture with later damage
A weak strike, print dot, mould line or factory fold may be treated differently from wear, scratching, fading or repair. Identify origin before applying the threshold.
Importing a boundary from another system
A 9 in one authority or category does not automatically equal a 9 elsewhere. Institutions differ in tolerances, weighting, qualifiers, subgrades and inspection methods.
Letting value pull the grade upward
A market premium at the next grade is a reason for stronger evidence, not generosity. Grade first; value afterwards.
