Domain-Specific Systems
A domain-specific grading system is a condition-assessment framework designed for one class of collectible, or for a closely related family of objects. It does more than replace words such as Fine, Excellent or Mint with a number. It defines what is examined, which defects matter, how those defects are weighted, when a grade must be capped, when a qualifier is required, and when the object falls outside ordinary numerical grading altogether.
This matters because collectibles do not fail, age or survive in the same way. A scratch on a coin, a crease in a card, a detached comic cover, a regummed stamp, a resealed toy blister and a replacement map in a boxed game are not equivalent defects. The grade only becomes intelligible when the collector knows the object type, item state, grading authority, scale, qualifiers and evidence on which it rests.
The governing principle
The same number can speak different grading languages
A 9 on a trading card is not automatically equivalent to a 9.0 comic, a translated ten-point toy grade, a coin presented on a ten-point framework, or an informal seller rating of nine out of ten. The symbols look comparable; the underlying questions are not.
Treat cross-domain grades as labels in different languages. Before comparing them, identify what each system was built to notice, what it excludes, and what additional conclusions sit beside the headline grade.
Why a universal scale breaks down
A universal one-to-ten scale is attractive because it appears to let every collectible sit on one common ladder. In practice, it removes the very context that makes the grade meaningful.

Different objects expose different evidence
A card presents two flat faces, edges and corners. A comic adds a spine, staples, many interior leaves and page attachment. A boxed toy adds a primary object, accessories, packaging, seals and inserts. A game may also involve function, software media and internal corrosion.
The assessor is not merely seeing more or fewer defects. The assessor is examining a different object architecture.
Interpretation
Different fields rank defects differently
Centring can dominate a card or stamp grade. Strike quality and lustre matter to coins. A missing coupon can change the grading category of a comic. A broken seal can remove a game or toy from factory-sealed status even if the packaging still displays well.
A universal number hides this hierarchy and can make a serious defect look like an ordinary deduction.

One number can conceal exclusions
A grade may not reveal whether the object was opened, whether internal contents were inspected, whether function was tested, whether restoration is accepted, or whether the score applies to the main object, the packaging, or both.
Collector judgement
Ask what the system was designed to protect
Every system encodes a collecting culture. It may prioritise untouched originality, technical surface quality, completeness, display appeal, structural survival, working function or issue correctness. Those priorities should be visible before the grade is trusted.
Collector scenario: a card collector inspects a vintage boxed toy
The collector notices sharp corners, clean colour and a glossy surface. Those observations are useful, but a card-trained eye can miss the stronger questions for the toy: is the blister original, has it lifted from the card, is the seal continuous, is the figure correct for the packaging, are the accessories issue-matched, has the window yellowed, and has the package been rebuilt from donor parts?
The problem is not excessive strictness. It is that the wrong defect hierarchy is doing the judging. Domain-specific grading begins by choosing the right system before debating the grade.
What a complete grading system contains
The scale is only the visible surface. A serious system needs a defined scope and a repeatable route from observation to conclusion.

Scope definition
The system should state which objects, eras and production methods it covers; whether altered objects are eligible; whether sealed and loose objects use different rules; and whether internal inspection is performed.
A scale without a scope statement invites misuse.

Defined object state
The assessor must identify the state being graded: circulated or Mint State coin; hinged or never-hinged stamp; universal, qualified or restored comic; sealed, boxed or loose toy; sealed, complete-in-box or loose game.
The state determines which evidence and rules apply.

Controlled defect vocabulary
Terms such as hairline, spine tick, thin, bubble lift, paint rub or seal tear allow collectors to describe recurring defects consistently rather than relying on broad adjectives.

Defect hierarchy
The system distinguishes trivial, minor, moderate, major, critical and disqualifying defects. The same physical size of defect may occupy a different level in another collecting field.

Grade caps
Some defects impose a maximum possible grade: a crease on a card, detached cover on a comic, repaired tear on paper material, missing accessory in a toy, or broken seal on a supposedly sealed game.

Disqualifiers and no-grade outcomes
Altered, counterfeit, trimmed, recoloured, repaired, ineligible or unable-to-authenticate outcomes do not always mean worthless. They mean the object does not fit the ordinary numerical pathway.

Qualifiers and designations
Off-centre, restored, qualified, complete, incomplete, sealed, resealed, page quality, strike designations and verified signatures preserve facts the base score cannot carry.

Evidence and confidence
A defensible grade should be supported by photographs, notes, measurements, certification data and an explicit level of confidence, especially when inspection was remote or incomplete.
How established domains build different systems
The examples below are not conversion targets. They show how each field turns its own vulnerabilities, object states and collector priorities into a grading method.
Coins and medals
Often a 1-70 system, with prefixes, strike classes and feature designations.

- lustre, strike, colour and eye appeal
- problem-coin outcomes where a normal numerical grade is inappropriate
System lesson
A coin can retain strong detail yet be removed from ordinary straight grading because cleaning, tooling, corrosion or repair changes the grading category rather than merely lowering the score.
Trading cards
Commonly a proprietary 1-10 scale.

System lesson
A card may be genuine but receive an authentic-only or altered designation instead of a normal grade. Authentication and condition are related conclusions, not the same conclusion.
Comic books
Commonly a 0.5-10.0 scale with descriptive grade bands.

System lesson
A visually strong comic can carry a qualified grade because of one major exception, such as a missing coupon. The grade describes presentation subject to the stated exception.
Stamps
May combine adjectival grades with a numerical system extending to 100.

System lesson
Terms such as mint, unused, hinged and never hinged carry philatelic meanings. They cannot be imported from coins, cards or comics without losing essential information.

Systems differ for sealed, complete-in-box and loose objects.

System lesson
Cosmetic condition is not proof of function. A high-grade cartridge or disc can remain untested, internally corroded or unable to retain data unless the system explicitly includes functional assessment.
Whole-object, component and hybrid grading
The more complex the collectible, the less likely one overall number is to preserve what a serious collector needs to know.
Whole-object grade
Strengths
Simple, familiar, easy to display and convenient for marketplaces.
Weaknesses
Can conceal uneven condition, one critical defect or a weak internal component.
Component grades
Strengths
More transparent for multi-part objects and useful for precise comparison.
Weaknesses
Weighting may be unclear and the apparent mathematics can imply more precision than the judgement supports.
Hybrid record
Structure
One overall grade, component subgrades, qualifiers, defect notes, completeness, originality and confidence.
Best use
Complex collectibles where a headline grade is useful but insufficient.
Lowest-component dominance is not always an arithmetic rule
A packaged toy might have a strong card, excellent figure and severely cracked bubble. A boxed game might have a high-grade box but a heavily worn manual. In either case, the weakest component may cap the overall grade because it changes structural integrity, sealed status or the character of the set.
Collectors should ask whether the cap is an explicit published rule, an aggregation formula, or the grader's holistic judgement. Do not assume the overall grade is a simple average of the visible subgrades.
Composite collectibles and issue-correct completeness
Boxed sets, role-playing games, model kits, collector's editions and similar objects combine packaging, printed matter, accessories and sometimes mechanical or electronic function. Their condition cannot be understood without also understanding what belongs together.
Condition
How worn, damaged, altered or stable are the surviving parts?
Completeness
Are all expected components present, including small inserts, maps, counters, reference sheets or advertising material?
Originality
Are the parts original to the issue, or are there reproductions, replacements, later printings or repaired elements?
Component matching
Do the parts belong to the same release, printing, region and production state, or has the set been assembled from donor copies?
Collector scenario: the apparently exceptional boxed role-playing set
The box top is bright, the corners are sharp and the books are lightly handled. A single overall grade could reasonably be high. Yet the set contains a later-printing rulebook, replacement dice, a photocopied reference sheet and counters taken from another issue.
The object may be visually strong and practically usable, but the serious record must separate condition from completeness, originality and component matching. A high condition grade does not make the set factory-complete or issue-correct.
Domain boundary
Grading does not absorb authentication, restoration, provenance or valuation
A grading system may record authenticity conclusions, alteration status, restoration categories or certificates, but these remain distinct questions. A high condition grade cannot compensate for failed authenticity. A restored object may present beautifully but require an intervention status. Provenance can strengthen confidence in identity or ownership history without changing physical condition.
Value is also separate. Grade can influence price, but rarity, demand, historical importance, provenance, issue significance and market timing determine how much that grade matters.
Manufacturing quality, age and normal variation
One of the hardest tasks in domain-specific grading is deciding whether an observed feature is a production characteristic, a collectible variant, acceptable normal variation or later damage.
Evidence
What is physically present?
Record the miscentring, weak strike, irregular perforation, paint overspray, packaging fold, print line or glaze irregularity without deciding too quickly what caused it.
Meaning
How does this system classify it?
The system may count it against the grade, allow a manufacturing tolerance, recognise it as an error or variant, or separate production quality from post-production condition.
Collector risk
Do not turn age into a blanket exemption
An old object can be exceptional for its age and still occupy a low absolute condition grade. Relative survival and objective condition should be recorded as separate statements.
Normal variation versus warning sign
Potentially normal or production-related
- known irregular printing or cutting associated with the issue;
- accepted handmade variation in decorative arts;
- factory paint tolerance documented across comparison examples;
- original folds, seams or packaging construction features.
Potential warning signs
- features inconsistent with known examples or production methods;
- fresh cutting, trimming, resealing, recolouring or regumming;
- mismatched wear between components;
- unexplained differences that may indicate repair, replacement or assembly.
Where domain-specific systems still fail
Specialisation improves relevance, but it does not make grading scientific, timeless or immune to market pressure.
False precision
Fine increments such as 9.4 versus 9.6 or 85 versus 90 may have major commercial consequences even when expert graders cannot reproduce the distinction perfectly.
Proprietary thresholds
Two companies may use similar-looking scales yet apply different tolerances, caps and interpretations. The authority must travel with the grade.
Grade compression
Market attention often crowds into a narrow high-grade band. Small differences then become financially significant while lower ranges receive less nuanced attention.
Grade drift and inflation
Standards may move as comparison populations grow, market language loosens, services compete, or resubmission incentives reward a higher outcome.
Headline-grade loss
The number can hide restoration, missing contents, weak reverse or interior condition, replacement parts, untested function or a serious problem on one component.
Market acceptance mistaken for objectivity
A widely accepted system can be commercially useful and comparatively consistent without becoming a laboratory measurement. Professional grading remains structured expert judgement.
A collector's method for reading any grading system
Before relying on a grade, move through the system in a fixed order. This prevents the headline number from controlling the assessment too early.
1. Identify the object and domain
Confirm the collectible type, production form, issue and any category-specific characteristics that determine which system should apply.
2. Define the item state
State whether the object is sealed, boxed, loose, circulated, unused, restored, complete-in-box or another relevant state before assigning or interpreting a grade.
3. Name the authority and native scale
Record the grading company, published standard, dealer convention, community method or owner-assessment framework. Similar numbers from different authorities are not interchangeable.
4. Find the grade-controlling evidence
Identify which defects, missing parts, alterations or production characteristics actually controlled the outcome rather than relying on the label alone.
5. Read qualifiers, caps and exclusions
Check for qualified, restored, altered, incomplete, off-centre, page-quality, strike, seal or other attached information. Determine whether anything prevented ordinary grading.
6. Separate neighbouring conclusions
Record authenticity, completeness, originality, intervention and functionality separately wherever the system does not already preserve them clearly.
7. Preserve evidence and confidence
Keep photographs, defect notes, certification data, the grading date and any uncertainty about unseen areas, remote inspection or changing standards.
Document the full grading context
For a collection record, insurance schedule, sale listing or future reassessment, 'Grade: 9' is too little information. Preserve the grade as a structured claim that can be checked later.

Preserve the original wording
Do not simplify “Qualified 6.0” to “6.0”, “Authentic Altered” to “Authentic”, or a component breakdown to its overall score. The omitted wording may be the most important part of the assessment.
Separate assigned and observed condition
A collector can record the certified grade alongside an owner observation, such as a visible print line, weak reverse, damaged insert or uncertain functionality. This adds evidence without silently replacing the assigned grade.
Do not silently normalise
Where a platform presents a common comparison score, mark it as approximate, authority-published, marketplace-derived or internally mapped, and retain the native grade beside it.
Use domain-appropriate photographs
Photograph the evidence the field actually uses: coin edge and angled light, card corners and reflective surface, comic spine and selected interiors, stamp reverse and perforations, toy seals and bubble edges, or boxed-set contents and issue identifiers.
When the system should give way to description
Published standards work best where there are many comparison examples, stable terminology and a reasonably repeatable object type. Rare, unique or hybrid objects may not fit those assumptions.
Specialist threshold
Use a specialist or a more descriptive record when the object is a prototype, handmade artefact, pre-production sample, materially unstable object, suspected composite, altered high-value item, or an object whose internal condition cannot be safely inspected.
The collector should not force a unique object into a scale built for routine production examples merely to obtain a familiar number.
Describe what can be defended
- overall and structural condition;
- active deterioration;
- completeness and component matching;
- originality, repairs and replacement parts;
- significant defects and uncertainty.
Avoid what the evidence cannot support
- invented mathematical conversion;
- universal use of Mint or Near Mint;
- assumptions about unseen interiors;
- age-based grade inflation;
- commercial value implied by grade alone.
Final principle
The most useful grading system is not the one with the greatest number of increments. It is the one whose rules match the object, whose terminology is understood by its collecting community, and whose result preserves enough evidence to be checked, explained and compared. A grade is a conclusion reached under a particular framework; the framework is part of the grade.
