What Grading Means
Grading is the structured assessment of a collectible's observable condition against a stated standard. It converts a complicated physical object - with wear, damage, manufacturing irregularities, ageing, repairs and visual qualities - into a shorthand description such as Fine, Near Mint, 9.4, PSA 8 or MS-65.
That shorthand is useful because collectors need a shared language for comparing examples, setting collection thresholds and communicating condition at a distance. But the grade is not the object itself. It is a compressed judgement made from evidence, under a particular system, at a particular time.
A serious collector therefore asks more than 'What grade is it?' The better questions are: who assigned the grade, under which standard, what evidence produced it, what the grade includes, what it leaves separate, and whether the particular object still suits the collection.
The responsible meaning of a grade
A grade is a standardised opinion about the observable condition of a specific collectible, made at a particular time, under a particular system, using the evidence available during inspection.

A grade places an object within a defined condition hierarchy. It is not a declaration that the object is good, desirable or worth buying.
The object has physical characteristics; the grade is the classification applied to them.

The number or word summarises marks, wear, structural faults, surface quality, alterations and other category-specific evidence. It cannot display the whole defect profile.
Read the evidence that produced the grade, not only the grade itself.
Context
Meaning belongs to the standard
A grade only becomes meaningful when the object type, grading scale, service or reference framework, and relevant version of the standard are known.
A 9 on one scale is not automatically equivalent to a 9 on another.
Time
A snapshot, not a permanent state
A grade records condition as assessed during an inspection. Objects can deteriorate, holders can fail and previously hidden evidence can emerge later.
An old certification is evidence of a past assessment, not proof that nothing has changed.
How judgement is formed
From physical evidence to a grade
A useful grade does not appear directly from the object. It is built through a chain of observation, interpretation and classification. Separating these stages helps the collector identify where fact ends and judgement begins.

Observe
Record what can be seen, measured, photographed or verified: scratches, creases, fading, corrosion, missing pieces, repairs, replaced parts, weak joints or packaging damage.

Interpret
Decide what the observations represent: production variation, normal handling, heavy use, poor storage, later intervention, active deterioration or structural failure.

Weight
Judge the significance of each issue. Location, severity, visibility, cumulative effect, originality and category conventions can all change how strongly a defect affects the result.

Classify
Place the object within the chosen scale, applying thresholds, limiting defects, qualifiers and confidence proportionately rather than forcing a false precision.

Explain
Support the shorthand with photographs, condition notes, subgrades, grader comments, inspection limits and uncertainty so another person can understand the judgement.
A grade is a judgement, not a measurement
Some condition facts can be measured directly: the length of a tear, the amount of centring deviation, the percentage of paint loss, the dimensions of a box or the number of missing components. The final grade, however, usually combines several observations into one conclusion.
The grader must decide which defects matter, how severe they are, whether they are isolated or cumulative, whether one major fault overrides several strengths, and how the object compares with established examples. Grading is therefore not purely mechanical. It is disciplined expert judgement constrained by a standard.
Professional services try to improve consistency through written criteria, reference examples, multiple graders and verification stages. These controls reduce variation; they do not turn grading into an infallible scientific measurement.
Numerical scales are hierarchies, not percentages
Collectors sometimes read an 8 as '80 percent perfect' or assume that every step on a scale represents an equal amount of deterioration. Most grading scales do not work that way. They are primarily ordinal: they place objects in an ordered sequence from lower to higher condition.
The difference between 2 and 3 may not be visually, technically or commercially equivalent to the difference between 9 and 10. At the upper end, tiny imperfections may separate grades because the permitted tolerance becomes increasingly narrow. The number is a category label within a hierarchy, not a percentage score.
Adjectival grades also need definitions
Words such as Poor, Fair, Good, Fine, Excellent, Near Mint and Mint appear intuitive, but ordinary language often differs from technical collector usage. In several hobbies, Good is a relatively low grade permitting substantial wear. Mint may still have a defined tolerance rather than meaning metaphysical perfection.
Adjectival grading becomes dependable only when the object category and underlying definitions are known, the terms are applied consistently, and photographs support the description. Without those controls, grade language can become little more than persuasive sales wording.
Defect profile
The grade is a compression of evidence
Two objects can receive the same overall grade through very different combinations of strengths and faults. The grade band tells you where each object sits; it does not tell you the path by which it arrived there.
Example A
One conspicuous fault
Strong colour, sharp corners and clean edges, but one obvious surface scratch across a focal area.
The overall grade may be limited by a single prominent defect.
Example B
Distributed minor wear
No major fault, but several softened corners, light general handling and reduced gloss across the object.
Several modest defects may accumulate into the same overall grade.
Photographs, grader notes, subgrades, condition reports and direct inspection reveal that path. Without them, collectors can mistake equal numbers for equivalent objects. A responsible comparison asks both what the assigned grade is and why this particular example received it.
Not all defects change the result in the same way
Degree defect
Lowers quality incrementally
Light edge wear, small contact marks or mild fading may move an object gradually down a condition hierarchy as severity increases.
Grade-limiting defect
Caps the possible result
A crease, detached cover, large stain, broken seal, clipped margin or serious crack may prevent a higher grade despite otherwise strong presentation.
Status-changing defect
Changes how the object is classified
Trimming, cleaning, recolouring, restoration, counterfeit components or other alterations may trigger a qualifier, details grade, restored label or refusal of a normal grade.
Category context
Grading is object-specific
Different collectibles age, wear, function and fail in different ways. Their grading systems therefore encode different priorities. A universal defect checklist cannot be applied mechanically across every field.
Cards
Edges, corners, centring and surface
Card systems commonly weigh corner sharpness, edge chipping, centring, gloss, print quality, stains, creases and evidence of trimming or alteration.
Comics and paper
Cumulative defects and structure
Spine stress, tears, folds, missing pieces, staple condition, page quality, writing, trimming and restoration may all affect the result, sometimes through separate designations.
Coins
Wear, marks, lustre and surface integrity
Coin grading commonly considers circulation wear, contact marks, strike, lustre, cleaning, corrosion, colour and other surface problems that may prevent an ordinary numerical grade.
Toys and boxed objects
Item, packaging and completeness may diverge
Paint wear, yellowing, cracked plastic, seals, inserts, accessories, replacement parts and mechanical function may require separate assessments rather than one ambiguous grade.
Books and ephemera
Paper, binding and intervention
Binding soundness, margins, folds, foxing, fading, tape, annotations, trimming, paper loss, restoration and completeness can matter differently from apparently similar comic standards.
Three-dimensional objects
Surface appearance is only one axis
Ceramics, models, mechanisms and composite objects may require inspection of cracks, joins, repairs, internal stability, replaced parts and working condition as well as display appearance.

What grading does not establish
Grading interacts with several other collector judgements, but it should not swallow them. Keeping these layers separate prevents a prominent grade from implying facts that were never established.
Authentication
Is the object what it claims to be?
An authentic object can be heavily damaged, restored or incomplete. A counterfeit can look pristine. Grading and authentication may be delivered together, but they answer different questions.
Completeness
Are all required components present?
A beautiful board game can lack a token; a figure can lack its weapon; a book can lack its jacket. Record completeness separately unless the grading system explicitly incorporates it.
Originality
Does the object remain substantially as produced?
Cleaning, retouching, pressing, polishing, replacement parts, reproduction packaging and restoration may improve appearance while reducing originality or changing the grading outcome.
Rarity
How scarce is the object or condition level?
Production rarity and condition rarity are distinct. A common object may be rare in top grade, while a scarce object may survive mainly in good condition.
Valuation
What is the object worth in its market context?
Grade informs value, but price also depends on rarity, demand, edition, provenance, authenticity, completeness, timing, population data, eye appeal and market trust.
Preservation
How can future change be reduced?
A grade records present condition. Preservation addresses storage, handling, environment and material stability so that the object does not continue to deteriorate.
Grade informs value; grade does not equal value. Grade describes condition; it does not independently prove identity, completeness, originality, rarity or provenance.
Interpretation
Normal variation, production flaws and later damage
Production flaws and later damage are not automatically equivalent
Off-centre printing, mould lines, weak strikes, factory roller marks, miscuts, casting bubbles and paint application variation originate during manufacture. Scratches, fading, corrosion, tears, trimming and rubbed paint arise later through handling, storage, intervention or deterioration.
Standards differ in how they treat factory-origin imperfections. Some deduct because the grade describes the finished object's appearance. Others distinguish production anomalies from later damage or permit limited manufacturing irregularities at particular levels.
The collector should record origin and effect separately. 'It left the factory that way' may explain a flaw, but it does not automatically make the flaw irrelevant to grade.
Age explains deterioration; it does not erase it
The phrase 'excellent for its age' may provide useful context, but it is rarely a formal grade. Most systems assess the object against category standards rather than granting a vague allowance because old objects are expected to be worn.
An old object can be exceptionally preserved and a new object can be badly damaged. Age can explain foxing, embrittlement, fading or corrosion, but explanation is not exemption. Collectors may compare an object both with the formal standard and with typical survivors; those are related but separate judgements.
Three different judgements
Technical grade, eye appeal and collector acceptability
These judgements influence one another, but they are not interchangeable. Separating them allows collectors to explain why two objects with the same technical grade may command different interest or why a correctly graded object may still be unsuitable for a particular collection.

Where the object sits under the standard
The technical grade accounts for permitted defects, limiting faults, wear and other criteria specified by the relevant framework.
Eye appeal
How this example presents within the grade
Colour, symmetry, centring, lustre, print quality, toning and the location of defects can make one example more attractive than another with the same grade.
Collector acceptability
Whether the object meets your collection policy
A collector may reject writing, restoration, odour, poor centring or replacement parts even when the object meets the desired numerical threshold.
Collector scenario: a grade threshold is not a complete buying rule
A collector may set a policy of grade 9 or better for common modern cards, but accept grade 4 or better for scarce vintage cards where the image remains clean and no restoration is present. Another collector may reject any example with writing or poor centring regardless of the number on the label.
The technical grade answers where the object falls under the standard. Collector acceptability answers whether this object meets the purpose, preferences and risk boundaries of the collection.

Raw grade
Assigned without third-party certification
The owner, dealer, auction house, specialist, seller or buyer may assign the grade. The reliability depends on expertise, evidence, transparency and the absence or management of financial bias.
Certified grade
Assigned by a grading service
The object normally receives a label, certification number and database record, and may be placed in a tamper-evident holder. Confidence depends on the service's standards and reputation in that category.
Collector judgement
Still required in both cases
Certification can improve standardisation and market confidence, but the buyer should still inspect the object, verify the certificate, read qualifiers and consider the visual quality within the grade.
A number printed on plastic is meaningful because collectors and markets trust the system behind it. That trust is category-specific. A respected service in one hobby may have little authority in another, and standards can change over time.

The large grade is only one field in a structured statement. Review every relevant designation before relying on the certification.

The collectible may still have a weak-looking defect profile, hidden issue or later deterioration despite the prominent number on the label.

Scratches, cracks, cloudiness, broken seals, internal movement and transit damage should be recorded separately because they affect protection and market confidence.
Certification
The label and database record must be verified
Counterfeit holders, altered labels, data-entry errors and mismatched certification numbers are separate risks from the technical grade itself.
Change and uncertainty
Grading is a snapshot in time
After grading, an object may fade, corrode, embrittle, develop mould, suffer adhesive failure, move inside a holder or experience impact, moisture or temperature damage. Encapsulation reduces some handling risks but does not suspend physical and chemical ageing.
Standards and knowledge can change as well. Regrading may produce a different result because the object sits near a boundary, the service applies an updated standard, a previously hidden defect becomes visible or another expert weights the evidence differently. A one-step disagreement does not automatically prove incompetence; repeated or substantial inconsistency is more concerning.

Use condition information in layers. This sequence prevents the grade from replacing identity, completeness, originality or market analysis.

Establish the object, edition, issue, variant and authenticity before allowing the grade to dominate the record.

Confirm what should be present and identify missing, replacement, reproduction or mismatched components.
Layer 3
Originality and intervention
Record cleaning, restoration, pressing, repair, recolouring, reinforcement or other alteration.
Layer 4
Physical condition
Describe the observable wear, damage, deterioration, structural condition and category-sensitive areas.
Layer 5
Grade
Translate the evidence into the chosen standard, using qualifiers and uncertainty where needed.
Layer 6
Eye appeal and suitability
Judge the visual character of this example and whether it meets the collector's own acceptance policy.
Layer 7
Market relevance
Only then combine grade with rarity, demand, provenance, population, liquidity and price evidence.
Questions to ask whenever a grade is presented
- Who assigned the grade, and do they have a financial interest in the result?
- Which scale and published definitions were used?
- Does the scale belong to this object category?
- Was authenticity assessed separately or as part of the service?
- Are completeness, originality and restoration included or recorded elsewhere?
- How does the system treat manufacturing flaws?
- Are subgrades, photographs, notes or a condition report available?
- Does the visible evidence support the assigned grade?
- Can the certification number and object details be verified?
- Is the holder damaged, tampered with or visually obstructive?
- Has the object had time or opportunity to change since grading?
- Is there a major price jump at this grade boundary?
- Would the object still appeal if the label were hidden?
Collection record
Document the evidence, not only the label
A collection record containing only “8” or “Near Mint” loses the evidence behind the conclusion. Strong documentation allows the judgement to be reviewed, challenged and updated without starting from memory.
