Authentication through comparison is the disciplined examination of an uncertain collectible against securely identified examples, documented production norms and credible historical records. Its purpose is not to find a convenient resemblance. It is to test whether the complete pattern of materials, manufacture, construction, markings, ageing and documented history makes better sense under the claimed identity than under the plausible alternatives.
Comparison is among the most powerful methods available to collectors, but it is also easily misused. A counterfeit is expected to resemble a genuine object.
