Probability & Confidence

Authentication rarely produces absolute certainty. Its real task is to determine how strongly the available evidence supports one defined explanation over realistic competing explanations, then communicate that judgement without claiming more than the evidence can bear.

Probability concerns the proposition: how plausible it is that the object is what it is represented to be. Confidence concerns the assessment: how much trust should be placed in that judgement given the evidence quality, examination scope, comparison material, methods, assumptions and unresolved uncertainty. Keeping those ideas separate is the core discipline of responsible authentication.

A better authentication conclusion

“The presently available evidence strongly supports production by the claimed maker, period and process, although the undocumented early ownership and replaced fastening prevent an unqualified conclusion.”

This is more informative than “authentic” because it identifies the supported claim, its strength, the limits and the reason confidence does not extend to every part of the story.

1. Orientation

Authentication begins with competing propositions

A feature has evidential value only in relation to the explanations it helps distinguish. The governing question is comparative, not merely descriptive.

Claimed explanation

The object is what it is represented to be

The stated maker, date, issue, production context, association and condition are substantially correct.

Alternative explanation

Another account fits the evidence better

The object may be a later reproduction, official reissue, period imitation, altered original, composite, misattribution, counterfeit, fantasy item or innocent look-alike.

The governing question

How expected would this evidence be if the claimed explanation were true, compared with how expected it would be under the most plausible alternative?

A convincing-looking feature may carry little weight if originals, legitimate later issues and counterfeits commonly share it. A visually modest manufacturing detail may carry substantial weight if it is strongly associated with the claimed process and difficult to reproduce accidentally.

2. Define the question

Probability attaches to a precise claim, not to the vague word authentic

An object can be genuine in one respect and misdescribed in another. A poster may be old and printed by the correct printer but belong to a later rerelease. A signed first edition may carry a genuine signature added decades after publication. A production-made prop may never have appeared on screen. A toy may come from original moulds yet be a later official reissue.

Break compound claims apart

“Original 1963 production, screen-used by the lead actor, retained by a crew member and signed during filming” contains at least seven separate propositions: date, production purpose, screen use, named performer, custody, signature authorship and signing date.

The object may be certainly period-made, probably production-made, plausibly screen-used, weakly linked to the actor and unsupported as to the circumstances of signing. Compressing all of that into authentic transfers confidence from the strongest claim to the weakest.

3. Weighing evidence

Compatibility is not probability, and quantity is not weight

Evidence should be classified by how reliable it is and how strongly it separates the claimed explanation from alternatives.

Strongly discriminating

Hard to explain under a realistic alternative

Examples include a production record linked by a unique number, a secure archival image match, period-exclusive manufacturing evidence or a continuous independently supported chain of custody.

Compatible but weak

Fits the claim without separating it from alternatives

Correct style, plausible age, approximate dimensions, common-period material or a believable seller story may be relevant, but copies and later issues can share them.

Negative

More expected under an alternative explanation

An impossible material, later typography, inconsistent construction, artificial wear, impossible chronology or repeated supposedly unique defect can materially lower probability.

Neutral

Consistent with the claim but not meaningfully informative

An old frame, professional-looking certificate, ownership by a serious collector or packaging that could have been paired later should not be counted as positive merely because it is not contradictory.

Evidence reliability

Can the observation or source be trusted?

Consider document authenticity, measurement quality, image resolution, chain of custody, contamination, repeatability, observer competence, source independence and motive to misrepresent.

Discriminating power

Does it distinguish the propositions?

Exact measurements may be highly reliable yet weak if copies share them. A blurred alleged set photograph may be potentially decisive yet poorly established. The strongest evidence is both reliable and strongly relevant.

Ten weak observations do not necessarily equal one strong observation

Correct colour, dimensions, wording, logo, placement, shape and apparent wear may all have been copied from a genuine scan or mould. They should not be treated as seven independent proofs. By contrast, one securely verified production record linked to an unaltered unique number may outweigh them all.

Confidence should rise with independent evidential pathways—construction, materials, documentation, historical fit and specialist comparison—not with repeated observations generated by one source or process.

4. Starting plausibility

Prior probability and base rates matter

Context affects plausibility before the object is examined. Known production quantities, survival rates, market frequency, geographic fit, seller history, documented variants and counterfeit prevalence all matter. A claim that one of ten examples survives requires a different evidential response if hundreds are circulating online.

Rarity is not disproof

Prior probability must not become prejudice. A rare object is not false merely because it is rare. Rarity does, however, mean that stronger evidence may be needed to overcome a low starting plausibility—especially where the market is saturated with false examples.

A test can appear highly accurate yet still produce more false passes than genuine ones when counterfeits vastly outnumber originals. Test performance must therefore be read alongside the relevant market population, not converted mechanically into final authenticity probability.

5. Confidence structure

Confidence is multidimensional and limited by its weakest critical link

A single score can conceal where an assessment is strong and where it remains vulnerable.

Object confidence

Is this the same physical object throughout the evidence?

Serials, photographs, damage, dimensions and custody records should connect the evidence to the examined object rather than to a similar example.

Identification confidence

Has the object been classified correctly?

Type, model, edition, issue, production stage and legitimate later variants must be separated before authenticity is judged.

Attribution confidence

How secure is the claimed maker or signer?

An object can be authentically old or production-made while remaining uncertain as to named artist, factory, studio, performer or owner.

Date confidence

How securely does the evidence establish the claimed period?

Period-compatible material is not automatically period-specific, and dating a component does not necessarily date the whole assembly.

Provenance and association confidence

How securely is the object linked to its claimed history?

A genuine period object may still lack proof that it belonged to a named person, appeared in a named production or was used in the exact manner described.

Method confidence

Can the chosen method answer the question?

A careful examination cannot produce a strong answer if the reference set, test, imagery or analytical method lacks the power to distinguish the competing propositions.

The weakest critical link sets the ceiling

Laboratory analysis may establish that paint is old, archives may show that the named artist used that pigment and style may be broadly compatible. If no evidence links the particular work to the artist rather than a contemporary follower, confidence in the attribution remains limited. Strength elsewhere cannot repair the missing link on which the specific claim depends.

6. Examination scope

Every form of examination has a natural confidence ceiling

Listing-level review

Useful for screening, not definitive authentication

Seller descriptions and selected images may reveal obvious contradictions or justify further enquiry, but the seller controls what is visible and how it is described.

Photograph-based opinion

Can assess visible design and comparison features

Confidence remains limited by lighting, resolution, colour accuracy, scale, hidden surfaces, image manipulation and inability to test materials.

In-hand examination

Adds material, structural and tactile evidence

Weight, smell, surface, tool marks, concealed areas, wear and assembly can be examined directly, although internal or destructive questions may remain unresolved.

Multidisciplinary assessment

Combines object, technical, archival and provenance work

This can provide the broadest confidence, but only if the methods, reference samples and documentary links are themselves valid and independent.

Reference-set quality controls comparative confidence

References should ideally be independently authenticated, relevant to the same period, factory, issue or process, numerous enough to show normal variation and documented well enough to avoid circular attribution.

Comparing one questioned object with another, treating auction wording as proof, selecting only textbook examples, mixing periods or building a reference population from objects authenticated by the same unvalidated feature can produce confident but circular conclusions.

7. Expressing the conclusion

Use a verbal scale that describes evidential support, not personal conviction

Confirmed or directly established

The defined proposition is tied uniquely to exceptionally strong evidence and realistic alternatives have been decisively excluded.

Use with discipline: Use sparingly and state exactly what is confirmed; one confirmed component does not confirm every attached claim.

Very strongly supported

The total evidence overwhelmingly favours the proposition and realistic alternatives are difficult to reconcile with it.

Use with discipline: Residual uncertainty remains, but it is narrow and clearly described.

Strongly supported

Several substantial, preferably independent evidence streams favour the proposition without a major unresolved contradiction.

Use with discipline: One or more limitations remain, but they do not control the conclusion.

Moderately supported

The balance favours the proposition, but the case is incomplete, partly non-exclusive or vulnerable to a plausible alternative.

Use with discipline: Suitable for a provisional attribution, not for an unqualified premium claim.

Limited support

Some evidence is compatible with or mildly favours the proposition, but it is not sufficient for a firm conclusion.

Use with discipline: Record the claim as tentative and avoid presenting it as established fact.

Inconclusive

The available evidence does not meaningfully distinguish the principal propositions.

Use with discipline: This is a valid stopping point. It does not mean probably false; it means the question remains unresolved.

Evidence weighs against

One or more material observations are more readily explained by an alternative, although the case is not yet decisive.

Use with discipline: Describe the contradiction and what could still resolve it.

Strongly contradicted or demonstrably false

The evidence strongly favours an alternative, or a decisive contradiction makes the stated proposition impossible.

Use with discipline: Distinguish a fatal contradiction from a major anomaly that could instead indicate repair, replacement or a refined description.

Myth

Numerical percentages are more objective

“87% likely authentic” can create precision theatre when there are no robust population data, validated models, known error rates or transparent assumptions behind the number.

Reality

Carefully defined verbal conclusions are often safer

A transparent statement of evidential support, limitations, alternatives and confidence ceiling is more useful than an invented percentage whose calibration cannot be demonstrated.

8. Conflict and anomalies

Contradictions should be classified, not hidden

Fatal contradiction

Makes the defined proposition impossible

For example, an integral material or technology demonstrably post-dates the claimed production period, assuming that feature is original to the object.

Major contradiction

Strongly inconsistent but potentially explainable

Repair, component substitution, legitimate variation or an incorrect assumption may explain it, but confidence should fall until that explanation is evidenced.

Minor anomaly or unresolved irregularity

Unexpected without yet controlling the conclusion

Further examination or a better reference population may be needed before the observation can be interpreted responsibly.

Apparent contradiction

Disappears when the claim is refined

An object may fail as a first issue yet fit a later official issue. Refining the proposition is not rescuing the claim; it is describing the object more accurately.

Conflicting evidence usually lowers confidence until it has a coherent explanation

Physical construction may support authenticity while provenance remains weak; material may be period-compatible while typography is anomalous; documentation may be strong while one component appears replaced. The task is not to count positives and negatives but to explain why the streams conflict and whether alteration, substitution, misidentification, incomplete history or sophisticated deception best accounts for them.

Domain boundary

Probability does not replace attribution, provenance, grading, valuation or preservation

This chapter governs how strongly an authentication proposition is supported. It does not itself determine condition grade, market value, conservation treatment or legal title. A genuine period object may be heavily restored; a well-preserved object may be misattributed; a valuable market consensus may rest on weak evidence; and strong provenance may still be attached to the wrong physical object.

Record those judgements separately so that confidence in one domain does not silently migrate into another.

9. Collector decisions

Decision thresholds are not the same as authenticity probability

Different actions can reasonably require different levels of support. A collector may keep an uncertain object for study, decline to pay a premium, insure it only at an unattributed value, avoid naming the alleged maker publicly, accept it into a teaching collection or seek costly testing only before a major transaction.

Lower-risk action

Retain, study and document without upgrading the claim

Preserve the object, record the uncertainty, compare it further and avoid irreversible intervention. An unresolved item can remain useful without being marketed as established.

Higher-consequence action

Purchase, sale, insurance or publication at a premium

Require stronger, better documented and more independent support because other people may rely financially or scholarly on the claim.

False-positive risk

A false or misdescribed object is accepted

Consequences include financial loss, market contamination, false provenance, distorted scholarship, insurance problems and resale disputes.

False-negative risk

An authentic object is rejected

Consequences include undervaluation, lost provenance, missed scholarship and removal from the recognised corpus. Strictness describes an error preference, not proven accuracy.

Market confidence is not evidential confidence

Auction-house sales, dealer ownership, encapsulation, celebrity endorsement, publication and repeated high prices can increase liquidity and commercial acceptance. They do not automatically establish physical authenticity.

The same caution applies to certificates and third-party labels. Their weight depends on who issued them, what proposition was covered, whether the object was examined, which methods were used, whether the certificate uniquely identifies the object, whether limitations are disclosed and whether the issuer is independent and accountable.

10. Practical workflow

A disciplined authentication sequence

The workflow below turns uncertainty into a transparent, reviewable assessment rather than a forced verdict.

Define the exact claim

Separate identity, maker, date, issue, originality, association, provenance, condition and alteration. Do not authenticate the vague proposition that an object is simply real.

Define realistic alternatives

Include innocent and deceptive explanations: later official issue, period imitation, reconstructed original, authentic object with false provenance, original component in a later assembly and deliberate counterfeit.

Record the starting context

Consider production quantities, survival, market frequency, geography, seller history, known counterfeit prevalence and whether the claimed variation is independently documented.

Gather evidence by domain

Use physical, material, manufacturing, stylistic, documentary, provenance, historical, scientific and comparative evidence where relevant.

Assess reliability and discrimination separately

Ask first whether the observation or source is trustworthy, then whether it actually distinguishes the claim from the best alternative.

Map dependence

Trace common sources. A seller statement, seller-written certificate, auction description and database entry copied from the auction may represent one assertion, not four confirmations.

Investigate contradictions

Classify them as fatal, major, minor, unresolved or only apparent after the proposition is refined. Do not average them away or call every anomaly normal variation.

Test sensitivity

Remove the strongest item of evidence or change a disputed assumption. A robust conclusion survives reasonable changes; a fragile one depends on a single critical premise.

Set the confidence ceiling

Low-resolution photographs, inaccessible surfaces, unverified references, destructive-testing restrictions or missing provenance impose limits that stronger prose cannot overcome.

State claim-specific conclusions

Say what is supported, how strongly, why, what remains uncertain and what evidence could change the assessment. Do not allow a strong conclusion on period manufacture to inflate a weak ownership claim.

11. Documentation

Record enough to reconstruct why confidence changed

Collector record checklist

  • The exact proposition or propositions assessed.
  • The examination level: listing, photographs, in hand, instrumental or multidisciplinary.
  • The realistic alternative explanations considered.
  • Observed facts kept separate from interpretation and seller claims.
  • Reference examples used and why they are trusted.
  • Evidence reliability, discriminating power, direction and limitations.
  • Evidence dependencies and repeated claims traced to their common source.
  • Anomalies, contradictions and inaccessible areas.
  • The claim-specific verbal conclusion and confidence ceiling.
  • What evidence would increase, reduce or reverse the assessment.
  • Original listing, invoice, correspondence, certificates, photographs, test results and prior opinions.
  • Dates and reasons for later revisions.

Model conclusion

Period manufacture: Physical construction, print process and paper characteristics strongly support manufacture in the claimed production period.

Exact issue: Moderately supported. The label differs from documented first-run examples and appears to be a later replacement, affecting originality without presently invalidating the underlying object.

Named ownership: Limited support. The earliest documentation begins fourteen years after production and the family account is not independently corroborated.

Limitations: Examination was non-destructive and the reverse of the mounted section could not be inspected.

12. Specialist threshold

Escalate when the claim, method or consequence exceeds collector-level assessment

  • A high-value decision depends on a disputed attribution or historical association.
  • Hidden construction, sealed components or altered surfaces control the conclusion.
  • Scientific testing is needed, especially where sampling may be destructive.
  • The comparison population is small, disputed or vulnerable to circular authentication.
  • Evidence streams materially conflict and no coherent collector-level explanation is available.
  • A certificate, guarantee or expert opinion must be evaluated outside its issuer's own claims.
  • The result may affect legal title, insurance, institutional accession or public scholarship.

Specialist involvement should be matched to the question: materials scientist, conservator, archivist, provenance researcher, handwriting specialist, category expert or legal adviser. No single expert necessarily covers every proposition.

The governing idea

Probability and confidence do not weaken authentication. They make it intellectually honest. They discipline judgement so that claims are precisely framed, alternatives are considered, evidence is weighed rather than accumulated, uncertainty remains visible and future evidence can revise the result.

The strongest conclusion is not necessarily the one delivered with the greatest certainty. It is the one that makes clear what is supported, how strongly, why, what remains uncertain and what evidence could change the judgement.
