Choosing an Enclosure

A protective enclosure is the immediate environment around a collectible. It can reduce dust, abrasion, handling damage, light, pollutants, pests, water exposure and physical distortion, while keeping parts together and making retrieval safer. It is not merely packaging, and it is not successful simply because a product is clear, expensive, close fitting or described as archival.

The wrong enclosure can create a new preservation problem. It may trap moisture or degradation products, press against vulnerable surfaces, encourage sticking, conceal mould or corrosion, abrade an object during removal, or make access so awkward that the collector damages the item while trying to protect it. The enclosure must therefore be chosen around the object's materials, condition, geometry, vulnerabilities and pattern of use - not merely its dimensions or market value.

Chapter 1

What a good enclosure actually does

The most effective housings solve several related problems at once without creating a more serious one.

Physical protection

It limits dust, fingerprints, rubbing, impact, bending, crushing, snagging, movement, component loss and contact with neighbouring objects.

Environmental moderation

It can reduce light and pollutant exposure, slow short-term humidity change and add a barrier against minor leaks or pest entry. It cannot repair an unsuitable room.

Organisational protection

It keeps parts associated, carries identification, supports inventory and shelving, and reduces unnecessary object handling during inspection and retrieval.

Chapter 2

Begin with the object, not the supplier catalogue

Before choosing a box, sleeve or case, diagnose what the object requires and what it cannot safely tolerate.

What is it made from?

Materials and components

Treat most collectibles as composite objects. A boxed toy may combine printed board, clear plastic, painted metal, soft PVC, rubber, foam, adhesives, paper inserts and electronic parts. The enclosure must accommodate the most vulnerable component, not merely the dominant one.

  • Identify direct-contact surfaces.
  • Look for materials that off-gas, stain or migrate.
  • Separate components that may damage one another.

What is already vulnerable?

Condition and active change

Brittleness, lifting print, sticky plastic, powdery corrosion, crumbling foam, mould, insect activity, failing adhesive and unusual odours change the housing decision. A routine enclosure should not conceal an active problem.

  • Note weak edges, loose parts and projecting features.
  • Identify surfaces that must not be rubbed or touched.
  • Isolate wet, mouldy, infested or chemically unstable objects.

How does it safely carry its own weight?

Geometry and load paths

Assess whether the object is flat or three-dimensional, rigid or flexible, balanced or top-heavy, compact or oversized. Decide which surfaces may bear weight and which must remain free of pressure.

  • Protect handles, stems, spouts, blisters and protrusions.
  • Support the full footprint where possible.
  • Choose the safest orientation before choosing the container.

How often will it be opened?

Access and use

Frequent access favours simple opening, visibility, a handling tray and replaceable outer layers. Long-term low-access storage may justify stronger light exclusion, deeper buffering and multiple enclosure layers.

  • Make the safe action the obvious action.
  • Avoid removal methods that require dragging or squeezing.
  • Keep the enclosure manageable when full.

Chapter 3

Choose the handling action before the enclosure form

The difference between a sleeve, folder, tray and box is not cosmetic. Each requires a different movement from the collector and imposes different stresses on the object.

Best for sound, flat objects where visibility matters

Sleeves

A correctly specified sleeve can reduce fingerprints and repeated direct handling. It does not automatically provide enough stiffness, light protection or environmental buffering.

  • Favour for stable cards, photographs, documents and ephemera.
  • Add board or a secondary box where structural support is needed.
  • Avoid direct polyester contact with powdery, friable or flaking surfaces.

Best where sliding contact would be dangerous

Folders and four-flap enclosures

These open around the object rather than requiring the object to pass through a narrow mouth. They are often safer than sleeves or envelopes for brittle paper, maps, booklets and weak-edged flat items.

  • Provide broad support from several sides.
  • Retain small fragments without trapping them in a seam.
  • Label externally before loading the object.

Useful only when insertion and withdrawal are safe

Envelopes

An envelope offers all-round protection but imposes a sliding action. Seams, flaps and adhesive zones must remain clear of sensitive image or decoration areas.

  • Use a generous opening.
  • Avoid centre seams behind photographs.
  • Do not choose an envelope for snagging, brittle or friable objects.

Best as a handling platform inside a larger enclosure

Open trays

A tray lets the housing, rather than the object, be lifted. It is particularly useful for awkward three-dimensional objects, loose fragments and items that need a shaped support.

  • Support the whole footprint.
  • Use cavities and dividers to limit movement without clamping.
  • Place open trays in drawers, cabinets or lidded boxes for dust protection.

The broadest solution for fragile, multipart or irregular objects

Lidded and drop-front boxes

Boxes provide structural protection, light and dust exclusion, labelling space and a stable handling unit. Drop-front or clamshell designs improve access by allowing the enclosure to open away from the object.

  • Favour where projecting parts could snag.
  • Use internal spacers rather than a tight outer fit.
  • Keep related parts together but individually supported.

Suitable for sound volumes, risky for damaged ones

Slipcases

A slipcase leaves the spine visible and can support a structurally sound book. It also requires sliding contact, may compress the binding and can catch damaged covers or decoration.

  • Use only where removal is smooth and pressure-free.
  • Prefer a clamshell or phase box for damaged bindings.
  • Remember that the exposed spine still receives light and dust.

Myth

The enclosure that fits most closely gives the best protection.

Reality

Protection comes from controlled support. A safe enclosure prevents damaging movement while allowing insertion, inspection and removal without pressure, dragging or snagging.

Chapter 4

Material names matter more than preservation language

Terms such as archival, museum quality, acid-free and conservation grade may be used inconsistently. A collector needs composition and performance information, not reassurance alone.

Breathable, opaque and easy to label

Preservation paper and board

  • Seek purified fibre, low lignin, suitable pH and known additives.
  • Use buffered stock only where the object is compatible with alkalinity.
  • Remember that paper absorbs water and may abrade delicate surfaces.

Clear, strong and dimensionally stable

Polyester film

  • Specify uncoated PET without plasticisers or unknown surface treatments.
  • Use for stable flat objects requiring frequent viewing.
  • Avoid where static, trapped moisture or stiff edges threaten the object.

Versatile plastics when composition is known

Polypropylene and polyethylene

  • Useful for sleeves, bags, trays, boxes, films and cushioning.
  • Reject products with unidentified coatings, fragrances or antimicrobial treatments.
  • Polyethylene film is softer than polyester where rigid film could abrade.

Support without corrective force

Foams and cushioning

  • Use known, tested foams that retain shape and do not crumble or become sticky.
  • Cover rough foam where it may imprint or abrade.
  • Design supports to cradle, not clamp, stretch or reshape.

Common sources of acids and volatile pollutants

Wood and ordinary board

  • Avoid direct contact with wood, MDF, chipboard, plywood and acidic cardboard.
  • Use internal barriers and independent enclosures where wooden furniture remains in use.
  • Watch for moisture absorption, mould and pest vulnerability.

Do not rely on appearance or the word vinyl

PVC and unknown plastics

  • Warning signs include odour, tackiness, yellowing, oily surfaces and hardening.
  • Avoid highly flexible unidentified plastics in long-term direct contact.
  • Replace degrading sleeves before residues transfer to the collectible.

Buffered versus unbuffered paper

Buffered paper contains an alkaline reserve intended to neutralise acids. It may suit many paper documents, books, cotton and linen. It is not automatically better for every collectible.

Often considered for

Acidic paper, many books, cotton, linen and compatible black-and-white photographic materials.

May require unbuffered housing

Cyanotypes, blueprints, some colour photographs, silk, wool, leather and sensitive dyes or pigments.

Chapter 5

Fit, orientation and support

Correct fit is not a matter of eliminating every millimetre of space. It is the controlled relationship between the object, its support and the forces created during storage and handling.

When the fit is too tight

  • Raised surfaces, windows and relief can be crushed.
  • Bindings, boxes and flexible plastics may distort.
  • Edges abrade during insertion and removal.
  • Glossy, painted or plasticised surfaces may stick.
  • Projecting elements can catch and break.

When the fit is too loose

  • Objects slide, collide, overturn or strike dividers.
  • Corners and weak components absorb handling shocks.
  • Empty space invites unrelated objects to be added.
  • Deep containers become heavy and difficult to control.
  • Identification and retrieval become less reliable.

Use fitted trays, inert spacers, dividers, tissue rolls, padded cavities, folded-board supports or shaped foam to restrain movement. Do not achieve restraint by compressing the collectible.

Sound ↔ structurally weak

A sound object may tolerate a fitted sleeve or slipcase. A weak object usually needs an enclosure that opens around it and carries it on a support.

Stable surface ↔ friable surface

Stable surfaces may accept suitable direct-contact film or tissue. Powdery, lifting or tacky surfaces require non-contact support and specialist judgement.

Inert ↔ off-gassing

Stable materials may benefit from close dust exclusion. Deteriorating plastics, rubber, acetate and other emitting materials may require separation and ventilation.

Dry and clean ↔ damp, mouldy or infested

Routine rehousing is appropriate only for clean, dry, stable objects. Dampness, mould and active pests require isolation and treatment planning first.

Orientation judgement

Store flat when

The object cannot support itself vertically, is heavy relative to its structure, has weak board or bindings, or contains parts that may slump or detach.

Store upright when

It is structurally sound, supported on both sides, carried through a strong base and can be removed without pulling a fragile component.

Store on an edge only when

The object was designed for that orientation and no weak seam, attachment or projection carries the load.

Chapter 6

Clear or opaque, ventilated or sealed

Visibility and closure should be deliberate responses to risk. Neither transparency nor airtightness is inherently superior.

Clear enclosures

They reduce identification handling and support inspection, especially when the clear primary enclosure remains inside an opaque box or cabinet.

  • Transmit light.
  • May generate static or trap moisture.
  • Can encourage permanent display in storage plastic.

Opaque enclosures

They protect light-sensitive objects and can improve privacy and security when the label provides enough identification.

  • Require reliable external labelling.
  • May require opening for inspection.
  • Work well as a secondary enclosure around a clear primary layer.

Ventilated or breathable housing

Often favoured for:

  • Paper and books in stable ordinary rooms.
  • Objects releasing volatile degradation products.
  • Some plastics, rubber and deteriorating acetate materials.
  • Recently treated or manufactured objects that need assessment.

More tightly sealed housing

May be justified for:

  • Defined pollutant or pest exclusion.
  • Metals stored with correctly conditioned desiccants.
  • Objects requiring a monitored microclimate.
  • Moderately unstable rooms where buffering is designed and maintained.

Chapter 7

Collector scenarios: what changes the decision

These examples show why object category alone is not enough. Condition, materials and original packaging alter the answer.

A boxed action figure with a clear blister

The retail package is both evidence and a vulnerable composite object. A tight protector that presses the blister or raised graphics may create deformation. A rigid outer box with non-contact spacers is usually a safer strategy than shrink-wrapping the package.

Inspect the card, blister, adhesive seams, staples, figure plastics and accessories separately. The original package should itself be treated as a collection object.

A brittle map consulted several times a year

A tight sleeve reduces fingerprints but still requires insertion and withdrawal. A four-flap enclosure on a rigid support lets the housing open around the map and can be lifted as a unit.

A secondary opaque box provides light and dust protection, while a digital image can absorb routine reference use.

A vintage plastic object with a strong odour

The smell is evidence, not merely a nuisance. The object may be releasing degradation products capable of damaging itself or neighbouring materials. Sealing it into a tight display case could concentrate those emissions.

Separate it, identify the plastic where possible, provide suitable ventilation and monitor nearby paper, metal and plastics for staining or corrosion.

Chapter 8

Original packaging: protection, artefact and possible hazard

Original packaging can carry historical, evidential and monetary value while containing materials that are poor long-term enclosures.

Retail packaging may contain acidic cardboard, PVC windows, unstable foam, degrading adhesive, metal staples, rubber bands, printed tissue or plasticised trays. The answer is rarely to discard it without thought. Decide whether the object can remain inside safely, whether an inert barrier or internal support is needed, and whether the complete assemblage should sit within a larger protective box.

Five questions for original packaging

  1. Can the object safely remain inside the original package?
  2. Are unstable inserts, foams, rubbers or plastics in direct contact?
  3. Does the package need support to prevent collapse or pressure on windows?
  4. Can object and packaging remain associated without touching?
  5. Does the whole assemblage need a larger outer box for handling and light control?

Chapter 9

Adhesives, fasteners and human factors

A chemically appropriate box can still fail if its seams, labels, closures or opening action place the object at risk.

Avoid near the object

  • Pressure-sensitive, masking and packing tapes.
  • Rubber cement, spray adhesive and hot-melt glue.
  • Rubber bands, ordinary staples and metal paper clips.
  • Self-adhesive labels placed on the collectible.

Design for correct use

  • Make orientation obvious before the lid is opened.
  • Provide finger recesses, trays and clear lifting points.
  • Prevent loose parts from escaping during opening.
  • Keep filled boxes within a safe, controllable weight.

Write or print labels before loading the object. Keep adhesive labels off the collectible, and avoid advertising high value or sensitive security information where storage is visible to others.

Chapter 10

A practical enclosure-selection sequence

Use this order to prevent a supplier's product range from deciding the preservation strategy for you.

Identify the object

Record materials, components, dimensions, weight, condition, unstable features and the significance of any original packaging.

Name the dominant risks

Prioritise the threats that are genuinely likely: abrasion, impact, distortion, dust, light, pollutants, humidity, pests, water, component loss or unsafe handling.

Decide how it should rest

Choose flat, upright, edgewise or supported at an angle. Identify which parts may carry weight and whether a tray is needed.

Choose the primary contact material

Select a known and compatible paper, board, film, tissue, textile or foam. The marketing term archival is not enough.

Choose the enclosure form

Match sleeve, folder, four-flap, tray, box, capsule or custom support to the handling action the object can safely tolerate.

Set the degree of closure

Decide deliberately between ventilation, dust exclusion, light exclusion, pollutant barriers, pest resistance and a controlled microclimate.

Test the fit

Nothing should be compressed, dragged or able to collide. The housing must lift without flexing and permit safe removal.

Label before loading

Add identification, component count, orientation, fragile-area warnings, enclosure date and opening instructions before the object is inside.

Place it in suitable furniture

Use stable drawers, shelves or cabinets. The enclosure cannot compensate for a damp floor, overloaded shelf or sunlit room.

Inspect after rehousing

Check soon after installation and periodically thereafter for pressure, movement, odour, condensation, staining, dust ingress or enclosure failure.

Common enclosure mistakes

Buying by size alone

Correct dimensions do not establish chemical compatibility, support, safe access or suitable closure.

Trusting the word archival

Ask for polymer identity, fibre composition, pH, lignin, additives, coatings and relevant test results. A marketing claim is not a material specification.

Equating tightness with protection

A tight fit can crush relief, distort bindings, abrade edges and make removal hazardous. Restrain movement with spacers and supports instead.

Sealing an unstable object

A sealed container may trap moisture or concentrate degradation products. Sealing is an environmental strategy, not an automatic upgrade.

Using the enclosure as treatment

Do not flatten warped board, force books closed, stretch textiles or compress damaged packaging. Storage should stabilise the current safe form, not impose correction.

Forgetting the wider storage system

No sleeve or box makes an attic, garage, damp basement, sunlit shelf or overloaded cabinet safe.

Maintenance

Inspection, replacement and proportionality

Enclosures are sacrificial, maintainable parts of a preservation system. Review them for yellowing, brittleness, tackiness, odour, staining, failing seams, compressed cushioning, pest debris, mould, dust ingress, water marks, object movement and loose labels. Replace a housing when it no longer supports the object, has become contaminated, is itself degrading, no longer fits, or makes access unsafe.

Prioritise enclosure spending

  1. Actively vulnerable or deteriorating objects.
  2. Rare, irreplaceable or especially significant items.
  3. Fragile materials and structures.
  4. Frequently handled objects.
  5. Items capable of damaging neighbours.
  6. Awkward objects at high risk of accidental breakage.
  7. The remainder of the collection through standardised improvements.
