Doors and windows are not merely parts of a building envelope. For a collector, they form the boundary between a publicly accessible world and a private concentration of portable, identifiable and sometimes irreplaceable value.
The useful question is not simply, “Do I have good locks?” It is whether every realistic route into the collection can deter, resist, reveal and delay an unauthorised attempt long enough for a meaningful response—and whether a breach of the building still leaves further barriers between the intruder and the collection.
The governing principle
The weakest credible route governs the result
Security is rarely determined by the strongest door. It is determined by the easiest plausible route into the relevant space: a concealed utility door, an accessible rooflight, a weak internal garage door, a basement window, a shared hallway or a patio opening beside the collection room.
This changes the unit of assessment. The collector is not reviewing “the front door”; they are reviewing the property’s complete attack surface and the route from each opening to the objects, records and people inside.

Why entry-point security is different for collectors
A collection concentrates portable value, specialist knowledge and irreplaceable objects in one place. Entry-point decisions therefore need to account for more than ordinary household replacement cost.

Collector judgement
Ask: “Has the complete doorset been designed, installed and maintained to resist forced entry?”—not merely, “What brand is the lock?”
Main entrance doors
The main entrance must combine resistance with reliable everyday use. A door that is secure only when operated perfectly is vulnerable to routine human error.

Composite, uPVC and metal doors
Material labels do not establish security. These doors remain dependent on cylinders, reinforcement, keeps, adjustment, installation and full engagement.

Sliding, patio and French doors
Large glazed openings create a broad boundary that may combine concealment, visibility of the collection and direct access to a collection room.
- For sliding doors, assess track lifting, meeting rails, rollers, frame anchoring and anti-lift measures.
- For French doors, assess both leaves, shoot bolts, meeting-stile rigidity and correct locking of each leaf.

Chapter 4
Windows are part of the attack surface
A window can be an entry route, an observation point, a preservation weakness and a path for water, pests or pollutants. Classification should follow real accessibility and consequence rather than floor level or familiarity.
Accessible windows
Treat accessibility as a property of the whole site. A first-floor or roof window may become reachable because of bins, walls, trees, balconies, roofs, scaffolding or outbuildings.

Glazing: safety, retention and security are different questions
Stronger glazing can delay entry only when it remains retained in a suitable frame. The pane, bead, fixing, frame and surrounding structure form one system.

It should not be treated as a meaningful security barrier. Once broken, it may leave an open route through the frame.

High impact resistance in suitable systems
It can introduce scratching, distortion, ageing, fire, cleaning and fixing issues. It should be specified as a system rather than improvised as a substitute pane.
Do not strengthen the pane and ignore the frame
A stronger pane may simply transfer attack to weak glazing beads, decayed timber, poor wall fixings or an adjacent panel. Confirm what has actually been tested: the glass, the frame, the assembly, the installation or the complete product in the configuration being purchased.
Chapter 5
Secondary openings and shared buildings
Garages, outbuildings, service routes and communal entrances often sit outside the collector’s mental picture of the home while still connecting directly to the collection.
Garage and internal access
Treat the external garage door and the internal connecting door as separate boundaries. Garages may contain tools, ladders, labels, vehicle navigation history, transport cases and spare keys.
The internal door should remain meaningful even after the garage has been entered.
Outbuildings and studios
Detached collection spaces may reduce exposure inside the home but create isolation, slower response, weaker walls, separate power and communications, and greater fire or flood risk.
A heavy security door in a lightweight wall is an unbalanced design.
Flats and communal access
Tailgating, propped doors, shared codes, parcel rooms, maintenance corridors and underground parking can weaken a perimeter the collector does not control.
Stronger flat-entry and collection-room containment may be justified where the communal boundary is unreliable.
Chapter 6
Access is operational, not merely mechanical
Many entry failures occur because a secure opening is deliberately opened, left unlocked, shared too widely or temporarily disabled. Hardware and procedures must be designed together.
Keys and credentials
A strong door is defeated by uncontrolled keys. Key custody is an operational system, not a minor household detail.
