Selecting a restorer is not a search for the person most able to make an object look better. It is a judgement about whether a particular practitioner can understand this particular object, identify what may be lost through intervention and carry out only the work that can be justified.
A highly skilled craftsperson can produce a beautiful repair while making poor conservation decisions. A professionally qualified conservator can be excellent within one material specialism and unsuitable outside it. Qualifications, experience and evidence therefore have to be assessed together, in relation to the object and the proposed commission.
Three forms of assurance, three different questions
Collectors often treat credentials, years of practice and portfolio images as if they all prove the same thing. They do not. Each contributes a different part of the case.

Qualifications show that a practitioner has completed recognised study, assessment or professional formation. They may demonstrate grounding in material science, deterioration, examination, ethics, treatment planning and documentation. They do not prove successful experience with your particular object.

The strongest candidate is the best fit, not the highest rank
Consider a rare painted tinplate toy. A university-trained paintings conservator may understand painted surfaces but lack experience of folded metal construction and mechanisms. A commercial toy restorer may have formidable reconstruction skills but routinely repaint for display. A metalwork conservator experienced in historic painted surfaces, working with a mechanical specialist where necessary, may offer the soundest combination. The purpose is not to rank practitioners generally; it is to establish fitness for one commission.
Professional titles describe roles imperfectly
Titles may be unprotected, inconsistently used or understood differently across regions. Investigate the individual behind the title and the philosophy behind the service.

Conservator-restorer
Usually trained to examine significance and condition, diagnose deterioration, compare treatment options and preserve original material while documenting what is done. The title still requires verification of specialism and current standing.
Broad title
Restorer
May describe a trained conservator-restorer, craft specialist, commercial repairer, refinisher, artist or largely self-taught practitioner. The word itself establishes neither competence nor treatment philosophy.
Process expertise
Craft specialist
May hold exceptional knowledge of clockmaking, cabinetmaking, gilding, ceramics, bookbinding, metalwork or another traditional process. Such expertise can be indispensable, but may not include conservation science, documentation or collector-market sensitivity.
Function-led
Repair technician
May be entirely appropriate for a modern, replaceable object where function is the principal concern. The collector must first decide whether the item is simply a possession to be repaired or also a historical artefact whose evidence must be retained.
Verify accreditation, membership and qualifications
Peer-reviewed accreditation can provide substantial reassurance because it normally tests competence, judgement and professional accountability. Ordinary membership may still be useful, but it is not the same thing. Confirm the current category directly with the professional organisation rather than relying on a website badge.
Check whether the status is current and belongs to the individual or only to a studio owner.
Identify who will actually examine, treat and document the object.
Ask what the qualification covered and what the practitioner's practical specialism was.
Distinguish conservation-restoration from adjacent study such as museum studies, fine art, art history, archaeology, design or materials science.
Allow for equivalent professional formation through supervised practice, apprenticeship and substantial responsible experience.
Experience must be object-specific, not merely material-specific
“Paper”, “metal” and “plastic” are not sufficient descriptions of specialist fit. A poster, trading card, photograph, pressure-sensitive label and papier-mâché object may all be paper-based yet demand different knowledge. Plastics can differ radically in polymer, additive, coating, manufacturing method and degradation pathway. Test the relevance of experience across several axes.

Ask for comparable cases, not a generic portfolio
Dramatic transformation photographs favour treatments that produce obvious visual change. They rarely show what was removed, covered, replaced or made harder to treat in future. A useful case study records the problem, examination findings, options considered, chosen objective, tests, materials, result, limitations and future care.
The most revealing question is: why is this case comparable?
Strong practitioners explain both similarity and difference. They may say that the case used the same lithographed metal construction but had less advanced corrosion, or that they have treated labels from the same period but not the same manufacturer.
That distinction demonstrates judgement. “I have repaired lots of things like this” does not.
Examination language reveals diagnostic quality
Remote photographs can support preliminary advice, but many treatment decisions require direct examination, magnification, handling and testing. Confidence is not competence; the way uncertainty is expressed is itself evidence.

The proposal is evidence of judgement
A written proposal is one of the strongest pieces of evidence available. It should identify the object, apparent materials, condition, risks, intended steps, purpose of each step, uncertainties, limitations, expected visual change, additions, removals, options, cost, timetable, documentation and the process for approving discoveries.

Surface-clean after sensitivity testing; reduce accessible active corrosion without disturbing surviving lithography; stabilise lifting decoration with a tested adhesive; retain stable staining and losses; exclude repainting and replacement; do not unfold original tabs without separate approval.
Test whether the practitioner recognises collector significance
Collector-important features can resemble defects to a general repairer: factory paint irregularities, labels, tax stamps, retailer marks, production codes, ownership names, patina, mould seams, casting flash, staple patterns, stitching, shrink-wrap seams, misprints, assembly errors and historically repaired areas.
Ask what the practitioner considers significant before supplying every answer. Then provide the provenance, known variants, previous ownership, intended use and market sensitivities required for informed treatment. Competence includes knowing what questions to ask the owner.
Limits, referrals and refusal are positive evidence
One of the strongest signs of competence is knowing where competence ends. A suitable practitioner should recognise when analysis, another specialist, environmental control or non-treatment is more appropriate than proceeding.

Presentation-led
Recover visual unity
Reconstruction, reinstatement of colour, filling and replacement may be used to return the object toward an interpreted earlier appearance. This can be legitimate when the extent and consequences are understood.
Function-led
Restore operation or structural use
Strength, safety and working performance take priority. Worn parts may be replaced and some original material sacrificed. This is a different objective, not simply a more complete version of conservation.
Six-axis assessment: a decision framework, not a scorecard
Review each candidate across six axes. Do not simply add points: a serious failure in one critical area can outweigh strengths elsewhere. Excellent craft skill, for example, cannot compensate for refusing to disclose what coating will be applied.
