Photographic Restoration Records
A photographic restoration record is a visual evidence chain, not a gallery of attractive before-and-after pictures. Properly made, it shows the object before intervention, the discoveries and decisions made during treatment, the location and extent of added material, and the condition from which future deterioration or retreatment must be judged.
The physical treatment may stabilise, repair or visually reintegrate a collectible. The photographic record preserves something different: knowledge of what was present, what changed and where the restorer's work begins. That distinction becomes critical when a skilful repair is no longer visible to an ordinary viewer.
Central collector principle
The purpose of restoration photography is not to celebrate transformation. It is to preserve the difference between the object's history and the restorer's intervention.

The object's condition before intervention
The record establishes what was damaged, missing, displaced, altered or previously repaired before cleaning, dismantling, consolidation or reconstruction changed the evidence.
Meaning
The reasoning and sequence of treatment
During-treatment images show discoveries, tests, hidden construction and decision points that a finished object can no longer reveal.
Collector risk
Restoration may later be mistaken for originality
Once fills, repainting, replacement parts or concealed joins become visually integrated, photographs may be the only durable way to separate surviving historic substance from later intervention.
Photography and the meaning of reversibility
Photographs do not make an irreversible treatment reversible. If original paint is removed, paper is bleached, a patina is stripped, a surface is polished or an original component is discarded, no image can recover the lost material. Documentation may record the loss with precision, but it cannot undo it.
What a strong record can provide is informational reversibility: the ability of a future custodian or conservator to reconstruct the logic, extent and sequence of the intervention. That knowledge can reduce the risk and cost of retreatment by showing hidden joins, internal pins, filled losses, retouching boundaries, retained old restoration and the reasons a treatment stopped where it did.
Material reversibility
Whether an added material, repair or component can be removed without unacceptable damage to the surviving object.
Informational reversibility
Whether future users can determine what was changed, where it lies, how it was done and what earlier state the treatment was responding to.
Preservation boundary
Documentation can make an intervention transparent, but it cannot justify avoidable destruction. A thoroughly photographed irreversible alteration remains irreversible. The record supports ethical judgement; it does not replace it.
The visual sequence
Three photographic stages, each preserving different evidence
A complete record needs the beginning, middle and end. The middle is often the most valuable stage and the one most commonly omitted, because it contains the evidence that will be hidden once the object is reassembled and visually integrated.
Before treatment
Create the irreplaceable baseline before any operation changes appearance, alignment, surface or component relationships.
- Full-object front, reverse, sides, top and underside as applicable
- Identifying marks, labels, inscriptions, stamps and serial details
- Every significant defect, vulnerable area and previous repair
- Fragment layouts and component relationships before movement
- Scale, orientation and colour reference where the feature requires them
What failure at this stage costs: A missed pre-treatment view cannot reliably be recreated after dirt, adhesive, fragments, folds, coatings or hidden surfaces have changed.
During treatment
Record the middle of the story: discoveries, tests, concealed structure, treatment boundaries and decisions that disappear on completion.
- Opened seams, internal supports, pins, armatures and reverse surfaces
- Old adhesive, overpaint, fills or repairs before and during removal
- Cleaned-versus-uncleaned tests and rejected treatment options
- Losses after cleaning but before filling or retouching
- Replacement components before installation and visual integration
What failure at this stage costs: Without this stage, a future conservator sees the result but not how it was made, where hidden risks lie or why one approach was chosen over another.
After treatment
Establish the new condition baseline and permit direct comparison with the pre-treatment record.
- Repeat the principal pre-treatment views from comparable positions
- Details of every treated area and any remaining damage
- Areas intentionally left untreated or only stabilised
- New mounts, frames, supports, housings or operating configurations
- Annotated images or treatment maps distinguishing additions and retouching
What failure at this stage costs: A flattering finished image may prove that the object looks coherent, but it does not necessarily disclose how much is original, restored, replaced or still vulnerable.
Collector scenario: the invisible ceramic repair
A ceramic figure appears intact after restoration. The final surface is coherent and the join line is almost invisible. Years later, a new conservator needs to separate the repair because the adhesive has yellowed.
A finished photograph is of limited help. A during-treatment sequence showing numbered fragments, the break edges, adhesive placement, internal steel pins, the fill before retouching and an annotated final map tells the conservator where force must not be applied and which visible surfaces are original. The record may prevent a successful old repair becoming a catastrophic new break.
Record photography is not promotional photography
Promotional images optimise visual impact: flattering angles, cleanliness, saturated colour and reduced visibility of damage. Conservation record images optimise comparability, identification, repeatability and disclosure. The two purposes can coexist, but a polished portfolio image must never substitute for technical evidence.
Presentation image
- Shows the object as it is intended to be viewed
- May use soft, attractive and visually forgiving light
- Communicates the finished appearance
- Useful for catalogues, display and client communication
Technical record image
- Shows the treatment as it needs to be understood
- Uses controlled and repeatable viewpoints and lighting
- Preserves repairs, damage, tests and treatment boundaries
- Supports comparison, retreatment and disclosure
How to judge whether a photographic record is dependable
Only dramatic before-and-after photographs
- No work-in-progress images
- No treatment boundaries
- No hidden structure or test areas
Collector judgement: The pair records appearance at two moments, not the intervention. It cannot explain materials, sequence, rejected options or concealed additions.
The comparison is visually inconsistent
- Different camera angle or crop
- Bright after image and dim before image
- Changed background, saturation or contrast
Collector judgement: The apparent improvement may partly be photographic. A conservation comparison should privilege repeatability over theatrical transformation.
The files have no durable identity
- Names such as IMG_4837.jpg
- No date, view or treatment stage
- No object number or link to the report
Collector judgement: Even technically excellent images become weak evidence if they can be detached from the correct object, sequence or treatment note.
Only thumbnails or social-media copies survive
- No full-resolution files
- Heavy compression or repeated JPEG resaving
- Images held only in an email thread or online account
Collector judgement: Fine evidence may be unrecoverable, and the record may disappear when a device, business or platform account is lost.
What makes an individual image technically useful
A photograph does not explain itself. A dark line may be a crack, mould line, pencil mark, join, vein, scratch or shadow. Every important image therefore needs enough context to identify the object, the stage of treatment and the feature being shown.
Minimum image identity
A caption that carries evidence
Reverse lower-right corner before treatment, showing a 24 mm tear extending from the edge and a discoloured pressure-sensitive tape repair across the tear. Raking light from the left reveals local planar distortion.
Compare that with “damage before restoration.” The longer caption allows a later reader to identify the location, scale, prior repair and lighting condition without relying on the memory of the person who made the image.
Scale, colour and orientation are part of the evidence
Scale
Use it where the size of a crack, loss, fragment, fill, corrosion area or treatment zone matters. Place it in the same plane as the feature to avoid perspective error.
Colour reference
A recognised target or grey reference helps assess white balance, exposure and later colour reproduction when fading, staining, yellowing, patina, pigment or retouching is evidentially important.
Orientation
Use consistent front, reverse, proper-right, proper-left, clockwise or plan-based labels. A future reader should never need to guess which edge or underside an image shows.
Lighting is a diagnostic tool, not decoration
The dependable overall record
Diffuse visible light
General appearance, colour, completeness and broad condition.
Surface and relief evidence
Raking light
Dents, distortion, raised paint, tears, cracks, texture, abrasion and boundaries between fills and original surfaces.
Thin and translucent materials
Transmitted light
Tears, thinning, joins, watermarks, internal cracks, fills and differences in density in paper, film, textiles, glass and thin plastics.
Material differentiation under controlled conditions
Ultraviolet-induced fluorescence
Some varnishes, coatings, adhesives, retouching, fills and biological deposits.
Fluorescence is material-specific. It is not automatic proof of restoration, and its absence is not proof of originality.
Infrared imaging, radiography, microscopy, reflectance transformation imaging and other analytical techniques are not routine requirements for every collectible. They become proportionate where hidden construction, authenticity, value or treatment risk justifies specialist examination.
Preserving the boundary between original and restored
One of the record's most important jobs is to show where original material ends and later work begins. The clearest evidence is often captured before the restoration is visually integrated: a cleaned loss before filling, a fill before inpainting, a replacement part before colour matching or a repaired tear before final finishing.
Untouched stage image
Records the intervention boundary at the moment it is most visible, before finishing disguises it.
Annotated photograph
Marks original material, retained old restoration, removed restoration, fills, retouching, consolidation and uncertain areas on a derivative copy.
Treatment map
Uses colours, patterns or numbered zones with a legend, date and author to describe categories of intervention across the object.
Hidden work needs explicit recording
Internal pins, armatures, screws, patches, backing fabrics, solder, inserted wood, wiring and adhesive beneath labels may be more consequential to future retreatment than the visible surface.
Photograph these additions before concealment. Where photography alone cannot locate them precisely, add dimensioned diagrams, annotated final images or radiographs.
Removed material can remain evidence
Original fragments, detached flakes, labels, screws, old fills, overpaint, coatings, fibres, corrosion products and analytical samples should not disappear from the record merely because they were removed. Photograph and describe them before disposal, and retain them in a labelled packet where they have evidential value.
The record should distinguish original material removed, later restoration removed, dirt or accretion removed, analytical samples and material of uncertain status. A photograph of unidentified debris preserves very little meaning.
Digital alteration and evidential integrity
Routine processing may include exposure or white-balance correction, lens correction, rotation, cropping, restrained sharpening and conversion from a raw file. These actions should not conceal, invent or materially distort object features.
Generally defensible
- Documented exposure and white-balance correction
- Lens correction, rotation and non-deceptive cropping
- Output sharpening appropriate to the derivative
- Separate interpretive enhancements clearly labelled as such
Evidentially dangerous
- Cloning out cracks, dust, reflections or support equipment
- Smoothing surfaces or altering edges
- Changing saturation to improve the apparent colour match
- Compositing exposures without disclosure
- Generative fill or AI enhancement that invents detail
A durable file structure
Original capture
The camera raw file or untouched source capture. This preserves the closest available record of what the camera recorded before interpretive editing.
Preservation master
A high-quality, minimally compressed and stable master used to preserve the evidential image without repeated editing and resaving.
Access derivative
A practical JPEG or equivalent for reports, databases, email, catalogues and routine viewing, produced from the master rather than replacing it.
Annotated derivative
A copy carrying labels, outlines, hatching or numbered zones. The unannotated master remains intact and the annotation includes a legend, date and author.
A low-resolution screenshot, messaging-app copy or thumbnail embedded in a PDF is not a preservation master. Resolution should be sufficient to identify the object, inspect treatment boundaries, read marks and compare later change. Digital enlargement creates pixels; it does not recover evidence that was never captured.
The camera record and the written report must remain joined
Each significant image should connect to a condition observation, treatment step, material, decision, uncertainty or future-care recommendation. Photographs show appearance; the report explains what the practitioner believed the image demonstrated and why it mattered.
The before-and-after illusion
A pair of images suggests a simple narrative: damaged object, skilled intervention, restored object. Real treatment is rarely that linear.
The completed object may combine original material, retained historic repairs, new restoration, replacement components, stabilised damage, intentionally visible losses and unresolved uncertainty. The middle of the photographic sequence preserves that complexity.
Before commissioning work
A collector's photographic documentation checklist
- 1The object will be photographed before cleaning, dismantling, flattening, humidification or any other appearance-changing operation.
- 2All significant defects, prior repairs, marks, labels and identifying features will be recorded.
- 3Discoveries, tests, failed trials and irreversible decision points will be photographed during treatment.
- 4Hidden supports, joins, pins, armatures, wiring, patches and backing materials will be recorded before concealment.
- 5Fills, replacement parts and reconstructed areas will be photographed before retouching or visual integration.
- 6Post-treatment views will reproduce the principal pre-treatment viewpoints as closely as practical.
- 7The restored regions will be identified through captions, annotated images or a treatment map.
- 8The photographs will be linked to written observations, materials, methods, uncertainties and treatment steps.
- 9The collector will receive full-resolution files, not only thumbnails embedded in a report.
- 10Copyright, reuse rights, retention periods and the right to pass the record to future custodians are clear.
What should remain in the permanent archive
The archive should remain findable, readable, correctly associated, unaltered and transferable. It should not exist solely on a restorer's phone, in an email chain, in a private social-media account, on one USB drive or inside a low-resolution report.
How photographic records affect provenance, authenticity and value
Provenance
Images may establish that a component, inscription, fragment, replacement or condition existed at a particular time and entered the object's history during a documented treatment.
Authenticity
They can help distinguish original components from replacements, manufacturing joins from repair joins and genuine wear from recreated distressing, but must be read with the written record.
Valuation
They help a valuer understand surviving original material, pre-treatment damage, structural versus cosmetic work, replacement extent and remaining vulnerability. The images inform value; they do not set it.
Disclosure at sale
Treatment photographs are not embarrassing evidence to conceal. Transparent records can increase confidence by showing the extent of surviving material, the quality of the intervention and the absence of hidden structural surprises.
A public listing need not reproduce the entire archive, but a serious buyer, valuer or specialist should be able to inspect the principal pre-treatment condition, relevant treatment-stage images, a map of substantial additions and the completed object.
Material-specific priorities
Ceramics and glass
Record all fragments, break edges, old staples or adhesive, internal pins, fills before retouching, replaced sections and cracks under raking or transmitted light.
Toys, figures and models
Record original paint, stress whitening, replaced limbs or accessories, internal joints, sculpted fills, repaint boundaries, reproduction decals and recreated packaging parts.
Books, comics and paper collectibles
Record tears, tape, stains, trimming, washing, infills, leaf casting, colour retouching, spine replacement, cover reattachment and removed annotations.
Posters and printed ephemera
Photograph before backing removal, washing, flattening, linen backing, filling, airbrushing or image reconstruction, because the final display surface can conceal extensive work.
Coins, medals and metal objects
Record corrosion, encrustation, scratches, tool marks, plating, lacquer, solder, straightening and replaced fittings under consistent lighting.
Furniture and wooden objects
Record construction, joints, undersides, backs, old hardware, veneer, inserted wood, finish tests, stripped areas and internal reinforcement.
Textiles and costumes
Record front and reverse, seams, linings, patches, darns, losses, fading, support fabrics, adhesive treatments and mounts, including close views of nearly invisible support stitching.
Electronic and mechanical collectibles
Record wiring, circuit boards, markings, connectors, fasteners, lubrication points and replacement components before disassembly. Add video where movement, sound or intermittent function matters.
When still photography needs video
Still images remain easier to cite, compare, print and annotate. Video is a supplement where evidence depends on movement, sound, sequence, flexibility, flicker or intermittent failure. It can document clockwork toys, automata, musical objects, electronic games, articulated figures and objects with moving display systems.
Important conditions and components should still be captured as high-resolution photographs. A long video should not become the only place where a crucial crack, connector or replacement part can be found.
Post-treatment photography begins condition monitoring
Completion images create the baseline for later monitoring. Repeated photography can reveal renewed cracking, adhesive failure, movement across joins, discolouration of fills, visible retouching, returning corrosion, deformation, fading, staining, pest activity or mount failure.
Control the viewpoint, distance, lens, lighting, exposure, background and colour reference. Otherwise a difference between images may reflect photography rather than physical change.
Myth versus reality
Myth
A before-and-after pair is a complete restoration record.
Reality
It records appearance at two points but usually omits hidden work, materials, treatment boundaries, tests and decision-making.
Myth
Photographs make a treatment reversible.
Reality
They provide informational reversibility. Material reversibility still depends on what was added, removed or altered and whether it can be safely undone.
Myth
The best final photograph makes the repair invisible.
Reality
A presentation image may minimise visual disruption, but technical photography must preserve enough evidence to locate and understand the repair.
Myth
More photographs automatically mean better documentation.
Reality
A smaller, indexed and well-captioned sequence can be more useful than hundreds of unidentified files.
Myth
Photographs are objective.
Reality
Angle, light, exposure, lens, editing, crop and selection all affect what can be seen and what may be concealed.
When professional documentation becomes essential
The greater the value, concealment, irreversibility or uncertainty, the stronger the documentation threshold should be. Professional conservation photography becomes particularly important when any of the following apply:
- The object is rare, highly valuable or materially sensitive to originality.
- Extensive replacement, reconstruction, repainting or image reintegration is proposed.
- Treatment will conceal damage, construction or the boundary between original and added material.
- Dismantling will expose inaccessible structures that may never again be visible.
- Removal of a previous restoration may itself be irreversible.
- Pigments, coatings, surfaces, plastics, papers or adhesives are unstable or poorly understood.
- Authenticity, attribution, insurance, legal evidence or a warranty dispute may depend on the record.
- The object may enter an institutional loan, exhibition, publication or acquisition process.
Final collector judgement
A strong photographic restoration record lets a future custodian say: this was the object before treatment; this evidence emerged during treatment; this material is original; this is an earlier repair; this was added in the documented intervention; this is how the appearance was reintegrated; and this is what may, or may not, be safely removed later.
Without that chain, an accomplished restoration may gradually be mistaken for original manufacture. The loss is not merely documentary. The object loses part of the truth about its own material history.
