Minimum intervention does not mean the smallest quantity of work. A token repair that fails and must be repeated can create more cumulative risk than one well-designed treatment.

Record baseline condition, options considered, materials used, altered areas, uncertainty, expected ageing, review intervals and warning signs that require the object to be withdrawn from display or use.

Which authenticity matters here?

Authenticity is not a simple percentage of original material. It can reside in design, workmanship, surface, use wear, provenance, historic change, continuity of function, association or accumulated repair.

A mass-produced collectible may depend heavily on factory finish, decals, packaging and untouched assembly. A working instrument may derive meaning from operation. An archaeological object may retain important deposits. A family heirloom may be inseparable from an old repair or inscription. Value and disclosure

A visually improved object is not automatically a financially improved object

Restoration can improve presentation, structural security, usability and saleability. It can also reduce value by altering original finish, replacing scarce components, obscuring evidence or moving an object out of the condition category valued by its collecting field. The result depends on rarity, customary practice, workmanship, extent, visibility and disclosure.

Fields may tolerate different work

Restricted retouching may be accepted in paintings; repainting a rare tin toy may sharply reduce appeal. Sympathetic furniture repair may be expected; a replacement vintage watch dial may be contentious.

Clear before, during and after records allow buyers and valuers to judge the work. Invisible, undocumented restoration introduces uncertainty even where workmanship is excellent.
