Object-Based Evidence

Object-based evidence is information obtained directly from a collectible's physical characteristics. The object is treated as a primary research source: not merely as an illustration of what a book, catalogue, seller or database has already said, but as a surviving record of how something was made, marked, assembled, distributed, used, altered and preserved.

This evidence can support identification, dating, attribution, authentication, completeness, variant research, condition assessment and provenance. It can confirm a written record, contradict it, fill a gap or reveal a physical state that no surviving document mentions. Its closeness to the object makes it powerful, but not self- interpreting: a mark may be later, a box may be married to different contents, wear may reflect storage rather than age, and one anomalous example may prove only that a difference exists.

Collector scenario

When the object complicates the paperwork

A boxed set arrives with a receipt and an auction description calling it complete, sealed and early. The outer box is correct for the period, but the tray uses a later construction, one insert is noticeably cleaner than the others, and the seal crosses a retailer label that should have been applied after distribution.

None of those observations alone proves fraud or even error. Together, they change the question. The paperwork may still support the broad identity, while the object weakens the claims of untouched contents, original configuration and exact issue. Responsible research preserves that tension instead of choosing whichever source sounds more authoritative.

Written sources often preserve intention, advertising, ordering or memory. The physical object records what was actually produced and what subsequently happened to this example. Thinking in terms of an object biography helps prevent manufacture, ownership and later alteration from being collapsed into one undifferentiated story.

Each stage may leave evidence, but not every trace dates the whole object. A mould code may date tooling, a leaflet may date that leaflet, a retailer label may date a sale route, and a repair may date only an intervention. The first discipline is to ask which layer of the biography a clue belongs to.

A surviving example may confirm a documented component count, show that the production object differed from an advertised prototype, reveal an undocumented printing state or expose later substitution.

One object can prove that a physical state exists. It cannot by itself prove that the state was intentional, factory-produced, widely distributed, earlier than another state or deserving of separate catalogue status.

The presence of a screw, label, paper stock, repair or colour difference is an observation. Its meaning depends on relevance to the claim, integrity of association, comparison and corroboration.

Recognition

What counts as object-based evidence

Object study is more than checking a logo or serial number. It examines a connected system of material, manufacture, scale, marking, surface, internal structure, packaging, wear and intervention. Each category can produce strong evidence, but each also has characteristic ways of misleading the collector.

Substance

Materials

Paper, board, inks, pigments, plastics, resins, metals, woods, textiles, leather, ceramics, glass, rubber, foam, adhesives, coatings and electronic components can constrain period, process, maker or later intervention. Material identification becomes historical evidence only when it is tied to a meaningful comparison.

  • Record what appears to be present before naming a material with certainty.
  • Distinguish the material of the main object from packaging, repairs and replacement parts.
  • Remember that a later material may disprove an early date even when it cannot identify the true maker.

Making

Construction and manufacturing technique

Mould seams, injection points, tool marks, casting, stitching, binding, fasteners, soldering, welds, joinery, lamination, die cutting, printing and hand-finishing may be more diagnostic than outward design. They can separate production states, workshops, factories, repairs and reconstructions.

  • Examine how components meet, not only how the finished object looks.
  • Ask whether the process was available and normal in the claimed place and period.
  • Treat an unfamiliar technique as a research question, not immediate proof of counterfeit manufacture.

Scale

Dimensions, weight and tolerances

Height, width, depth, thickness, weight, spacing and component fit can expose trimming, shrinkage, different tooling, regional manufacture or replacement. Precision must be proportionate to the production method: one millimetre may matter in a moulded part and mean little in a hand-cut insert.

  • Record the instrument, unit, precision and exact measurement point.
  • Note warping, incompleteness or compression that may distort the result.
  • Compare like with like rather than mixing formats, regions or conditions.

Identification

Marks, codes and inscriptions

Maker marks, trademarks, copyright lines, patent numbers, printer keys, serials, batch codes, retailer labels, export marks and ownership inscriptions may belong to different moments in the object's life. Wording matters, but so do position, typeface, application method and relationship to coatings or seams.

  • A copyright date may date wording or design rather than manufacture or sale.
  • A genuine label may be later, transferred or attached to a replaced component.
  • Record spelling, punctuation, orientation, depth, colour and signs of later application.

Appearance

Surface, finish and colour

Paint layers, ink density, gloss, plating, varnish, grain, overprinting, overspray, polishing and masking boundaries may reveal production or intervention. Colour is especially unstable evidence because it can change through substrate, ink batch, fading, oxidation, heat, staining, photography and screen display.

  • Describe the difference before calling it a colour variant.
  • Compare under consistent lighting and, where necessary, include a colour reference.
  • Look for protected areas that show how the exposed surface may have changed.

Hidden evidence

Internal structure

Hidden mould codes, fasteners, watermarks, backing boards, bindings, package inserts, reinforcement, underlayers and assembly order may carry stronger evidence than the visible face. The need to see inside does not justify opening or dismantling an object that may be harmed.

  • Begin with non-invasive light, magnification and photography.
  • Record what cannot be examined safely rather than forcing access.
  • Escalate where the answer requires opening, sampling or specialist imaging.

Retail history

Packaging and component relationships

Boxes, sleeves, trays, wraps, seals, labels, inserts and protective materials can identify market, period, distributor, contents or campaign. Yet period-correct components can be separated and recombined. Correct type and original association are different questions.

  • Ask whether each component is period-correct in its own right.
  • Then ask whether the components have always belonged together.
  • Use fit, wear, ageing, provenance and repeated secure examples to test the relationship.

Life history

Wear, damage and intervention

Page turning, edge wear, rubbed controls, stress marks, writing, staining, mounting traces, fading and compression may reveal use or storage. Repairs, overpainting, fresh solder, replacement paper, polishing and reconstructed packaging record later events. They should be interpreted as part of the object's biography, not simply scored as defects.

  • Functionally patterned wear is usually more informative than general age appearance.
  • Separate manufacture defects, distribution damage, use damage, storage deterioration and deliberate modification where possible.
  • A restored area is evidence of restoration, not untouched original manufacture.

Low-risk action versus damaging intervention

Examination must not consume the evidence it is trying to understand

Safe observation, measurement, photography and non-invasive lighting are normally the collector's first tools. Opening sealed packaging, removing a label, scraping a coating, burn-testing a fibre, applying solvents or dismantling a mechanism may destroy evidence, reduce value and still produce an ambiguous result.

Where the answer depends on sampling, hidden construction, unstable material or treatment-sensitive surfaces, record the limitation and escalate. An unresolved question is preferable to an irreversible amateur test.

Reasoning

Separate observation, inference and conclusion

Collectors commonly move from a visible difference straight to a confident story: the logo is different, therefore earlier; the plastic is darker, therefore rare; the staple is rusty, therefore old; the package is sealed, therefore untouched. The disciplined record keeps three layers separate.

Layer 1

Observation

What can be directly seen, measured, heard or otherwise recorded without explaining it. Example: a white rectangular area measuring 31 × 18 mm lies beneath the present rear price label.

Layer 2

Inference

A plausible explanation of the observation. Example: an earlier label may have shielded that area from fading.

Layer 3

Conclusion

A judgement supported by the observation, comparison and other evidence. Example: the current label was probably applied after prolonged display because the surrounding board is faded and older adhesive residue remains underneath.

Write findings so that later researchers can disagree productively

A conclusion such as “first printing” is fragile when the supporting observation has disappeared from the record. A reproducible note links the claim to location, method, comparison and uncertainty: “printer key 10 9 8 7 6 5, lower centre of copyright page, examined directly at 5× magnification; same sequence recorded on examples A, C and D; consistent with fifth printing; moderate confidence because reuse of the plate has not been excluded.”

This form does not make the conclusion weaker. It makes its strength visible and allows new evidence to revise it without erasing the route by which it was reached.

Method

A systematic collector examination

The sequence below is deliberately slower than matching an object to a guide image. It protects the object, reduces confirmation bias and produces an evidence trail that another collector can inspect.

Define the research question

Do not begin with the unlimited question, ‘What is this?’ Decide what claim needs testing. The question determines which physical features matter and prevents every unusual detail from becoming equally significant.

  • Is this a first or later printing?
  • Are these contents original to this box?
  • Is the colour difference intentional, deteriorated or photographic?
  • Was this surface repainted or retouched?
  • Is the mark contemporary with the object?

Prepare safe examination conditions

Use a clean, stable surface, neutral lighting and suitable support. Photograph the object before manipulation. Remove food and drink, avoid unnecessary flexing and do not clean merely to make evidence easier to see.

Gloves are material-dependent rather than universally safer. Reduced dexterity or snagging can create new damage. Stable paper may often be handled with clean, dry hands, while nitrile gloves may be appropriate for metals, photographs, contaminants or chemically sensitive surfaces.

Record the object as received

Preserve the starting state before research, comparison or reassembly changes it. Keep seller claims and supplied attributions separate from your own findings so that borrowed certainty does not become invisible.

Survey the whole object

Begin without magnification. Record overall form, proportions, apparent materials, construction, completeness, colour, major marks, condition and unusual features. Do not start by hunting for the expected diagnostic mark; that encourages confirmation bias.

Examine component by component

Treat the main object, packaging, removable parts, instructions, accessories, labels, fasteners, inserts, protective materials and later additions as separate evidence units. A single binary judgement such as ‘all original’ is often too blunt.

Use non-destructive examination first

Diffuse light, raking light, transmitted light, magnification and macro photography can reveal surface deformation, retouching, watermarks, fibres, repairs and printing processes without taking the object apart. More advanced imaging or material analysis may be useful, but technical output still requires historical interpretation.

Compare like with like

Comparison gives an observation meaning. Prefer securely documented, provenance-rich or unopened examples and multiple independently sourced specimens. Control for region, date, factory, product type, package format, condition and restoration.

Repeated online photographs are not independent examples when listings copy images or the same object circulates through several sellers.

Form competing hypotheses

For each preferred explanation, name at least one credible alternative. Good research attempts to disprove the attractive answer rather than merely collecting details that support it.

  • Different ink: separate printing, fading, substrate or normal ink variation?
  • Different screw: production change, repair or owner replacement?
  • Missing mark: early state, wear, removal or incomplete application?
  • Unusual seam: counterfeit manufacture, alternate tooling or another factory?

Correlate with other source types

Object evidence is strongest when it converges with manufacturer records, catalogues, advertisements, patents, production photographs, museum collections, receipts, auction records, oral histories and specialist testimony. The aim is not to choose a universally superior source, but to discover where independent evidence agrees and where it remains in tension.

State the conclusion at the right confidence

Use language that matches the actual evidence: confirmed, strongly supported, probable, consistent with, possible, unresolved, contradicted or disproven. A useful conclusion names the supporting features, the comparison base and the reason certainty stops where it does.

Judgement

How much weight should the object carry?

Physical evidence is not automatically superior to documentary evidence. Its strength depends on whether the feature is relevant to the claim, whether the evidence remains physically intact, whether the comparison is controlled and whether alternative explanations survive.

Strong object-based evidence

The feature is relevant to the claim, difficult to alter, repeated independently and supported by production or documentary context.

  • Several secure examples share the feature.
  • A known manufacturing sequence explains it.
  • Provenance limits substitution or later assembly.
  • Scientific analysis excludes incompatible later material.
  • The conclusion survives credible alternative explanations.

Moderate object-based evidence

The observation is clear, but its meaning or representativeness remains incomplete.

  • One well-documented example carries the feature.
  • The comparison group is small.
  • Provenance is incomplete.
  • Non-destructive examination cannot resolve hidden construction.
  • More than one explanation remains plausible.

Weak or misleading evidence

The evidence is remote from the object, poorly controlled, easily altered or inherited from unverified claims.

  • Judgement based only on processed online photographs or memory.
  • Seller wording is treated as physical fact.
  • Wear is assumed to prove age or a seal to prove untouched contents.
  • Restored, married or deliberately aged examples are used as the baseline.
  • Measurements, regions or production periods are mixed without control.

Convergence is stronger than source hierarchy

The object shows what physically survives and how it appears to have been made. A manufacturer record may establish intention or a production date but describe a plan rather than distributed output. A catalogue supplies terminology but may inherit an old error. A museum record may be professionally managed but preserve a donor attribution. An auction record shows market appearance but may be commercially framed.

Credible conclusions emerge when independent evidence categories converge. Where they do not, the disagreement belongs in the record. The tension may reveal a changed object, a prototype, a later assembly, an outdated classification or an undocumented production state.

Variation and risk

From difference to warning sign or variant

Object comparison generates differences quickly. The difficult work is deciding whether a difference is ordinary variation, evidence that the claimed identity is wrong, or a repeatable production state worthy of separate recognition.

Normal variation

Difference without a separate production identity

Manufacturing tolerances, ink batches, hand-finishing, substrate variation, ageing and storage can produce real differences between otherwise equivalent objects. A difference may be observable and collectible without representing a distinct catalogue state.

Warning sign

Difference that conflicts with the claimed object

An impossible material, modern printing process, incompatible fastener, misaligned ageing pattern or component that does not physically fit the production sequence may contradict the claim. Negative evidence can sometimes disprove more securely than positive resemblance can prove.

Potential variant

Repeatable and historically meaningful production difference

A useful variant is observable, describable, repeatable, separable from condition and owner modification, and connected to production, distribution, regulation or a documented change. One object proves that a state exists; it does not alone prove why, when or how widely it existed.

Before naming an anomaly as a variant

  1. Can the feature be reproduced across multiple independent examples?
  2. Does it appear in unopened or otherwise securely associated copies?
  3. Could fading, damage, repair or exchanged components explain it?
  4. Does it fall within ordinary manufacturing tolerance?
  5. Does it correspond to a known production, regional or regulatory change?
  6. Is there evidence that the state entered distribution rather than remaining a one-off error?

A one-off manufacturing error can be genuine and collectible without becoming a catalogue-level variant. Variation describes any physical difference; variant describes a distinct and historically meaningful production or distribution state.

Myth versus reality

“It looks old.”

Storage can preserve old objects exceptionally well or deteriorate recent ones rapidly. Artificial wear can be added, and genuinely old components can be used in a deceptive composite.

“It is sealed.”

Seals may be recreated, lifted, replaced or applied by retailers and distributors. A seal is a physical feature whose origin and relationship must be researched.

“It matches the book.”

The guide may have relied on a misidentified example or used a category too broadly. A match supports comparison; it does not end source evaluation.

“Scientific testing proves authenticity.”

Testing may identify composition or rule out a claimed date. Authenticity remains an interpretive conclusion combining technical, historical, comparative and provenance evidence.

Collector distinctions

Do not collapse authenticity, originality, completeness and condition

These judgements often influence one another, but they answer different questions. Keeping them separate produces more honest descriptions and prevents a visually impressive object from being treated as untouched, or an incomplete object from being dismissed as poor evidence.

Authenticity

Is the object what it claims to be?

Materials, processes, markings and chronology must be consistent with the claimed maker, period and production. Authenticity is not guaranteed by one correct mark or by age appearance.

Originality

Which surviving parts belong to the original production state?

Originality should be assessed by component. The main object may be original while paint, fasteners, packaging, instructions or wrap have different statuses.

Completeness

Are all expected components present?

Completeness does not prove original association. A complete set may have been assembled from several sources, while an incomplete set may preserve exceptionally secure original relationships.

Condition

What has physically survived, deteriorated or been altered?

Condition describes present state and evidence of change. A visually excellent restored object can be less original than a heavily worn untouched one. Condition and evidential value overlap but are not interchangeable.

Preserve a reproducible object evidence record

Physical evidence can detach, fade, be cleaned, be repaired or become separated from its context. The collector's record should preserve both what was observed and how the observation supported the later conclusion.

Photograph context before detail

A diagnostic close-up is useful only when the viewer can locate it on the object and understand its relationship to surrounding surfaces or components. Record the whole object, the clue in context and the close detail. Include scale where measurement matters and preserve original image files rather than retaining only an edited or compressed version.

Repeat condition and evidence photography when the object changes. A sequence of records can show whether fading, corrosion, adhesive movement, deformation or component separation occurred before or after acquisition.

Collection numbers, bookplates, shipping labels and mounting traces can support provenance, but they require documentary correlation and association testing. Physical and documentary provenance should validate one another.

Specialist threshold

When the collector should stop and escalate

Specialist help is warranted when answering the question would endanger the object, exceed ordinary visual examination or carry consequences that require defensible technical expertise.

  • Examination would require opening, dismantling, scraping or sampling.
  • The object may contain hazardous substances, active corrosion, mould, pests or unstable materials.
  • A coating obscures an inscription or previous surface and removal could destroy evidence.
  • Restoration, retouching or replacement cannot be distinguished safely by ordinary examination.

A conservator may advise on safe handling and material stability; a conservation scientist may identify composition or imaging options; a category specialist may provide controlled comparisons and production knowledge. None should be asked to answer beyond the limits of their evidence, and technical results should remain connected to the exact research question.
