Unidentified at which level?
Unknown is not one condition. Identification can fail at the level of maker, product, date, function, variant or relationship. Naming the unresolved layer makes the record more precise and determines the next research step.
Identity unresolved
Completely unidentified
Little is known beyond the object's physical existence. Even here, form, material, dimensions, construction, marks and condition can still be recorded. 'Unidentified' is the research status; it is not an adequate description of the object.
Broad class known
Type known, exact product unknown
The collector may know that the item is a game counter, camera accessory, ceramic plate, miniature figure or military badge, while the precise product, set, unit or compatible model remains unresolved.
Creator partly known
Maker known, product unknown
A logo, signature or mould mark may identify a manufacturer or workshop without identifying the exact model, pattern, release or date. A maker mark narrows the field; it does not finish the identification.
Family known
Product line known, variant unresolved
The object may belong to a known series but still resist exact version identification because accessories, moulds, sleeves, components or printings were shared across releases or territories.
Purpose unresolved
Function unknown
The maker or period may be known while the object's intended use remains uncertain. Factory tools, packaging inserts, technical adapters, promotional pieces and components removed from larger assemblies often fall into this category.
Relationship unresolved
Association unknown
The object itself may be recognisable, but its relationship to nearby material is not. It could be an original component, later replacement, separately sold accessory, packaging support, reproduction or unrelated item stored with the collection.
Competing explanations
Attribution disputed
Several plausible identities may survive comparison without any one being sufficiently supported. This is not total ignorance: a disputed object can have a strong shortlist with clearly recorded arguments for and against each candidate.
Old certainty withdrawn
Formerly identified, now uncertain
An inherited label, seller description, auction entry or old inventory may exist, but later examination may expose contradictions. Reverting to an uncertain status is often more accurate than preserving a confident name that no longer withstands scrutiny.
