The collector problem is that leather is not a single condition. Collector scenario: the dry case that should not be fed
A collector opens a leather instrument case and sees cracking, dullness, white bloom near the hinges and a musty smell. The domestic-care instinct is to wipe it down, apply leather conditioner and try to make it supple again. That instinct comes from maintaining working leather, not preserving a collectible object.
The case may also contain labels, maker marks, dust lines, impressions, old repairs, metal corrosion, brittle stitching, textile lining, cardboard stiffeners and residues from a previous dressing. Conditioner may darken the leather, move dirt into cracks, stain the lining, soften adhesives, disturb tooling, react with bloom, alter odour and make future conservation harder. The first preservation act is not feeding the leather. It is reading the object, supporting its current shape and deciding whether the surface should be left alone, isolated, documented or assessed by a specialist.
Understanding leather as a flexible organic material

A leather object is often a mixed-material object

The preservation decision must protect the most vulnerable component, not the most visible one. Leather cleaner may stain lining. Metal polish may contaminate leather. Do not try to make old leather behave like new leather
Collectors often overvalue renewed suppleness because it feels like recovery. In preservation terms, a temporarily softer object may be more altered, more stained, less evidential and harder to stabilise later. Historic leather is not alive and cannot be fed back to health.
The safer aim is slower deterioration: stable storage, moderate humidity, reduced handling, shape support, breathable barriers, pest monitoring, no casual wet cleaning, no domestic conditioners and careful documentation before any irreversible intervention.
Leather, suede and skin are not interchangeable

Can the object safely move?
Do not test condition by use. Avoid trying on gloves, wearing jackets, buckling belts, lacing boots, zipping stiff bags or flexing holsters simply to see what happens.
What exactly is the surface?
Original finish, later polish, wax, dye, gilt, paint, suede nap, dirt, bloom, mould and degradation can look similar. Cleaning before identification may remove the evidence needed to interpret it.
What is the weakest material present?
Leather may not be the limiting factor. Lining, paper labels, card stiffeners, adhesives, corroding fittings, wool stitching, fur trim or unstable foam may govern the safe action.
What shape can it hold now?
Support the shape the object can safely tolerate today, not the shape it had when new. Avoid hard creases, tight coils, forced stuffing and display postures that load weak areas.
Storage and handling as the main preservation treatment
Use environment as treatment before adding treatment
Most safe leather preservation is preventive. A moderate, stable domestic environment is usually safer than attics, garages, sheds, damp basements, conservatories, airing cupboards, car storage or sealed boxes in rooms with large temperature swings. Extremes matter more than chasing a perfect number.
Very dry conditions promote cracking and stiffness. Damp conditions promote mould, corrosion, tackiness, dye movement and distortion. Heat accelerates chemical deterioration. Light fades dyes and weakens finishes. Clean airflow reduces the risk of stale, damp microclimates.
Support shape without forcing shape
Bags, shoes, gloves, boots, pouches and cases often need internal support more than surface improvement. Use soft, inert, breathable materials to reduce collapse, but avoid forcing old leather back to factory shape. Over-stuffing can stretch seams, stain linings, distort creases and create new pressure points.
Belts and straps should not be tightly coiled or buckled under tension. Heavy objects should not hang from old handles, shoulder straps, loops or weak seams. Garments may need broad padded hangers if structurally sound, but weak or heavy leather garments are often safer stored flat with support.
Separate leather from unstable neighbours
Leather can stain paper, corrode metal, absorb odours and carry oils or dressings into adjacent material. Avoid direct contact with newspaper, acidic board, PVC, rubber, pressure-sensitive tape, unstable foam, sticky labels, damp textiles, corroding metal and scented or oily products.
Breathable archival barriers such as acid-free tissue, washed cotton, Tyvek or inert supports can reduce abrasion and migration. Do not seal suspect, damp, musty, sticky or mould-affected leather in plastic, because the enclosure can create a damaging microclimate.

Suede garments

Do not test by trying them on

Look for cracked vamps, curled uppers, sole separation, salt stains, mould inside shoes, collapsed heels, corroded nails and powdering linings. Do not wear, polish or relace under tension.

Support from inside without overstuffing. Do not hang by handles. Keep clasps unstrained and check linings, frames, corners, hinges, adhesive failure and dye transfer.

Cracks around holes, rivets, loops and bends are structural warnings. Store unbuckled where safe, in gentle curves or flat, and avoid tight coils.
