When stabilisation should be the final treatment
Not every object should be restored. Stabilisation alone may be preferable where restoration would remove historically significant evidence, the original appearance is uncertain, too little original material survives, reconstruction would be speculative, treatment risk is excessive or safe storage already addresses the preservation need.
A stabilised fragment, faded package, worn working object or visibly repaired collectible may tell a more truthful story than a visually complete reconstruction. Preservation is not obliged to erase age.
