Mounts, Sleeves, Albums and Enclosures
For paper, card and photographic collectibles, an enclosure is not merely packaging. It is the object's immediate environment: the surface touching it, the structure supporting it, the barrier separating it from dust and handling, and sometimes the container holding the only surviving evidence of order, ownership or intended presentation.
A good enclosure reduces handling, abrasion, flexing, edge damage, light exposure and contact with unsuitable shelving or neighbouring objects. A poor one can introduce pressure, static, acidity, adhesive migration, plasticizer transfer, trapped moisture, sticking, distortion and concealed deterioration. Even a chemically stable material can become damaging when the fit, seam, orientation or method of access is wrong.
The collector's task is therefore not to buy the product with the strongest archival claim. It is to understand the relationship between object, enclosure and use: what the object is made from, how its surface behaves, how often it must be accessed, what evidence the old housing carries, and whether the proposed enclosure allows future inspection without forcing intervention.
COLLECTOR SCENARIO
the album that is both hazard and evidence
A collector acquires a family photograph album with brittle black pages, browned interleaving, handwritten captions and several prints held under tight corners. Some photographs show edge silvering; others are lifting from old adhesive. The obvious modernising impulse is to remove every print and place it in a new photo-safe album.
But the album is not only a storage system. Its sequence may establish chronology. Captions may identify people. Empty spaces may show what has been lost. The page design may reveal relationships between photographs, and the binding may be an artefact in its own right. Immediate wholesale removal could reduce one form of risk while destroying context and causing mechanical damage.
The correct response is staged: document the album as found, identify active hazards, stabilise loose components, decide whether the album can remain intact, and separate only where the benefit clearly outweighs the physical and evidential cost.
The six judgements behind every enclosure
The best housing decision is rarely a material choice alone. It is a combined judgement about purpose, fit, compatibility, evidence, access and environment.
FUNCTION
Protection must solve a defined problem
Choose housing to reduce a known risk: handling, bending, abrasion, light, dust, chemical contact, movement, loss of fragments or unsafe access. Vague over-protection often creates tight sleeves, overloaded albums and sealed microclimates.
FIT
Correct material can still be wrongly sized
A sleeve that compresses corners, a box that forces a binding, or a mount that presses raised media is damaging even when the material itself is conservation grade.
COMPATIBILITY
The object decides what is safe
Plain paper, glossy photographs, friable media, acetate film, glass plates and composite albums do not have identical enclosure needs. Process, surface and condition matter more than category labels.
EVIDENCE
Old housing may belong to the history
Mounts, captions, sleeve numbers, labels, dealer marks, album order and original cases can carry provenance and meaning. Rehousing should preserve the information even when harmful contact must end.
ACCESS
Safe storage must also permit safe retrieval
An enclosure that requires flexing, scraping, peeling or repeated dismantling turns every consultation into a preservation event. Access design is part of conservation design.
ENVIRONMENT
An enclosure cannot rescue a bad room
A PAT-tested sleeve in a hot loft, damp cellar or sunlit display still leaves the object at risk. Housing is one layer within temperature, humidity, light, cleanliness and pest control.
Reading preservation claims critically
Why 'archival' is not a full specification
Archival, acid-free, museum quality and photo safe are useful prompts, not complete answers. A meaningful specification identifies the exact paper, board or plastic; whether paper is lignin-free; whether it is buffered or unbuffered; whether adhesives are present; and whether photographic materials have passed the Photographic Activity Test.
Acid-free usually describes a material's acidity at manufacture. It does not by itself establish long-term stability, freedom from lignin, safe additives, good adhesive chemistry, photographic compatibility or adequate strength. For photographic materials, a PAT-tested product provides a more relevant indication of likely interaction than an unsupported marketing claim.
Buffered and unbuffered paper are choices, not quality grades
Buffered paper contains an alkaline reserve intended to neutralise acids introduced during manufacture or ageing. It is often useful for many modern documents, acidic wood-pulp papers, newspapers and numerous black-and-white photographic materials.
Unbuffered neutral paper may be preferred for processes or components that could be altered by alkalinity, including some cyanotypes, colour photographs, sensitive dyes and historic photographic processes. The rule is not that one is superior. The correct choice follows process identification, condition and current specialist guidance.
Paper and plastic enclosure materials
These are not rankings. Each material earns its place only when it matches the object's surface, condition, use and need for environmental exchange.
Conservation paper and board
Best suited to: Fragile sheets, light-sensitive objects, friable surfaces, labelled folders, albums and outer boxes.
STRENGTHS
- +Provides a soft, low-static surface.
- +Can block light and offer a writable identification surface.
- +Allows more gas exchange than low-permeability plastic.
- +Can be formed into folders that open fully rather than requiring sliding removal.
CAUTIONS
- !Opaque housings require removal for viewing.
- !Poor stock may transfer acidity or fibres.
- !Tight envelopes can catch tears and abrade surfaces.
- !Paper is not a cure for damp or mould-contaminated storage.
Polyester
Best suited to: Stable flat paper, frequently viewed documents, maps, cards and photographs with sound non-friable surfaces.
STRENGTHS
- +High clarity, strength and dimensional stability.
- +Supports weak flat material while allowing viewing of both sides.
- +Useful for sleeves and carefully selected encapsulation.
CAUTIONS
- !Static can disturb charcoal, pastel, flakes and loose fragments.
- !Stiff edges and seams may abrade vulnerable objects.
- !Low permeability can retain moisture or deterioration products.
- !Close contact is unsuitable for sticky, powdering or lifting surfaces.
Polyethylene
Best suited to: Photographic prints and negatives where a softer, more flexible transparent sleeve is appropriate.
STRENGTHS
- +Generally softer and less rigid than polyester.
- +Can reduce routine handling and surface contact.
- +Available in sleeves, bags and album pages.
CAUTIONS
- !Very thin film wrinkles and provides little structural support.
- !Generic bags may have uncertain composition or seams.
- !It remains unsuitable for damp, mouldy, sticky or off-gassing objects.
Polypropylene
Best suited to: Card pockets, binder pages, document sleeves and stable photographic materials when supplied to preservation specification.
STRENGTHS
- +Clear, lightweight and widely available in pocket systems.
- +Reduces fingerprints and repeated removal.
- +Can work well for cards and photographs in correctly supported binders.
CAUTIONS
- !Retail products may contain undisclosed additives or poor seams.
- !Overfilled pockets stretch, compress and encourage surface-to-surface contact.
- !Heavy pages can sag and tear around binder rings.
PVC, 'vinyl' and unidentified plastic
Best suited to: Not recommended for long-term preservation housing.
STRENGTHS
- +May have been inexpensive or flexible when new, but convenience is not preservation performance.
CAUTIONS
- !Plasticizers can migrate and create tackiness or odour.
- !Plastic may yellow, harden, cloud, distort or adhere to surfaces.
- !Unknown chemistry makes long-term interaction impossible to judge.
- !Printed or adhesive areas can transfer directly onto the collectible.
Diagnostic clues: when the enclosure becomes part of the condition
Inspect the housing before judging the object through it. Tightness, odour, stains, distortion, seams, labels and access difficulty often explain damage that otherwise appears mysterious.
The object catches or bows during removal
EVIDENCE
Buckled corners, seam lines, edge drag, flexing or force needed to withdraw the item.
MEANING
The housing is too tight, too rigid or badly oriented for the object.
COLLECTOR RISK
Repeated removal creates cumulative abrasion, creasing, corner compression and tears.
RESPONSE
Stop using the sleeve as normal access. Support the object, document the fit and rehouse into a slightly larger or fully opening enclosure.
Plastic is tacky, oily, cloudy or strongly odorous
EVIDENCE
Surface transfer, waviness, yellowing, adhesion, plastic smell or residue inside the pocket.
MEANING
The plastic or its additives may be deteriorating and interacting with the contents.
COLLECTOR RISK
Image transfer, staining, plasticizer migration, blocked surfaces and difficult separation.
RESPONSE
Isolate the enclosure from vulnerable material. Do not peel stuck surfaces; retain labels and seek process-specific advice where adhesion has occurred.
Board or paper is browned around contact areas
EVIDENCE
Local yellowing, embrittlement, acidic odour or staining corresponding to a mount, folder or backing.
MEANING
The housing may be contributing acidity or degradation products.
COLLECTOR RISK
Progressive discolouration and weakening, especially where the object remains tightly compressed against the board.
RESPONSE
Record labels and historical features. Isolate or replace removable harmful contact materials, but do not detach historically integral mounts casually.
The enclosure conceals the reverse or prevents inspection
EVIDENCE
Inscriptions, stamps, repairs, mould, adhesive and trimming cannot be checked without dismantling.
MEANING
The housing may be protective, but it also restricts condition and authenticity assessment.
COLLECTOR RISK
Undetected deterioration and loss of evidence during later sale, grading, insurance or conservation decisions.
RESPONSE
Document all accessible evidence. For valuable or fragile mounted objects, plan specialist opening rather than exploratory dismantling.
The album no longer closes naturally
EVIDENCE
Fore-edge swelling, broken sewing, split joints, detached boards, crushed contents or pressure transfer.
MEANING
Added material or interleaving exceeds the binding's designed capacity.
COLLECTOR RISK
Structural failure of the album and compression of the objects it was meant to protect.
RESPONSE
Do not add more pages or tissue. Support the album, reduce handling and assess whether selective rehousing or a fitted box is safer.
Moisture, mould or vinegar odour is present
EVIDENCE
Condensation, damp feel, mould growth, blocking, buckling, vinegar smell or channelled acetate film.
MEANING
The enclosure may be trapping water or volatile decomposition products.
COLLECTOR RISK
Accelerated mould, gelatin adhesion, dye migration, corrosion and film-base decay.
RESPONSE
Do not seal the object into new plastic. Stabilise the environment, isolate safely and escalate active mould or deteriorating film.
Condition axes for collector judgement
An enclosure can be chemically acceptable and mechanically poor, or physically supportive and evidentially destructive. These axes keep those judgements separate.
Fit and movement
LOW CONCERN
Object rests freely with safe clearance and does not slide excessively.
REVIEW
Minor movement or slight resistance; monitor seams, corners and retrieval method.
HIGH CONCERN
Compression, bowing, rattling, edge drag, pressure points or forced insertion.
Chemical confidence
LOW CONCERN
Exact material known; suitable preservation specification; PAT evidence where relevant.
REVIEW
Material probably acceptable but product history, additives or adhesive details are incomplete.
HIGH CONCERN
PVC, unidentified plastic, strong odour, tackiness, yellowing, acidic board or migrating adhesive.
Surface compatibility
LOW CONCERN
Stable, dry, clean surface with no loose media, sticking or active deterioration.
REVIEW
Slight cockling, glossy contact sensitivity or minor attached elements requiring more clearance.
HIGH CONCERN
Friable media, lifting emulsion, sticky coating, mould, dampness, pressure-sensitive residue or off-gassing film.
Evidence value of the housing
LOW CONCERN
Modern generic enclosure with no labels, sequence or meaningful relationship.
REVIEW
Old housing has useful identifiers or storage history that can be documented separately.
HIGH CONCERN
Original mount, album, case, caption system or sequence is integral to provenance and interpretation.
Access safety
LOW CONCERN
Object can be viewed or removed with full support and minimal contact.
REVIEW
Removal is possible but requires a board, two-handed support or controlled working space.
HIGH CONCERN
Object is stuck, sealed, brittle, trapped behind glazing or requires peeling, flexing or dismantling.
Mounts, mats and attachment decisions
Window mats and mounts should support without becoming permanent attachments
A conservation mount can give a work on paper a handling border, keep it away from glazing and allow repeated display without touching the sheet. The backing and window board should be stable, sufficiently rigid and appropriate to the object. The opening must not rub raised media, cover evidence at the edges or press distorted areas flat.
Photographs and paper should normally be separated from glazing. Damp contact can lead to sticking, image transfer, gloss change and abrasion. If a photograph is already attached to glass, pulling it away can split or strip the image layer and should be treated as a specialist problem.
Minimal attachment is safer than full adhesion
Photo corners, edge strips and carefully designed tabs can hold stable flat objects without adhesive touching them. Traditional Japanese-paper hinges with starch paste may provide flexible, localised attachment, but hinging is a conservation skill: poor paste, excess moisture or strong hinges can stain, cockle, tear or skin the object during removal.
Fully adhering a collectible to a modern backing generally creates long-term difficulty. Differential expansion can cockle the sheet, adhesive can stain, the backing can become acidic, and reverse-side inscriptions or evidence disappear. Full adhesion may be original to an object and therefore historically significant, but it should not be introduced casually as a storage convenience.
Historic mounts can be chemically poor and historically indispensable
Cabinet cards, cartes de visite, albumen prints, stereographs, presentation photographs and prints on old boards often carry studio imprints, addresses, dates, tax stamps, exhibition labels, signatures and ownership marks. Removing the support may destroy provenance or physically damage the object.
The preservation response may be to keep the original mount, isolate the whole mounted object within a better folder or box, add external support and monitor active deterioration. Chemical imperfection does not automatically make an original component disposable.
Albums are objects, structures and evidence systems
An album may be an enclosure, a binding, a display design, a chronology and a provenance record simultaneously. Its preservation cannot be reduced to whether its pages are acidic.
SEQUENCE
Albums preserve relationships
Page order, captions, spacing, gaps and visual grouping can form the only surviving account of chronology, identity and ownership.
STRUCTURE
The binding has a capacity
A blank book filled with thick photographs can become wedge-shaped, breaking sewing and crushing contents. Guards, stubs or spacers must accommodate added thickness.
COMPOSITE OBJECT
Different materials age together
Historic albums may combine paper, photographs, adhesives, leather, textiles, inks, clippings, metals and plastics. One universal treatment rarely suits every component.
SELF-ADHESIVE
'Magnetic' albums are attachment systems
Pressure-sensitive adhesive and plastic overlays can stain, penetrate, stick and embrittle. Photographs should not be forcibly peeled from these pages.
INTERLEAVING
More tissue is not always safer
Selective interleaving can reduce contact, offsetting and abrasion, but excess sheets increase album thickness and strain the binding.
USE
Digitisation can reduce handling
Page images preserve access, sequence and inscriptions while allowing a fragile album to remain closed and supported for most research.
PRESERVATION / RESTORATION BOUNDARY
rehousing is not restoration
Rehousing can reduce future damage without changing the object itself. It can support a detached cover, contain fragments, isolate an acidic mount, keep a photograph away from glazing or make a brittle sheet safer to handle.
Once the work involves peeling adhered photographs, removing old hinges, dissolving adhesive, flattening distorted paper, separating blocked image layers, dismantling an album, replacing original mounts or opening a sealed photographic package, the task has crossed from routine enclosure choice into conservation treatment. The fact that the goal is protective does not make the intervention low-risk.
Choosing among common enclosure types
The most useful comparison is not which enclosure is best in general, but which one allows this object to be supported, inspected and used with the least new risk.
Paper folder or four-flap enclosure
Best suited to: Fragile, torn, irregular, friable or light-sensitive material that should not be slid into a sleeve.

- +Reduces static and direct surface contact.
CAUTIONS
- !Must be larger than the item.
- !Do not overfill.
- !Use a box for groups rather than turning one folder into a compressed container.
Clear sleeve
Best suited to: Stable, dry, frequently viewed paper, cards and photographs with sound surfaces.
STRENGTHS
- +Reduces handling and fingerprints.
- +Allows front and reverse viewing.
- +Works well with an external support board where bending is a risk.
CAUTIONS
- !Avoid friable, sticky, damp or off-gassing material.
- !Keep adhesive flaps away from the withdrawal path.
- !Clear plastic provides no meaningful light protection.
Window mat
Best suited to: Flat works needing display, handling support and separation from glazing.
STRENGTHS
- +Creates a safe handling border.
- +Supports storage and display without repeated remounting.
- +Can leave the reverse accessible through a hinged construction.
CAUTIONS
- !Do not cover important edges or inscriptions.
- !Mount-board quality and attachment method are critical.
- !Do not attempt to detach objects already stuck to glazing.
Fitted box or portfolio
Best suited to: Albums, bound objects, mounted works, groups of folders, loose fragments and structurally weak material.
STRENGTHS
- +Excludes light and dust.
- +Buffers short-term environmental change.
- +Contains components and supports transport.
CAUTIONS
- !Too-tight boxes abrade and crush.
- !Too-loose boxes permit movement and impact.
- !Internal supports must not compress contents.
Encapsulation
Best suited to: Selected stable, flat paper objects needing support and visibility on both sides.
STRENGTHS
- +No adhesive touches the object.
- +Retains loose fragments.
- +Protects from routine handling and dirt.
CAUTIONS
- !Not lamination.
- !Unsuitable for mould, damp, friable media, sticky residues, thick objects or deteriorating film.
- !Static and trapped degradation products must be considered.
Ring-binder page system
Best suited to: Stable cards, photographs and documents that benefit from organised viewing and rearrangement.
STRENGTHS
- +Flexible order and easy catalogue access.
- +Can reduce direct handling when pages are preservation grade.
CAUTIONS
- !Pages sag, rings dent and overfilled pockets compress.
- !Heavy binders need two-handed support.
- !Store upright only with proper support and without overfilling.
A rehousing action hierarchy
Rehousing is an intervention. A controlled sequence reduces loss of order, mislabelling, unnecessary handling and the temptation to force objects into a predetermined system.
Stabilise the room before changing the housing
Address active damp, heat, strong light, pests, dirt and rapid fluctuation. New sleeves cannot compensate for a hostile environment.
Identify the object and its vulnerable surface
Distinguish plain paper from coated card, photographic print, film, glass plate, cased image, friable drawing, laminated sheet or composite album.
Document the existing system
Photograph fronts, backs, page order, captions, labels, mounts, packets, sleeve numbers, box markings, detached fragments and neighbouring relationships.
Triage active hazards
Separate dampness, mould, deteriorating plastic, exposed adhesive, corroding metal and severe pressure only where this can be done without forcing the object.
Select the primary enclosure
Choose paper, plastic, mat, four-flap folder or other housing according to surface, chemistry, fit and access - not marketing language alone.
Add structural support
Use suitable backing boards, dividers, folders, spacers or trays so the object does not bend, slump, rattle or bear weight at vulnerable points.
Add an outer enclosure
Place primary housings in a correctly sized opaque box, portfolio or fitted case to control dust, light, movement and handling.
Preserve identity and original order
Label the enclosure before insertion, link identifiers to the catalogue record, and retain or separately document significant original housings.
Inspect the system periodically
Look for sticking, odour, clouding, yellowing, mould, corrosion, pressure marks, failed seams, detached labels, sagging pages and overloaded bindings.
Documentation checklist before changing an enclosure
- ✓Overall photographs of the object in its existing enclosure before anything is moved.
- ✓Front, reverse and all visible edges, including any area obscured by mounts or corners.
- ✓Album page number, sequence, captions, gaps, neighbouring objects and page design.
- ✓Maker, photographer, dealer, owner, exhibition, processing and grading labels.
- ✓Sleeve, box, mount and folder identifiers, including old numbering systems.
- ✓Materials and condition of the enclosure: colour change, odour, tackiness, brittleness, stains, seams and adhesives.
- ✓Detached fragments, loose inserts, original fasteners and their exact relationships.
- ✓Reason for rehousing, date, materials used and any original component retained separately.
- ✓Any object that resisted removal or was left in place pending specialist review.
Myth versus reality
MYTH
Acid-free means permanent.
REALITY
It does not reveal lignin content, additives, adhesive chemistry, strength, photographic compatibility or ageing behaviour.
MYTH
The tighter the sleeve, the better the protection.
REALITY
Tight housing creates abrasion, corner compression, flexing and hazardous removal.
MYTH
Clear plastic protects against light.
REALITY
Most transparent sleeves reduce touch, not visible or ultraviolet light exposure. They still need opaque outer storage.
MYTH
Lamination is a stronger form of encapsulation.
REALITY
Lamination bonds film or adhesive directly to the object. Proper encapsulation seals around an unattached object and remains removable.
MYTH
Old photographs should always be removed from acidic mounts.
REALITY
The mount may be original, evidential or physically inseparable. Isolation and external support may be safer than detachment.
MYTH
A sealed grading case completes preservation.
REALITY
It reduces handling and bending but does not control light, heat, humidity, flooding, internal contamination or holder ageing.
MYTH
Every album page should be interleaved.
REALITY
Interleaving can reduce contact but may swell the binding, increase pressure and break sewing when used indiscriminately.
Specialist thresholds: when to stop
The safest collector decision is sometimes not to complete the rehousing. Resistance, adhesion, active decay and historically significant structures are evidence that the intervention has become specialist work.

Photograph stuck to glass, plastic or album page
Do not pull or peel. Gelatin and other image layers may split, transfer or remain bonded to the adjacent surface.

Active mould or damp enclosure
Do not brush mould inside a sleeve or seal the object into fresh plastic. Isolate, stabilise the environment and seek appropriate remediation advice.

Vinegar odour, shrinking or channelled film
Deteriorating acetate film can release acidic vapours. Low-permeability plastic may retain them; process-specific film guidance is required.
