Ceramics, Porcelain and Pottery
Ceramics invite a dangerous kind of confidence. They feel hard, fired and permanent, and many pieces survive for centuries in a way that paper, leather, textile and early plastics do not. Yet collectible ceramics often fail at the exact places that make them valuable: the rim, the handle, the painted surface, the gilded edge, the maker's mark, the lid, the old repair and the original glaze surface.
The preservation question is therefore not simply whether the object is broken. It is whether the ceramic body, glaze, decoration, absorbed contamination, firing history, old repair and present display method are working together as a stable object or pulling apart as separate layers under stress.
This chapter uses a body-glaze-repair reading. That structure matters because a porcelain figure, tin-glazed plate, studio pot, earthenware jug, terracotta fragment and bone china cup may all be called ceramic, while their preservation risks differ sharply. The collector's task is to stop treating ceramics as washable household objects and begin reading them as brittle, layered evidence systems.

The porcelain figure that survived the shelf but not the cleaning
A small porcelain figure is described as dusty but intact. It is washed carefully because the ceramic body seems waterproof. Afterwards, an old repair line turns white, a restored finger loosens and a gilded edge looks thinner. The object was not harmed because porcelain is weak; it was harmed because the surface history was more complicated than the material label.
Ceramic preservation often begins by asking what is not ceramic: enamel, gilding, transfer print, cold paint, old adhesive, filler, overpaint, restoration varnish, labels, dirt in crazing and soluble salts in the body.
The false promise of hardness
Ceramic bodies are often hard, but hardness is not the same as resilience. A ceramic object rarely absorbs a blow by bending. It chips, cracks, shatters, loses a projection or opens an old repair. Most serious ceramic losses in domestic collections come from physical force: a dropped cup, a crowded shelf, a lid that slips, a plate stand that tips forward, a handle used as a handle long after it became a repair line.
This makes ceramics a prevention-first category. The best preservation work often looks undramatic: more space in a cabinet, better support under a plate, interleaving between stacked saucers, two-handed handling, no washing after inspection reveals crazing or restoration, and better photographs before anything changes.
Ceramic is a family, not a care instruction
Porcelain, bone china, stoneware, earthenware, terracotta, faience, delftware, majolica and studio pottery do not share one preservation rule. Dense high-fired porcelain may resist water better than low-fired earthenware, but porcelain handles, gilded rims, overglaze enamel and old restoration may be the weakest features on the object. A glazed earthenware dish may appear sealed while crazing, chips or worn glaze allow the body underneath to absorb moisture and staining.
The collector should ask what the object is made of, but also how it was made, used, repaired and displayed. Was it high-fired or low-fired? Glazed or unglazed? Decorated under the glaze, over the glaze or after firing? Used for tea, flowers, plants, burial, food, tobacco, display or restoration? Each history changes the preservation question.
Cleanliness can erase evidence
Dirt is not always merely dirt. Material in crazing, foot rims, unglazed bases, old joins, labels, staple holes, kiln scars and residues may reveal use, repair, age, ownership, burial history or previous treatment. Cleaning before documentation can remove evidence and make later condition interpretation weaker.
That does not mean ceramics should be neglected. Dust can become embedded, especially on matte, porous, unglazed, textured or restored surfaces. The point is sequence: document first, understand the layers second, remove only what is safe to remove third, and treat stain reduction, adhesive reversal, filling or overpaint work as restoration decisions rather than routine housekeeping.

Read body, glaze, decoration and repair as one system
The safe reading sequence is not decorative first. Start with the body, then the glaze, then the decoration, then old repairs and finally the history of use. A crack, stain or chip means something different depending on which layer it crosses and whether it is stable or changing.
Body
Dense, porous, cracked or salt-contaminated
The body decides how water, salts, stains and impact behave. Porcelain may be dense; earthenware and terracotta can be absorbent; archaeological pottery may carry burial salts or fragile residues.
Glaze
Intact skin, crazed network or lifting layer
Glaze protects the body but may craze, chip, flake, stain or disguise a body crack. Crazing is a pathway, not simply a decorative age effect.
Decoration
Underglaze, overglaze, gilded, transfer or cold-painted
Decoration may be tougher than expected or extremely fragile. Gilding and overglaze enamel often suffer from touch, wiping, polishing, stacking and poor supports.
Repair
Structural join, cosmetic fill or concealed restoration
Animal glue, shellac, cellulose nitrate, epoxy, plaster fills, staples, pins and overpaint age differently from ceramic. A restored object should be handled as weaker than it looks.
Use history
Tableware, vase, planter, burial object or art object
Tea, coffee, plant water, soil, food acids, smoke, old cleaning products and display hardware all leave different preservation problems.
Evidence
Marks, labels, residues and component relationships
Factory marks, artist signatures, labels, collection numbers, old repair labels, lids, saucers, stands and pairs can carry as much value as the visible front of the object.
Diagnostic signals
Ceramic condition is rarely interpreted from one clue. A collector should read signal, meaning and risk together, then decide whether the correct action is documentation, safer storage, monitoring, cleaning restraint or specialist assessment.

Fine brown, grey or yellow lines across a glazed surface
Possible meaning
The lines may be crazing, body hairlines, stained glaze cracks or old damage carrying absorbed liquid, dirt or cleaning residues.
Collector risk
Soaking or stain treatment may drive contamination further below the glaze or into the body.
Better question
Is the line only in the glaze, or does it continue through rim, body, foot, handle or repair zone?
Signal
A chip exposing a pale, powdery, red, buff or porous body
Possible meaning
The protective glaze has been breached and the ceramic body may now absorb moisture, oils, dirt or treatment materials.
Collector risk
Casual filling, sanding or colour touch-in can obscure condition and complicate future conservation.
Better question
Is this an inert old chip, an active powdering edge, a display risk or a valuation-significant loss?
Signal
Decoration sits proud, looks matte, catches a tool or breaks at edges
Possible meaning
It may be overglaze enamel, gilding, lustre, cold paint, transfer, restoration overpaint or a vulnerable applied surface.
Collector risk
A cloth, brush, detergent or solvent may remove the decoration faster than it removes dirt.
Better question
Is the decoration protected by glaze, fused to the glaze, sitting on top of it, or added later?
Signal
A neat line, different gloss, colour shift or fluorescence under UV
Possible meaning
The area may be filled, overpainted, coated, reattached or restored. UV can help, but it is evidence rather than a verdict.
Collector risk
A visually convincing repair may still be structurally weak, water-sensitive or valuation-significant.
Better question
What part of the object depends on this repair, and is the repair documented?
Signal
Recurring white bloom, gritty crystals or powder after wiping
Possible meaning
Soluble salts, degraded restoration materials or moisture movement may be bringing material to the surface.
Collector risk
Repeated brushing, sealing or varnishing may hide the symptom while trapping the process inside.
Better question
Is the deposit a one-off surface dirt problem or evidence of active movement through a porous ceramic body?
Signal
A handle, spout, finial, foot or applied flower feels slightly mobile
Possible meaning
The projection may have an old crack, failing adhesive, internal pin, previous restoration or stress concentration.
Collector risk
Testing the movement can turn a warning sign into a break.
Better question
Can the object be supported without relying on the projection, and should it be isolated until assessed?
Preservation boundary
The point where care becomes treatment
Dusting a stable, robust surface is care. Removing staining from crazing, reducing salts, reversing old adhesive, filling a chip, repainting a loss, removing staples or trying to make an old repair invisible is treatment. Treatment changes the material record and should be approached as conservation or restoration, not housekeeping.
For collectors, the ethical distinction is practical: routine care should reduce risk without altering evidence. Restoration may be justified, but it should be intentional, documented and proportionate to value, rarity, use and future disclosure.
What collectors should understand before cleaning
Crazing is a pathway
Crazing is a network of cracks in the glaze caused by stress or mismatch between glaze and body. It can be stable, but it can also admit staining, water, salts and cleaning residues beneath the glaze.
Hairlines are not the same as crazing
A hairline crack travels through the ceramic body. It may be structurally important, especially if it crosses a rim, handle join, neck, foot, base or other load-bearing zone.
Water is not neutral
Water can enter crazing, soften old glue, swell porous bodies, move salts, create tide marks, darken terracotta, lift unstable paint or reveal hidden restoration.
Light is usually secondary, but decoration matters
The fired body is usually less light-sensitive than paper or textiles, but overglaze enamel, cold paint, labels, mounts and restoration materials can age or fade in strong light and heat.
Average temperature matters less than shock
Most ceramics tolerate normal room temperatures, but sudden changes can crack thin, damaged or composite objects. Avoid hot water, radiators, direct sun, fireplaces and loft swings.
Humidity matters when the object is not simple
Ceramics are often tolerant of ordinary indoor humidity, but salts, porous bodies, labels, metal staples, old repairs, excavated surfaces and mould-prone dirt make RH change relevant.
Intervention ladder
Work up the ladder only as far as the object allows. Many valuable ceramics never need to move beyond documentation, safer support and controlled dusting.

Observe before acting
Work over a padded surface in good light. Record cracks, chips, crazing, gilding wear, labels, foot rims, maker's marks, repair lines, lid fit and any movement before cleaning or display changes.

Reduce physical risk first
Move crowded pieces apart, lower heavy objects, remove tension from stands, separate lids for handling, interleave stacked plates and stop using handles, spouts or finials as lifting points.

Dry dust only where safe
Use a soft artist's brush and full support. Avoid snagging raised decoration, fragile flowers, rough chips, flaking glaze, powdery terracotta, old fills and gilding. Dry cleaning can still abrade.

Consider minimal damp cleaning only on robust surfaces
A small damp swab on sound, fully glazed, undecorated, uncrazed and unrestored ceramic is very different from immersion. Stop if colour transfers, a join changes, a surface darkens or a crack takes up moisture.

Treat stains, salts, glue, fills and overpaint as treatment questions
Bleaching, peroxide, adhesive reversal, filling chips, retouching colour, removing staples, reducing salts or lifting overpaint can change originality, value and future treatment options.

Display and storage judgement
Ceramic storage is a physical-risk problem first. A perfect humidity target will not save a plate that falls from a weak hanger or a tureen whose lid is carried in place across a room.
Best
Stable cabinet or well-planned open display
Objects separated, shelves secure, weight low, supports inert, no direct sun, low vibration, limited dust, lids protected and no object touching glass doors or neighbours.
Good
Boxed storage with proper interleaving
Acid-free tissue or inert foam next to the object, cushioning outside, heavy pieces low, fragments bagged and labelled, and no pressure on handles, spouts, flowers or restored joins.
Risky
Normal domestic convenience storage
Open shelves in busy rooms, stacked plates without interleaving, crowded cabinets, newspaper wrapping, direct bubble wrap, cheap spring hangers, lofts, garages and damp cupboards.
Dangerous
Forces and treatments that create sudden loss
Dishwashers, soaking stained crazed ware, adhesive wall mounts, storage near radiators, hanging cups by handles, moving house without proper packing, and storing restored objects under load.
Display risks collectors often underestimate
Cabinets are preservation tools
A cabinet reduces dust, casual handling, pets, children, knocks and environmental fluctuation. The cabinet must still have secure shelves, enough space, and supports that do not concentrate pressure on rims or gilding.
Plate stands and hangers are not neutral
Metal hooks, spring tension, unstable stands, adhesive hangers and hard pressure points can chip rims, scratch glaze or stress a plate. Valuable plates should not rely on cheap spring hangers.
Stacking is a compromise
Stack similar sizes only, keep stacks low, interleave with acid-free tissue or inert foam, and never stack fragile, restored or high-value items. What fits in a cupboard is not automatically safely stored.
Bubble wrap belongs outside the contact layer
Bubble wrap is useful cushioning for transport but poor long-term direct wrapping. It can trap moisture, press into soft restoration, snag raised decoration and stress delicate projections.
Special ceramic situations
Vases
Do not assume an old vase is watertight. Crazing, earthenware bodies, old repairs and hidden cracks can allow seepage, staining, salts, damp bases and mould. If flowers are necessary, use a removable liner cautiously and check for condensation or pressure.
Functional tableware
Use creates preservation conflict: cutlery scratches, food acids, tea staining, handle stress, thermal shock, dishwasher damage and gilding loss. Rare, restored, crazed, sentimental or high-value pieces are safer as display or occasional controlled-use objects.
Archaeological ceramics
Burial deposits, salts, old consolidants, pigments and residues may have research value. Archaeological pottery should not automatically be made clean; stability, documentation and evidence may matter more than cosmetic brightness.
Sets, pairs and lidded objects
Completeness affects value. Photograph pairs together and separately, record lids and saucers as components, protect rubbing points, identify married or replacement pieces, and do not swap labels between parts.
Myth versus reality
Myth
Porcelain is basically glass, so washing it is safe.
Reality
The body may be dense, but gilding, enamel, old repair, restored losses, labels, thin handles and hairlines can make washing unsafe.
Myth
A clear ring proves a ceramic is sound.
Reality
Ringing is crude, can worsen damage, and is unreliable for thick, complex or restored objects. Good light and careful visual inspection are safer.
Myth
Crazing is only cosmetic age character.
Reality
Crazing may be stable, but it is also a route for staining, salts, cleaning residues and moisture below the glaze.
Myth
Invisible restoration restores value because the object looks perfect.
Reality
Undisclosed or excessive restoration can reduce trust, obscure true condition, complicate authentication and affect valuation.
Warning signs that need attention
The key phrase is change over time. A stable old chip is a condition note. A spreading crack, recurring salt bloom or moving handle is a preservation issue.
Change in a crack
New crack, darkening line, increasing length, moisture weeping, movement, sound change or a crack crossing a handle, neck, foot, rim or old repair.
Active surface behaviour
Flaking glaze, powdering body, recurring bloom, gritty deposits, damp-looking patches, mould smell, condensation, or repeated staining after wiping.
Repair instability
Yellowing joins, whitening adhesive, sticky seams, shrinking fills, lifting overpaint, corroding staples, loose handles, misaligned lids or restored parts under load.
Display or storage damage
New chips after storage, stand marks, fading gilding where touched, objects creeping from vibration, crowded shelves, touching pieces or unstable wall hangers.
When to pause for specialist assessment
Stop when decoration transfers
Colour, gilding or powder on a cloth, brush or swab may be original decoration or restoration surface. Do not continue to find out by loss.
Pause for stains below the glaze
Brown crazing lines, deep tea staining, tide marks, mould residues and iron or soil staining may be embedded in the body rather than sitting on the surface.
Use a conservator for valuable breaks
If a significant ceramic breaks, collect every fragment, avoid touching broken edges, do not wash pieces, bag small fragments separately, photograph the break and seek advice before glue is introduced.
Seek advice for salts or flaking glaze
Recurring bloom, crystallisation, powdering, glaze lifting or salt-related damage can worsen if sealed, washed or brushed repeatedly.
What not to do
Do not soak stained or crazed ceramics
A cleaner appearance can hide deeper water movement, softened repairs, new tide marks, salt mobilisation or staining driven farther into the body.
Do not polish gilding
Gilding loss is often permanent. Re-gilding may improve appearance but changes originality and should be recorded as restoration.
Do not lift by handles, spouts, rims or finials
These are common weak points and common repair zones. Support the base and body with two hands; remove lids separately before moving.
Do not glue immediately after a break
Wrong adhesive, poor alignment, excess glue, staining and irreversibility can reduce value and make professional repair harder.
Do not remove marks or labels casually
Factory marks, artist signatures, retailer labels, exhibition labels, auction stickers and family notes may be central to identity, provenance and value.
Do not hide condition in records
Condition honesty is part of preservation. A concealed crack or restoration can damage valuation, insurance, trust and future conservation choices.

Insurance and valuation implications
Value loss is often condition-specific
Visible cracks, restored handles, missing lids, stained crazing, overpaint, large chips, drilled holes, replacement parts and excessive restoration can affect value sharply.
Concealed restoration is a trust problem
A visually perfect ceramic with undisclosed repair may be less trustworthy than a visibly damaged but honestly recorded object. Documentation protects both owner and future buyer.
Sets need piece-level records
A dinner service, pair of vases or lidded tureen should not be recorded only as a single attractive group. Loss, replacement and mismatch sit at component level.
Collector philosophy
Do not make every ceramic look new
The aim is not to erase every mark, brighten every stain or make every repair invisible. The aim is to keep the object stable, legible, honest and safely transferable to the next owner or generation.
Stable
Reduce opportunities for impact, vibration, water entry, salt movement, repair failure and decoration loss before treatment is needed.
Legible
Keep marks, labels, use evidence, repairs, residues and condition patterns readable. Cosmetic brightness is not always preservation.
Honest
Record restoration, damage and uncertainty. Serious collectors value disclosed condition more than unexplained perfection.
Transferable
Preserve both object and knowledge so the next owner, family member, insurer, conservator or buyer understands what is original, vulnerable and changed.
