Pollutants and Air Quality

Air quality is one of the easiest preservation risks for collectors to underestimate because the most damaging agents are often invisible. A room can look clean while acidic packaging, fresh paint, smoke residues, display plastics, wood products, foam inserts, adhesives, rubber components or urban pollution are quietly changing the chemistry around an object.

Pollutants should not be treated as a housekeeping side issue. They are part of the object environment. They include gases, particles, vapours, soot, odours, residues and chemicals released by the very boxes, sleeves, boards, cabinets, frames and supports that collectors often introduce in the name of protection.

The collector's question is therefore not simply whether a collection is dusty. It is what is in the air, what is being trapped around the object, what materials are producing vapours, and which objects are sensitive enough that a small contaminant becomes a serious preservation risk.

The clean cabinet with the wrong smell

Imagine a collector who moves medals, paper certificates, a plastic display figure and a small leather case into a new cabinet. The cabinet looks ideal: dust-free, secure and visually tidy. After a few months the silver has tarnished faster than expected, the leather case smells sharper, the paper certificate has developed edge discolouration and the plastic figure has faint tackiness where it touches a foam support.

A rushed reading blames each object separately. The more useful preservation reading asks what the cabinet, lining, adhesive, foam, wood product or enclosed air is doing to all of them. The problem may not be dirt on the objects. It may be a shared air-quality problem created by the materials around them.

Understanding the air around the object

Pollution is both particulate and chemical

Particulate pollutants are physical deposits: dust, soot, fibres, pollen, ash, skin flakes, building dust, textile lint, pest debris and fine urban particles. They soil surfaces, abrade delicate finishes when moved, lodge in paper fibres or textile weave, attract moisture and can provide harbourage or nutrients for pests and mould.

Gaseous pollutants are often less visible and more chemically aggressive. Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, acetic acid, formic acid, formaldehyde, hydrogen sulphide, chlorine-containing compounds and volatile organic compounds from paints, sealants, plastics, varnishes and adhesives can penetrate enclosures and react with object materials.

The source is often indoors

Collectors understandably think of pollution as traffic, industry, smoke, construction dust or urban air. Those sources matter, especially near busy roads, garages, fireplaces, kitchens or workshops. But many serious private-collection risks are generated indoors by storage and display choices.

MDF, chipboard, plywood, fresh paint, poor cardboard, foam inserts, rubber bands, PVC sleeves, varnished furniture, carpets, sealants, scented products, aerosol cleaners and old adhesive labels can all create local pollutant sources. A collection can therefore deteriorate in a clean-looking room because the wrong box, cabinet, sleeve or display case is making a more aggressive microenvironment than the room itself.

Air quality is local before it is room-wide

The air an object experiences is not always the air you experience when you walk into the room. It may be the air inside a sleeve, frame, drawer, box, original package, foam-lined case, coin capsule or sealed display. That local air may contain concentrated acids, plasticisers, solvents, sulphur compounds, moisture or odours that are not obvious in the room.

This is why pollutant assessment should begin at object scale. What touches the item? What surrounds it? What does the enclosure smell like when opened? Are neighbouring objects changing too? Has anything new been introduced? The local evidence often tells a clearer story than the general impression that the room is tidy.

Pollutant damage is easier to investigate when it is treated as a chain rather than a vague background risk. The collector's task is to find where the chain can be broken before visible damage is cleaned, polished or normalised.

Air-quality problems often appear as ordinary condition flaws. The diagnostic task is to read the flaw alongside its enclosure, neighbours and recent storage history before deciding whether cleaning, rehousing, documentation or specialist advice is the correct next move.

Rapid tarnish in one cabinet

Evidence: Silver, plated fittings, coins or badges darken faster in one display area than comparable items elsewhere.

Meaning: The issue may be sulphur, organic acids, wood products, rubber, foam, acidic board, poor lining or trapped cabinet air rather than the metal alone.

Setting: A signed poster is behind glass in a wooden frame with low-grade backing board and pressure-sensitive tape.

Likely reading: The frame protects the poster from dust and handling, so the display is probably safe.

Better reading: The frame may be a sealed pollutant chamber if the mount board, backing, adhesive or wood emits acids or traps moisture against the paper and ink.

First move: Document the frame package, inspect backing and contact points, and treat reframing as preservation work rather than decoration.

The original box that is part of the value

Setting: A vintage toy remains in original packaging with foam, rubber bands, printed inserts and a plastic window.

Likely reading: Untouched packaging is always best, so nothing should be disturbed.

Better reading: Original packaging may be historically valuable and chemically risky. Foam, rubber and plastics can stain, crumble, off-gas or stick to the object.

First move: Photograph the original arrangement before any change, then consider inert barriers or separated storage for unstable components.

The garage archive in sealed plastic tubs

Setting: Books, electronics, cards and photographs are stored in lidded tubs in a garage beside tools, paints and vehicle fumes.

Likely reading: The tubs keep out dust, so the collection is protected.

Better reading: The tubs may trap moisture and volatile compounds while the garage supplies fuel vapours, dust, temperature swings, pests and corrosion risk.

First move: Move the most vulnerable items to an internal stable room, inspect for odour and residue, and replace risky enclosures gradually.

Off-gassing from storage and display materials

Preservation and restoration boundary

Cleaning the room, replacing a risky sleeve or moving a collection away from smoke is preventive preservation. Polishing a medal, removing soot from paper, washing a textile, separating stuck photographs, treating corrosion, deodorising leather or cleaning a painted surface is intervention on the object itself. That boundary matters because the wrong treatment can remove original material, market evidence, authentication evidence or insurance evidence.

When in doubt, stabilise the environment, isolate the risk if safe, photograph the evidence and delay object treatment until the material and value implications are understood.

Practical control hierarchy

1. Remove or reduce the source

Source removal is usually stronger than trying to clean damage after it appears.

  • Remove smoke, candles, incense, air fresheners and sprays from collection rooms.
  • Replace PVC sleeves, rubber bands, degrading foam, acidic boards and poor cardboard where safe to do so.
  • Keep solvents, paints, glues, fuels and workshop materials away from storage areas.

2. Improve storage materials

  • Separate incompatible materials such as rubber with plastic figures, coins with PVC flips, photos with newspaper, and textiles with cardboard.
  • Treat display cases and frames as microclimates, not just containers.

3. Improve the room

Room-level control reduces the load placed on every enclosure.

  • Prefer internal rooms away from kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, garages, external walls and direct sunlight.
  • Control dust through careful housekeeping rather than object cleaning.
  • Avoid damp and rapid temperature or humidity swings, which amplify pollutant reactions.
  • Keep collections off floors and away from vents, windows and renovation work.

4. Filter and ventilate selectively

Filtration and ventilation can help, but they are not substitutes for safe materials and source control.

  • Use HEPA filtration for particulates where dust, pollen or smoke particles are a concern.
  • Use activated carbon or sorbents only as part of a maintained system; exhausted carbon is not magic protection.
  • Avoid ozone-generating devices around collections.
  • Ventilate newly painted or cleaned rooms before returning objects, but avoid bringing in damp, dusty or polluted outdoor air.

5. Monitor and document

Pollution damage is often gradual, so records create the evidence trail needed for preservation, insurance and future explanation.

  • Track odours, dust return, rapid tarnish, corrosion, yellowing, haze, sticky plastics and mould or pest signs.
  • Photograph object surfaces, contact points, enclosures and packaging before rehousing or cleaning.
  • Use temperature and RH logging because moisture and heat amplify pollutant damage.
  • Escalate to specialist assessment where value, fragility, contamination or active deterioration makes casual treatment risky.

Location and storage judgement

A private collection rarely has museum-grade air handling. The practical decision is usually whether the object is in the best available domestic location, whether the enclosure is helping or harming, and whether the most vulnerable objects are being protected from the highest-risk rooms.

Pollution risk by common storage location

Internal, stable room

Usually the best domestic starting point if away from fireplaces, kitchens, damp, solvents and direct sun.

Living room display

Often acceptable for robust items, but watch candles, incense, fireplaces, sunlight, pets, dust and frequent handling.

Kitchen-adjacent room

Cooking aerosols and grease can create sticky films and attract dust, especially on open display and textured objects.

  1. Keep original packaging where it has value, but do not assume direct contact is safe.

Intermediate monitoring

Use temperature/RH loggers, dust inspection cards, pollutant indicator strips where suitable, photo-storage compatibility information and comparison between storage areas.
