Foxing, staining and discolouration are among the most useful deterioration warning signs because they sit at the intersection of material chemistry, storage history, handling, environment and previous ownership. They are not one problem. They are visible symptoms that something has happened, or is still happening, inside or around the object.
The collector's first mistake is often to treat colour change as cosmetic. A brown spot, tide mark, yellow halo, bleached patch or darkened edge may record moisture, mould, acidity, metal corrosion, adhesive migration, light exposure, smoke, plasticiser movement, dye bleed or an old cleaning attempt. Some marks are stable historical evidence. Others are active warnings that deterioration is continuing.

Reading colour change as evidence

What foxing may be telling you
Foxing is not always caused by one factor. It may involve moisture, impurities, microbiological history, paper chemistry and storage materials acting together. The safest collector response is diagnostic restraint.
Moisture history
Foxing is strongly associated with damp or fluctuating conditions. High humidity encourages mould activity, paper chemistry changes and movement of soluble material through paper.
Evidence: Spots clustered near edges, endpapers, tissue guards, folds, boards, enclosed areas or objects known to have been stored in lofts, basements, garages or damp rooms.
Collector risk: Assuming the item is safe because it feels dry now. Foxing may record a past damp period, but it may also indicate a storage pattern that still needs correction.
Metallic impurities
Tiny metal particles or impurities from manufacturing, water, pigments, inks or contamination can oxidise and create rust-coloured speckling.

Mould or microbiological history
Foxing may be associated with mould or fungal activity, particularly after damp storage, although old foxing does not automatically mean active mould.

Bleaching and pale patches

Uneven colour shift
Uneven discolouration can reveal how an object was stored, displayed, folded, framed, mounted, handled or exposed.

Why stains often cannot be cleaned off
