Ivory-Sensitive Organic Materials
Ivory is not just a decorative white material. In preservation terms it is a dense, moisture-responsive biological tissue, usually dentine from teeth or tusks, with a mineral and organic structure that continues to respond to its surroundings. It can look hard and permanent while quietly cracking, yellowing, drying, absorbing handling dirt, reacting to light or failing at old joins.
For collectors, ivory-sensitive material is also a decision category. It may appear as a carved figure, netsuke, portrait miniature support, scientific instrument fitting, piano key veneer, knife handle, fan guard, furniture inlay, gaming counter, jewellery mount, religious object, ethnographic object, trophy, natural history specimen or small decorative insert. The ivory-like component may be physically small, but it can control the object's care, description, legality, saleability, insurance record and ethical handling.
This page is therefore not a recipe for making ivory look white again. It is a chapter on preserving evidence. The collector's job is to keep the object stable, keep the surface truthful, record uncertainty honestly, avoid home tests and cosmetic treatment, and know when identification, conservation or legal advice has become part of preservation rather than an optional extra.
Understanding ivory as a preservation material
What ivory is, and why it behaves differently from stone or plastic
Ivory is primarily dentine: a mineralised biological tissue with microscopic structure, an organic component and a moisture history. It is harder and denser than many other organic materials, but it is not inert. It expands and contracts with humidity, changes colour with light and age, stains through handling and old residues, and can split when environmental change outruns the material's ability to adjust.
Collectors often meet ivory through appearance rather than anatomy. Cream colour, smooth polish and carved detail can encourage the mistaken idea that it should be treated like marble, ceramic or modern resin. That mistake is behind many damaged surfaces: bleaching, sanding, oiling, polishing, water washing and hot-needle testing all come from treating a sensitive biological material as though it were a neutral hard substance.
Ivory-sensitive is wider than elephant ivory
In collecting language, 'ivory' may refer to elephant tusk, other tooth and tusk materials, marine mammal ivory, hippopotamus ivory, fossil ivory, mammoth ivory or an object merely described as ivory-like. It may also be confused with bone, antler, horn, vegetable ivory, celluloid, casein, resin, composition, ivorine, French ivory or modern synthetic substitutes.
For preservation, the safest stance is not to make a confident claim too early. Record the material as confirmed, possible, seller-described or unknown. Keep the evidence visible. Do not upgrade 'ivory-coloured' into 'ivory', or 'ivory' into a species claim, unless the basis is documented. Material identity can affect care, value, authenticity, trade, export, legal restrictions and ethical decisions.
The object is evidence, not just material
Colour, patina, machining marks, carving wear, tool traces, small age cracks, collection labels, accession numbers, old repair materials and staining patterns can all help interpret age, use, origin and alteration. Heavy cleaning may improve a photograph while destroying the evidence that made the object intelligible.
The most important preservation rule is restraint. With ivory-sensitive objects, the collector protects the surface, the structure, the documentation and the uncertainty. Those four things are connected. If one is damaged, the others often become weaker as well.
The collector's diagnostic view
Ivory condition should not be judged by whether it is white or clean. The useful judgement is whether the surface, structure and documentation still tell a trustworthy story. These signals help separate ordinary age from active risk.
Fine radial cracks
What it may mean: Drying, age stress, tusk structure or repeated humidity cycling.
Collector risk: Often tolerable if old and stable, but should be photographed and monitored.
Open splits or widening cracks
What it may mean: Severe shrinkage, impact, active environmental stress or structural movement.
Collector risk: High risk. Support the object and stop handling until the cause is understood.
Yellow, cream, honey or brown patina
What it may mean: Natural ageing, light history, handling, oils, coatings or storage history.
Collector risk: Not automatically dirt. Whitening may remove historical and authentication evidence.
Patchy colour
What it may mean: Uneven light exposure, protected areas under mounts, repairs, staining or mixed replacement parts.
Collector risk: A condition and authenticity signal. Record before attempting any cleaning.
Chalky or abraded surface
What it may mean: Over-cleaning, chemical exposure, desiccation, abrasion or previous restoration.
Collector risk: High preservation concern. Do not polish further.
Greasy dark handling areas

Warped key slips or lifting inlay

Collector risk: Treat as a mixed-material problem, not simply a loose ivory problem.
White filler, glossy glue or bloom around cracks
What it may mean: Cosmetic filling, superglue, epoxy, modern repair or disguised damage.
Collector risk: Document carefully. Later conservation may be harder and value disclosure may matter.
Strong artificial whiteness
What it may mean: Bleaching, sanding, polishing, replacement material or unusually recent surface exposure.
Collector risk: Authentication and preservation warning. A bright surface is not automatically a better surface.
Solvent, polish or chemical odour
What it may mean: Recent treatment, cleaning residue, unstable coating or contaminated storage.
Collector risk: Isolate and ventilate safely; do not add further products.
Evidence, meaning and collector risk
The same visible feature can mean different things depending on age, use, environment and repair history. A collector's record should therefore capture interpretation, not just appearance.
Whiteness is not condition
Evidence: Bright, even, pale ivory may look attractive in a sale photograph.
Meaning: It may also indicate bleaching, sanding, polishing, replacement or loss of age surface.
Collector risk: Collectors who chase whiteness can remove patina, tool marks, wear evidence and legal or authentication clues.
Cracks need a time judgement
Evidence: A crack may be old, darkened, stable and consistent with age, or fresh, sharp, pale and widening.
Meaning: The question is not simply whether a crack exists, but whether it is active, structural or linked to present storage.
Collector risk: Filling or gluing too soon can disguise the warning while locking in stress.
Mixed materials move at different speeds
Evidence: Ivory often sits on wood, beside metal, against textile, within lacquer, under polish or on old glue.
Meaning: Damage may begin in the neighbouring material and only appear as ivory cracking or lifting.
Collector risk: Treating the ivory alone can miss the real cause: dry wood, corroding pins, failing adhesive or case microclimate.
A description is not proof
Evidence: Receipts, family notes and dealer labels may say ivory, bone, faux ivory or ivorine.
Meaning: Those words are evidence of description history, not always evidence of material identity.
Collector risk: Future sale, export or insurance decisions become fragile if inherited wording is treated as confirmed fact.
Environment: stable, moderate and low light
Private collectors rarely need museum-perfect precision. They do need to avoid damaging swings. A slightly imperfect but stable room is usually safer than constant correction with heaters, dehumidifiers or humidifiers that create repeated change.

Practical collector care
Acclimatise before display or treatment
Ivory dislikes sudden change. An object moved from a cold store, damp house, dry loft, tropical climate, auction warehouse or shipping container should not be placed immediately in a warm cabinet or near central heating. Let the object adjust slowly in a stable room, supported and away from direct heat or sunlight.
This is especially important for piano keys, inlays, handles and composite objects. A small ivory component may be trapped against wood or metal that is moving at a different rate. Sudden environmental change can open cracks or lift veneers before the collector realises anything is happening.
Handle for drop risk as much as surface risk
Clean, dry hands may be suitable for some robust objects, while nitrile gloves can reduce oils when grip is secure. Cotton gloves are not automatically safer: on smooth, small or fragile carvings they can increase drop risk. The right handling method is the one that reduces both surface contamination and accidental impact.
Support the whole object. Never lift by tusk tips, thin carved arms, pierced fretwork, loose handles, lifting inlay, key slips or projecting mounts. Work over a padded table, remove rings and watches, and place the object down rather than passing fragile pieces hand-to-hand.
Store to buffer, support and separate
Good storage reduces abrasion, environmental shock and mechanical stress. Use unbuffered conservation tissue, inert foam supports, custom trays, padded boxes, dividers for small objects and labels attached to packaging rather than to the object. Avoid tight wrapping: ivory and its neighbouring materials need protection, not compression.
For inlaid furniture, boxes and instruments, store the whole composite object with the weakest interaction in mind. The ivory may be less vulnerable than the paper lining, silk, hide glue, lacquer or wooden substrate. Protect the most vulnerable material rather than the strongest-looking one.
Clean the surroundings before cleaning the object
Often the safest preservation action is to improve the storage environment, not the ivory surface. Dust the shelf, replace poor packaging, remove acidic paper, reduce handling, stabilise the room and photograph the object before considering any surface cleaning.
Acceptable low-risk cleaning is usually limited to gentle dry dust removal with a soft brush or bulb blower while the object is supported. Anything involving moisture, solvents, oils, abrasives, whitening or pressure belongs beyond routine collector care.
Ivory in mixed-material collectibles
Ivory often fails because something around it fails. The preservation question is not only, "What is the ivory doing?" but "What is the object assembly doing to the ivory?"
Ivory and wood
Boxes, furniture, instruments, piano keys and inlay often fail at the boundary between ivory and wood. Wood movement can lift inlay, warp key slips or crack a rigidly attached veneer. Pressing a lifted piece down may add stress if the substrate is still moving.
Ivory and metal
Handles, scientific instruments, mounts and decorative fittings may include pins, screws or metal collars. Corrosion can stain ivory green, black or brown, and expanding corrosion can crack the material from inside. Corrosion staining is often a structural warning, not just a blemish.
Ivory and textile, leather or paper
Fans, cases, religious objects, ethnographic items and miniatures may combine ivory with silk, thread, leather, velvet, paper or card. These materials may be more light-sensitive, pest-sensitive or mould-prone than the ivory. Display and storage should protect the weakest material in the assembly.
Ivory and paint, gilding or staining
Decoration outranks whiteness. Painted, stained, dyed, gilded or inked ivory should not be cleaned as if it were plain material. Even gentle moisture or rubbing can remove the very surface that carries the object's meaning.
Ivory and adhesives
Old animal glue may fail with age or humidity but can be part of the object's treatment history. Modern PVA, superglue and epoxy may stain, creep, bloom, age badly or become difficult to reverse. Adhesive choice is conservation work, not a household repair decision.
A safe action hierarchy
1. Pause before improving appearance
Ask whether the action would remove evidence: patina, colour history, tool marks, labels, old repairs, residues, grain visibility, joins or component differences.
2. Photograph the whole object and the component
Capture the object in context, close-up surfaces, edges, backs, underside, cracks, lifted areas, repair zones, marks, packaging and paperwork.
3. Stabilise the environment
Move away from heat, direct sun, damp, tight plastic, poor mounts and unstable packaging. Support the object before diagnosis.
4. Separate description from conclusion
Record seller wording, observed clues and specialist conclusions in different fields. Use 'possible ivory - unconfirmed' when that is the honest state of knowledge.
5. Decide whether stakes justify specialist help
If sale, export, insurance, restoration, cultural significance, active deterioration or legal status depends on identification, stop at collector-level care.
Repairs, restoration and disclosure
Stabilisation and market disguise are not the same
Ivory repair can be technically difficult and ethically charged. A conservation repair aims to stabilise material, preserve evidence and make intervention legible. A market-driven repair may aim to hide damage, restore whiteness or make a restricted or questionable object easier to sell. Those are different intentions with different consequences.
Cracks, joins, fills and adhesives often remain visible or become visible later. Superglue can wick into cracks, bloom white and stain. Epoxy can be strong but visually intrusive and difficult to reverse. Fills may age differently from ivory. Metal pins may continue corroding beneath a tidy repair.
Documentation is part of the repair
For high-value, legally sensitive or culturally important ivory, treatment documentation may matter almost as much as the treatment itself. Record the date, person or studio, purpose, materials used, before and after photographs, whether material was added or removed, whether the treatment is reversible, and what uncertainty remains.
A repair without disclosure can weaken trust. A stable old crack honestly recorded may be less damaging to collector confidence than a bright, filled surface with no explanation.
Documentation checklist for ivory or possible ivory objects
Documentation is not administration after the fact. For ivory-sensitive objects, it is part of the preservation system because the future owner, insurer, auctioneer, conservator, executor or institution may need evidence that cannot be reconstructed later.
Object title and type
Separates a piano, fan, carving, scientific instrument, box or natural history specimen from a generic material note.
Material status
Use confirmed ivory, possible ivory, seller-described ivory, bone, horn, antler, synthetic, unknown or mixed as appropriate.

Ivory is a regulated wildlife material. In the UK and many other jurisdictions, private ownership, commercial dealing, advertising for sale, import, export, re-export, hiring, arranging transactions and movement across borders may be treated differently. Species, date, object type, percentage of ivory, cultural status and exemption route can all matter.
A preservation page cannot replace current legal guidance. The collector rule is more practical: own cautiously, describe cautiously, sell only with a verified legal route, export only with specialist advice, and keep the evidence that supports any decision. Avoid vague labels such as 'legal ivory' unless the basis, date and jurisdiction are recorded.
Ethical preservation means preserving without laundering
Ivory can carry craft, musical, scientific, cultural, colonial, religious, personal and natural history significance. It can also carry legal and ethical discomfort. Hiding the material, inventing provenance, euphemising likely ivory as bone, whitening surfaces to imply superior condition, or separating ivory components to simplify sale is not good stewardship.
Transparent records are better than cosmetic neutrality. State what is known, what is believed, what is uncertain, what evidence survives and what actions are restricted or avoided. In this field, honesty is a preservation method.

Myth: Ivory should be white.
Reality: Aged ivory is often cream, yellow, honey or brownish. Patina may be age evidence rather than dirt.
Myth: Sunlight can safely improve ivory by bleaching it.
Reality: Light damage is cumulative and irreversible. It can cause uneven colour, drying and splitting.
Myth: Oil prevents cracking.
Reality: Oil can stain, darken, attract dust, oxidise and complicate future conservation.
Myth: Ivory is waterproof because it came from an animal.

Good

Emergency situations
If ivory gets wet
Do not heat it or put it in direct sun. Blot surrounding moisture gently, support the object, allow slow drying in a stable room and consult a conservator for valuable or composite objects.
If a crack opens
Do not force it closed or inject glue. Photograph it, support the object, reduce handling and review humidity, heat and storage conditions.
If inlay lifts
Do not press it flat, tape it down or add superglue. Store flat and supported. If a piece detaches, bag and label it separately.
If mould appears nearby
Isolate the object. Do not brush mould through the collection. Growth may be on wood, textile, leather, dirt or adhesive rather than ivory itself. Use protective precautions and seek advice if active.
If a fragment breaks off
Keep every fragment. Photograph the break. Do not clean the break edge and do not repeatedly test-fit pieces, as this abrades the join.
