Measurement photography combines several activities that are individually manageable but risky in combination: lifting, positioning, supporting, aligning a scale, operating a camera and repeating views. The collector may become so focused on making a number readable that pressure on a fragile edge, a loose component, a swinging camera strap or an unstable stand goes unnoticed.
The governing principle is simple: a measurement photograph is never worth causing new damage. Measurements should describe the object as it exists. They should not require it to be flattened, straightened, compressed, stretched, opened, suspended or forced into a supposedly more measurable form.

Preserve the object first, then preserve the credibility of the measurement. When exactness and safety conflict, qualify the measurement rather than altering the collectible.
Evidence
A measurement photograph records both size and method
The image should show what was measured, the scale used, the object's orientation and any limits that affected accuracy. A ruler in the frame is not enough if the reader cannot tell which boundary or dimension it represents.
Meaning
Present form is usually the truthful form
Curvature, bowing, articulation, compression and incomplete opening can be part of the object's current condition. Measurements should describe that condition rather than forcing the object into an imagined original geometry.
Collector risk
Precision can become destructive
The pursuit of an exact number can produce abrasion, crushing, joint failure, edge tears, contamination or impact. A qualified approximation is more defensible than a precise measurement obtained by unsafe manipulation.
Why measurement photography creates extra risk
Ordinary photography may require only one careful placement. Measurement photography adds rulers, calipers, repeated orientations, close equipment and decisions about what counts as an edge, height, depth or thickness. Every additional interaction creates another opportunity for abrasion, impact, deformation, contamination, component loss or documentation error.
Risk is often cumulative rather than dramatic. One cautious turn may produce no visible change, while ten unnecessary repositionings can abrade corners, loosen joints, worsen a tear, shed friable material or separate an accessory from its correct object. Safe practice therefore reduces the number of handling cycles as well as the severity of each movement.

Begin with a handling assessment
Assess the collectible before moving it from storage or its current resting place. The first decision is not which tool to use. It is whether the object should be moved or directly measured at all.

When movement produces flexing, sound, shedding, resistance or visible change, the issue has crossed into preservation, hazardous-material management or specialist handling. Photography should pause until the object can be supported and assessed appropriately.
Prepare the station before the object arrives
Complete the photographic and measuring setup before retrieving the collectible. The object should never wait on an exposed table while the collector searches for a ruler, changes a lens, clears a cable or opens a storage box.

Clean hands or gloves?
There is no universal rule that gloves are always safer. The correct choice depends on material, surface, contamination risk and the amount of grip and tactile feedback needed.
Clean, dry bare hands
Often suitable for stable paper, robust books, some textiles and situations where gloves materially reduce grip. Hands must be freshly washed, fully dry and free from creams or cosmetics.
Nitrile gloves
Commonly appropriate for metals, coins, polished surfaces, photographic media, vulnerable coated glass, archaeological material and dirty or potentially hazardous objects.
Cotton gloves
Can reduce grip, catch on splinters and lifting surfaces, shed lint and encourage harder gripping. They are a limited tool, not the automatic preservation choice.
Contamination loop
Gloves become contaminated when they touch cameras, phones, door handles, dirty rulers, packaging or corrosion products. Change them before returning to a vulnerable surface. Replace gloves that are dirty, damp, torn or coated with dust or residue.
Inspect and control the measuring tools
A ruler is not harmless merely because it is small. Hard scales and calipers can scratch polished surfaces, chip paint, indent paper, catch loose fibres, press vulnerable corners, transfer rust or ink and fall across the object.

Control the scale, not the object
The safest arrangement is usually the object resting naturally, the scale next to it, the scale immobilised on the background and the camera aligned perpendicular to both. Tape may secure the far end of a scale to the background outside the object area; a recessed channel, separate stand or distant weight may also work. The scale must not roll, recoil, swing, slide beneath the item or conceal a fragile edge.
Support the object, not merely the measurement
Move the support whenever possible. Rotate a coin in its tray, a document on its board, a boxed collectible on its padded platform and a fragile textile on its full support sheet. This reduces repeated gripping and keeps the object's weakest component supported.
Rigid objects
Support from the base and close to the centre of gravity. Do not use handles, rims, mounts or projections as lifting points.
Flexible objects
Support as much area as possible. Avoid overhang, unsupported corners and movement that concentrates stress along one fold or seam.
Composite objects
Handle according to the weakest part, not the strongest. A sound frame, box or body can conceal brittle glazing, loose inserts, heavy contents or glued accessories.

Safe methods by dimension
Width and length
Keep the object fully supported and align the scale beside the outermost extent. Do not slide the object against the ruler or lay a heavy scale across vulnerable media.
Height
Leave a stable free-standing object on its base and secure a vertical scale to a separate stand. For unstable objects, use a padded horizontal support and describe the result as overall length rather than standing height.
Depth
Use a second view and rotate the support board or turntable. Keep the scale parallel to the depth axis and avoid reaching over the object.
Diameter
Place the ruler beside the object in the same plane rather than across a decorated or polished surface. Calipers may be suitable for stable coins or tokens, but the jaws should merely touch and never clamp.
Thickness
Treat thickness as a pressure-sensitive dimension. State whether it is natural, compressed, maximum, minimum or measured at a particular edge. For fragile stacks, textiles, foam, leather and soft plastics, prefer a scale beside the edge.
Circumference
Do not tighten a metal tape around the object. A soft clean tape is acceptable only when it cannot snag, constrict, mark or disturb the surface. Fragile and high-value objects may require image-based measurement or a specialist method.

Choose the least invasive level that can produce a useful record. The hierarchy is not a progression that every object should climb; it is a decision framework for stopping at the safest adequate method.

The object is unstable, hazardous, too large to move safely or already well positioned for a useful record.
Photograph where found.
Place a scale nearby only if this can be done without contact or disturbance.

Specialist handling
The object is unusually valuable, structurally unstable, hazardous, culturally sensitive, insured under restrictions or dependent on unfamiliar materials and construction.
Use a conservator, registrar, mount-maker or professional art handler as appropriate.
Agree the movement and measurement plan before the object is touched.
Use lifting equipment, custom supports or calibrated imaging where warranted.
Treat the inability to measure safely as a valid result, not a failure.

Handling rules must follow the material, construction and condition of the actual collectible. The same measuring tool that is harmless beside a robust modern box may be dangerous around a powdering metal surface, lifting photograph or brittle vintage plastic.

Prevent dissociation and measurement mix-ups
Safety includes documentation control. Sessions involving several similar objects can swap lids, inserts, accessories or measurements even when no physical damage occurs. Work with one item at a time where possible and keep every detached element within a defined, labelled area.
