A maker’s mark or signature is not merely writing to be transcribed. It is a physical event within a material: cut, pressed, moulded, painted, fired, stamped, scratched, cast, branded, transferred or added to a surface at a particular stage in the life of an object. Good photography must record both what the mark appears to say and how it physically exists.
The material relationship may be more important than legibility. A clear name under flat light offers weak evidence when the image does not show whether it lies beneath a glaze, cuts through old patina, bridges a crack, sits on later varnish or was moulded into the object during manufacture. Marks can support identification, dating, provenance and authentication, but photography turns them into useful evidence only when identity, structure, sequence and context are documented together.

Diagnostic framework
Marks are material structures, not merely symbols
Different marking processes leave different physical traces. The purpose of close photography is to make those traces reviewable rather than to force every mark into the appearance of dark writing on a light surface.
Incised or engraved
Material is cut or displaced by a pointed, edged or rotating tool.

Collector scenario: the legible but weak photograph
A seller supplies a sharp close-up of a name engraved into a silver-coloured base. The letters are easy to read, but the crop excludes the object, the base edge, the plating and all surrounding wear. Nothing in the image shows whether the grooves were cut before or after plating, whether metal was displaced at the edges, or whether polishing compound has collected inside the letters.
The correct response is not to enlarge the same crop. Request an object-level view, a contextual base view, a perpendicular record, opposing raking-light images and a controlled reflection across the grooves. The evidential problem is missing relationships, not missing pixels.

Boundary callout: glare can be evidence
Cross-polarisation may make a glossy mark readable, but suppression of glare also removes information about varnish, polish, decal film, adhesive and coating boundaries. Keep both a glare-controlled image for legibility and a deliberate specular or non-polarised image for surface character.
The same principle applies throughout this chapter: an image optimised for reading is not automatically the image best suited to material examination.

Photography is a non-destructive examination tool, not an automatic attribution machine. It can identify questions for microscopy, spectroscopy, radiography, elemental analysis, handwriting comparison, archival research or conservation assessment.
Record observations in neutral language: “the incision cuts through the plating” is stronger than “the signature is fake.” The first statement is visible evidence; the second is a conclusion requiring wider support.
