Material & Surface Clues

A maker’s mark or signature is not merely writing to be transcribed. It is a physical event within a material: cut, pressed, moulded, painted, fired, stamped, scratched, cast, branded, transferred or added to a surface at a particular stage in the life of an object. Good photography must record both what the mark appears to say and how it physically exists.

The material relationship may be more important than legibility. A clear name under flat light offers weak evidence when the image does not show whether it lies beneath a glaze, cuts through old patina, bridges a crack, sits on later varnish or was moulded into the object during manufacture. Marks can support identification, dating, provenance and authentication, but photography turns them into useful evidence only when identity, structure, sequence and context are documented together.

The four-part evidence model

A reliable record should allow another collector, conservator or specialist to answer four different questions. A photograph that answers only one remains incomplete.

Identity

What does the mark say or depict?

Record letterforms, symbols, spacing, proportions, stroke order and any uncertainty in the reading.

Structure

How was it physically made?

Show whether the mark was cut, compressed, cast, printed, written, fired, branded, etched or transferred.

Sequence

Where does it sit among the layers?

Establish its relationship with glaze, plating, varnish, patina, wear, corrosion, damage and restoration.

Context

Does it make sense on this object?

Preserve location, orientation, construction, accessibility and manufacturing logic rather than treating the close-up as detached evidence.

Diagnostic framework

Marks are material structures, not merely symbols

Different marking processes leave different physical traces. The purpose of close photography is to make those traces reviewable rather than to force every mark into the appearance of dark writing on a light surface.

Incised or engraved

Material is cut or displaced by a pointed, edged or rotating tool.

Look for

  • V-shaped or rounded grooves
  • Burrs, displaced edges, chatter and tool entry or exit points
  • Variable depth caused by pressure, angle or resistance
  • Cuts passing through coating, plating, patina or finish

Photographic need: Use opposing low-angle light to describe groove geometry rather than relying on dark-filled lines alone.

Collector risk: A scratch, engraving and ink-filled imitation may look alike under flat frontal light.

Stamped or punched

A die compresses and displaces the substrate instead of cutting it away.

Look for

  • Depressed characters and raised rims
  • Uneven depth, tilted strikes or double impressions
  • Local flattening or distortion of surrounding texture
  • Repeated defects shared by the same punch

Photographic need: Show both the characters and the deformation surrounding them; raking light from more than one direction is essential.

Collector risk: A readable stamp can still be later, misplaced or inconsistent with the manufacturing jig used for the object.

Cast or moulded

The mark is formed as part of the mould, master or casting process.

Look for

  • Rounded edges sharing the surrounding surface texture
  • Casting pits inside letters
  • Mould seams passing through or beside the mark
  • Softened detail or repeated damage inherited from the master

Photographic need: Include enough surrounding material to show that the lettering belongs to the moulded structure.

Collector risk: A copied mould can reproduce the wording and even the defects of an original mark while altering sharpness, texture or seam position.

Painted or written

Pigment, ink, pencil, enamel or another medium is deposited on or absorbed into the surface.

Look for

  • Stroke taper, pools, overlaps and pen lift-off
  • Skipping over texture or feathering into fibres
  • Pigment accumulation at turns
  • Gloss and cracking relationships with substrate, varnish or coating

Photographic need: Record both handwriting form and the behaviour of the marking medium at macro scale.

Collector risk: A convincing hand can still sit on a later varnish, bridge old damage or be mechanically transferred.

Printed or transferred

A design is reproduced by decal, lithography, screen, pad, rubber stamp or transfer process.

Look for

  • Regular dot or screen patterns
  • Mechanically consistent line widths
  • Decal edges, bubbles, silvering or registration errors
  • Broken transfer across rough or curved surfaces

Photographic need: Combine perpendicular detail with controlled specular light to reveal film edges and surface sit.

Collector risk: A facsimile signature may be an entirely genuine production feature without being a hand signature.

Branded, burned or heat-applied

Heat darkens, carbonises, compresses or melts wood, leather or polymer.

Look for

  • Darkening beyond the depression
  • Compressed fibres, charring or heat-polished edges
  • Variable depth on uneven surfaces
  • Melting or local gloss change in plastics

Photographic need: Use side light to separate depression, heat halo and fibre or polymer change.

Collector risk: Dark colour alone does not distinguish a true heat mark from ink, stain or later artificial ageing.

Etched or chemically produced

The surface is removed or altered chemically rather than mechanically displaced.

Look for

  • Matt or granular recesses
  • Diffuse, undercut or softly bounded edges
  • Masking lines or residues
  • Little mechanical disturbance around the mark

Photographic need: Use oblique and specular views to show texture and edge character that disappear under diffuse frontal light.

Collector risk: Acid etching, sandblasting and mechanical abrasion can all produce pale marks but leave different surface structures.

Collector scenario: the legible but weak photograph

A seller supplies a sharp close-up of a name engraved into a silver-coloured base. The letters are easy to read, but the crop excludes the object, the base edge, the plating and all surrounding wear. Nothing in the image shows whether the grooves were cut before or after plating, whether metal was displaced at the edges, or whether polishing compound has collected inside the letters.

The correct response is not to enlarge the same crop. Request an object-level view, a contextual base view, a perpendicular record, opposing raking-light images and a controlled reflection across the grooves. The evidential problem is missing relationships, not missing pixels.

One clear close-up is rarely sufficient. Build a sequence that moves from object identity to surface interpretation, keeping each image tied to a specific purpose.

Examination by light

Lighting is not decoration: each arrangement answers a different question

There is no universally correct light for makers’ marks. A documentary set should include the lighting needed to test the material question, with limitations recorded rather than hidden.

Boundary callout: glare can be evidence

Cross-polarisation may make a glossy mark readable, but suppression of glare also removes information about varnish, polish, decal film, adhesive and coating boundaries. Keep both a glare-controlled image for legibility and a deliberate specular or non-polarised image for surface character.

The same principle applies throughout this chapter: an image optimised for reading is not automatically the image best suited to material examination.

Material diagnostics

What to record on different substrates

The wording of a mark may stay the same while its physical meaning changes completely between metal, ceramic, paper, wood, glass, textile and polymer. Use the material to determine the clues and the lighting sequence.

Metal

Hallmarks, foundry marks, serial numbers, workshop punches, cast marks and engravings.

Surface evidence

  • Patina, corrosion or polish inside recesses
  • Burrs, compressed metal and rotary-tool striations
  • Plating exposed by a cut
  • Casting texture within moulded letters
  • Repairs, solder and assembled joints near the mark

Photographic approach

  • Diffuse frontal record

Caution: Bright cuts are not automatically recent: cleaning, protected recesses and different exposure histories can alter patination.

Ceramic, porcelain and pottery

Impressed, incised, moulded, underglaze, overglaze, transfer-printed and decal marks.

Caution: Crazing through a mark is not automatic proof of age; determine whether the crack passes through the marking layer or whether colour merely settled into an older crack.

Glass and crystal

Acid-etched, wheel-engraved, scratched, sandblasted, moulded, enamelled, gilt and labelled marks.

  • Granular etching texture
  • Wheel-cut grooves or irregular hand scratching

Caution: Transparent and reflective surfaces can create false edges; do not let a digitally inverted or heavily processed derivative replace the original capture.

Wood

Caution: A later inscription may cut through an old finish, but refinishing can reverse or obscure that expected relationship.

Paper, books, prints and ephemera

Pencil and ink signatures, blind stamps, embossing, plate marks, collector stamps, watermarks and labels.

  • Ink loss on folds or offset to an opposing page

Caution: Photography can describe how a signature was applied but may not distinguish author, assistant, stamp, mechanical signature or later attribution without comparison and provenance.

Paintings and painted objects

Wet-in-wet, dry-layer, over-varnish, strengthened, restored, concealed or later-added signatures.

Caution: Do not dismantle, unpick or strain a textile to expose an inaccessible mark.

Plastics, rubber and modern polymers

Sequence evidence

Read intersections before interpreting age

One of the strongest uses of close photography is determining which physical feature came first. At every intersection, ask what interrupts what, which layer lies above, where material collects and whether the apparent overlap is real or merely a shadow.

Six questions at every boundary

  3. Does material collect against an edge?
  4. Does cracking continue without interruption?
  5. Does gloss change at the boundary?
  6. Does the reading survive a second light direction?

Condition axes

Surface age and mark age are related—but not identical

Photography can record whether a mark and its surrounding surface appear compatible. It cannot convert one apparently consistent feature into proof. Use each axis to describe alignment, warning signs and plausible exceptions.

Wear compatibility

Potentially consistent

Edge softening and high-point wear agree with the surrounding surface.

Warning relationship

A sharply defined mark sits within a broadly worn or polished area.

Necessary caution

A protected recess, later uncovering or selective cleaning may preserve unusual sharpness.

Patina and corrosion

Deposits extend coherently across recesses, edges and adjacent surface.

Bright substrate, abrupt transitions or packed residue appear only inside the mark.

The mark should make sense within the object’s production sequence, tooling, assembly and access. Photograph enough construction to test that logic.

Changed surfaces

Use, cleaning and restoration can rewrite the visible mark

The present appearance of a mark may reflect decades of cleaning, polishing, coating, corrosion and repair. Photograph those changes as part of the evidence rather than treating them as visual noise.

Cleaning

May remove deposits from recesses, leave residues, brighten cut metal, thin paint, reduce contrast or create scratches that resemble strokes.

Abrasion and polishing

May soften hallmarks, flatten engraving, erase mould texture, widen grooves, remove plating and leave directional scratches.

Corrosion

May obscure letters, expand inside recesses, fracture edges, imitate raised forms or preserve protected detail.

Varnish and later coatings

May fill shallow cuts, alter gloss, yellow, fluoresce differently or give a later mark and surface a shared aged appearance.

Restoration

May remove letters, reconstruct missing sections, transfer original fragments, add attribution or conceal evidence beneath fill and overpaint.

Collector action

Photograph before intervention. Do not mechanically clean a mark merely to make it readable; material covering it may itself be evidence.

Do not clean for the photograph

Cleaning can remove chronology, redistribute residue, alter edge sharpness and cause irreversible damage. If the mark cannot be documented without intervention, the task has crossed from routine photography into conservation judgement.

Image integrity

Processing choices can manufacture apparent evidence

A technically impressive image may be evidentially unreliable. Preserve originals, separate derivatives and disclose every process that can alter edges, texture, proportion or colour.

Excessive contrast

Risk: Closes gaps and turns weak or unrelated traces into apparently continuous strokes.

Safeguard: Retain a neutral master and label any interpretive tonal derivative.

Over-sharpening

Risk: Creates light and dark halos that can mimic groove edges, raised rims or double lines.

Safeguard: Judge surface structure from the original or minimally processed file.

Aggressive noise reduction

Risk: Erases scratches, paper fibres, corrosion granularity and pigment particles.

Safeguard: Apply sparingly and never discard the unprocessed record.

Focus stacking

Risk: May create halos, doubled boundaries and missing edges where frames merge.

Safeguard: Retain at least one unstacked photograph and document the stack.

Perspective correction

Risk: Can alter letter and symbol proportions while making the mark easier to read.

Safeguard: Keep the uncorrected capture beside the corrected derivative.

Black-and-white conversion

Risk: Removes colour evidence relevant to oxidation, retouching, staining and ink behaviour.

Safeguard: Use monochrome only as an additional interpretation.

Background removal

Risk: Automated masks may trim faint marks, label edges or thin object boundaries.

Safeguard: Do not use a cut-out as the primary evidential file.

AI enhancement

Risk: May invent strokes, close gaps or regularise ambiguous letterforms.

Safeguard: Never treat generative reconstruction as evidence or allow it to replace the original.

Focus and depth

Keep the sensor parallel to flat marks. For curved surfaces, choose the evidential plane deliberately, use stable support and retain individual frames when focus stacking is needed.

Resolution

Capture enough detail to inspect stroke edges, fibres, particles, cracking and intersections—but remember that resolution cannot recover evidence the lighting never revealed.

Colour

Avoid mixed light and automatic filters. Use a neutral reference where repeatable colour matters, while recognising that ordinary photography is not a substitute for controlled colour measurement.

Evidence hierarchy

Judge the photographic record before judging the mark

The strength of an attribution should not exceed the strength of the record supporting it. Classify the available imagery before drawing conclusions.

Documentation

Record the capture so it can be reviewed later

Condition and mark photographs become more valuable when they can be compared over time. Metadata should identify the object, the surface, the setup and every derivative.

Myth versus reality

Common conclusions that photography does not justify

Marks invite confident stories. Replace single-feature claims with layered observations that remain open to comparison and specialist review.

Myth

The signature matches, so the object is genuine.

Reality

A signature can be copied, transferred, stamped, printed or added to an unrelated object. Its material relationship and manufacturing context must also be credible.

Myth

Dirt inside the mark proves age.

Reality

Dirt can be introduced, redistributed or left selectively by cleaning. Its relationship with corrosion, coating and wear matters more than its mere presence.

Myth

A mark beneath varnish must be original.

Reality

The mark and varnish may both be later. The sequence and age of every relevant layer must be considered.

Myth

Ultraviolet photography proves whether a signature is genuine.

Reality

UV may reveal fluorescence differences, retouching and coatings, but it does not identify the signer or establish authorisation.

Myth

A sharper photograph is always better.

Reality

Artificial crispness may alter edge appearance. Context, lighting diversity and transparent processing are more important.

Myth

The mark must be cleaned before it can be identified.

Reality

Cleaning can remove evidence, alter contrast and damage the object. Photograph first and seek conservation advice when necessary.

Myth

Identical marks confirm identical manufacture.

Reality

Shared defects may indicate the same punch, mould, plate or digital source, but that source may itself have been copied.

Specialist threshold

Know when routine photography is no longer enough

Photography can reveal physical inconsistency, layer sequence, tooling, copied defects and altered surfaces. It usually cannot identify who made a mark, establish an exact date or determine chemical composition by itself.

Seek specialist help where:

  • The object is valuable or attribution depends heavily on the mark.
  • The surface is unstable, flaking, corroded or otherwise vulnerable.
  • Cleaning or dismantling appears necessary to obtain the image.
  • A concealed, reinforced or conflicting signature is suspected.
  • Layer relationships remain contradictory after multiple lighting views.
  • Specialist-light imaging may affect sale, insurance or authentication.
  • Material identification requires microscopy or instrumental analysis.
  • The conclusion would be used as formal expert or legal evidence.

Boundary with authentication and conservation science

Photography is a non-destructive examination tool, not an automatic attribution machine. It can identify questions for microscopy, spectroscopy, radiography, elemental analysis, handwriting comparison, archival research or conservation assessment.
