Labels, Tags & Stickers

Labels, tags and stickers are among the smallest details on a collectible, yet they can carry some of its most concentrated evidence. A few square centimetres of paper, foil, cloth or plastic may identify the maker, distributor, territory, edition, price, production period, ownership history or original completeness of an object.

Good detail photography must therefore preserve more than readable wording. It should show what the component is made from, how it was produced, where it sits, how it is attached, how it has aged and what relationship it has to the object beneath or beside it. The aim is to let a later viewer examine the evidence without handling the collectible and without having to trust the photographer’s conclusion.

Central collector principle

Do not photograph a label merely as text. Photograph it as a physical component in a documented relationship with the collectible.

Three layers of evidence

A dependable record preserves three overlapping layers. Losing any one of them can reduce the value of the photograph for authentication, condition assessment, comparison or later sale.

What it says

Informational evidence

The readable or decodable content may identify an edition, maker, distributor, territory, date, price, model, stock number or ownership history.

What it is

Material evidence

A label is also a physical object. Its substrate, print method, cut shape, finish, fastening and ageing may distinguish an original component from a later replacement.

  • Die-cut shape, perforation and corner profile
  • Embossing, debossing, foil blocking or print texture

How it belongs

Relational evidence

Placement and attachment show how the component relates to the object, packaging, construction and surrounding wear. This evidence is easily lost in an isolated close-up.

  • Exact position and orientation
  • Relationship to seams, openings and printed graphics
  • Whether it wraps around an edge or bridges a closure
  • Whether it covers an earlier label, barcode or price
  • Attachment route, knot, hole and fastener condition
  • Whether it is loose, detached, replaced or reattached

Labels, tags and stickers are not interchangeable

Labels

Identifying or descriptive components associated with the object. They may be adhered, sewn, inserted, tied or mounted in a holder.

Examples include manufacturer labels, box-end labels, textile labels, bottle labels, distributor labels and paper labels on ceramics.

Tags

Physically separate pieces attached by string, thread, wire, loops, staples, pins, clips or punched slots.

Because they move independently, record both faces, the attachment route, the fastener and any wear around the attachment point.

Stickers

Adhesive-backed elements attached to an object or its packaging. “Sticker” describes attachment, not evidential status.

A sticker may be factory-original, retailer-applied, historically meaningful, intrusive, damaging, replaced or unrelated.

Myth versus reality

Myth

A readable close-up captures everything important about a label.

Reality

A close-up can preserve wording while losing placement, scale, edges, attachment, overlap and evidence of removal or replacement. Context and magnification must work together.

The essential photographic sequence

A single image is rarely enough. The following sequence progresses from identity and placement to readability, physical structure and measurement. Not every ordinary label requires all six frames, but any detail affecting variant, completeness, authenticity, value or condition usually does.

Object-level locator view

Prove which object and surface the detail belongs to.

  • Show the full object or relevant side.
  • Keep the label visible in its actual position.
  • Record scale, orientation and nearby labels or markings.

Mid-range contextual view

Preserve placement and surrounding construction.

  • Include seams, edges, flaps, mould lines or nearby print.
  • Show whether the detail crosses or obscures another feature.
  • Retain enough context for authenticity comparison.

Straight-on readable view

Create the principal transcription image.

  • Keep the label plane as parallel to the sensor as practical.
  • Include every edge and a small surrounding border.
  • Aim for even focus, neutral lighting and minimal distortion.

Raking-light or oblique view

Reveal structure, alteration and condition.

  • Use low-angle light to show lifting, wrinkling and embossing.
  • Look for adhesive ridges, erased writing and layered stickers.
  • Treat this as a supplement to, not a replacement for, the readable view.

Reverse, underside or attachment view

Record evidence hidden from the front.

  • Photograph the reverse of loose tags and detached labels.
  • Record adhesive coverage, backing remnants and handwriting.
  • For tags, show the knot, wire twist, staple, hole and insertion point.

Scale or measurement frame

Make dimensions comparable when size may distinguish variants.

  • Place the scale adjacent and on the same plane where possible.
  • Do not press the scale onto fragile paper or adhesive.
  • Retain a clean presentation frame without the scale as well.

Geometry, focus and depth

Flat labels

Keep the label plane parallel to the camera sensor. Angling the camera turns rectangles into trapezoids, changes print proportions and places one edge outside the depth of field.

Perspective correction may improve a derivative, but it should not replace a well-aligned capture. Retain the uncorrected master when geometry has been materially altered.

Curved or folded surfaces

Bottles, tins, tubes and labels crossing corners cannot always face the lens at once. Use overlapping centre, left and right views, then record top and bottom edges where relevant.

Photograph each plane separately when a sticker bridges a fold or closure, followed by an oblique image showing how the component crosses the edge.

What must be sharp?

Inspect at 100% magnification. A frame that appears sharp at ordinary screen size may still fail when enlarged for transcription or comparison.

Lighting for reading and for evidence

Soft, even light

Use diffuse light for the principal readable image. It reduces hard shadows, glare, hotspotting and contrast across wrinkled or laminated surfaces.

  • Two diffused lights placed symmetrically
  • A light tent or large soft source
  • Indirect window light without mixed colour temperatures
  • Diffused LED panels positioned to avoid lens blockage

Directional and transmitted light

Raking light reveals creases, cockling, lifting, impressions, layered stickers and adhesive ridges. Backlighting may reveal watermarks, thin areas, tears, pinholes and concealed layers in detached or translucent components.

These views answer different questions from the evenly lit frame. Keep both rather than choosing one “best” photograph.

Avoid direct frontal flash

Flash aligned with the lens can create blown highlights, camera reflections, hard shadows from curled corners and flattened texture. Move and diffuse the light rather than relying on software to reconstruct information hidden by glare.

Reflective, transparent and layered components

Gloss and metallic foil

Keep the label square to the camera and move the lights until reflections leave the text. For foil, take one image for readability, one that proves the metallic character and one oblique view showing stamping or surface texture.

Perfectly flat illumination can make foil appear like ordinary grey print, removing an identifying property from the record.

Holograms and security devices

Photograph at several controlled angles to record colour shift, revealed images, microtext, serial numbers, edge construction and attempted lifting.

A short video may preserve movement that still photographs cannot, but still frames remain necessary for cataloguing and side-by-side comparison.

Transparent and layered stickers

Clear seals may only reveal themselves through edge reflection, trapped dust, bubbles, yellowed adhesive or a change in gloss. Photograph straight-on, obliquely, under raking light and in context with whatever lies beneath.

Do not peel an upper sticker to expose a lower one. Record the stack as found, including size differences, show-through, ageing and the sequence suggested by overlap.

Colour and production characteristics

Colour can distinguish variants, retailer systems, price bands, inspection marks and export territories, but photographic colour depends on lighting, white balance, exposure, gloss, processing and screen calibration. For important distinctions, use consistent neutral light, avoid mixed sources, include a neutral reference in one frame and retain an unedited master.

Record how the label was made

Magnified photographs may reveal letterpress impression, lithographic dots, thermal print, dot-matrix characters, toner, inkjet droplets, rubber stamps, foil blocking, embossing, perforated codes or handwritten additions. These features may help distinguish period production from later replacement.

Use qualified language

Prefer descriptions such as “appears thermally printed”, “visible halftone pattern”, “possible later inkjet reproduction” or “print method not confirmed” unless the evidence is decisive.

Authenticity and replacement diagnostics

Photography cannot establish authenticity by itself. It can, however, preserve the evidence needed to compare placement, ageing, manufacture and attachment with documented examples.

Placement and alignment

Evidence to photograph

  • Position compared with known examples
  • Alignment with print, folds or production guides
  • Unexpected crossing of seams or openings
  • Evidence that the label sits over earlier wear

What it may mean

Consistent placement can support a production relationship; unusual placement may indicate manual application, transfer or later addition.

Collector risk

Placement alone cannot prove originality. Genuine labels may have been moved, and period retailer stickers were often applied inconsistently.

Ageing relationship

Evidence to photograph

  • Wear consistency between label and object
  • Dirt lines, protected areas and fading boundaries
  • Adhesive staining relative to surrounding material
  • A conspicuously clean label on a heavily worn object

What it may mean

Shared wear and exposure can indicate a long-standing association; mismatched ageing may justify closer investigation.

Collector risk

Storage, replacement packaging, cleaning and different materials can age at different rates. Mismatch is an indicator, not a verdict.

Cutting and construction

Evidence to photograph

  • Die-cut or hand-cut edges
  • Rounded or square corners
  • Perforations, punched holes and clipped text
  • Layer thickness and transparent boundaries

What it may mean

Shape and manufacture may distinguish factory production from later trimming, home-made replacement or incorrect reproduction.

Collector risk

Damage, historic trimming and partial loss can imitate poor manufacture. Photograph the entire surviving edge before interpreting it.

Printing and surface

Evidence to photograph

  • Halftone dots, thermal print, toner or inkjet droplets
  • Letterpress impression, embossing or foil blocking
  • Typeface, spacing, colour and ink density
  • Handwritten additions and their sequence over print

What it may mean

Production characteristics may support a period, retailer system or manufacturing technique and expose a technologically implausible replacement.

Collector risk

Do not identify a print process conclusively from an unclear photograph. Use qualified language where evidence is incomplete.

Price stickers, tamper seals and completeness

Price and retailer stickers

Record retailer name, price, currency, stock number, shape, colour, placement, overlaps and whether the sticker covers a printed price, barcode or opening. Do not automatically describe it as factory-applied.

Tamper and closure seals

Photograph both ends, edges, cuts, whitening, fibre breakage, secondary tape and the opening mechanism. An intact-looking seal supports a qualified assessment; it does not prove the package is unopened.

Tags and completeness

Distinguish “tag present and attached”, “attachment appears replaced”, “tag detached but retained”, “association unconfirmed” and “tag absent; residual string remains”. Presence alone is not equivalent to original attachment.

Condition documentation

Labels often deteriorate differently from the object beneath them. Use both even and directional lighting, and photograph before cleaning, lifting, consolidating, removing or reattaching anything.

Preserve uncertainty. Do not use aggressive sharpening or generative reconstruction to turn ambiguous marks into definite characters.

Photographing absence

Missing labels are evidence too. Record the whole former label area, residue boundary, protected colour, torn fibres, scrape marks, adhesive transfer, ghost images and surviving fragments.

Do not photograph only the fragment. Include enough of the object to show where the loss occurred and what shape the missing component may have had.

Detached labels and loose tags

Do not place a detached component back where it “probably” came from and photograph it as though attached. Record the object without it, the component beside the object, both faces, its edge, the likely former attachment area and any residue or matching outline.

Wording matches the product, but original placement is unconfirmed.

Interpretation

May have detached from the underside; this is not established as fact.

Action

Stored separately in a labelled enclosure and linked to the object record.

Handling boundaries

Photography should never place the object at greater risk than the value of the image. Do not peel, flatten, rotate, pull, heat, wet, clean or temporarily glue a component merely to improve access.

  • Press glass or a scale onto fragile paper

  • Transparent supports positioned away from the label
  • Small weights placed outside the component
  • The safest stable orientation available
  • Specialist help where access creates risk

The sticker may be considered unattractive, but it could also document period retail history, territory, pricing or an unopened flap.

  • Full package side with the sticker visible
  • Straight-on readable image
  • Edges under raking light
  • Any overlap with printed price, barcode or flap

Collector judgement

Document before deciding whether the sticker is desirable, intrusive or removable. Photography should preserve the evidence needed for that later decision.

An underside label may be more directly identifying than a painted or impressed mark, yet it is also vulnerable to crushing and abrasion.

Support the ceramic so its weight does not rest on the label. The safest stable orientation takes priority over the most attractive composition.

Keep the original capture, a corrected documentary master and any enhanced presentation derivative as distinct files. Disclose substantial edits, polarisation, focus stacking and specialist imaging so later users know what they are looking at.
