Photographing Wear and Use Marks
Wear and use marks are the physical traces left when a collectible has been handled, carried, opened, read, played with, operated, assembled, displayed or repeatedly stored against another surface. They may be no more than a polished high point or faint loss of gloss, or extensive enough to remove printing, coatings, paint, plating, fibres or surface detail.
Condition photography must do more than prove that a mark exists. It should show where the wear is, what form it takes, how far it extends, whether it reaches the underlying material, whether it appears stable, and whether its pattern is consistent with ordinary use rather than manufacture, ageing, accidental damage, cleaning or alteration. The goal is not drama. It is reconstruction: another collector should be able to understand the object without holding it.

A change caused by contact
Wear is usually a cumulative material change produced by repeated handling, friction, opening, operation, display or contact with another surface. Its geometry often follows how the object was used.
Meaning
Condition and history overlap
A polished grip, rounded corner or rubbed high point can reduce grade while also preserving evidence of handling, circulation, display or mechanical use.
Collector risk
One photograph can mislead
Even frontal light may conceal scuffs and gloss loss. Harsh oblique light may make ordinary texture look catastrophic. A trustworthy record therefore uses complementary views rather than a single dramatic image.
Collector scenario: the apparently clean glossy card
A card looks excellent in a bright, evenly lit front photograph. Under a broad reflected strip, however, the surface shows a web of handling scuffs and a dull thumb-shaped patch. A close macro of the patch alone would make the object look severely damaged; the original front image would conceal material condition. The honest record is the pair: one image for ordinary visual appearance, one for the diagnostic reflection, supported by a regional view showing the affected proportion.
Foundations
Wear is not automatically damage
The words are often used casually, but they describe different condition histories and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Wear
Gradual material change caused by repeated use, contact, movement or friction. Typical examples include rubbed edges, polished grips, softened corners, worn printing, base abrasion, page-turning grime and friction marks around moving parts.
Wear may be superficial, visually significant or historically informative without yet causing a structural failure.
Damage
A more discrete harmful event or failure, such as a tear, puncture, crack, break, major dent, delamination or material loss. Damage can occur suddenly or develop after repeated stress.
The boundary is transitional: a rubbed corner may progress into layer separation, and a repeatedly flexed hinge may move from ordinary use marks to active cracking.
Boundary with grading, authentication and provenance
Photography records physical evidence; it does not by itself assign a grade, authenticate an object or prove who used it. Logical wear can support an interpretation - such as circulation, display or mechanical operation - but artificial ageing exists, replacement parts can carry genuine old wear, and restoration may interrupt an original pattern. Keep observation separate from conclusion.

Build a small set of complementary views
The strongest documentation is usually a sequence that moves from orientation to diagnosis. Each image answers a different question.
Overall orientation
Where is the wear?
Show the complete object in neutral, readable light. Let the object fill the frame without cropping important extremities. This view identifies the object, records broad distribution and prevents later details from becoming contextless.
Regional view
How large and patterned is it?
Move closer but include the whole affected area and nearby unworn material: the complete corner, spine, handle, base or joint rather than one isolated fibre or scratch.
Perpendicular detail
What material has changed?
Photograph approximately square to the surface. This is the clearest view for colour loss, exposed substrate, worn printing, edge whitening, deposits, coating loss and the relative area affected.
Oblique-light detail
What is the surface topography?
Move the light to a low angle across the surface to reveal scuffs, shallow scratches, burnishing, pressure marks, worn texture, raised fibres and low-relief deformation.
Opposite oblique view
Is the feature physically real?
Light the same area from the opposite side. A depression should reverse from dark to bright; a stain, printed shadow, dust or reflection may not behave the same way.
Scale and comparison
How severe is it in context?
Add a metric scale when the object gives no reliable size cue, and pair worn material with a protected or less-used equivalent area whenever original gloss, texture or relief is uncertain.
Diagnostic lighting
Choose light for the condition fact
There is no universal best light for wear. Neutral and diagnostic views should complement one another, not compete.
Diffuse frontal light
Reveals
Colour loss, exposed substrate, worn printing, broad distribution and ordinary visual impact.
Misreading risk
Can flatten shallow scratches, gloss change, burnishing and low-relief abrasion.
Good practice
Use as the neutral disclosure view, not as the only evidence of surface condition.
Raking light
Reveals
Scuffs, shallow scratches, pressure tracks, flattened fibres, worn grain, ridges and shallow deformation.
Misreading risk
A single direction can hide marks aligned with the light or exaggerate innocent surface texture.
Good practice
Photograph subtle wear from at least two opposing directions when interpretation matters.
Controlled reflection
Reveals
Interruptions in gloss on cards, lacquer, coated paper, polished plastics, varnish, metal, glass and glazed ceramics.
Misreading risk
Uncontrolled glare may obscure the feature or create a bright shape unrelated to condition.
Good practice
Use a broad diffused panel or strip reflection so scuffs interrupt a smooth reflective field.
Cross-polarised light
Reveals
True colour, staining, worn ink, exposed substrate and detail beneath reflective coatings.
Misreading risk
May suppress exactly the reflections needed to show gloss loss, polishing and fine scuffing.
Good practice
For reflective objects, pair a glare-reduced view with a separate reflection-revealing view.
Transmitted light
Reveals
Thinning, pinholes, weakened folds, fibre separation and material loss in thin paper, films, wrappers or textiles.
Misreading risk
Can overstate transparency and may expose light-sensitive materials to unnecessary illumination.
Good practice
Use briefly, at low intensity, and only when reduced thickness is a material condition fact.
Myth versus reality: polarisation solves glare
Myth
Removing reflection always gives the most truthful condition photograph.
Reality
Polarisation can reveal colour and printing, but it can hide gloss loss, scuffing and polished wear. Reflective objects often need both a glare-controlled image and a deliberate reflection image.
Geometric honesty
Camera position, focus and magnification
A photograph can understate or overstate wear even when the lighting is correct. Geometry and focus determine whether the viewer can judge extent accurately.
Keep flat objects square
Keep the sensor parallel to cards, pages, wrappers and flat covers unless an angled view is intentional. Accidental perspective can enlarge one corner, taper an edge or suggest curvature that is not present.
Use enough depth of field
Edge wear and curved surfaces occupy several focus planes. A very wide aperture may blur part of the affected area and make it look less extensive. A tripod, low ISO and smaller aperture are usually preferable to aggressive processing.
Focus on the actual surface
Autofocus may lock onto printed artwork, a highlight, dust or the wall of a plastic holder. Magnify live view and confirm that the wear itself - not the enclosure - is sharp.
The magnification rule
Record both severity at the point of wear and extent across the object. A deep 2 mm abrasion and shallow gloss loss across 40% of a cover are different condition facts. A macro image without an overall and regional view can make a tiny defect look catastrophic; an overview alone can make serious local wear disappear.
Pattern before interpretation
What wear geometry may suggest
Photograph the pattern first. Interpret it only after location, direction, repetition and contacting surfaces have been recorded.
Localised wear
Repeated grip, holder contact, packaging rub, projecting high point, fastening mechanism or a single shelf edge.
Symmetrical wear
Balanced handling, matching supports, regular mechanical operation or packaging pressure - but sometimes manufacture or cleaning.
High-point wear
Contact on coin relief, moulded figures, embossed covers, painted models, raised lettering or metal fittings.
Edge and corner wear
Impact, removal from storage, stacking, reduced material support and exposed layered construction.
Directional scratches
Sliding into packaging, wiping, cleaning, shelf movement, repeated assembly or mechanical operation.
Circular or arc wear
Rotating components, lid movement, wheels, knobs, fasteners, turntables or repeated contact around a pivot.
Contact-outline wear
A former label, fitted accessory, stand, mount, protective cover, stacking contact or missing component.
Matching wear
Two parts that repeatedly touch. Photograph the corresponding component and explain how the surfaces meet.
Collector judgement
Distinguish wear from similar-looking conditions
Many errors begin when a visible difference is named too early. Use location, layering, direction, repetition and protected areas to test alternatives.
Wear versus manufacturing variation
Wear usually follows exposed contact points, develops gradually, may expose a lower layer and often matches the object's movement. Manufacturing evidence may repeat across copies, sit beneath an intact coating, follow machine direction or be embedded in the original finish.
Wear versus ageing and deterioration
Ageing often follows material chemistry across broader areas: fading, yellowing, oxidation, shrinkage, crazing, embrittlement or plasticiser loss. Ageing may then make the object unusually vulnerable to later mechanical wear.
Wear versus dirt and deposits
Deposits can darken a surface and imitate worn colour. Cleaning may reveal intact finish, genuine loss, a cleaning tideline or abrasion caused by the cleaning itself. Do not clean merely to improve a photograph.
Wear versus corrosion
Mechanical wear often smooths or polishes; corrosion may roughen and remove metal. Repeated rubbing can nevertheless remove corrosion products and expose a bright contact point, so photograph the transition and surrounding surface.
Wear versus restoration or alteration
Retouching, recoating and polishing may conceal wear. Look for gloss mismatch, brush texture, coating overlap, sharp colour transitions or a wear pattern interrupted by a repaired area. Photography may raise the question without proving the treatment.
Wear versus intentional finish
Distressed paint, antiqued patina, stonewashed metal, rubbed edges and simulated dirt may be original design. Compare protected areas, documented variants, duplicate components and manufacturer references before calling the effect damage.
Material response
Adapt the sequence to the collectible
The documentary logic remains consistent, but vulnerable points, reflective behaviour and likely lookalikes change with the material and object type.

Avoid unsupported conclusions
Phrases such as “definitely authentic wear”, “caused by the original owner”, “naturally aged”, “never cleaned” and “only cosmetic” exceed what most photographs can prove. Record the physical fact, identify the interpretation as an interpretation, and preserve uncertainty where evidence is incomplete.

Do not create more wear while photographing wear
Objects are often most vulnerable while being moved, opened, turned, articulated or removed from storage. Prepare the sequence before the object enters the work area.
Before movement

During capture

Specialist threshold
Stop routine photography and seek conservation advice when positioning requires force, active flakes or fibres are lifting, a hinge or joint may fail, a surface is tacky or powdering, corrosion products are loose, a sealed object would need opening, or cleaning is being considered to reveal the surface. Better documentation never justifies avoidable loss.

Condition change can only be inferred confidently when the photographs are comparable. A new raking-light image cannot be fairly compared with an old soft frontal image.
