Marks, Labels & Signatures

Marks, labels and signatures are among the most visible and most frequently overvalued forms of authentication evidence. A name on a base, a factory stamp, a numbered label or a familiar signature can appear to answer the collector's question immediately. In reality, it introduces a new set of questions: what is the feature, how was it produced, when was it applied, does it belong to this object, and what claim can it legitimately support?

The governing principle is simple: a mark is evidence attached to an object, not automatic proof of what the object is. Good authentication separates the literal mark from the interpretation built around it, then reconciles both with materials, construction, chronology, provenance and controlled comparison.

Collector scenario

The signature that answered too quickly

A desirable name appears exactly where the signature is expected. The handwriting looks old, the placement feels plausible and the seller confidently names the creator. The temptation is to let the object authenticate itself.

A disciplined inspection slows the claim down. Is the mark handwritten or printed? Does the ink lie above or below the finish? Does its movement resemble signatures from the correct period? Was the signed component originally part of this object? Could the name indicate approval, ownership, dedication or branding rather than authorship? The useful question is not merely “Is the signature real?” but “What relationship does this signature have to the object and to the claim being made?”

Orientation

First identify the job the mark is doing

Marks overlap in appearance but not in evidential function. Before deciding whether a feature is genuine, determine what kind of relationship it claims to record.

Maker or manufacturer identification

Evidence

A name, monogram, factory device, foundry mark, publisher imprint or manufacturer logo may identify an individual, workshop, factory, contractor, brand owner or production facility.

What it may mean

It can support a production relationship when its form, period, location and application method agree with the object.

Collector risk

The legal owner of a mark may not have physically made the object. Outsourcing, licensing, successor firms and subcontracting can make a correct mark support a narrower claim than the market assumes.

Official or regulatory status

Evidence

Hallmarks, assay marks, customs stamps, proof marks, inspection marks, safety approvals and military acceptance marks may belong to documented systems.

What it may mean

They can establish fineness, submission, inspection, regulation, acceptance, export or compliance within a particular jurisdiction and date range.

Collector risk

Regulations change. A sponsor's mark may identify the submitting business rather than the craftsperson, and a genuine official mark may sit on an altered or composite object.

Production and factory control

Evidence

Mould numbers, date wheels, batch codes, employee initials, assembly numbers, pattern codes and inspection stamps may record internal production activity.

What it may mean

They can help distinguish factories, runs, tooling states, parts, dates, variants or replacement components.

Collector risk

Internal systems are often incompletely documented. Collector lore can become false certainty when repeated without factory records, period catalogues or controlled comparison.

Retail, distribution and market pathway

Evidence

Retailer, importer, distributor and price labels can identify where or through whom an object was sold.

What it may mean

They may support geographic market, sale period, export destination, retailer-exclusive supply or later commercial history.

Collector risk

Retail evidence is not automatically manufacturing evidence. Old stock may receive a later retailer label without creating a contradiction.

Ownership and provenance

Evidence

Bookplates, library stamps, collector labels, museum numbers, auction notations and handwritten ownership inscriptions may link an object to a person or institution.

What it may mean

When matched to inventories, catalogues, photographs or records, they may strengthen provenance and contextual significance.

Collector risk

An ownership mark proves little without identifying the owner, the numbering system and the object's documented path into and out of the collection.

Repair, restoration and service history

Evidence

Repairer's stamps, binder's tickets, service labels and treatment notes may document later intervention.

What it may mean

They can explain changed appearance, replacement components, rebinding, reframing, cleaning or maintenance.

Collector risk

They are easily mistaken for original maker evidence, and they may reveal that a marked component is not original to the whole.

Core judgement

Authenticate the feature, its attachment and its meaning separately

Is the feature genuine?

Does its material, production method, typography, die, handwriting or code match reliable examples from the relevant period?

Does it belong here?

Is it original to this surface, component and stage of history, or could it have been transferred, replaced, reattached or added during repair or ownership?

What does it prove?

Does it support manufacture, design, sale, inspection, edition, ownership, presentation, repair or only the identity of one marked part?

A genuine mark can support a false conclusion. A genuine maker's plate can be moved, an authentic signed leaf can be rebound, an original box can be paired with another object, and a correct retailer label can be misdescribed as factory evidence. The collector must limit the authority of the mark to the relationship actually demonstrated.

Recognition

Read the production method before reading the name

The way a mark was made often reveals more than its wording. Initial examination should be non-destructive and should distinguish normal production variation from warning signs.

Struck, stamped and impressed marks

A die, punch or stamp compresses or displaces the surface. Genuine examples can vary because of worn tools, curved surfaces, weak blows, multiple strikes, polishing, corrosion or later deformation.

Examine

  • Displaced or compressed material around the impression
  • Depth, edge shape, die defects and alignment
  • Wear and patina inside recessed areas
  • Cracking, plating loss or distortion consistent with the host surface
  • Correct location and dimensions for the claimed maker or system

Do not over-read

  • Fresh exposed metal inside an allegedly old impression
  • Crisp recesses on an otherwise heavily worn surface
  • Wrong spacing, surround, punch combination or placement
  • A genuine punch may have been used later or fraudulently

Cast and moulded marks

Raised or recessed names, logos and model numbers may be formed with the object. The mark should normally be structurally integrated rather than appearing applied afterwards.

Examine

  • Continuous texture, casting grain and finish
  • Mould seams, flow lines and shrinkage matching the surrounding body
  • Wear that continues naturally across marked and unmarked areas
  • Tooling or mould characteristics consistent with known production

Do not over-read

  • A counterfeit cast from an original may preserve convincing defects
  • Old moulds can be reused and marked components can be transplanted
  • A perfect logo may prove copying from a genuine source, not genuine production

Engraved, incised, etched and laser marks

Cut marks may be hand engraved, mechanically ruled, pantograph engraved, rotary cut, chemically etched or laser applied. The technology must be plausible for the date and manufacturer.

Examine

  • Tool entry and exit, burrs, stroke depth and line variation
  • Repetitive geometry, rotational traces or standardised fonts
  • Heat effects, granular edges or minimal displacement in laser work
  • Interaction with plating, varnish, corrosion and later polishing

Do not over-read

  • Regularity alone does not prove modernity
  • Laser application is legitimate in some modern hallmarking and manufacture
  • A later engraved number may be plausible in style but wrong in chronology

Printed marks and facsimile signatures

Printed signatures and labels can be fully legitimate, but they mean something different from personal handwriting. The task is to identify the reproduction process before interpreting authorship.

Examine

  • Halftone dots, lithographic texture or screen-print mesh
  • Raised toner, inkjet droplets, offset edges or plate impression
  • Identical line gaps, crossings and pressure effects across multiple examples
  • Whether the signature is part of the design, edition or publisher's process

Do not over-read

  • A recognisable signature form does not establish personal execution
  • A seller may describe a printed signature as merely 'signed'
  • Exact repetition across examples strongly suggests reproduction or automation

Handwritten and painted signatures

A signature is a physical action, not only a shape. Comparison should examine movement, fluency and context as well as letter formation.

Examine

  • Rhythm, speed, pressure, stroke direction and pen lifts
  • Proportions, spacing, connections and terminal strokes
  • Hesitation, tremor, retouching or blunt starts
  • Interaction between ink or paint and the support
  • Variation across examples from the correct period and signing context

Do not over-read

  • Age, illness, posture, instrument and awkward surfaces can alter genuine writing
  • Formal signatures may differ from hurried autographs or initials
  • A convincing shape copied slowly may lack natural movement

Attached labels, badges and plates

A label is a separate object with its own substrate, printing, adhesive, cutting and attachment history. It must be authenticated independently and then related back to the host object.

Examine

  • Paper, card, cloth, foil, metal, plastic or other substrate
  • Print method, typography, borders, wording and dimensions
  • Paste, gum, glue, resin, tape, stitching, rivets or fasteners
  • Edges, fibre disturbance, adhesive spread, shadows and overlapping finishes

Do not over-read

  • A genuine old label may have been transferred
  • A replacement label can be printed on genuinely old paper
  • Original packaging labels can be married to the wrong object

Physical chronology

Use layers and boundaries to establish when a mark was applied

Apparent age is weaker evidence than physical sequence. A mark's relationship to finishes, cracks, dirt, repairs and abrasion can create a relative chronology even when an exact date is impossible.

Potentially earlier in the sequence

  • A signature beneath an original finish
  • An inscription interrupted by old abrasion
  • Dirt or oxidation accumulated naturally inside recesses
  • A label partly covered by an apparently early finish
  • Wear continuing naturally across the mark and surrounding surface

Potentially later in the sequence

  • Ink running into cracks that had already formed
  • A mark passing uninterrupted across a repaired tear
  • Writing applied over dirt, polish or later varnish
  • Clean substrate beneath newly lifted label edges
  • Freshly cut or exposed material within an old-looking mark

Cleaning, recoating, conservation and reattachment can complicate every example above. Sequence observations are valuable, but they should be integrated with treatment history and material behaviour rather than treated as standalone proof.

Collector workflow

A practical examination sequence

This order protects evidence and reduces the risk of allowing a desirable name to shape the observations made afterwards.

Preserve the initial state

Do not clean, polish, remove labels, lift tape, erase pencil, dismantle the object or improve legibility before recording it. Dirt, finishes, corrosion and overlaps may preserve the sequence of application.

Survey the whole object

Locate every visible and concealed mark, including those on bases, interiors, removable parts, packaging, mounts, frames, bindings and accessories. One prominent logo should not distract from secondary codes or contradictions.

Record without interpretation

Photograph, measure and transcribe exactly. Preserve spelling, punctuation, line breaks, uncertain letters, symbols, orientation and damage. Describe a 'printed trade label' before deciding it is a maker's label.

Identify how it was produced

Determine whether the feature was written, printed, struck, cast, engraved, etched, embossed, transferred, moulded or separately attached. The method must be technically and historically plausible.

Establish the physical sequence

Ask whether the mark lies above or below varnish, dirt, cracking, corrosion, repair, abrasion and other labels. Relative sequence often provides a stronger conclusion than colour or apparent age.

Research the claimed identity

Consult official registers, factory records, archives, museum databases, catalogues, trade directories, patent records, period advertising and documented collections. Prefer sources that show the status and date of the reference example.

Compare like with like

Match maker, period, factory, object type, material, production method, market and mark generation. Several controlled references are more useful than one low-resolution marketplace photograph.

Test the object-mark relationship

Decide whether the mark belongs naturally to this object, only to one component, or to a later stage such as retail, ownership, repair or exhibition.

Reconcile the whole evidence picture

Compare the mark with materials, construction, dimensions, known variants, condition, provenance and production history. Contradictions usually deserve more weight than superficial agreement.

State confidence and limitations

Use calibrated wording such as confirmed, consistent with, probably, possibly, unidentified, inconsistent with, likely later or likely transferred. Do not claim more than the evidence can carry.

Comparison

Compare structure, not general resemblance

Reference examples should match the claimed maker, period, factory, object type, material, production method, market and mark generation.

For struck or impressed marks

  • Letter forms and negative spaces
  • Border or shield shape
  • Spacing, dimensions and alignment
  • Repeated die damage or punch defects
  • Position relative to edges and components

Avoid

Do not reject a mark merely because the strike is weaker, doubled or distorted. Separate tool design from the quality of the individual strike.

For labels

  • Typography, punctuation and line breaks
  • Paper or substrate and print process
  • Dimensions, borders and cutting method
  • Addresses, legal wording and company names
  • Adhesive, fasteners and placement

Avoid

Do not compare only the logo. A copied design may fail in paper, address, adhesive or revision details.

For signatures

  • Movement, rhythm and pressure
  • Letter construction and proportions
  • Pen lifts, starts and terminal strokes
  • Expected variation across the relevant period
  • Signing context, surface and instrument

Avoid

Do not trace outlines against a single internet example. A forgery may match shape closely while failing in execution and context.

For serial numbers and date codes

  • Number format and range
  • Font, application method and location
  • Component codes and internal consistency
  • Fasteners, plates and evidence of replacement
  • Surviving factory or registration records

Avoid

Do not treat a number inside a plausible range as proof. Systems may restart, duplicate, skip, or assign numbers at sale rather than manufacture.

Dating

Use wording and technology to create date boundaries

Marks often provide a not-before or not-after boundary rather than an exact production date. A company name, address, legal suffix, postcode, trademark form, patent number, regulatory symbol, font, print process, material or adhesive may be impossible before a known date. Equally, obsolete labels may remain in use while old stock is consumed.

Interpretive traps

Myth versus reality

Myth

It has the right logo.

Reality

Counterfeits are designed to show the right logo. Authentication depends on how the logo was made, when it was used, where it appears and whether the object agrees.

Myth

The label looks old.

Reality

Old paper and genuine old labels can be transferred. Age appearance must be reconciled with adhesive, attachment, wear and the host surface.

Myth

The signature matches an online example.

Reality

A copied signature may match too closely, and the online reference may itself be poorly documented. Compare a controlled population from the correct period.

Myth

The hallmark proves the maker.

Reality

An official mark may identify fineness, assay office or sponsor. It does not automatically identify the person who physically made every component.

Myth

The serial number is in the correct range.

Reality

Correct numbers can be copied, plates replaced and systems misunderstood. The number must agree with method, location, construction and records.

Myth

All genuine marks should be identical.

Reality

Punch wear, factory changes, printing revisions, hand application and legitimate production variation can alter genuine marks.

Myth

No mark means it is not authentic.

Reality

Some objects were unmarked, temporarily labelled, made for different markets or altered through wear and repair. Absence matters only when a mark was genuinely expected on that exact type.

Myth

A real signature makes the whole object real.

Reality

A genuine signed leaf, mount, photograph, base or component may have been attached to a different object. Authenticate the relationship as well as the signature.

Evidence weighting

Give the mark the weight it has earned

Authentication improves when support is graded rather than described simply as convincing or unconvincing.

Stronger support

  • Confirmed in an authoritative register or factory record
  • Correct production method, dimensions and location
  • Die-level or print-state correspondence with documented examples
  • Natural integration with surface, wear and chronology
  • Independent provenance or early photography supports the mark
  • Multiple internal codes agree with one another and with construction

Moderate support

  • Stylistically and technically plausible
  • Consistent with published references but not independently confirmed
  • Appropriate material and placement with no obvious contradiction
  • Similar to genuine examples but comparison quality is limited

Weak support

  • Seller identification or undocumented family story
  • General resemblance to one online image
  • A label or signature that merely 'looks old'
  • A plausible serial number without records
  • A reported mark that has not been properly photographed

Potentially negative evidence

  • Technology, wording or company identity is too late
  • The mark is in the wrong place or on an incompatible substrate
  • Layer sequence shows application after later repair or damage
  • Supposed handwriting repeats exactly across examples
  • Marks contradict construction, component dates or known production history

Absence and contradiction

Missing marks matter only when they were genuinely expected

The absence of a mark becomes meaningful only after establishing that genuine examples of that exact type were required or consistently marked, that the location survives intact, and that no market, date, grade or regulatory exception applies. Labels fall away, marks wear, export versions differ and transitional production can break a pattern.

Contradiction often outweighs agreement

A sophisticated counterfeit may reproduce the famous logo yet miss a secondary factory code, component date, label adhesive, legal notice or packaging revision. Multiple independent marks that agree strengthen a case; one impossible date, wrong technology or incompatible component may weaken it substantially.

Domain boundaries

Know when the question has moved beyond the mark itself

Marks sit at the junction of authentication, provenance, repair, condition and attribution. Keeping those questions distinct prevents one type of evidence from carrying another domain's conclusion.

Documentation

Record enough for another collector to test the conclusion

A useful record separates observation, interpretation and confidence. It should preserve the evidence even if the attribution changes later.

  • Object title, collection number, claimed maker, variant, dimensions and materials
  • A unique identifier for each mark, label, signature or code
  • Exact location, orientation and relationship to removable parts
  • Literal transcription with uncertain characters clearly marked
  • Type and application method: written, printed, struck, cast, engraved or attached
  • Dimensions, colour, condition, depth where relevant and overlapping layers
  • Full-object, location, close-up, raking-light and scale photographs
  • Attachment edges, label layers, fasteners and any concealed or interrupted areas
  • Reference sources, date consulted and the provenance of comparison images
  • Interpretation, alternative explanations, confidence level and unresolved questions

Photograph the whole object, the side containing the mark, a straight-on close-up, a scale view and—where useful—a raking-light view. Do not silently correct damaged wording. A transcription such as W. HARR[IS?] / LONDON / 18— preserves uncertainty more honestly than a completed name and date.

Specialist threshold

Escalate before intervention or high-consequence judgement

Seek specialist input when

  • The mark or signature creates most of the object's value.
  • A significant person, artist, maker or historic association is claimed.
  • A label may have been transferred, reconstructed or layered over earlier evidence.
  • An official mark appears altered, incomplete or inconsistent with the article.
  • Ink, paint, paper, adhesive or print-process analysis would materially affect the conclusion.
  • Ultraviolet, infrared, microscopy or destructive sampling is being considered.
  • Removing a label, mount, plate, backing or finish could damage evidence or value.
  • The conclusion affects a high-value sale, insurance, legal ownership or reputation.

A four-part collector conclusion

1. Identity of the mark

What is it? For example: a printed retailer label used by Company X.

2. Authenticity of the mark

Is the feature itself consistent with documented examples from the claimed period?

3. Relationship to the object

Was it probably applied to this object at the claimed stage, or could it have been transferred or added later?

4. Meaning for attribution

What does it actually prove: manufacture, sponsorship, retail, ownership, repair, approval or something narrower?

Defensible wording

“The label is physically and typographically consistent with Company X retail labels used between approximately 1925 and 1932. Attachment evidence supports long-term presence, although transfer cannot be excluded. It supports retail sale by Company X; it does not establish manufacture by Company X.”

Essential collector principles

  1. Read the feature literally before interpreting it.
  2. Identify its function: manufacture, regulation, sale, ownership, approval or repair.
  3. Examine how and when it was applied.
  4. Test whether it belongs naturally to the host object and the marked component.
  5. Use period-correct, like-for-like references and expect legitimate variation.
  6. Resolve contradictions before accepting supportive similarities.
  7. Preserve labels, inscriptions and layered marks as historical evidence.
  8. Express conclusions in degrees of confidence and state what remains unproven.
